Anambra 2017: 450 delegates for HDP primary

No fewer than 450 delegates from the 326 wards in Anambra will participate in the governorship primary election of Hope Democratic Party (HDP) scheduled for Sept. 30.

The Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Sam Oraegbunam, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

Oraegbunam, who is also seeking the party’s nomination to fly its flag in the Nov. 18 election, said logistics had been put in place for a hitch-free primary.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, including the Police, had been duly informed of the exercise.

The chairman said that the congresses conducted by the party at the wards were transparent, and that only delegates elected from the congresses would participate in the primary election.

“We have informed the relevant agencies to come and observe what HDP is going to do on Wednesday; it is going to be one of the best primary elections in recent time.

“Our party is ready; the delegates know themselves, so there will not be issues unless people from outside want to cause trouble, and that is why the security agencies will be there and I am sure they will be very professional,” he said.

Oraegbunam maintained that HDP had grassroots support, saying that winner from the party’s primary had great chance of winning the governorship election.

  • Anambra poll: Letter to APC delegates

The primary election to nominate the APC flag-bearer in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election comes up this Saturday, August 19. This date is of significance because on that date, the fate of APC in this year’s election will be decided. The outcome of the primary election will determine whether APC will contest the November 18 election to win or to lose.

On August 19, the chances of the party and, indeed, the hopes of Ndi Anambra to effect the desired change in the governance of the state will rest squarely on the shoulders of the delegates to the primaries.

I, therefore, urge the delegates, as they step out on that day to cast their votes to elect a flag-bearer, to please be reminded that a rare opportunity has been thrust upon them to do that which is right and which will be beneficial, not only to them, but to their own children, all Anambra children and posterity at large.

I say to you all: You became a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) because you became tired of the status quo and wanted a change from failure to success and from stagnation to acceleration. You now have the opportunity to   effect that change by nominating someone who has ability and capacity to defeat the incumbent administration on November 18. History is beckoning you to write your name in gold, as a major catalyst in the change agenda in the state. How will you react? Will you be guided by emotions and sentiments to nominate that friend or relation of yours when, indeed, you know that he does not have what it takes to defeat the incumbent and win the election?

Will you be guided by earnest desire for the common good to nominate someone who has what it takes to defeat other contestants and win Anambra governorship for the APC and thereby kick-start that overdue change for which you became a member of the APC?

Dear delegate, it is now up to you to decide whether you want Ndi Anambra to remember you as the hero who effectively empowered change, or the villain who sabotaged the best chance for change we ever had.

I accept that it is always difficult to strike a fair balance between what is and what ought to be. As an indigene of the state residing in Ghana, I have followed this year’s election with uncommon interest because, however we look at it, the results of all elections impact on us positively or negatively. The last time, I wrote an article and asked the question: Can APC rescue Anambra State? My answer now to that question is:  Yes, APC can rescue Anambra State only if it succeeds in rescuing itself from enemies within.

I have studied the personal data and pedigree of all the gentlemen aspiring for the APC ticket and for the sake of our common good, I have decided to be more pungent and direct in this open letter. This year’s election is not any aspirant’s personal war. It is a battle between political parties and the best each party can do is to enter the war arena with its best war commander, and the best that each aspirant, truly loyal to his party can do, is to support the person among them who has the best chances to win the election for the party.

This is the major reason why I am writing this letter. It does not appear that some of the aspirants will allow the best among them to bear the flag because to them, it is not about the party and its members but about their personal ambitions. It is up to the delegates to correct this impression because they are party delegates and not personal delegates of the aspirants and therefore, they must be guided by a good sense of who has the best chance to win the election for the party.

After due research and studies, the name that effortlessly comes to mind as the most equipped and prepared at this time to win this year’s election for APC is Senator Andy Uba, and this is for six verifiable reasons which I urge the delegates to investigate.

The first reason is the man’s vast experience. The requisite experience of any leader is a beckoning asset that his administration can always leverage on. Uba was a close presidential aide for nearly eight years and no one can ordinarily dispute the wealth of experience that flowed from the job. He had contested and won Anambra governorship election before and has become familiar with the terrain. He is equally a two-term serving senator, openly acknowledged as having the highest number of bills in the Senate. Having served in the executive and the legislature, he knows how government works and his experience can be trusted and relied on, on this.

The second is that his belief in the core values of Anambra State is not in doubt. As a close presidential aide, he was instrumental to the appointment of the three most cerebral indigenes of the state ever to work at the same time for one administration. Charles Soludo, Dora Akunyili and Oby Ezekwesili were some of the finest gifts of Anambra State to Nigeria and Senator Andy Uba’s contributions to these appointments cannot be denied. His commitment to the completion of the 2nd Niger Bridge, the dredging of the River Niger and a sincere Anambra Airport are proofs that the best for the state will always remain his priority.

Thirdly, no one wins more elections than a politician who is on ground and close to the people. This is Andy Uba’s greatest advantage. In 2007, he established the structures with which he won that year’s governorship election. In 2011, he used the same structures to win his senatorial election and used the same structures to win his senatorial re-election in 2015. He has been using the same structures to campaign for this year’s election because unlike many politicians, he never dismantled his structures. They have kept him very close to the people for 10 years and as the D-Day approaches in this year’s election, there is really no time for experiments.  What APC needs to win this year’s Anambra guber is for its delegates to nominate him because he has existing and well-serviced structures to win the election.

The fourth reason is that the Senator has no godfather. He is his own boss and will be in charge of his own decisions and responsible for his own actions. From 1999 till date, we are all aware of the destruction godfatherism engendered in the state and how much it slowed our wheel of progress. Anambra State is tired of following someone who is following someone else.  Uba has a personal vision of what he wants to achieve in the state and this vision will not be impaired by the control of any godfather.

The fifth reason that urges the choice of this man is his extensive connections in high places that the state can leverage on for negotiations and concessions. The senator is well respected in and outside the state and as an astute strategist, he has become our established bridge across diverse national interests.

Finally, he sees leadership as service to the people and not an avenue to enrich self or acquire houses abroad. He seeks to use the office of the governor to continue doing good which he has been doing in his private capacity. If he could touch so many lives as an individual, he can only do much more as governor.

  • Anambra 2017 Poll: Guber aspirant resigns from UPP

Anambra 2017 Poll: Guber aspirant resigns from UPP

Chief Chuma Offodile, who lost the United Progressives Party (UPP) governorship candidature after the primary in Anambra has resigned his membership of the party.

Offodile, who withdrew from the party’s primaries on Aug. 19, announced his resignation at a news conference in Awka on Monday.

He said he was resigning from the party because the party allowed the primary to go on in spite of complaints of alleged infractions and manipulations of the delegates’ list.

He also said he was taking the position because a human life was lost on the day of the primaries due to confusion caused by the party leadership.

“In spite of all entreaties, including court order that the UPP should adhere to the provisions of its own constitution in the conduct of the Anambra Governorship primary, the party did just the opposite.

“After a hotly contested ward and local government congresses of the UPP Constitution, a delegates’ list comprised of local government chairmen and secretaries, treasurers, youth and women leaders were complied.

“To the surprise of party members, a delegates’ list copiously at variance with list of elected delegates was uploaded on the UPP website on July 2017.

“The website list contained strange names with no phone numbers unlike the authentic list,’’ Offodile said.

“When accreditation commenced on Saturday, Aug. 19, I got information that only those whose names were on the website were allowed.

“I drove down and hand over my letter of protest to the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Chris Uche and state Chairman, Dr Sylvester Igwilo that I would withdraw if they insist on using the illegal list.

“A couple of minutes later, I received a call that the disenfranchised delegates were becoming uncontrollable and that armed policemen were firing teargas to scare them and that one delegates had been taken to the Teaching Hospital in Awka.’’

He noted that by the time he got to the hospital, this delegate had given up the ghost, but his name was both on the authentic and illegal website list.

“It is the display of gross insensitivity to the life of a member that made me to reconsider my membership of the UPP.

“I hereby resign my membership with effect from today, Aug. 21, 2017.

“I urge all my supporters and all those who believe in the Biafran ideology of equity, freedom and justice to do same and await further directives,’’ Offodile said.

Chief Osita Chidoka, former minister of Aviation and Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps, emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of UPP from the primary, conducted at Emmaus House, Awka, on Saturday.

Chidoka had in his acceptance speech on Saturday called on every member of the party to eschew bitterness and join hands with him in the task of electioneering.

“I am extending hands of fellowship to everybody, including those that pulled out in the last minute; I am calling on them to join hands in the task of election.’’

Reacting to Offordile’s resignation, Igwilo said it was both a surprising and a hasty decision, noting that he had the right to do so.

The state chairman said though the party had yet to be officially notified of the resignation, the national secretariat would react appropriately in due course.

  • APC says no zoning of Anambra governorship ticket

APC says no zoning of Anambra governorship ticket

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said that it has not zoned the Anambra Governorship ticket to any part of the state as being speculated.

Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, APC National Publicity Secretary, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

“The attention of the NWC of the APC has been drawn to a report that the party has zoned the governorship ticket in Anambra State to a particular part of the state.

“This report is false, the party has not taken any such decision,’’ Abdullahi said.

He added that the party was committed to providing equal opportunity to all aspirants to compete freely and democratically at the primary.

The APC spokesman stressed that all aspirants cleared to contest in the coming primary should ignore the misleading report.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 12 aspirants including 11 male and one female were cleared to contest in the primary later in the week.

The aspirants are Mr George Moghalu, Sen. Andy Uba, Mr Paul Chukwuma, Madu Nonso, Bart Nwibe Bart and Mr Patrick Nwike.

Others are Mr Tony Nwoye, Mr Chike Obidigbo, Johnbosco Onunkwo, Adaobi Uchegbu, Adaobi Uchegbu and Uzoh Obinna.

Sen. Osita Izunaso, the party’s National Organising Secretary, had expressed optimism that the party would emerge victorious at the Anambra Governorship election slated for Nov. 18.

  • FAO distributes 51 bags of rice seeds to Anambra farmers

FAO distributes 51 bags of rice seeds to Anambra farmers

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) in collaboration with Africa Rice Nigeria has distributed 51 bags of improved rice seeds to 50 farmers in Anambra to boost production.

Mr Andrew Ikhadeunu, FAO National Project Coordinator, Rice Value Chain, told newsmen in Awka on Monday that the beneficiaries were earlier selected and trained in February.

“They were given demonstration plots for planting. Now they have harvested, we are following it up with the improved seeds of 51 bags of rice for them,’’ he said.

Ikhadeunu said that the aim was to support the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development which is the facilitator of the programme to empower rice farmers in the state.

“There is need for us to come out of hunger. If we are to put an end to massive rice importation, there is need to empower some Nigerians with such intervention programme.

“We look at it that there is need for us to support the farmers. We look at the states that have potentials, and Anambra state is one of them,’’ he said.

According to him, other benefiting states in the programme are Abia, Ekiti, Edo, Nassarawa and Jigawa.

He urged the beneficiaries to resist the temptation of selling the rice seeds, adding, “what you have is the best and with your cooperation, we can achieve food sufficiency in the country.

“You are the ones who will sustain the economy and create jobs for the teeming populace.”

Dr Francis Nwilene, Regional Representative of Africa Rice Nigeria said that the target was for each state of Nigeria to be self sufficient in rice production.

Nwilene, who was represented by Mr Jide Oladejo, one of the scientists in FAO, said that the major challenges of rice production in Nigeria were impurities.

He said that each rice seed variety should have the characteristic called “DUS’’ meaning distinct, uniform and staple.

“The programme will help to reduce importation of rice to each state, empowering the farmers and reduction of hunger and poverty,’’ he said.

Mr Pius Ogbonna, State Director of Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the farmers’ testimony had shown that the programme was a boost to efforts at ensuring food security.

“It is a welcome development for the youths and women to be busy in life,’’ he said.

Ogbonna called for timely supply of seeds, fertilizer, chemicals and machines to farmers.

Mrs Ngozi Ebuo, leader of Awka cluster, commended the donors for the gesture, assuring that the rice seeds would be used judiciously.

She said that their participation the training had further opened windows of opportunity for them to excel in rice production and empowerment.

“What FAO has done today is more than okay, but we still need tube-hole for water irrigation as water pumps, transplanting machines and driers are not available,’’ she said.

Anambra 2017: I will use security vote for infrastructure development -Aspirant

Chief Sam Oraegbunam, a gubernatorial aspirant in Hope Democratic Party in Anambra, says that if elected, he will use his Security Vote to address urgent needs of the people.

Oraegbunam, who is the chairman of the party in the state, made the assertion while speaking with newsmen on his ambition on Saturday in Awka.

He promises to run a government responsive to the yearnings of the people, adding: “If elected governor on Nov. 18, I will volunteer my security vote as contingency fund to be used to address urgent needs that affect the lives of the people.”

Oraegbunam said he would introduce a transparent budgeting process as well as focus on four-point paradigm, including infrastructure, health, agriculture and youth empowerment.

“We shall involve the people and undertake proper infrastructure development of the state.

“I promise to run a transparent administration, and having been around in the state, the people know me and my assets are well known to them.

“When elected governor, my first approach to governance will be to demystify the budget process by mainstreaming the input of the masses,’’ the aspirant said.

“I will also convert the security vote to a contingency fund, through which the state could intervene in critical sectors for the people’s good.

“This is a sacred pledge because we will hold the mandate in trust for the people of Anambra.’’

Oraegbunam, who described HDP as the best alternative political party in Anambra, expressed confidence of its victory at the polls and urged the people of the state to support him.

He described the party as the healthiest in Anambra, adding that whoever emerged from its primaries had better chances of winning the race to Anambra Government House.

“As a political party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP) set out from day one to do things differently regarding the nature of politics in Anambra.

“However, while HDP devoted time and energy to building an all-inclusive platform, other political parties were busy waiting for money bags to come take over their party.

“With barely four months to the governorship election, virtually all the so-called big political parties are infested with various crises; as we speak, HDP is the only political party in Anambra that has no internal bickering or crisis.

HDP has shown itself as the only hope for the long suffering people of Anambra, it is a party guided by the tenets of democracy,’’ he said.

  • UPP dissolves UPP Anambra acting executive

The National Working Committee (NWC), of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has dissolved the acting Anambra State working Committee of the Party led by Dr. Sylvester Igwilo.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by the National Secretary, Alhaji Sadeeq Masalla the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in an extraordinary meeting in Abuja, considered the report of an unfortunate rebellion by some misguided members of the acting State Working Committee (SWC) in Anambra State which was carried out through a press conference addressed by Dr. Sylvester Igwilo, the acting State Chairman of the Party.

“The National Working Committee acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) hereby dissolves with immediate effect the acting State Working Committee of the Party led by Dr. Sylvester Igwilo.

“Mr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, a member of the Party from Nnobi Ward 1, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, is also suspended from being a member of the Party for his culpability in the unfolding acts of rebellion against the leadership of the Party.

“The Party shall put the necessary machinery in motion to get to the root of the rebellion with a view to identifying the actual culprits and their sponsors.

“We wish to assure loyal members of our Party in Anambra State that no member who is innocent of this rebellion will suffer any sanction.

    APGA:1,119 delegates for primaries

No fewer than 1,119 delegates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will take part in the party’s primary election to produce its gubernatorial candidate for the Nov.18 election in Anambra.

Chairman of the party, Dr Victor Oye, made this known at a news conference in Awka on Monday and said that the primaries would hold on Tuesday in Awka.

Oye said the delegates were made up of 150 statutory and 969 elected from the 326 wards of the state.

He said that the election would be in the mode of ‘yes or no’ as only Gov. Willie Obiano purchased the form and met all the criteria.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police and other agencies had been informed and would be part of the process.

Oye said that there was no controversy over the leadership of the party as he remained the authentic chairman with the full legitimacy to produce APGA’s candidate for the election.

He blamed the media for fanning the embers of discord in the party, charging them to stick to the ethics of the profession by observing the principles.

“I have never been embattled; my seat has never been vacant or in contention.

“This matter would have been over long ago if the media played their role nobly,” he said.

  • Ozubulu church re-opens a week after gunmen attack

Ozubulu church re-opens a week after gunmen attack

Normal church services were held at St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Anambra, a week after gunmen killed  worshipers during early morning service.

The church was sealed after Aug. 6 massacre which claimed 11 people and 18 others sustaining various degrees of injury.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who attended the church service, reports that there was an initial low turn-out of parishioners but the attendance later picked up.

NAN reports that the service was attended  by officials of the state government led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu.

Also, present at the Mass was Aloysius Ikegwuonu, popularly called ‘Bishop” and one of the chieftains of the village, who was alleged to have been the target of the Aug 6 attack.

IIkegwuonu, who lost his father in the attack, refused to talk to newsmen, but one of his aides said his principal would talk at appropriate time.

Security operatives were seen in and around the church wielding arms.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Jude Onwuaso, the Parish Priest, encouraged parishioners not to be deterred by Aug 6 attack, adding that “God is still on the throne”.

Ownuaso said that the slain parishioners were at the right hand of the Almighty.

Some Parishioners told NAN that many of them were yet to overcome the shock of the invasion.

Mr Jude Okoye, a parishioner, said he forced himself to attend church service because of his deep religious understanding that a Christian believer must experience persecution to make to heaven.

NAN recalled that a delegation of the federal government led by Minister Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, visited the place on Saturday Aug.12 to condole with the state.
