EU deploys 687 observers to monitor Anambra Gov election

The European Union has deployed 687 observers to monitor Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra state.

The organisation reaffirmed commitment to credible, peaceful, and inclusive electoral processes in Nigeria through the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme.

It explained that through the EU-SDGN) programme, it is enabling its civil society partners to deploy election observers, strengthen peacebuilding, advance disability and gender inclusion, counter misinformation, and reinforce public confidence in the democratic process.

Seven of the 16 EU-SDGN implementing partners, including The Kukah Centre, Yiaga Africa, International Press Centre (IPC), Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), Nigeria Women Trust Fund (NWTF), ElectHER, and TAF Africa, are already on ground in Anambra State.

The EU explained that these partners are operating from a Unified Election Observation Hub designed to ensure coherence, message alignment, and shared visibility throughout the poll.

“The key feature of this unified deployment is to obtain a broad view of the election by utilising the diverse skills and experience of the EU-SDGN partners, analyse the findings, and compile them into a comprehensive report that will be made public and available to all stakeholders.

“In total, the programme is deploying 687 observers across Anambra State, working in coordinated clusters that cover election integrity, disability inclusion, gender participation, peacebuilding, media and misinformation tracking, logistics observation, and real-time data reporting,” the EU cohort said.

It added: “This is one of the most extensive civil society-led observer deployments ever recorded for a state election in Nigeria. Each cluster is collecting evidence from a different angle. When those findings are merged, they offer a fuller, verifiable picture of the election that no single organisation could produce alone.

“The observers are distributed across several thematic areas, including election integrity and results verification; disability inclusion with trained observers and stand-alone sign language interpreters; gender participation with observers tracking women-related issues; media and misinformation tracking through journalists and fact-checkers deployed across polling locations; peacebuilding and conflict prevention; and the monitoring of polling logistics and the distribution of sensitive election materials.

“This election is an opportunity to demonstrate that inclusion and credibility are shared democratic standards. Working from a single hub enables us to coordinate evidence, avoid duplication, and deliver a unified assessment of the process.”

Earlier this week, the EU-SDGN programme supported the signing of the Anambra Election Peace Accord involving all candidates and political parties.

“The Peace Accord is not the conclusion, but the beginning of responsibility. Candidates must not only sign for peace, but act peacefully and respect the will of the voters, the EU cohort stated.

According to the cohort, ahead of the governorship election, the EU-SDGN programme also presented a Joint Pre-Election Assessment Report.

The report analysed the political climate, security risks, media environment, and levels of gender and disability inclusion, and offered 66 actionable recommendations to strengthen electoral credibility, voter access, and institutional preparedness.

The EU-SDGN is an EU-funded Nigerian civil society-led programme working to strengthen credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections across the country.

“The Kukah Centre leads on peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue; Yiaga Africa anchors election observation and data-driven civic participation; IPC and CEMESO strengthen media professionalism and safety while advancing media monitoring and counter-misinformation efforts; the NWTF and ElectHER drive women’s political inclusion and leadership, promoting greater representation of young women in elective office; while TAF Africa champions disability rights and inclusive electoral participation for persons with disabilities,” it added.

Anambra: Obi seeks credible election, kicks against vote-buying

Former governor of Anambra, Mr Peter Obi, has urged the INEC, the national electoral umpire, to ensure a credible governorship election in the state on Saturday.

Obi made the call on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen after a visit to the College of Nursing, Adazi Nnukwu, in Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA).

He also visited the University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Iyienu, Ogidi, in Idemili North LGA.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate advised against vote-buying or other acts capable of compromising the outcome of the exercise.

He described the gubernatorial candidates as his friends whom he respects, but noted that his loyalty remained with his party’s candidate, Dr George Moghalu.

“All those involved in the exercise, in one way or another, are my friends. I have respect for all of them.

“But as a member of the Labour Party, I’m supporting my party’s candidate, though not to the extent of vote buying or any other malpractice.

“Let everyone vote according to their conscience. All I want is a free, fair, and credible election,” he said.

Reacting to the issue of state creation, Obi described the plan as unnecessary, stressing that what Nigeria needs is to function effectively as a nation.

“Creation of states is not our problem. We need to make Nigeria work first, not keep creating more states, ministries, and other structures,” he said.

Obi, who donated ₦15 million each to the health institutions, said he had dedicated his life to uplifting humanity.

“I believe life must have a purpose, and mine is to support people and uplift humanity. I go around Nigeria supporting schools because education and health are critical.

“The key measure of development globally is life expectancy and Nigeria’s is just 54, among the lowest in the world.

“We must invest in health and nurses are the human capital for that investment,” he said.

Obi commended the proprietor of the College and Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor.

IGP warns IPOB, ESN against disrupting Anambra election

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has warned non-state actors planning to disrupt Saturday’s Anambra governorship election to stay away, saying any interference will be met with decisive force.

Egbetokun, represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department at the signing of the National Peace Accord in Awka yesterday, cautioned the state vigilante group Ebube Agu, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) against involvement in election activities.

He said election security rests solely with federal security agencies, warning that anyone bearing arms or obstructing lawful voting would face immediate law enforcement action.

“Any attempt by IPOB, ESN, or any other non-state actor to interfere with the election shall invite an immediate, coordinated, and overwhelming response,” the IGP said. “The peace of Anambra State shall not be negotiated.

Egbetokun stated that unauthorised persons performing security duties or brandishing weapons would be treated as armed non-state actors and prosecuted under the Firearms Act, the Criminal Code, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

He said the police have activated a zero-tolerance enforcement protocol to ensure full compliance with the Electoral Act, noting that offences such as ballot snatching, vote buying, and voter intimidation are felonies. Officers, he added, had strict orders to arrest offenders immediately and ensure swift prosecution through the Electoral Offences Desk.

“The responsibility for peace rests heavily on political leaders,” he warned. “The police will hold them accountable for the conduct of their supporters.”

The Chairman of the National Peace Committee, former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by General Martin Luther Agwai, said democracy thrives only where human lives are valued.

  • Anambra tops Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability ranking

Anambra tops Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability ranking

Anambra State has emerged as Nigeria’s most fiscally sustainable state, according to BudgIT’s 2025 State of States report, marking a significant leap from second place in 2024 and underscoring the growing dividends of reform-driven governance under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

The report, which assesses all 36 states across five fiscal performance indices, placed Lagos, Kwara, Abia, and Edo in second to fifth positions respectively.

BudgIT described the ranking as a product of a decade-long assessment framework that measures states’ internal revenue strength, debt sustainability, capital investment priorities, and overall financial independence.

Governor Soludo’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, hailed the ranking as a validation of Anambra’s economic discipline and policy innovation. He noted that the state’s top performance was “neither coincidental nor cosmetic” but the outcome of systematic reforms designed to boost internally generated revenue (IGR), eliminate inefficiencies, and strengthen fiscal transparency.

BudgIT’s evaluation hinged on five indices — ranging from the ability to cover recurrent expenditure through IGR to debt management and capital investment ratios — revealing Anambra’s dominance across key parameters of fiscal sustainability.

“Governor Soludo’s administration has demonstrated that effective governance is not about rhetoric but results. Anambra’s fiscal prudence now fuels real development in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and job creation,” Aburime said.

A former Central Bank Governor and economist, Soludo has leveraged data analytics and evidence-based policies to reposition the state’s finances, building on a legacy of accountability while enhancing efficiency in resource management.

The 2025 State of States report positions Anambra as a model of subnational fiscal governance, showing that sustainable growth is achievable when leadership prioritizes discipline, innovation, and long-term value creation over short-term populism.

As the state heads into another electoral cycle, analysts say the latest BudgIT ranking reinforces Governor Soludo’s credibility as a reformer whose policies continue to deliver measurable impact.

“This milestone is not an endpoint but a call to sustain momentum,” Aburime added. “Anambra’s success proves that with fiscal wisdom and visionary leadership, Nigerian states can thrive on their own terms.”

Anambra Gov poll: We must resist vote buying, says INEC chairman

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan on Tuesday warmed any attempt to induce voters before or during the November 8 governorship election in Anambra election must be resisted and curtailed.

Speaking at the first consultative meeting with members of the Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), he said  political actors must join hands to combat the menace of vote buying as a way of restoring the integrity of the electoral process.

Amupitan said the Commission was working with the relevant law enforcement agencies, especially the anti-graft agencies, to stop vote buyers from contaminating the electoral process, saying “security agents cannot afford to create an environment that allows vote buyers to operate during the Anambra election.

“Together, let us combat vote buying, uphold the values of democracy and work relentlessly for the credibility of our elections. The path ahead may be challenging, but if we stand united, there is nothing we cannot achieve”.

The INEC boss said following a week-long, comprehensive readiness assessment conducted across Anambra State, the Commission is confident in affirming its full preparedness for the polls.

According to him, the commission recently conducted mock accreditation exercise in 12 selected polling units in 6 Local Government Areas of Anambra State, using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to test run its facilities and readiness for the election.

He said: “Although we encountered some network challenges, efforts are being made to ensure a seamless election on 8th November, 2025, and we are ready for large-scale deployment on Election Day”.

He disclosed that the commission plan to deploy 24,000 personnel, adding that elections will be held in 5,718 of the 5,720 polling units in the State, adding that voting will not take place in the remaining two polling units due to the absence of registered voters while results will be collated at 326 ward centres, 21 Local Government Area centres, and finally at the State Collation Centre in Awka.

National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, said the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) remains fully committed to fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the strategic mobilisation of security forces during the electoral period, adding that this commitment is essential to ensuring the highest level of safety and security.

Represented by the Director of Internal Security, Hassan Yahaya Abdullahi, the NSA said robust security measures have been put in place, including enhanced surveillance, the deployment of sufficient security personnel, and improved intelligence gathering to prevent any attempt by disruptive elements or desperate politicians to undermine the electoral process.

He said the office of the NSA was proactively engaging with political party leaders and local stakeholders to send a clear message that violence will not be tolerated in our elections, adding that all participating political parties and their candidates must advocate for peace and encourage their supporters to conduct themselves in a manner that honours the integrity of our electoral system.

The NSA said any form of violence during the elections will be met with a strong, uncompromising response, saying “the Nigeria Police Force, as the lead agency for election security, along with other security agencies, stands prepared and resolute to maintain a secure environment during the Anambra State governorship elections.”

  • Anambra 2025: In Ikukuoma, we will trust

Anambra 2025: In Ikukuoma, we will trust

The Igbo have a timeless proverb: “Onye aghana nwanne ya” – let no one be left behind. Yet, as we stand at the crossroads of history in Anambra State, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: our beloved Light of the Nation has dimmed considerably, leaving too many of our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters stumbling in darkness.

The landscape of contemporary Anambra tells a tale of squandered potential and deferred dreams. Our once-vibrant streets, which should pulse with the industrious spirit of Ala Igbo, now echo with the haunting silence of fear. Insecurity has become our unwelcome companion, transforming our markets into theaters of anxiety and our roads into passages of peril. Kidnappings have graduated from newspaper headlines to lived nightmares. Our traders, those indomitable warriors of commerce who have built empires from market stalls, now close their shops early, looking over their shoulders as shadows lengthen across our land.

In education—that sacred ladder upon which the Igbo have traditionally climbed to greatness—we witness a heartbreaking descent. Our schools, once citadels of learning that produced professors, engineers, and captains of industry, now stand as monuments to neglect. Roofs leak like sieves during rainy seasons, chalk has become a luxury, and our teachers, those unsung heroes, work with spirits dampened by poor welfare.  The children of Anambra, inheritors of a broken legacy, lovers of knowledge  sit in classrooms, lagging behind their peers in other states and regions, their bright eyes searching for a future that seems increasingly elusive. “Akwukwo bu ife”– education is wealth – our ancestors proclaimed. But what wealth can we bequeath when our educational infrastructure crumbles like poorly baked clay?

Our infrastructure tells a much grimmer story. Roads that should facilitate the movement of goods and dreams have become obstacles and courses of potholes and erosion gullies. The same erosion that swallows homes and farmlands advances unchecked, like a hungry python devouring our patrimony. Roads spent with taxpayers money in a span of not less than two years groan under the weight of modern traffic, their earthen skeletons crying out for attention that never comes. When darkness falls, large swaths of our state remain shrouded in blackness—not the peaceful darkness of rest, but the oppressive darkness of neglect.

Read Also: I will retire from active service at 60 – Obi Cubana

The general wellbeing of our people has suffered immeasurably. Our hospitals lack essential medicines and equipment. Youth unemployment has spawned a generation of talented young men and women whose skills rust from disuse. The entrepreneurial spirit that defines the Igbo nation finds itself shackled by an environment hostile to innovation and growth , while our governor plays up the propaganda, of “One Youth, One Akaodo, One Skill”,  the elderly, who should be enjoying the fruits of their labor in dignity, instead watch helplessly as the Anambra they built slips through our collective fingers like sand.

But as our elders say, “Ife ojoo ga-agafe”– bad times will pass. Into this landscape of despair emerges a beacon of hope: Ikukuoma and his transformative vision encapsulated in the 8 Enablers.

Ikukuoma comes not as a political neophyte making empty promises, but as a man whose antecedents speak volumes before his lips move. His track record in both public and private sectors demonstrates a rare combination of competence, integrity, and genuine commitment to human development. Where others saw obstacles, he has created opportunities. Where others have preached, he has demonstrated practice.  His 8 Enablers—spanning security, infrastructure, energy, education, healthcare, economic empowerment, youth development and agricultural expansion—represent not mere campaign rhetoric, but a comprehensive blueprint for the state’s resurgence as the power house of Southern Nigeria beyond Lagos.

On security, Ikukuoma proposes a multi-layered approach that combines technology, community policing, and strategic partnerships. His vision for education goes beyond painting school buildings; it encompasses teacher welfare, digital literacy, and vocational training that equips our youth for 21st-century challenges. His infrastructure agenda addresses not just roads, but sustainable urban planning and environmental regeneration. This is the alternative narrative Anambra desperately needs—a shift from reactive governance to proactive transformation.

In Prince Ukachukwu’s Anambra, darkness will no longer steal dreams. His power revolution strategy recognizes that electricity is not merely about lighting bulbs—it is about illuminating possibilities. Every kilowatt generated becomes a catalyst for transformation, every power line erected becomes a bridge to prosperity.

Perhaps no aspect of Prince Ukachukwu’s vision captures the imagination quite like his revolutionary concept of three industrial clusters—each serving as a cathedral of commerce in Anambra’s three senatorial zones. These are not mere economic zones; they are destinies being forged, legacies being written in steel and in silicon valley like projects.

Also envisioned is a comprehensive three-level healthcare system for the state. At the foundation, primary care facilities will provide essential services to communities. Secondary care will offer specialized treatment and support, while tertiary care centers will deliver advanced medical expertise.

The plan includes establishing 21 general hospitals throughout the state to ensure accessible healthcare for all residents. Three reference hospitals will provide specialized services at the highest level, potentially attracting medical tourists and positioning Anambra as a regional healthcare hub.

This approach creates a structured pathway where patients can receive appropriate care at each level—from routine health services at local facilities to complex treatments at advanced medical centers.

In Ikukouma’s new Anambra, agriculture becomes agribusiness, farmers become entrepreneurs, and rural communities become centers of wealth creation. The uptakers program will ensure that every produce finds its market, every harvest translates to prosperity, and every farmer rises from survival to success. This is agriculture reimagined, farming revolutionized, and rural communities transformed.

The choice before us transcends partisan politics. It is fundamentally about the Anambra we will bequeath to generations unborn. As we say in Igbo land, “Ihe eji mara nwoke bu uka ya” – a person is known by their footprints. What footprints are we leaving for our children and their children? Can we, in good conscience, pass on this burden of dysfunction and decay? Or will we summon the courage to choose differently?

November 8th, 2025, is not just another date on the calendar. It is our appointed moment of redemption, our opportunity to reclaim the Light of the Nation’s rightful radiance. It is the day when we can collectively declare: “O zugo!”– Enough!

Our ancestors built this land with nothing but determination and vision. They transformed swamps into cities and villages into commercial hubs. That same blood of resilience flows through our veins. Ikukuoma and his 8 Enablers represent our generation’s answer to the call of duty, our chance to prove worthy of the legacy bequeathed to us.

In Ikukuoma, we will trust—not with blind faith, but with eyes wide open to the possibilities his vision unlocks. The future of Anambra depends on the choice we make. Let us choose hope over despair, competence over mediocrity, vision over stagnation.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu’s vision for Anambra is a prophecy foretold, we must thus bring it to fruition on  November 8th 2025, in Ikukuoma we will trust, in his vision for a glorious Anambra, we endorse!!!
