The vision is being driven through the creation of statistics and data science collaboration laboratories at universities and institutions, training of statisticians and data scientists, provide support for research and innovation to improve statistical skills and data literacy.

By his appointment, the statistician and data scientist, who was also the first LISA Fellow in 2013, has now been charged with the task of driving the vision of LISA 2020 across Africa.

In the coming weeks, Awe will be visiting various institutions across the continent to train researchers and statisticians in a drive to fulfil the LISA 2020 vision.

Awe is confident about what his new role entails.

  • Anchor varsity gets nod for 14 new programmes

Seven hundred new spaces are available for admission seekers at Anchor University Lagos (AUL) thanks to the accreditation of 14 new programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

At a press conference held at the university on Tuesday, Afolayan said the institution could adequately accommodate 50 students in each of the new programmes which include Information Technology, Physics and Electronics, Banking and Finance, Computer Science, Chemistry, Geology and Applied Geophysics. Others are: Industrial Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, French, Mathematics and International Relations.

Afolayan said with the new additions, AUL now has 29 accredited programmes across three faculties – Natural and Applied Sciences; Management and Social Sciences; and Humanities, housed in its Ayobo, Lagos campus, which has a capacity to accommodate 2,000 students.

“For the 29 programmes on gorund, we have enough facilities.  Our Ayobo Campus can conveniently accommodate 2,000 students. And all our students can stay on campus.  We are expanding to our annex which is behind the second gate of this campus.  We have another campus being developed in Mowe where some of our faculties will be.  We are here (in Ayobo) on the basis of our first phase development,” he said.

For a university that started operation February last year, Afolayan said the institution had done well for itself in the area of research, hosting international programmes, students’ achievements and collaboration with other local and international institutions.

He said this was because AUL had set an ambitious goal of being among the top five universities in 10 years.

The VC said: “Anchor University started operations formally on February 1, 2017 and the pioneer staff and management did not waste time to get to work.  Our vision is clear and we have a focus to become one of the top five universities in Nigeria within the first 10 years.

“Today, less than two years since we started, our pioneer students are already in their classrooms for the third academic session.  This feat is achieved without cutting any corner or breaking any rules guiding the academic calendar of the university in Nigeria.

“In the first few months of our inception, Anchor University presented students for professional examinations in Accounting.  Ladies and Gentlemen, it will interest you to know that we recorded about 95 per cent pass in the examination; and that was just about six months after we started.  Since then, many of our students have continued to prove themselves in external examinations.”

Regarding international collaborations, Afolayan said AUL had hosted five programmes and signed pacts with three notable institutions.

He said: “As at today, Anchor University has hosted no less than five international training and conferences on this campus.  We have had professors, trainers and experts from the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, Kenya and many other parts of the contry converging here for training that we believe hold great prospects for the future.

“There have been some collaboration and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with local and international institutions.  Last year, Anchor University signed an MOU with the University of Colorador Boaulder, U.S.A; that MOU gave birth to the Anchor University Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Science and Data Analysis (AULISSDA).  As at the time the laboratory was inaugurated, it was the third in Nigeria and the seventh in the world.  About middle of this year, we signed another MOU that would promote technological research in AUL with the University of Applied Sciences, Dresden, Germany.

“Today, there is a special Space Centre in AUL, which is devoted to promoting research and training in space and atmospheric enquiries.  The centre works in collaboration with the Indian Centre for Space Physics.  There are other ongoing discussions with reputable institutions globally to ensure AUL has access to the best facilities and supports that would pitch us with the best globally.”

In Nigeria, the VC said AUL has a pact with the University of Lagos and was in the process of concluding one with the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO).

“Locally, we are working with the University of Lagos to ensure the best system, especially on academic training and examinations, is in place.  We are also almost done with an MOU with the Federal Institute of industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) on students training and staff exchange in entrepreneurial skills.  Officials of the institute were here a few weeks ago to support us in a national workshop on Molecular Biology,” he said.

Apart from ensuring facilities and requisite manpower are in place, Afolayan said the university placed great premium on character development for both staff and students.  He said this was achieved through regular meetings several days of the week during which members of the university community are exposed to biblical truths capable of improving their lives.

“AUL is a faith-based university.  In AUL we want to scrutinise all our stakeholders that they have in-built potentials and we do that during our weekly interactions.  On Monday we have indepth bible sessions – all students and staff are brought together to be built on the knowledge that sets free,” he said.

Afolayan thanked, Pastor Williams Folorunso Kumuyi, founder of Deeper Life Bible Church, which owns the university, for his support to the institution since its inception.

He said admission into the university which currently has 300 students  was still open.
