Kaduna blast shows nobody is safe, says Anglican primate

The Primate of the Anglican Church, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, yesterday said that despite the devastating effect of Wednesday bomb blasts in Kaduna, it has its positive aspect, which is a signal that nobody is safe irrespective of his religion and ethnicity.

Asked to comment on the bomb blast during the 3rd Session of the second synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Diocese of Kubwa, Abuja, he called on Nigerians to unite and end terrorism.

He said: “That is a signal of insecurity. And again, it sends another signal, which I think has an aspect of it that is positive.

“ That is let everybody east, west, north, south, Christian, Muslims, African traditional religionists, let’s put hands together and stop this terrorism. Nobody is spared, nobody is free, nobody is safe.”

Okoh said that the abduction of the Chibok school girls has aggravated the state of insecurity in the country.

According to him, the entire problem would have been solved only when the Boko Haram sect militants lay down their arms and make themselves available for dialogue.

Asked whether he was satisfied with the Federal Government’s effort at rescuing the kidnaped school girls, the cleric explained that: “More than that, if the Federal Government wants to do bravado, all those girls will all be dead.”

He described the militants as very complex people who could distribute the girls to different locations.

Okoh admonished Nigerians that any attempt to forcefully rescue the school girls could result in a worse problem.

He said: “So, allow the government to take its time to rescue these people the way it knows how to and bring them back alive.

“To my mind, bringing them alive is more important than allowing them to destroy lives of those girls. They could easily be rehabilitated when they are out. They could be sent to schools locally or abroad, there could be medical facilities to take care ogf them. Please lets be patient so that these girls can

come back alive. Otherwise, Boko Haram has shown to everybody that it can kill.”

Also speaking, the Bishop, Diocese of Kubwa, Reverend Duke Akamisoko, revealed that the National University Commission (NUC) has given approval for the commencement of academic activities in Anglican University in 2015.

  • Anglican Primate to govt: give youths jobs

Anglican Primate to govt: give youths jobs

Former Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Nicholas Okoh has advised Nigerians to tread the path of peace and shun all acts of violence, especially as the nation prepares for general election in 2015.

He urged the government to provide jobs for the teeming youths.

Rev. Okoh gave the advice yesterday in Abuja at a special New Year service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp.

He said Nigerians should continue to have confidence in God, despite of the challenges experienced in the previous years.

The Primate noted that there were a lot of unpleasant comments going round and against the progress of the country, and said that Nigerians should have confidence in God because “God has always rescued us in times of difficulties and anxieties’’.

“‘We know that as we go towards 2015, tension will continue to rise but in the end, no evil will befall Nigeria; Nigeria will not only continue but it will be strong and grow better and powerful.

“‘We want our people to relax and they should not cooperate with people who have evil intentions because in most cases such people have nothing but selfish ambitions.

“‘Nigerians should look forward with confidence because God is in charge,” he said.

Rev. Okoh urged Nigerians to brace for the times ahead, especially as the nation prepares for general elections, noting that God would at the appropriate time manifest His authority.

On governance in the New Year, the primate urged the government at all levels to do everything to provide more jobs for the teeming population of unemployed youths.

“My advice to the government in the New Year is for it to provide more opportunities for employment; we want our young people to be more fruitful in 2014.

“The young people should have the opportunity to contribute to the development of our country.

“The improvement I want to see cuts across the different sectors because we need progress in virtually every sector of our economy,” he said.

The primate called on trade unions that had plans to embark on industrial actions in the New Year to try to resolve their disputes through dialogue rather than embark on strike.

He appealed to union leaders to put the nation’s interest above personal or sectional interest and urged the Federal Government to listen to the unionists as they seek to improve the conditions of service of their members.

Rev. Okoh appealed to both employers and employees to do their best to ensure that the country experienced industrial peace and harmony in 2014.

He said that a situation where workers and employers in the various sectors of the economy “are engaged in dispute, will not be helpful for the country’’.

The primate urged leaders across different spheres to teach their followers only those things that would be beneficial to the society.

He said that successes that would be recorded in 2014 would depend on the choices made by both the leaders and the followers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the service was attended by the clergy and Anglican faithful in the Abuja diocese.
