    Insecurity: JSF raids gunmen’s camp, recovers bombs in Anambra

    The Joint Security Force (JSF) has raided the camp of gunmen who attacked two police stations and killed some policemen in Anambra State.

    In the process, six Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) and walkie-talkies were recovered in Ogbunka, Orumba North Local Government bush.

    A few days ago, the hoodlums, as reported by The Nation, attacked two Police Stations at Awgbu in Orumba North and Neni in Anaocha LGAs, where two policemen were killed and stations burnt.

    The action of the hoodlums forced Police Commissioner Aderemi Adeoye and his JSF team to raid some bushes at the weekend

    In a statement Saturday in Awka, the police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, said, “We had previously destroyed two such camps, one in Ogbunka, Orumba South LGA and the other in Achalla, Awka North LGA.

    “Friday, 29th March 2024, the Joint Security Force raided the forests of Ogbunka in Orumba South LGA and found scattered camps of the insurgents.

    “The cowardly criminals fled in the face of the onslaught.

    “Six Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) already primed for attacks and two walkie-talkies were recovered from the Camps.

    “Also recovered were substantial food and grocery supplies. All the camps were subsequently destroyed to deny the insurgents bases for launching attacks.

    “The raid on the forests in search of insurgents and their camps is still ongoing to eliminate the terrorists; rescuing abducted victims; recovering firearms and stolen vehicles in their possessions.”

    Anambra traders petition Soludo over four-year leadership vacuum

    After four years without leadership in the Odera Market in Awka, Anambra State, the traders have petitioned Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, demanding a Caretaker Committee or fixed democratic election date.      

    The traders expressed dismay with the vacuum in the leadership of the market four years after the tenure of the last Chairman, Emmanuel Nwonwu expired in February 2020.                                 

    The petition from the stakeholders was addressed to the State Commissioner for Trade and Commerce.

    It was entitled: ‘Notification of Decisions…. on Vacuum/non-existent Market Leadership for about Four Years, Usurpation/Impersonation of Chairmanship Office by someone, alleged Diversion of Market Funds and Endorsement of Call for Emergence of Caretaker Committee/Elected Odera Market Executives.’  

    They called on the government to appoint a Caretaker Committee for Odera Market to serve for three months.    

    It was signed by the Grand Patron, and pioneer Market Chairman, Ozo Chinweze Ijomah; ex-Chief Security Officer, Hon. Humphrey Onuorah, and other stakeholders including Chief Ikechukwu Ugwuoke, Comrade Emeka Obi and Hon. Valentine Nweke.

    They contended that the unsafe and insecure atmosphere in the market was attributable to the absence of market leadership.

    The stakeholders, therefore called on the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led administration to urgently address the vacuum and non-existence of market leadership by appointing a Caretaker Committee for Odera Market Awka soonest

     As an alternative, the traders further urged the government to schedule a date for the conduct of democratic elections for the emergence of the Odera Market Executive as soon as feasible.

    “That the non-existence leadership of OSCMTA since February 2nd, 2020 has been capitalized upon by some persons to illegally assume and hijack power to continue to recycle themselves in the leadership positions, using such opportunity to hoodwink unwary traders, government, and members of the public and abuse office, extort money, erect and sell illegal structures in the market through corrupt enrichment and conversion of shop rents into personal use and misappropriate market funds.

    Suspected hoodlums have set ablaze the Neni Police station in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra state.

    Armed assailants also allegedly ignited flames at the Anaocha Local Government Headquarters, chanting hostile songs directed at the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

    A few days earlier, gunmen had attacked the Awgbu police station, resulting in the deaths of two officers, while another narrowly escaped.

    According to sources, the assault on the local government headquarters occurred between 3 am and 4 am today (Thursday).

    The Nation equally gathered that the hoodlums whisked away some police operatives, including female police personnel at the police station.

    The source said the hoodlums alleged that Anaocha Police Station had become another SARS station.

    When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident.

    He stated that though the hoodlums attacked the police station with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), they however, did not take away any arms, and did not whisk away any police personnel.

    He said the hoodlums were successfully repelled by the superior firepower of the police operatives who engaged them and forced them to flee.

    He further said the police operations were still ongoing in the area as of the time he was reacting to the development.

     He promised to communicate further developments on the incident later.

    On the killing of the policemen at Awgbu police station by the gunmen, he refused to react to it, but a senior officer confirmed it to The Nation.

    The source said the command was on the trail of the hoodlums, adding, “They want to scare those ready for the Easter holidays, but we are ready for them.”

    A resident, who preferred anonymity, informed The Nation that gunmen had been conducting operations in several villages unknown to many, suggesting that Anambra was not as secure as some had assumed.

    Anambra to domesticate NSSEC law in May – Speaker

    Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has assured that the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) law would be domesticated in the State in six weeks time.

    The speaker disclosed this at headquarters of Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) Awka, during the Commission’s advocacy and sensitization visit to the State.

    Udeze, represented by Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Emmanuel Okpalaeke said the law would enable the state gain access to facilities being provided by Commission.

    He expressed the State Assembly’s readiness to assist the Commission where necessary, just as he assured teachers in the state of improved welfare.

    Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr Iyela Ajayi said his Commission chose Anambra State as its Southeast zonal headquarters in view of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s revolution in the state’s education sector.

    Ajayi, represented by Head Senior Secondary Education Department, Mr. Mohammed Salihu stressed the need for Anambra to domesticate the NSSEC law in the state to enjoy the benefits in the Commission.

    He enumerated some mandates of the Commission to include prescribing and enforcing the National Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria and develop policy guidelines for the operation of senior secondary education programmes in Nigeria.

    “The Commission is also mandated to advise Federal Government on the funding and development of senior secondary education in Nigeria, support national capacity building for teachers and managers of senior secondary education in Nigeria, among others,” he added.

    Earlier, State Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh commended NSSEC for instituting the Southeast Zonal office in Anambra.

    She described the event as epoch-making in the ever revolving education sector since the emergence of Prof Chukwuma Soludo as the governor of the state.

    On her part, Chairman PPSSC, Awka, Prof Nkechi Ikediugwu underscored the need to nurture and create enabling environment for education in Southeast and Anambra in particular, stressing that no country or state could rise above its education level.

    She thanked the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, her partners in education from NSSEC for their presence in the state not only to make a change, but to rapidly accelerate progress in deciding way forward in the education sector.

    Scores of traders at A. T. D line Building Materials, Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, Anambra state have lost valuable property following the midnight fire that gutted the market, destroying their goods worth millions of naira.

    The fire, according to eyewitnesses, completely razed four shops and affected about eight.

    Narrating their ordeal, one of the victims, Chigozie Akabuogu an Iron and steel dealer, whose shop was affected, said many of them were still counting their losses after the ugly incident.

    He said he lost over N35 million worth of goods, while his sister who deals in accessories, Mrs. Onyinyechi Ezekwu lost goods worth over N25 million to the inferno.

    The visibly devastated trader lamented that the fire also burnt the N1 million cash he left in his shop.

    He said: “I got a call in the middle of the night from some friends that live close to the market that my shop with goods worth over N35 million was on fire.

    “They also told me that not only mine was affected but that of my sister who deals in accessories. Her goods that were destroyed were worth over N25 million.”

    Another trader who deals in Royal Drail and Rolling Doors Dealer, Ikechukwu Benjamin expressed dismay over the incident that consumed his goods, calling on the government to provide fire hydrants in the market.

    Another victim, a saw dust dealer, Godwin Nsofor who attributed the fire outbreak to an electrical fault, lamented that all the woods he sawed for his clients were lost to the inferno.

    Reacting, Secretary Amalgamated Timber Dealers Association, Augustine Ezekwugo, described the incident as unfortunate and unexpected, saying they had never experienced such an incident in the market.

    He regretted the great losses, assuring that a proper investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.

    He called on traders to ensure they switched off all electrical appliances before leaving the market to avoid re-occurrence.

    Some of the witnesses who assisted in putting out the fire, including Francis Uchechukwu and Valentine Chimobi said youths in the area and neighbours assisted in controlling the fire with water and detergent.

    Anambra First lady launches organic garden competition in secondary schools

    Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo has launched the organic garden competition in secondary schools across the state.

    She also distributed seeds of okro, carrot, pepper, tomatoes, watermelon and cucumber to the Healthy Living Teacher Ambassadors to commence the garden process.

    Addressing the teachers weekend in Awka, Soludo said the project was targeted at encouraging children to learn more about food and farming.

    She described organic farming as process involving the use of natural food sources and nutrients for farming practices without fertilizer or other chemicals.

    She further added that the competition would assist teach children importance of food and farming and their impacts on their lives.

    She said, “This competition is part of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo campaign to achieve a culture of health consciousness, drive organic agriculture with emphasis on food safety and sustainable living.

    “It will help our students learn valuable lessons about where their food comes from, the benefits of eating fresh and healthy foods, and how to care for the environment.

    “Vegetable seeds will be distributed to schools and at the end of every term, schools with the three best gardens will be rewarded.

    “Our children at a tender age will start to appreciate agriculture as an essential way of life and the need to be part of building solutions that foster healthy foods in the society.”

    Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike said the schools garden competition would increase student’s knowledge on foods’ nutritional value.

    Earlier, Chairperson, Post Primary Schools Service Commission Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu said secondary schools students would undergo Health Living lecture every Wednesday after break on how to grow into healthy adults.

    Hoodlums burn man, vigilante vehicle in Anambra

    Hoodlums on Thursday set ablaze a middle-aged man in Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra state.

    The deceased was in a vehicle belonging to Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) operatives when he was set on fire by the hoodlums who invaded the AVG office around 7am.

    The incident was also corroborated by a viral video showing the burning vehicle with a voice calling for the state fire service.

    The details of the development were still sketchy while the reason for the attack is yet to be ascertained as of press time.

    Anambra Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the attack but said the full details were not yet at his disposal.

    “Yes, the attack took place but the full details are not available yet, our men are on the scene to bring normalcy to the area. I will call you back please,” he added.

    Kidnap victims regain freedom, abductors flee from police in Anambra

    Four male kidnap victims  have regained their freedom from the den of abductors in Anambra as their captors fled when the police stormed their hideout.

    Police spokesman in Anambra, ASP Toochukwu Ikenga stated in Awka  that the victims had been reunited with their families.

    He added that a local vigilance group collaborated with the police in the operation at Awgbu in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

    Ikenga stated also that in a follow-up operation weekend, members of the vigilance group and the police combed the surrounding bushes and recovered one AK-47 rifle abandoned by the kidnappers.

    They also recovered two magazines loaded with 50 rounds of ammunition.

    Ikenga added that a manhunt had begun to effect the arrest of the fleeing abductors as the Special Anti-kidnapping Unit of the police in the state had taken over the investigation.

    An uncompleted five-story building located at Basden Street, Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra State, reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, with two persons said to have been trapped.

    The Nation gathered that excavators are working at the scene to rescue the trapped persons dead or alive.

    Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Emeka Orji, is on hand, directing how to rescue the trapped people.

    According to a resident of the area who pleaded anonymity, “The building started from the 5th floor to collapse.

    “The building is at the finishing touches and the 5th floor was almost finished when it collapsed and other floors followed.

    “They are up to two workers in the building that are trapped with scores injured and have been rushed to undisclosed hospitals.”

    As at the time of filing this report, efforts were on by both security personnel and sympathizers towards rescuing the trapped people.
