Anambra to set up committee on flood victims’ resettlement

Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has announced the state government’s plan to set up a committee for the resettlement and rehabilitation of flood victims in the state.

Obi announced this in Awka when a philanthropist, Chief Nnaeto Orazulike, the Chief Executive Officer of Genesis Food, donated two truckloads of the company’s products to the flood victims at Government House on Monday.

He said the committee would help raise the necessary funds to assist the victims rebuild their homes, businesses and make a fresh start.

The governor, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, reiterated the determination of the state government to lessen the burden of the victims and raise their morale to pick up their lives.

Obi urged those wishing to assist the displaced persons with relief materials to go through the appropriate committee to ensure proper documentation and transparency.

The governor expressed gratitude to President Goodluck Jonathan for personally identifying with the displaced persons and also commended other public spirited individuals that had made donations for the welfare of the victims.

Earlier, Orazulike explained that he was encouraged by the bold and prompt steps taken by the state government to provide succour to those affected by the flood.

    Police’s anti-kidnapping squad for Anambra

Anambra State Police is to set up a Special Anti-kidnapping Squad to combat kidnapping and other related crimes.

Commissioner of Police Isa Nasarawa, stated this in Awka yesterday when elders of the Ekwusigo Local Government Area led by the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Information Paulinus Onyeka, visited him.

The commissioner said the proposal to set up the squad had been sent to Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

He also announced that the inspector general of police had established a school for the training of intelligence officers in the police, who would be posted to different locations to monitor and report criminal activities.

Nasarawa said the success recorded in recovering illegal armoury at Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area and Uli in Ihiala Local Government Area were based on information supplied to the police.

He pleaded with Nigerians to always supply information that could lead to arrest of criminals and forestalling of crime in the state.

The commissioner said the police is still receiving information and will continue to arrest and prosecute criminals, adding: “we shall do all it takes to rid the state of criminals.”

He expressed gratitude to the people of Ekwusigo Local Government Area for their decision to support the police in Oraifite and Uli in recovering arms.

Onyeka commended the police for its efforts in fighting crime in the state.

He appealed to the police to introduce an intelligence unit in the force to be posted to markets and other areas to monitor and report crimes.

The lawmaker advised other police commands to emulate the good job done by the Anambra State Police Command.

In the delegation were the President General of the Oraifite Development Union, Sir Raph Nwike, Chief Linus Obumneme, Chief Duru Uchenna, Hon. Leonard Anigbogu, Acting Secretary of the Ozubulu Development Union, who stood in for Chief Norbert Anigbogu.

  • Anambra council cracks down on sand excavators

Anambra council cracks down on sand excavators

The Transition Committee Chairman, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Emeka Aforka has started a revolution in the council.

The council boss has taken steps to end indiscriminate sand excavation in the area, a growing pastime in which notable figures, including traditional rulers and town presidents-general, are fingered.

Henceforth, anyone caught in the act will be arrested and prosecuted, Newsextra learnt.

Already, a man has been arrested and prosecuted over sand excavation, though he has been granted bail.

The council, which consists of 16 communities, has been contending with erosion, a situation that is worsened by sand excavation.

Hon Aforka gave the arrest order after due consultation with his council, which determined that community leaders were colluding with law breakers to aggravate soil erosion in the local government.

In a letter to the District Police Officer in the council, Emeka, through Dr H. N. Ozokwere, also ordered the arrest of beach operators who are believed to be involved in the act.

Part of the letter reads: “I am directed to refer to the management decision during the council meeting of 6th August, 2014 and hereby convey the mandate of the arrest of all beach owners in Orumba North Local Government Area, for the purposes of prosecution in matters relating to indiscriminate sand excavation  in the local government area.

“Please recall that numerous prohibitions have been placed on this issue and that notwithstanding, some obnoxious individuals are recalcitrant because sand excavation is still going on as clearly observed on all beaches.

“All impounded vehicles in the course of enforcing the ban on sand excavation shall be released only on payment of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) in addition to the corresponding demurrage into the council’s bank account’’.

The letter was copied to the State Security Service, among others.

A transporter, Ofodile Emmanuel, has been arrested in connection with the act, while two of his tipper trucks were impounded. He was charged to court and granted bail under stringent conditions.

Before his arrest, Aforka summoned a meeting of presidents-general and traditional leaders with the DPO to interrogate them on matters relating to sand excavation.

Aforka said members of a task force committee on sand excavation were beaten up by certain residents, believed to be involved in the excavation.

He said the war against excavation of sand in Orumba North is yielding positive results, adding that the arrest order will be duly carried out.

Those who “open their beaches at night” will be arrested, he said, “because we can’t tolerate such sabotage. We are ordering their arrest because they connived…”

On Ofodile’s trial, Emeka said “it is a good development because the court granted him bail under stringent conditions…I advise those who violate the laws on sand excavation to have a rethink.”

At the  Umunze Chief Magistrate Court presided over by His Lordship Mike I. Ogolo, the suspect Emmanuel Ofodile was granted bail with N200, 000 with a surety in like sum who is a civil servant, among other conditions.

Addressing the suspect, the magistrate said: “If you love yourself, don’t go there again for excavation because there is a law against excavation sequel to the enormous erosion ravaging the state.”

Ofodile and others at large were said to be excavating sand at Isi Akpu Beach, Awgbu, Orumba-South at night to avoid arrest.

The defendant applied for bail but police prosecutor Jonas Ukwadi objected the application which was granted by His Lordship.

The Orumba North Transition Committee Chairman equally led a team of task force personnel to enforce the removal from the road of over 700 blocks, six tippers of sand and six tippers of stone, said to belong to a builder.

Emeka said the owner of the items, which have been confiscated, was blocking a road in spite of an order not to do so.

He said people flouting the order to removal order for one purpose or the other will have themselves to blame as the order would be enforced.   “Any order given by the governor, Mr Peter Obi, must be complied with by the local government and we will deal with those flouting the order  decisively until they comply. We will arrest and prosecute no matter how highly placed and we will arrest more people.”

  • SOS as Anambra community caves in to erosion

SOS as Anambra community caves in to erosion

RESIDENTS of Uruokpala village in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday sent a Save our Soul (SOS) message to the government over erosion menace threatening to swallow the community.

They said the erosion has swallowed their buildings, submerged roads as well as farmlands after destroying lives and property.

The community raised the alarm that the Girls Secondary School, Abagana could be cut off and swept away by the gully.

A community leader Chief Ezike Okafor, said that the erosion has completely cut some roads linking them with neighboring communities like Nimo, Enugwu-ukwu, Idemmili among others.

He maintained that the collapse of the culvert which has worsened the situation in Uruokpala and Umudunu villages would also affect agricultural production in the areas.

Lamenting the effects of the gully erosion, Okafor warned that erosion could sweep-off Girls Secondary School, Abagana, unless something was urgently done.

Another stakeholder in the community, Elder Pius Chukwumelu, described the gully as a great threat to socio-economic development of the area. He pointed out also that it has affected the implementation of ongoing electrification project in the community and as well reduced the agricultural potential of the town.

Chukwumelu lamented that nothing has been done despite several visitations by government officials. He pleaded for government’s speedy intervention to save the situation.

The gully which the community said has gone beyond their control was so devastating that most preventive measures earlier taken such as culverts and bamboo trees have been washed away.

  • 2014: Battle for Anambra governorship race begins

2014: Battle for Anambra governorship race begins

Almost two years before the end of Governor Peter Obi’s tenure, the race over his successor has begun in earnest, reports Remi Adelowo

The political scene in Anambra State seems quiet on the surface. But that may just be a façade after all if the intense jostling presently going on underground over who takes over the Government House in Awka in 2014 is anything to go by.

The stakes are indeed high. For the incumbent governor, Mr. Peter Obi, nothing short of having his anointed candidate as his successor would be good enough. Some weeks back, the revered Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, had, during a visit to his palace by the governor, reportedly said that Obi deserves to have a major say on who succeeds him in 2014.

But for other stakeholders in the state, both within the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and opposition parties, the traditional ruler may just be playing to the gallery. The governor, they have resolved, must be stopped on his track before he ‘foists’ his anointed candidate as the next governor of the state.

Elected on the platform of APGA, Obi got into office in 2006 in a blaze of glory. For over three years, he was in and out of courts to retrieve his mandate from Dr. Chris Ngige, the then candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was declared winner of the 2003 Anambra governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His tenure was briefly terminated in 2007 when the Maurice Iwu-led INEC organised another election, which produced Dr. Andy Uba, the former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as winner.

Following the intervention of the Supreme Court at the request of Obi, who claimed that his tenure started on the day he was sworn into office, Uba entered the Guinness Book of Records as the first elected governor in Nigeria who lasted in office for only two weeks.

    Obi’s alleged ‘sins’

Sources alleged that soon after Obi became entrenched in office, he fell out with majority of APGA chieftains and ‘foot soldiers’ who assisted him during the election and the struggle to reclaim his mandate in the law courts.

Obi, his critics alleged, refused to appoint APGA members into his cabinet, preferring non-members not known in the party.

This development was reportedly brought to the knowledge of the former leader of APGA, late Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who allegedly prevailed on the governor to redress the situation. But Obi, now elected for a second term in 2014, allegedly reneged on the agreement.

Prior to his second term election, the governor had fallen out with the pioneer National Chairman of APGA, Chief Chekwas Okorie, who had accused him of alleged dictatorial tendencies and failure to fund the party.

The Nation gathered that the treatment meted to Okorie left APGA badly fractured, with many of its members decamping to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The party has not recovered ever since.

That APGA has lost steam in the last five years is evident in the strong showing of the ACN and the PDP both at the 2010 and the 2011 general elections. Presently, out of the three senatorial seats in the state, PDP has two senators-Andy Uba and Mrs. Margery Okadigbo, while ACN has one in the person of Ngige.

    Battle for APGA ticket

With the personality crisis between Obi and the current National Chairman of APGA, Chief Mike Umeh yet unresolved, there are strong indications that the party may face the next governorship election as a divided house, according to sources in the party.

But the question of who wins the party’s governorship ticket for the 2014 election appears to be the major concern today. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Obi is allegedly looking beyond the party to choose a candidate. And if feelers in the state are anything to go by, the Chairman/CEO, Capital Oil and Gas, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, may get the governor’s nod for the ticket.

    Other candidates in contention

Other notable personalities alleged to have serious interest in the race include former Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyuli and a member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife.

Akunyuli, who lost the Anambra Central Senatorial Seat to Chris Ngige in last year’s general elections, is not giving up on her political career, according to a source close to her. The Nation gathered that the former Director-General, National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) now spends more time at her hometown, Agulu, in an attempt to consolidate grassroots support.

However, another source disclosed that it is very unlikely that Akunyuli will contest against Ubah, whom she is quite close to if the latter shows interest in the race. Ubah, according to the source, is a close family friend of the Akunyulis.

Ekwunife, who is serving a second term at the National Assembly, is said to have an outside chance to win the APGA ticket in spite of her close political ties with the governor.

Another candidate, whose name is being mentioned in whispers within the Anambra political circles, is Chief Chuma Nzeribe, who lost the Anambra South Senatorial election to Andy Uba last year.

    Who wins PDP ticket?

Though serving his first term in the Senate, Andy Uba is still said to nurse a burning ambition to rule Anambra State. Alleged to have a deep pocket to prosecute the campaign, Uba, according to insiders, has in the last one year been working behind the scene to actualise his dream. “The bitter experience he had in 2007, when he served as governor for two weeks, has not discouraged him,” said a source close to the former presidential aide.

The major challenge Uba may face, according to sources is likely to be from forces loyal to President Goodluck Jonathan, who is alleged to have frosty relationship with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, widely acknowledged as Uba’s godfather.

But despite the fact that the Anambra State chapter of the PDP is controlled by supporters of Uba, sources revealed that many of the top party members are not rooting for Uba’s candidature.

Some members of this independent group are instead canvassing for the drafting of former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who was the party’s candidate in the 2010 governorship election, into the race.

“The snag in the proposal is that Soludo is allegedly wary of committing his time and resources to another energy-sapping campaign”, said a source who added, “The man (Soludo) was betrayed by many PDP members both at the state and the national level. He wants to be given solid assurances before he throws his hat into the ring again.”

Also set for the PDP governorship battle is Lagos-based businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Obinna Uzor, who contested for the ticket in 2003 and 2007.

    ACN not left out

He personifies the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Anambra State. Across the state, Chris Ngige’s image looms large. His entry into ACN from the PDP has made the party a force to reckon with in Anambra State politics.

In a recent interview, the first-term senator pooh-poohed the agitation of some stakeholders on the need for a power shift to Anambra North senatorial zone, which has not produced a democratically-elected governor of the state since its inception in 1991.

Ngige had stated that since indigenes of the zone had contested for the governorship seat with people from other zones in previous occasions, it is only through a democratic process that the next governor of the state will emerge and not through a zoning formula.

This statement, some analysts contend, is an indication that Ngige may contest the governorship race for the third time.

As the countdown to the 2014 election begins, nothing for now looks certain on who takes over the Anambra Government House from Mr. Peter Obi.

  • ‘Declare Anambra a flood disaster area’

THE Anambra State Elders Council has called on the Federal Government to declare Anambra flood disaster area. The Council made the call after a meeting with Governor Peter Obi at the Governor’s Lodge.

The Chairman of the Council, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, lamented that six out of the 21 local government areas of the state have already been submerged in water.

While commending the sustained efforts of Governor Obi and prompt intervention in the affected areas, Ikedife noted that the devastation has gone beyond the capability of the local and state governments. He appealed for immediate intervention of the federal government and organisations to bring succor to the flood victims. He also observed that most of the industries recently commissioned by the President have all gone under the water.

A former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife also called on the National Emergency Management Agency–NEMA-to establish a visible presence in the state while requesting churches to continue to assist the victims.

The Archbishop of the Niger Province, Most Reverend Christian Efobi, called for prayers and collective efforts of all stakeholders to cushion the effect of the devastation.

Also speaking, the Anglican Bishop of Awka, Right Reverend Alexander Ibezim, regretted that huge resources have already been lost to the menace and people’s suffering have continued to increase.

In his remarks, the traditional ruler of Aguleri, Igwe Christopher Idigo, appealed to people who are still in the flood area to vacate immediately to avoid loss of life.

  • Philanthropist donates to Anambra flood victims

A popular philanthropist, Chief Willie Obiano, has donated relief materials to flood victims in Anambra State.

He called on public-spirited organisations and individuals to come to the rescue of the victims.

Obiano described the flood that ravaged several communities in Anambra as unprecedented while praising the state government for alleviating the suffering of the victims.

He spoke last week while donating relief materials to victims in Aguleri, Umuleri and Anam rehabilitation camps.

Some of the items include food items, sleeping materials and beverages.

He also offered one of his family houses to accommodate 16 homeless families.

    •Senator Uba seeks emergency declaration

Anambra floods remained on the front burner yesterday as Governor Peter Obi offered accommodation to the displaced persons inside the Government Lodge in Onitsha.

Senator Andy Uba was moved to tears when he visited the site of the floods and called on President Goodluck Jonathan to declare emergency in the area.

Dr. Uba, representing Anambra South, visited the affected coastal areas in Anambra East, Anambra West and Ogbaru local government areas.

“The situation in these Anambra communities is worse than those in Kogi, Benue and other states since this flood began its dangerous incursion into Nigeria.”

He urged federal government to address this “strange and evil development in Anambra State, where the River Niger is now discharging water into residential areas, instead of the other way round. The discharge channels are now making upward discharge of water, instead of downward discharge, wreaking unprecedented havoc in its trail. Churches and farmlands have been destroyed”, he said. He promised to facilitate the inclusion of relief for the communities in the next budgetary allocation. Although the affected communities are not within his senatorial constituency, Senator Uba gave financial assistance to them.

Governor Obi yesterday directed the Secretary to the Anambra State Government , Mr Oseloka Obaze, to immediately consider sending some people evacuated from the flooded communities to the Governor’s Lodge in Onitsha should there be shortage of accommodation.

Obi spoke while touring some of the public buildings sheltering the people at Omunwa Egboka primary school, behind the Basillica of the Most Holy Trinity.

The Governor, who cancelled a trip to Mexico and his participation in the Independence anniversary ceremonies because of the emergency, said the State Government would continue to feed and provide for them since they are suffering from natural disaster that was not their own making. “A few weeks ago, governors of the Southeast sent money to Haiti to help them rebuild after the Earthquake of 2010. If we could do it to them, we must do more for our people, that elected us to serve them”, Obi said.

The Governor visited other camps, Otuocha Local Governement Headquarters, Umueri General Hospital, Father Joseph Secondary School, among others.

Aviation minister’s, others’ homes submerged in Anambra

Floods have submerged the homes of a former Anambra State Deputy Governor, Chinedu Emeka; Aviation Minister, Stella Odua and former Transport Minister John Emeka in Anambra State.

Governor Peter Obi yesterday shelved the 52nd Independence anniversary at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital, and relocated to Ogbaru Local Government Area, to evacuate the victims.

Most of the victims are camped at the Army Barracks in Onitsha; those from Anambra East and West are camped in Oyi Local Government Area.

The governor ordered the closure of schools in the affected communities to avoid loss of lives.

The Nation learnt that two persons, a woman and a child, drowned on Sunday in Ogbaru.

This, it was learnt, made Obi to begin the evacuation of the victims.

Officials of the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ministries of Education and Health as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were coordinating the evacuation with their ambulances.

The governor directed the commencement of Nomadic Education in the state. Tents and camps are being erected for those who do not have any place or relations in other areas to go to.

Over 1,200 bags of rice and other relief materials have been sent by the state government to the victims in Oyi and Army barracks to alleviate their suffering.

Other alternative arrangements were on by the FRSC and SEMA to send more operational vehicles to the affected areas .

  • LP NEC ratifies removal of Anambra chair

    •Party disowns Uba

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has ratified the removal of the party’s chairman in Anambra State, Mr. Jude Ezenwafor.

LP National Vice-Chairman, Southeast, Chief Callistus Okafor said Ezenwafor was removed because he failed to clear himself of the allegation of fraud against him.

Okafor told reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, that the party’s NEC has ratified the elevation of the former deputy chairman, Mr. Sam Oraegbunam, as the Acting State Chairman.

He restated that Senator Andy Uba is not an LP member and anybody who does business with him in the party’s name does so at his or her own risk.

Okafor said: “Let me make it clear, Andy Uba is not a member of LP. He only found shelter in the party during the 2010 governorship election and left for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the election. The Chief Dan Nwanyanwu-led LP believes in the constitution and rule of law.

“This party does not believe in godfatherism. That is why we do our things based on the constitution and have no faction as is being speculated.”

Ezenwafor threatened to sue the party for defamation of character, if it fails to apologise to him within two weeks.
