Edo residents count gains of anti-crime strategy, laud govt, new CP
Residents of Edo State are currently breathing a sigh of relief with the marked improvement in security across the state following the anti-crime strategy of the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, backed by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration.In just one week as the new sheriff in town, Kokumo’s heat on kidnappers is yielding unprecedented result with three persons abducted by kidnappers last month, released from the kidnappers’ den, aside the proactive and aggressive policing across the state.The Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has made real his promise to implement the state’s new security architecture with the new Police Commissioner, a promise he made while receiving Kokumo last week at the state Government House, in Benin City, as the new CP.“Although it is not yet uhuru with regard to the security situation in the state, there is remarkable improvement now,” Mr Ode Silver, a resident of the state said.Mrs Joy Ahanor simply said “Edo is safer now, compared to the days of the former police commissioner.”To the credit of the new partnership between the Edo State Government and the police command is the release of three kidnap victims and the arrest of over 50 suspected criminals.“We will give you the needed support to succeed. We believe that the responsibility for restoring law and order rests with the police. We hope that you will fulfill your constitutional responsibility by helping us enforce law and order in Edo State,” Obaseki promised.The governor urged the new police boss to urgently change the security plan he inherited to curb crimes in the state. “We need to change the entire security architecture in the state and together we will work to implement it and address all the security challenges in the next one week,” he added.In response to the governor’s appeal, barely 48 hours of assuming work as the Commissioner of Police in Edo state, the kidnapped retired Superintendent of Police, Chief James Omafuaire regained his freedom.He was abducted two days earlier with his wife and one other person by suspected Fulani herdsmen at his Ikpeshi quarry site in Akoko Edo Area of Edo State.Omafuaire’s release was followed by the arrest of seven members of the gang suspected to have murdered a lecturer at the University of Benin ( UNIBEN ), Prof. Paul Otasowie.The lecturer was shot dead by gunmen at his private residence on October 4, in Benin City.Parading the suspects along with 46 other suspected criminals; kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists and car snatchers, the state police commissioner, Mr. Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, said the Professor’s mobile phone was recovered from one of the suspects, adding that family members of the lecturer have come forward to identify the phone.On his fifth day in office the Edo State Police commissioner paraded four suspected kidnappers who abducted one Mr Andy Ehanire, the manager of Ogba Zoo and Nature park, in Benin.They allegedly killed three policemen in the operation and were said to have collected N25 million and $100,000 as ransom were arrested in Sapele, Delta State.Confirming the incident, Spokesman of the Edo State police command, DSP Moses Nkombe, said the suspects were arrested in their hideouts.He said “We are making effort now to recover arms and other things. They were arrested in Delta State early Thursday morning and they were already in Benin before 5a.m. They have confessed to the crime. One of them who shot the policemen and the driver are among the people arrested.”The arrest of Ehanire’s kidnappers was followed by the release of the relative of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was kidnapped in Edo North, but abandoned in the bush after the new police commissioner and his men charged at the kidnappers.On Thursday, November 2, Popular Edo musician, Mr. Osayomore Joseph, who was kidnapped by gunmen was released. Osayomore regained his freedom on Thursday after spending almost a month in captivity.His manager, Mr. Frank Ugbomah, and State Chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, Mr. Willy Eghe-Nova, confirmed his release. -

‘Arrests of kidnappers, Otasowie’s murderers Justify Obaseki’s insistence on new CP’
The Edo State Government has said that the recent arrests by the State Police Command of seven persons in connection with the murder of Prof. Paul Otasowie, a lecturer with the University of Benin, killers of three police officers who also kidnapped Andy Ehanire, the Chief Executive of Ogba Zoological Garden, justify Obaseki’s insistence on a new commissioner of police for the state.
While commending the new Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, the state government, through the Special Adviser, Media and Communication Strategy to the Edo State Governor, Crusoe Osagie, stated that the security challenges in Edo required a highly experienced operational police officer at the helms of affairs and that it is quite gratifying that CP Kokuma has since hit the ground running, “a result of which is the large hurl of arrests in barely 48 hours of his assumption of duty in Edo State”.
Otasowie, a senior lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was on October 4 killed by gunmen in Ekehuan area, in Oredo Local Government Area of the state.
The deceased, who was the Director of the institution’s Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme, was said to have been shot in front of his residence.
The police explained that seven out of those principally responsible for the killing have been arrested and each has given useful statement to the police. The police further stated that four suspects in the murder of three police officers and the kidnap of Ehanire of have been arrested.
The police, through Moses Mkombe, the force public relations officers, said that the command is still on a manhunt for the rest other members of the group.
“Each of them has spoken on the role he played in the crime and we have been able to extract useful information from them. We are currently on a manhunt for the other members of the gang,” Mkombe said.

Gunmen abduct ace musician, Osayomore Joseph, shoot wife
Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a popular musician and social critic, Ambassador Osayomore Joseph.
His wife whose name could not be ascertained as at press time was said to been shot in the head.
Osayomore was kidnapped at about 10pm at Orovie village off Upper Ekewan road in Egor local government area.
On September 24, three policemen stationed at the Ogba Zoo and Nature Park were killed by kidnappers while the Managing Director of the Zoo, Dr. Andy Ehanire was abducted.
Andy, a brother to the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, is yet to be released by his abductors.
On September 27, the Parish Priest of St. Benedict Church, Iddo 2, Okpella of Auchi Diocese, Fr. Lawrence Adorolo was abducted along Auchi-Okene highway while returning from Igarra in Akoko-Edo local government area.
He was released two days later after the Catholic authorities refused to pay ransom.
Reacting to the abduction of Osayomore, Edo Police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, said police received report about the abduction at about 11pm.
DSP Nkombe said security operatives have been drafted to hot spots across the state.
He assured that the police would do its best to secure the release of Osayomore.

Edo Police Command arrests 207 suspects in three months
The Edo Command of the Nigerian Police Force says it arrested no fewer than 207 suspects for various criminal activities between July and September.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Haliru Gwandu made this known on Wednesday in Benin in an interview.
Gwandu said that 12 vehicles, 35 assorted arms with 143 live cartridges were recovered from the suspects within the period under review.
The police commissioner explained that the command had received 38 reports on armed robbery and arrested 90 suspects.
He said that so far, 22 of the armed robbery cases were in court while nine were under investigation.
The police chief also said 31 suspected kidnappers allegedly involved in 17 abductions were arrested during the period.
Gwandu further said that 57 suspected cultists were nabbed during the period, out of which 31 were charged to court and 26 cases still under investigation.
“In the case of murder, we have 26 reported cases, 16 suspects arrested, nine charged to court, 22 victims and 26 cases under investigation”, he said.
The police commissioner said the command had also arrested three suspects in a case of human trafficking involving a victim.
He stressed that the command was committed to fighting crime and bringing it to the barest minimum in the state.
Gwandu attributed the achievements recorded by the command in the last three months to the determination of the personnel to tackle all forms of criminal activities in the state.
Meanwhile, two prominent people in the state, Mr Andy Ehanire, a brother to the Minister of state for Health, and Chief Osayomore Joseph, a social crusader and musician, are still being held by kidnappers.
Ehanire was kidnapped a fortnight ago, while Joseph was abducted this Wednesday from his residence in Benin.

Three policemen killed as gunmen kidnap Ogba Zoo boss
Three policemen posted to provide security for fun seekers at the Ogba Zoo and Nature Park in Oredo local government area of Edo State have been killed by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.
The three policemen were killed at about 6pm while their arms and ammunition were collected by the attackers.
Director and Chief Executive of the Ogba Zoo and Nature Park, Dr. Andy Ehanire, was abducted by the gunmen.
It was gathered that the killing disrupted activities at the zoo as many fun seekers scampered for safety.
Edo State police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, who confirmed the killings and abduction on the phone said the situation has been brought under control.
DSP Nkombe said the attackers would soon be arrested as security has been beefed up in the area.
He assured members of the public that the zoo is safe for fun seekers.
