Stakeholders worry over kidnappings, killings, other crimes in Anambra

The insecurity situation in Anambra state was the focal point at a summit held at the BON Smith-City 2024 Business Summit in Awka, the state capital over the weekend as stakeholders expressed deep concerns over the escalating killings, kidnappings and other crimes that have taken over the state in recent time.

Those who spoke at the summit attributed the decline in patronage to their businesses, particularly real estate, to the existing insecurity in the state.

According to them, customers now preferred to invest their resources in other places like Asaba, in Delta State due to the rising kidnappings, cult clashes and general insecurity in the land.

The Summit themed, ‘Business Ethics & Sustainability in the 21st Century,’ is an annual event of BON Hotel Smith City in Awka organised to help support the investment agenda and drive of the state government.

One of the stakeholders, Mr. Jude Obiekwe, CEO of Catchline Group (CG), during his presentation, emphasised the crucial role of entrepreneurship in building a thriving African economy.

To overcome challenges in business, Obiekwe advocated for creating partnership webs.

He noted that Nigerians were individually strong but corporately weak, emphasising the need for collective effort.

Mr. Uchenna Ajator, CEO of Unique Rentals, in his address on “Business and Legitimacy,” emphasised that the core purpose of entrepreneurship extends beyond profit maximisation.

Chairman of the Real Estate Developers Association, Mr. Martins Nwafor, addressed participants on the pivotal role of effectively utilising their potentials

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, encouraged the participants and the public to establish a sound working relationship with security agencies in the state for the sake of security updates and emergencies.

Ikenga who represented the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, urged participants to eschew trouble in their business dealings, noting that there would be nothing like insecurity if all imbibed existing business and professional ethics.

Anambra PDP congress elects new chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected Chidi Chidebe as the new chairman in Anambra State.

He was declared winner of the Congress by Enugu Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, on Thursday morning

The PDP Congress was postponed last week by Ossai, a lawyer, for some unforseen reasons

Chidebe, replaces Chigozie Igwe, an Engineer, who served the PDP as the chairman on acting capacity.

The new Chairman, who was the youth leader of the party, defeated his opponent Mr. Amechi Onowu with 1,080 to 960 votes.

Declaring him winner, the Congress Committee Ossai, charged him to rebuild, restore, and reconcile all aggrieved party members in the state.

“Anambra State is critical to the party, victories can only be celebrated when all members are united under one umbrella, the party has suffered so much in this state where it wask a leader.

Engage with all those who contested in the election with you and that’s the only way to be united in a battle.I promised a peaceful, fair, and transparent congress and it has come to pass

“Last week, when we failed to conduct the congress, I told PDP members in the state that it would be free, fair, and transparent. I am happy that this came to fruition.” the Deputy Governor said

He told the new executive to work harmoniously to secure a win in the 2025 gubernatorial election.

“I know it will be a battle, Anambra was PDP and it’s still PDP. Those there today are caretakers”

Reacting, the new chairman, Chidebe said his opponents did not lose election, rather, they’re the PDP backbone to make Governor Chukwuna Soludo weep in 2025

“This is not a victory for one person; it is a victory for all of us. I assure you that my good brother Amechi and other contestants will work with us to restore our party.

  • Forum backs Umeoji for Anambra gov poll

Forum backs Umeoji for Anambra gov poll

The Anambra Leaders Forum has asked Chukwuma Umeoji to join the Anambra governorship election race next year on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

The Forum noted that Umeoji’s experience, grassroots popularity, and proven leadership make him the ideal flagbearer to unify the people and secure victory against the incumbent, Governor Charles Soludo.

The Convener of the forum, Nwafor Peter at a press conference, said the Anambra Leaders Forum was united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer.

He said the Forum would purchase and bankroll the APC governorship election Nominations and Expression of interest form for Umeoji to show how serious it is.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum strongly supports his candidacy and will work tirelessly to ensure he emerges victorious as the APC flagbearer. We urge all Anambrarians to join us in this critical mission for the future of our state,” Peter said.

He added: “Hon. Umeoji’s extensive experience serving the people at different political levels has cemented his reputation as a leader with strong grassroots ties. His ability to engage effectively with the local communities ensures that he understands the pressing needs of Anambrarians. His political success, including his track record of listening to the masses, makes him the candidate who will address real challenges faced by the people.

“With a distinguished career in the legislature and public service, Umeoji brings vast experience to governance. He is known for his pragmatic approach to policy implementation, which ensures inclusive growth, security, and economic progress. Umeoji’s leadership experience within the National Assembly has positioned him to leverage national resources for state development.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum stands united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer. As a demonstration of our dedication, we will volunteer to purchase the APC governorship nomination form for Umeoji. This gesture is a testament to our belief in his capacity to lead Anambra into a brighter future. His candidacy represents a fresh start for the state, with leaders and citizens alike eager for genuine progress.”

Peter said governor Soludo’s alleged failure means the APC would win the state if the party gave the ticket to Umeoji.

According to him, Umeoji is the right choice to lead Anambra out of stagnation and into a future of growth and prosperity.

He said: “Governor Soludo’s administration has been marked by economic stagnation and an inability to fulfill key promises. Issues ranging from unemployment to deteriorating infrastructure continue to plague the state. Umeoji presents a much-needed alternative—a leader with practical solutions to create jobs, improve local economies, and enhance security across the state.

“Governor Soludo’s unpopularity and failure to deliver on key areas have opened a clear path for Hon. Umeoji to gain wide support across party lines. Umeoji’s political influence extends across constituencies, making him capable of garnering widespread votes and unseating the incumbent with ease. His strong affiliation with the APC at the national level will also position Anambra for federal support and partnerships, creating more opportunities for the state’s development.”

He added: “Anambrarians are yearning for change, and Umeoji offers the leadership that will prioritise their welfare, growth, and security. His candidacy will revitalise hope for better governance, economic progress, and stronger social welfare initiatives. Under his leadership, Anambra will witness transformation in key sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and industrial development.

“Anambra cannot afford another term under a leader disconnected from the needs of the people. Umeoji’s candidacy will galvanize a movement against the status quo, uniting Anambrarians in the pursuit of a prosperous and secure future. The upcoming election represents a critical opportunity to remove Soludo’s failed leadership and elect a leader genuinely committed to the state’s progress.”

  • Ibezi and prospects of an APC government in Anambra

Ibezi and prospects of an APC government in Anambra

    By Orakwue Chikelue

Perhaps, not since its formation in 2013 has the All Progressives Congress (APC) a more significant chance of winning the Anambra governorship election than now. With all its ducks already in a row, the party is set to knock off the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) from its long perch in the state.

Before this time, the APC was not a party of choice in Anambra – the All Progressives Grand Alliance was and had that exclusive dominance. The party loomed so prominent in the state that aspirants competed frantically for its ticket as a guarantee for victory. But the unusual dominance, which is about to end, resulted from two significant reasons.

One was the Ojukwu factor. The other was the emergence of the dutiful but minimalist APGA government at inception. Both reasons kept the APGA government for as long as it has lasted. While the latter appealed to the conscience of the church, the former mined Ikemba’s goodwill to great advantage. But more than that, the APGA government consolidated its hold on the state by contriving a succession plan with a zoning arrangement. Though the zoning arrangement was  APGA’s decision and did not reflect the wishes of Ndi Anambra, it was nonetheless tolerated by the people.

But it has since outlived its usefulness and  no longer resonates with the people. It is  disregarded at will by all the parties, including  APGA that introduced it. At least one of the biggest beneficiaries of zoning, Governor Soludo of APGA, did violate it at some point in time as were other candidates who insist against it. At the height of the zoning arrangement he defied APGA and contested the primary. He refused dissuasion until he was disqualified by the party hierarchy.  He is still waging impious war against those who bruised his huge ego by disqualifying him.

Regardless of the moribund zoning arrangement, the APGA government has since lost its bite and greatly enfeebled by ineptitude, highhandedness, and poor politics. It has unwittingly provided and continues to provide the opposition, especially the newly repositioned APC the plank upon which to wrest power from it in a free and fair contest.

And with the emergence of a new crop of pragmatic and hands-on leadership in the state APC, taking Anambra state will be a walk in the park. The leadership is already working tirelessly to exploit to advantage the lacuna in the Soludo administration and retrieve the ship of the state from apparent wreck.

So far,,the APC has engaged in fruitful engagement with stakeholders, including party members, community leaders, youth groups, and disenchanted APGA faithful. It has also intensified efforts at grassroots campaigns, which seek to connect it with the electorate and allay any fear of change.

Leading the charge to unite the APC and maximise its potential in winning the Anambra governorship election in November 2025 is Hon Ifeanyichukwu Ibezi, who, as a member of the 9th National Assembly, made consequential legislations in furthering national development. Ibezi can be described straightforwardly as a go-getter who is unfazed by opposition. Having contested one of the most challenging elections in the state and won without riding the crest of family/politician connection puts him in the best position to deliver the APC in Anambra. Though his opponent squeaked through in the last election, Ibezi gave President Bola Tinubu the highest number of votes in Anambra state in the previous presidential election. Even when it appeared imprudent to campaign for APC against the Labour Party in Anambra, Ibezi defied the attendant backlash. He has since earned his stripes as a strong, loyal, dedicated party man with much to offer his state and the nation.

Ibezi as the Director General of Sir Paul Chukwuma Primary Election Campaign Council appreciates that APC requires unity  to outvote any other party in the coming Anambra governorship election.  He therefore continues to foster peace and bridge the divides that sundered the party over time and rendered it incapable of winning elections in the state. With a crack team of young but tested political strategists and media managers, the chance of the APC winning the upcoming governorship election in Anambra is  very bright.

Determined to leave no stone unturned, the party has already mapped out plans on how to win. It has started engaging the people through town hall meetings, sensitisation programs, media enlightenment, and explaining the APC’s position on improved infrastructure, security, and economic development. It is also addressing the growing discontent of the people made evident by the overbearing attitude of the Soludo government.

It may not be public knowledge, but restiveness among youths is one of the biggest challenges many states face, including Anambra. Efforts to capture this very important demographic, as well as the women group in a new APC government in Anambra, have been the focus of the Ibezi group. Coupled with this is the effort to counter apparent misconceptions about the party and present it as credible enough to end the cavalier government in the state. Apart from the fact that Anambra has no better claim to good governance because it is an APGA state, voting for an APC candidate does not in any way approximate the election of a mercenary governor. Worst-case scenario, the party will appreciate the mandate given it by ndi Anambra and won’t be consumed with the same entitlement feeling of the APGA government.

There is no gainsaying the fact that as a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra state and the Director-General of Sir Paul Chukwuma campaign, Ibezi, has a lot of work to do to change the fortunes of the party. He has done it before by successfully delivering the highest number of votes to the party during the presidential election. Against overwhelming odds – when it was an anathema to identify with the APC, Ibezi showed grit. He has demonstrated competence, loyalty and dedication. When it mattered most, he stood in the gap for the party and fought to give it a lot of relevance in the state. It will not be out of place if, to encourage greater acceptance of the party in the state, Ibezi is encouraged with enough support and higher responsibilities. After all, it is said that the reward for good work is more work.

The passion with which he has accepted the task of delivering Anambra to APC is infectious, and it does not seem anything will alter that any time soon.

  • Soludo, Anambra and the disillusionment of intellectualism (2)

Soludo, Anambra and the disillusionment of intellectualism (2)

In recent weeks, the conduct of local government elections in Anambra State under the leadership of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has come under intense scrutiny and criticism. What should have been a routine democratic exercise has instead become a focal point of controversy, raising serious questions about the state of grassroots democracy in Anambra.

The Controversial Anambra Local Government Elections Under Governor Soludo’s Administration further justifies my case. While we all know that LG elections in Nigeria are nominally a sham save for the one conducted in 2020 by former Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State which saw members of the opposition party winning Chairmanship positions a far cry from what ia obtained in tye so called LG elections. My take remains that even if other governors are playing dirty muat Soludo follow suit? With what language will he be able to speak out should he find himself at the other side of the corner?

The controversy began with the delayed scheduling of the elections. Soludo, readers had recalled had promiaed to conduct the local government elections in less than 6 months into his administration if he was elected, time reach and our Professor began to sing Shaggy’s ” It wasnt me” hiding under all given shenanigans to maintain the status quo, this is despite the fact that

constitutional requirements for regular local government polls, and Anambra had not held LGA elections since 2014, long before Soludo took office.  However, as that self-imposed deadline passed, criticisms began to mount over the continued use of caretaker committees to run local governments instead of democratically elected officials.

Then came the  epoch making Supreme Court judgement of July 11th 2024 which affirmed the financial autonomy of the 774 local government areas and put  a stop to the nefarious piggybacking of the LG funds.

However, when  the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) finally announced election dates in July 2023, it stood logic, fairness and common sense on its heads when it fixed the date for elections in less than a month whereas the laid down process as stipulated by Section 103(3) of Electoral Act of 2022, which calls for 150 day notice period and also ought to give all parties a level playing field particularly  in areas such as timing for proper conduct of primaries, appeals from such primaries as well as the purchase of forms for such, Soludo and his leprous members of the ANSIEC, headed by one Mts Genevieve Osakwe conducted the elections even worse than Area Boys would. This prompted the boycott of the elections by major political parties like the APC and Labour reducing whatever credibility the elections were primed to have.

The opposition parties were not alone in their vehement criticism of the already flawed polls, civil society groups raised alarms. This rushed timeline, they argued, conferred an unfair advantage to the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party and undermined the ability of opposition parties to effectively campaign and organize.

The election day itself was marred by numerous reported irregularities that cast doubt on the integrity of the entire process. Widespread allegations emerged of voter intimidation, no result sheets, ballot box snatching, and the use of thugs   to suppress turnout in opposition strongholds. There were reports of polling stations opening late or not at all in certain areas, while other locations allegedly saw cases of over-voting and result manipulation.

Perhaps most damning were accusations that the Soludo administration interfered directly in the electoral process to favor APGA candidates. Opposition parties claimed that ANSIEC officials were pressured to declare results favoring the ruling party, even in areas where voting had been disrupted or where opposition candidates appeared to be leading based on initial results.

The lopsided official results, which saw APGA win chairmanship races in all 21 local government areas, only fueled suspicions of widespread rigging. Such a clean sweep for the ruling party defied political realities on the ground and historical voting patterns in the state. It strained credulity that opposition parties such as the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and Young People’s Party, YPP, which had performed strongly in recent national and state elections could be so thoroughly routed at the local level.

Even the conduct of his own party’s  primaries would have left Chairman Mao and Stalin grin with envy, as APGA could have been mistaken as a Communist Party, popular candidates were ordered not to be returned while the unpopular and unscrupulous were returned!

However, Soludo’s dismissive attitude towards the serious allegations leveled against the electoral process has only intensified criticisms of his handling of the situation. Which has cast a shadow over his administration’s commitment to the ideals of intellectualism, fairness and democracy. Soludo has merely demonstrated that the Nigerian academic is no different  from a yahoo-yahoo boy.

Many observers have expressed disappointment that a leader who came into office promising transformative governance has instead presided over an election that represents a step backwards for Anambra’s democracy.

The controversy surrounding the local government elections threatens to undermine Soludo’s broader reform agenda and erode public trust in his administration. It has provided ammunition to his political opponents and disappointed many of his erstwhile supporters who expected better from the professor-turned-politician.

Moreover, the disputed elections raise troubling questions about the health of Nigeria’s democracy at the grassroots level. Local governments are meant to be the tier of government closest to the people, providing essential services and fostering political participation. When LGA elections are compromised, it weakens the entire democratic system and alienates citizens from the political process.

As the legal challenges to the Anambra LGA elections play out, the Soludo administration faces a critical test. How it responds to the controversy will shape perceptions of the governor’s commitment to democratic principles and good governance. A willingness to acknowledge shortcomings in the process and work towards a more transparent and inclusive electoral system could help rebuild trust. Conversely, a stubborn insistence on the legitimacy of the flawed elections risks further erosion of public confidence. This i much doubt.

For the people of Anambra, the consequences of this electoral controversy extend beyond mere politics. Functional and accountable local governments are essential for addressing the everyday concerns of citizens – from maintaining local infrastructure to providing basic social services. The installation of leaders through a tainted electoral process undermines the ability of LGAs to effectively serve their communities.

As Anambra grapples with the fallout from these contentious elections and the disillusionment  of intellectualism, such an episode erodes the confidence of the average Nigerian in the academia, one should then wonder what fate awaits Nigeria if the academia can wobble and fumble as witnessed here, where will our hope then come from?  Soludo’s misadventures in power serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic evolution. It underscores the need for continued vigilance and advocacy to protect the integrity of governance and the credibility of the Nigerian academic or intellectual. A sad tale it really is.
