    EUROPA LEAGUE: Ideye relishes progress with Olympiacos

    Olympiacos striker, Brown Ideye has expressed gratitude to the club fans after the team secured a place in the next round of the Europa League despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Young Boys.

    The Super Eagles forward who has scored seven goals for the Greek side was in action for 90 minutes at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki.

    Olympiacos are 2nd in Group B with 8 points and will move to the next round with leaders APOEL on 9 points.

    Nigerian forward Olanrewaju Kayode however failed to hit target as Austria Wien lost 1-2 at home to AFC Astra in their Europa League clash on Thursday night.

    Kayode who is expected to be called up by Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr for January’s international friendly against Egypt in Dubai, could not replicate his Austrian Bundesliga form where he has so far scored five goals this term against the Romanian side, leaving Austria Wien on third position with just five points in Group E, two points behind the Romanian side and six point adrift leaders, Roma.

    Super Eagles left-back, Elderson Echiejile was missing as Standard de Liège record a 1-1 away draw to Celta de Vigo in their Europa League clash at the Estadio de Balaídos. The Nigeria defender has made just three appearances for the Belgian side since joining on loan from Monaco.

    Midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi tasted 90 minute of action as he helped Genk secure a place in the next round following a 1-0 victory over Rapid Wien at the Luminus Arena. Ndidi’s superb form this season has seen him become a £16m transfer target for Premier League side, Leicester City.

    Defender, Leon Balogun was in action as Mainz 05 held Saint-Étienne to a goalless draw at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. The 28 year old was however booked in the 16th minute of encounter.

    Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti helped Genk through to the next round after recording a 2-2 draw with Sporting Braga to top Group F with nine points. While Simon was substituted in the 70 minutes for Brecht Dejaegere, Esiti was replaced in the 85th minute by Jérémy Perbet.

    Raheem Lawal featured for 29 minutes as his Turkish side, Osmanlıspor lost 2-1 at Steaua Bucureşti. The Nigeria international replaced Adam Maher in the 61 minute as a precaution after the Netherland star was yellow carded. Despite the loss, Osmanlıspor sit on top Group L with seven points.

    W/Cup: Omeruo, Iwobi return as Mikel leads Eagles against Zambia

    Months after his last appearance for the Super Eagles, Alanyaspor of Turkey defender Kenneth Omeruo and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi make a return to the national team as Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi tops the list of 23 players invited for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Zambia’s Chipolopolo in Ndola on October 3.

    In the list released on Thursday by the Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, the Franco-German tactician retained belief in the squad that piped Tanzania 1-0 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Uyo on September 3, with the inclusion defender Kenneth Omeruo, Belgium –based mid-fielder Anderson Esiti and English Premiership duo Isaac Success and Alex Iwobi.

    Skipper Mikel John Obi, assistant skipper Ahmed Musa, goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, defender Elderson Echiejile, mid-fielder Ogenyi Onazi and in –form Manchester City of England forward Kelechi Iheanacho are in the 23 –man roster.

    Rohr has excused Watford FC forward Odion Ighalo, who will attend his father’s burial in Nigeria on Saturday, 8th October – eve of the big match at the Levy Nwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

    Injured KAA Gent of Belgium striker Moses Simon is listed after assuring Coach Rohr that he has started treatment and would be fully healed well ahead of the encounter.

    All invited players are expected to start arriving in Abuja from Sunday, October 2.

    AFCON: Esiti, Mbakogu may get Eagles’ invitation

    Estoril midfielder Anderson Esiti and Carpi forward Jerry Mbakogu may be included in the Super Eagles squad for next month’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Chad.

    The home based players invited for the game are already in camp and sl10.ng gathered that Esiti and Mbakogu are two names that have been penciled down by Stephen Keshi for the game.

    The duo are among the list of foreign based players expected to be announced this week for the AFCON qualifier slated for Kaduna.

    Esiti made 16 appearance in the Portuguese league for Estoril and eight in the Europa league where his fine performances has led to talks of a move to French side, Monaco.

    Mbakogu scored 15 goals to help the modest Serie B outfit gain promotion to Italian top flight and he is expected to boost the Eagles forward-line that has been lacking goals of recent.

    The 22-year-old is heavily tipped to depart Carpi, with recent reports suggesting Udinese is leading the chase for his signature when the transfer window opens.

    Monaco targets Anderson Esiti

    Estoril of Portugal midfielder, Anderson Esiti, has attracted interest from French Ligue 1 side, AS Monaco.

    Reports say Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim is a big admirer of Esiti’s qualities and has been monitoring his performances since he moved to Estoril from Leixoes.

    However, a winter move has not been mooted by Monaco, but the principality club faces stiff competition from PSV Eindhoven and Panathinaikos, who have all shown interest in Esiti’s services, sl10.ng reports.

    James Callisto, who manages the Nigerian affairs, also confirmed interest from several clubs in Europe, but said any deal for his client has to wait till June.
