  • How ‘unapologetic’ proprietress cost Anambra school academic calendar loss

How ‘unapologetic’ proprietress cost Anambra school academic calendar loss

I’M sorry, they say, heals wounds. Experience has shown that this short statement can calm some frayed nerves in some sensitve  siuations.

But for her refusal to tender an apology, the Proprietress of Blessed Wisdom Model Nursery and Primary School, Onitsha, Anambra State, Mrs. Nkamigbo Ifeyinwa, has kept the school shut and her pupils sent home for one month.

This was made known by Commissioner for Education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, while clarifying controversies surrounding the short closure of the school.

     How it started

More than two months ago, a two-year-old pupil of the school, Ifechukwu Egbuniwe, reportedly sustained injuries at the school in a process that could not be explained by the authorities. This attracted the attention of the state government and other stakeholders after the incident went viral.

As a result, the state government, through the commissioner, closed the school, and a committee of inquiry was constituted to investigate the case of ‘grievous bodily harm, catastrophic and devastating injury’ on Egbuniwe.

Chuma-Udeh, who spoke to reporters in Awka, explained that the school was temporarily shut for failing to explain what happened to the toddler. She said, amid the development, that the state government was dragged to court by the proprietor through the state House of Assembly, demanding the re-opening of the school.

According to her, the ministry acted on a petition to the state government, to intercede between the school and the aggrieved parents, but regretted that the school’s management remained recalcitrant.

She said the matter wouldn’t have dragged on for long, if the proprietress had honoured the first and second invitations.

She said: “We received petition from a legal chamber about a two-year- old child battered in the school, with a cut tongue and broken femur. We’re here to arbitrate and I simply directed the Director of School to invite the administrator to know what the problem is about.

“The administrator refused to come, both on the first and second invitations. It was on the third invitation that she called me by 11pm as I was about to sleep, saying she won’t be able to honour the invitation because of an event she has in the school.

“I told her that if she refuses to honour our invitation the third time, that we will have no option than to put a temporary ban on her school until she explains what happened to the child that got battered.

“We’re appalled not just by her sheer impunity and adamancy, but her insensitivity to human life. This child could have been any of us and nobody could explain to both parents and government or any other stakeholder about what happened to her.

“I only did my job as a commissioner. Even when we placed the ban on her school, she refused to shut the school. We had to call Anambra State Joint Enforcement Committee (ANJEC) to effect the closure of the school. It was obvious the owner of the school was above the law.

“Meanwhile, we set up a committee of inquiry and invited the parents of the child, their lawyer and proprietress. This time around, she came with her husband and retinue of her staff.’’

The commissioner said if the proprietress had sent two of the school  staff members to represent her, the case would since been settled, adding that rather  ‘’But she refused to tell the state what happened’’.

“The committee after its investigation agreed that the matter was what apology or a milk of human kindness would have solved. We also discovered that within the four months the child had been in the situation, the school authority did not ask after her or seek to assist in the treatment.

“The committee came up with three resolutions: One, that the woman should placate the family of the child. Two, both families should get together and ensure the arm heals properly.

“But for more than five hours, we waited for the woman to say, “I’m sorry”, but she said she would never ever apologise, insisting it was not her fault. Meanwhile, both her lawyer and those who came with the child’s family apologised on her behalf.

“I believe that the proprietress feels the life of the child is meaningless. I have nothing against the woman, her school or closing down the school. I don’t think I have anything to gain.

“The incident happened to a little child and as a matter of policy, every child belongs to the state government, be it private or public schools. We’re here to protect the pupils. Our motto is reverence to human life.

“That you are running a private school doesn’t mean that you are not under the control of the state government and specifically the Ministry of Education.

“We got an apology letter from the school through the state House of Assembly and another letter from a law firm asking us to reopen the school with immediate effect. Things are not done that way.”

Chuma further noted that the school would be temporarily closed down until it reconciles with the parents of the child and offset the medical bills of the injured child.

“So, I want to state categorically that except the woman explains to us what happened to this poor child and gets along with the child’s family to ensure she has a holistic healing and two families assure government that everything is alright, we’ll wait for her in court.

“She will tell the court how the child went to school and got battered to such an extent,” she added.

But, while the media briefing was ongoing, the proprietress suddenly walked in, requesting to address the press. Surprisingly, she announced that the matter had been put to rest following her apology to the ministry.

She, however, denied the purported version of another apology letter by the school’s lawyer mandating the government to open the school with immediate effect.

She said: “To the glory of God, we’ve accepted to take the responsibility of making sure the child is fully okay and we’ve accepted further responsibility for the child.

“By the special grace of God, the matter has been resolved amicably. I’ve apologised, which has also been documented.”

  • PDP governors shun meeting in Anambra

The four Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors in the Southeast  – Emeka Ihedioha (Imo); Dave Umahi (Ebonyi); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) – did not attend Sunday’s zonal meeting in Anambra State.

The meeting, however, was attended by zonal PDP Chairman Austine Umahi and governorship hopefuls for Anambra 2021.

Leading the pack of governorship hopefuls were Dr Obiora Okonkwo, Senator Uche Ekwunife and Chris Azubuogu.

They vowed to work together to ensure victory in the 2021 governorship election to make the zone a PDP-controlled zone. They also vowed to prevent moneybags from hijacking the party.

Umahi urged interested aspirants to work hard rather than hoping to hijack the party.

He said: “We’re happy that Anambra PDP today is one family. There is no faction in the party, and I assure you that under my watch, no one man can hijack this party.

“My wish is that under my watch, Anambra will join PDP. I am not in doubt that you have the capacity to do this. You have people in Anambra who are capable, and the party in the state also has the resources.

“When we started working to win Imo State, I was going to the state weekly. It was like a joke but today Imo is a PDP state. We hope Anambra will be the fifth PDP state in the southeast, and when I am handing over, I will do so happy.”

Anambra State Chairman Ndubuisi Nwobu said the party would not do any form of merchandising in the election. He urged those interested in contesting the governorship to seek the people’s support and not think of inducing the party to hand them the ticket on a platter.

He said: “Anambra PDP comprises people who are easy to govern. I found this out since I became the chairman. All you need to cage an Anambra man is to keep telling him the truth. As elections approach, I want to say there won’t be merchandising. The primary election of will be very transparent.”

  • Monarch, subjects disagree over N150m

There is tension in Mkpu-nando Community, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, following allegations that the monarch, Igwe Alex Edozieuno, embezzled the N150 million land proceed from the government.

The residents on Tuesday staged a protest, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Our Igwe is a thief, he must refund our money”; “We don’t need this hungry monarch again”; “This Igwe should be arrested and prosecuted”; “Governor Willie Obiano come and rescue us from this criminal”, among others.

They marched on the Ama Umuawulu village square and other roads in the community, including the front of the monarch’s building singing war songs.

However, security operatives prevented the crowd from entering into the palace premises.

Protest leader Ifeanyi Iloakasia said the government should order the monarch to release the money.

According to him, the N150 million was the compensation the government paid to the community for its land. He added that the N40 million for the “Choose your Project” initiative from the government was also with the monarch.

He said: “If the government fails to come to our rescue, we will not have any other option than to seek for self help. The monarch and the estate valuer are on unholy alliance to rip off Mkpunando Community and we will not allow this to continue. The total money paid to the community by the government was N150 million, while the interest was N15 million, and till date, we have not received anything from our Igwe.”

But Igwe Edozieuno described the protesters as liars, saying he does not owe anybody or group. According to him, the main issue for their action was not the money, but because he won the kingship contest, the defeated family is now leading the protest against him.

He said: “They know I’m a rich man, that I have no time to touch their money. I made money when I was 20 years and rode my first car at that age. Their allegations hold no water.”

  • Anambra: Agony of eroded, flooded community

Eroded, flooded and raided by criminals, residents of Okpoko community in Anambra State feel abandoned by the state, report NWANOSIKE ONU and EMMA ELEKWA

It is no earthquake, but it continues  to bring earthshaking misery upon its helpless victims. In the Southeast, erosion is a common nightmare. In Anambra State alone, there is said to be over 1000 eroded sites. As the state’s red, loose soil moves, it breaks up well-built roads, buries shops and sends households crashing down very deep craters and gullies. Communities have been cut off, farmlands swept away as though by powerful currents. Many have died. The agony endures.

Tears and appeals have hardly brought any relief. Despair has since set in among the people.

That sums up the plight of residents of Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state. They have continued to lament what they call infrastructural neglect by successive governments in the state.

The people of the area comprising three quarters – East-Niger, Nkpikpa and Central Okpoko – wonder whether they are truly part of the state.

Those who spoke with The Nation said the area had been devastated by gully erosion, making most roads in the area impassable.

Mrs. Benedict Ibeazor who lives along Aririonwu Street in Central Okpoko, said they have been subjected to perpetual suffering due to ecological problems.

She said, “Whenever it rains, the street is like River Niger itself because nobody comes out for fear of being carried away by flood.

“Most times people flee their homes to avoid being submerged by flood and no government delegations have ever visited the area to undertake environmental impact assessment on the level of degradable and deplorable conditions of the area.

“By this time last year, we lost about five lives to the menace of flood as a result of poor drainage system in Okpoko.

“We have a working governor; maybe he has not been told about the conditions of the people of Okpoko.

“We are suffering and we are beckoning on him to please do at least two or three kilometers road for us; we will appreciate it.

“The only good road we used to enjoy before was Obodo-Ukwu Road but come now, if you pass through Obodo-Ukwu Road it will take you about one hour to cover just less than two kilometers of road .

“The entire place is in a total mess. The governor, as a matter of urgency, should come and do a total reconstruction of Obodo-Ukwu Road and Ede Road and also help us dredge the Sacamori drainage.

“Once that is done, our people will be happy and they will continue to support him and the government of Anambra State.

Another local, Chief Samuel Okorienta lamented several lives lost to flood in the community.

He said, “It has been like a recurring decimal for our people to lose their lives during rainy seasons in this place.

“We have been alienated from the development plans of successive governments in the state.

“No government has ever remembered us including the incumbent state government.

“Thank God for the bravery of one wheel barrow-pusher who saved the life of a small child who nearly got drowned as a result of flooding in Okpoko area this year.

“When you get to Okpoko, you will have mercy on us because there is nothing like erosion or drainage control there and once it rains everywhere becomes flooded and people begin to scamper for safety.

“Last year, we lost so many people including four bank staff who were drowned in the flood. They lost their lives just like that and many other people in the community.

“Anytime it rains here, everybody will be in fear. It is either a building collapse or peoples’ property got damaged or they lose their lives to flood.

“Obiano should have mercy on his constituents and direct the commissioners for works and environment to come and see how streets are destroyed and environment is nothing to write home about.”

The lawmaker representing the area in the state House of Assembly, Noble Igwe regretted that his constituency had been in the dark for too long.

He said, “I don’t know whether my constituency is part of Anambra State because if it is, government wouldn’t allow us  to suffer in perpetuity.

“Our people do not feel anything like government presence in my area. You will cry for Okpoko community if you visit the area.

“The whole place is in a very sordid condition. We do not have any single good road.

“The absence of good roads in Okpoko has led to the increase in crime because the security operatives do not have access to the nooks and crannies of the area to apprehend criminals.”

The lawmaker added, “We have a very big challenge when it comes to flooding. The only drainage system which is the sacamori in Okpoko is silted.

“The drainage is supposed to collect water from some parts of Awada, Fegge and the entire Okpoko down to Idemili River  to the River Niger but for now, the Sacamori is filled up making flood to destroy people’s lives and property.”

Igwe said the community lost no fewer than five lives to  flood in the area last year, expressing fear that it could be worse this year if nothing was done to mitigate the situation.

He implored the state governor, Willie Obiano to intervene and save them from the predicament.

“We are suffering and beckoning on our working governor to please do at least two or three kilometer roads for us, we will appreciate it,” he said.

Apart from the area being in perpetual darkness thanks to the Enugu Electricity Development Company (EEDC), one other problem facing the community is insecurity.

Hon Igwe said his constituents do not sleep for fear of criminals.

Igwe said virtually everything in his constituency was non-functional.

He mentioned that Okpoko Boys Secondary School, Okpoko Girls Secondary School and some others were all in very bad conditions such that students struggle through floodwaters to find their way home whenever it rained.

Another issue that called for concern, according to the lawmaker, was insecurity in Okpoko community.

He said there should be watertight security to reduce the crime rate in the area, pointing out that Ogbaru 1constituency had been in the dark for too long.

He added that it was time government remembered the constituency and included it in its development plans.

“Ogbaru 1 constituency is being ravaged by erosion, flood, poor housing facilities, absence of roads and other amenities as a result of neglect by past and present governments in the state.

Some of the streets The Nation visited in the area namely, Ogbudike, Nwokedi, Nicholas, Aririonwu and a host of others revealed no government presence in the area since the creation of the state.

Speaking with The Nation, Mrs.Benedict Ibeazor, who lives along Aririonwu Street in Central Okpoko said they had been subjected to perpetual suffering due to ecological problems.

She said whenever it rained, the street was like River Niger and nobody dared come out for fear of being carried away by flood.

Sometimes according to her,   people fled from their houses to avoid being submerged by flood, adding that no government delegations had ever visited the area to undertake an environmental impact assessment on the level of deplorable conditions of the area.

For Samuel Okorienta, who narrated the ordeals people go through at Nkpikpa axis of Ogbaru 1 constituency, noted that it had been a recurrent factor for people to lose their lives during rainy seasons in the area.

He bemoaned the absence of drainage facilities as well as the menace of flood and erosion, stressing that they had been allegedly alienated from urbanisation.

Igwe said, “The absence of good roads in Okpoko has led to the increase in crime because the security personnel do not have access to the nooks and crannies; they can’t move about to apprehend criminals because of bad roads.”

“Also, we have a very big challenge when it comes to flooding .The only drainage system which is the Sacamori in Okpoko is filled up with sand and that drainage is supposed to collect water from some parts of Awada, Fegge and the entire Okpoko down to Idemili River and finally to the river Niger”

“But for now, the Sacamori is filled up making flood to destroy peoples’ property and lives. By this time last year, we lost about five lives to the menace of flood as a result of poor drainage system in Okpoko”
