  • Neymar watches from stands as PSG beat Rennes to claim Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain substitute Angel Di María scored the winner with a spectacular free-kick and Kylian Mbappé was also on target as the Ligue 1 champions recovered to beat Rennes 2-1 and lift the French Super Cup in Shenzhen on Saturday.

Adrien Hunou had given the French Cup winners the lead despite PSG’s dominance in the first half and Thomas Tuchel’s side eventually earned the victory their superiority deserved thanks to the second-half goals from Mbappé and Di María.

PSG’s seventh successive Super Cup win is a record – eclipsing the six won by Lyon from 2002-07 – and means they will start the defence of their Ligue 1 title in high spirits despite doubts over the future of Neymar. The 27-year-old Brazil forward, who has been linked with a return to Barcelona, was watching the match from the stands of the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre stadium, and was reluctant to celebrate the victory with teammates.  He nonetheless received one of the victory medals.

He saw Rennes take a surprise 13th-minute lead seconds after PSG defender Thilo Kehrer had clipped the top of the crossbar with a header at the other end. Hunou made no mistake for Rennes when he emerged unmarked to casually steer Benjamin Bourigeaud’s centre beyond Alphonse Areola with the inside of his left thigh.

It was a rare sight of goal in the opening 45 minutes for the French Cup winners, with PSG regularly threatening to level the scores but without success.

Pablo Sarabia’s long-range attempt arced away from goal before Edinson Cavani fired a free-kick off target, while Mbappé dragged a shot wide five minutes before half-time. Cavani went closer just before the break, stabbing wide from inside the six-yard box when he reacted first to Tomas Koubek’s fumble.

The long-awaited equaliser came 12 minutes into the second half when Marquinhos lofted a perfectly weighted ball that found Sarabia unmarked behind the Rennes defence and his pass allowed Mbappé to score into an unguarded net.

PSG’s winner came 17 minutes from time, with Di María – introduced in the 61st minute for new signing Ander Herrera – hit a left-footed dipping curler over the wall beyond Koubek

  • Neymar treble inspires PSG to 6-1 rout of Red Star

Paris St Germain got their Champions League campaign back on track with a 6-1 home rout of Serbian side Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday as Brazil forward Neymar lit up a lopsided Group C clash with a hat-trick.

Angel Di Maria, Edinson Cavani and France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe added a goal each as the French champions ripped into 1991 European Cup winners Red Star, who were spared a heavier defeat by goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

The result left PSG on three points from two games after their opening 3-2 defeat by Liverpool.

The outcome was also Red Star’s heaviest defeat in Europe, ending their 38-match unbeaten run in all competitions stretching back to last season.

In spite of the obvious gulf in class, PSG coach Thomas Tuchel praised his team for keeping up a high tempo, which barely allowed the visitors to get out of their own half and singled out the outstanding Neymar.

“We’ve improved our intensity in every game and you saw that tonight,” Tuchel told a news conference.

“Neymar is one of the best players in Europe. We have several of the best in our team — not just Neymar. We’ve won lots of games because we have the best players, but also because we were the best team. That’s very important.”

It was one-way traffic from the start as the home side raced into a 2-0 lead with two goals in two minutes as Neymar curled a delightful free kick past Borjan in the 20th minute before he converted a fine run and pass by Mbappe.

Cavani made it 3-0 with a deflected shot from inside the penalty area in the 37th minute, before Di Maria added a fourth from close range after Thomas Meunier floated in a superb pass with the outside of his foot.

In between the goals and early in the second half, Borjan pulled off a string of superb saves to deny Neymar and Mbappe on multiple occasions as PSG carved open Red Star’s defence at will, with Mbappe also guilty of some sloppy finishing.

Mbappe finally found the back of the net in the 70th minute after a dazzling move involving Neymar and Juan Bernat left the 19-year-old with a simple tap in from six metres.

Red Star, playing in the competition’s group stages for the first time, scored their maiden goal on the big stage when midfielder Marko Marin buried a shot from 12 metres into the top corner in his team’s first purposeful move.

Borjan could only offer a wry smile, when Neymar put the icing on the cake of a brilliant individual performance as he unleashed another breathtaking free kick from 30 metres, in the 81st minute before he was substituted.

Cavani had the ball in the back of the net again shortly afterwards, but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside as PSG kept their feet on the pedal until the final whistle.

  • Expect no less than before at Russia 2018 as quarter-finals get underway

The 2018 FIFA World Cup enters the quarter-finals stage on Friday, with the France versus Uruguay fixture at Nizhny Novgorod kicking off a two-day line-up of four potentially-explosive matches.

The quarter-finals have come with the usual expectations and surprise element of any tournament of this nature, yet they have not come without a trace of the unexpected.

The first round/group phase did not do so much to shock us, other than see off title-holders Germany, world number 10 Poland and the five African sides.

However, the Round of 16 has lived up to expectations, not just with the exit of 2010 champions Spain, two-times champions Argentina and Portugal, but the teams’ star players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Andres Iniesta, Isco, Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria,Gonzalo Higuain, Ricardo Quaresma, Sergio Ramos and Javier Mascherano are now watching the competition from their homes.

They joined the likes of Tony Kroos, Thomas Muller, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski who had been on the sidelines pretty much earlier.

Their situation, very much unfavoured, is what the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe will now try to avoid.

France with their array of megastars such as Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante will be wary of what Suarez and Cavani can do upfront.

But the Uruguayan defence line should worry them much more, with the Atletico Madrid defensive pair of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at the centre of affairs.

Later on Friday, Belgium who made an incredible comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 will face Brazil at Kazan and knowing that a confrontation with Brazil or Belgium awaits.

Brazil should rather be wary of Belgium, with Eden Hazard and Romelo Lukaku, have gone 23 games unbeaten and have the best record at this tournament so far.

They have won all their matches so far, scoring 12 and conceding four goals, but the grittiness which saw them through against Japan is something Brazil will need much of.

Brazil have struggled to survive against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia, in spite of Neymar, Willian, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Marcelo not looking out of form.

However, the fact that they have not conceded again since the only goal against Switzerland in their opening match is something Belgium will have to think a lot about.

England have been thinking so much that they now have a good chance of another World Cup win since 1966, with the tournament draw being good to them.

They do not to have to face the likes of France, Uruguay, Brazil or Belgium until July 15, and they feel Sweden may not be too much headache.

But when they face off on Saturday in Samara, they will have to contend with a side which has shown so much resilience, even in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They beat The Netherlands and Italy in qualifying for Russia, made life difficult for Germany and beat South Korea and Mexico in Russia, and eliminated Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Usually a quiet side, Sweden can bring down England if they keep under check Harry Kane and Jesse Lingard, as well as likely substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy.

The good thing for the Swedes is that, in spite of Kane’s leading goalscorer status, England do not have what they do not have, and this makes the game balanced.

Russia have not disappointed so far, and it is a good preview for them as they head to Fisht Stadium in Sochi to host Croatia on Saturday.

It is a likely quiet and not-extraordinary game, with Russia being the lowest FIFA-ranked team at the tournament.

While Russian hopes have risen since the penalty kicks shootout defeat of Spain, it may just serve the hosts well not to count their chickens b efore they are hatched.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have provided the needed midfield inspiration, while Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic have spearheaded offensive runs which have produced not goals but team game stability.

The Croats are aware of their capability and Modric, while speaking at their pre-match press conference on Wednesday, said team compatibility is a weapon they would use to great effect.

“We know it is going to be tough against Russia, especially as they are the hosts, but we know ourselves and what we can do. We will do it as expected,’’ he said.

However, will they be able to reenact the performance that led them to the 1998 semi-finals in France, having to play against a team and its expectant nation of 144 million?

It is however Russia’s best World Cup run since the 1966 semi-finals appearance, and they will want to go further than this quarter-finals stage not just because they are the hosts.

They have shown good strength of character with the way they overcame Spain, and swung their compatriots who never believed in them before behind them.

While they can shock the Croats, and which can happen, it may just be one other shock in a tournament that is still capable of bringing up more shocks.

  • Di Maria unveils new tattoo ahead Nice clash

Angel di Maria is clearly proud of his roots and he paid homage to them permanently on Thursday.

The Argentina flyer has had a leg tattoo depicting his childhood.

The artwork which is situated on his right calf features his childhood home in Rosario’s district of Perdriel, a football and the Argentina flag.

Di Maria was clearly delighted with his new ink by accompanying his Instagram story with the caption: ‘My history on my skin!!!’ once it was completed.

The 30-year-old incorporated the smiley face emoji as well as he thanked his compatriot and tattooist @arturholykoi on his social media platform.

Di Maria will be hoping to celebrate his new tattoo with a goal and victory when Paris Saint-Germain visit Nice in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Paris Saint-Germain’s defeat away to Nice late last season ended their hopes of winning the league. However, this time, PSG heads south to Nice with a huge lead at the top of the table and within touching distance of a fifth title in six seasons.

Unai Emery’s side are 17 points clear of defending champion Monaco, albeit having played a game more, and it seems only a matter of time before the league is wrapped up.

But Nice are hard to beat at home, even more so when PSG are visiting. The French giants were hassled, harried and out-fought during last season’s 3-1 defeat in late April.

Lucien Favre’s side are in seventh place this season, but pushing Rennes and Nantes hard to finish in fifth and seal a potential spot in next season’s Europa League.

Tax fraud: Angel Di Maria fined £1.76million

Angel Di Maria has been handed a one-year prison sentence and fined £1.76 million after admitting tax fraud.

The former Manchester United winger admitted two separate counts of fraud which each carry a six-month sentence.

Now with Paris Saint-Germain, Di Maria was found guilty of defrauding the Spanish government a sum of £1.14m during his time at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014.

However, the 29-year-old is unlikely to spend any time behind bars. In Spain, sentences of under two-years are often suspended if the convicted person has no previous criminal record.

The Argentine had previously made a deal with authorities to avoid a trial at the Spanish Supreme Court.

Last year, Lionel Messi was found guilty of tax fraud along with his father and, though the Barcelona star was sentenced to 21 months in prison, did not serve time as it was suspended.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has come out fighting in a row with the Spanish tax authorities, claiming he paid more than €26million (£23m) between 2010-2013.

Manchester United have vowed to stand by their manager after he was accused of defrauding the taxman of €3.3m (£2.9m).

The United boss, valued at £61m by the Sunday Times Rich List last month, faces allegations of not paying taxes on image rights during his time as Real Madrid coach, with a lawsuit filed against him by the Public Prosecutor’s office in the capital.

However, a statement by his agency Gestifute read: ‘Jose Mourinho has not received any notification with regards to the news published today. To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers, who were hired for the inspection process.

‘Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 until May 2013, paid more than 26m euros in taxes, with an average tax rate over 41 per cent, and accepted the regularisation proposals made by the Spanish tax authorities in 2015, regarding 2011 and 2012, and entered into a settlement agreement regarding 2013.’

Cristiano Ronaldo, who played under Mourinho at Real Madrid, has been called to testify on July 31 over allegations that he hid £12.9m income from tax authorities.

World Cup: Di Maria doubtful for Holland clash

Argentina’s Angel Di Maria could miss the remainder of the World Cup, kickOffNigeria.com reports.

The Real Madrid winger limped off with a thigh injury in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Belgium in Brasilia.

Di Maria’s agent, Eugenio Lopez, said the player has torn his thigh muscle, meaning he will miss Wednesday’s semi-final clash against Netherlands, and the final on Sunday.
