    • Demands issuance of certificate of return

The last has not been heard of the crisis in Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a Senator from Anambra Central Senatorial Zone; Annie Okonkwo has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him a certificate of return.

Okonkwo’s request is hinged on a recent Supreme Court’s judgment, where it upheld the legitimacy of the Ejike Oguebego-led executive of the PDP in the state. Okonkwo’s name was on the list of candidates submitted to INEC by the Ejike Oguebego-led Executive, but was later dropped based on a Court of Appeal Judgment.

Although the Court of Appeal, in a recent decision, nullified election of Anambra Central and ordered a rerun, Okonkwo is of the view that such rerun was unnecessary.

Okonkwo, in a letter written by his lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), to the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, argued that the right decision for INEC to take was to issue him with certificate of return in respect of Anambra Central Senatorial zone and not ‎to conduct a re-run election.

Okonkwo said ‎the effect of the Supreme Court judgment consequently was that all those who were not part of the List of Candidates produced by the congress/primary elections that the Ejike Oguebego and his Executive Committee participated in, and monitored by INEC ought and must vacate the positions they presently occupy having not been validly nominated.

“We hereby reiterate our demand in our earlier letter to you that our client Senator Clement Annie Okonkwo be issued with Certificate of return in respect of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone. Anything short of this is unacceptable,” the letter reads.

Part of the letter dated February 3, 2016‎ reads, “By the decision of the Supreme Court in SC.37/2015 allowing the appeal and setting aside the decision of the Court of Appeal, parties are back to status quo which is the point where the names of successful candidates had been published by INEC including that of Senator Clement Annie Okonkwo of PDP for Anambra Central Zone.

“This was as at 13th January 2015 being the last date for INEC publication of list of nominated candidates for National Assembly (see INEC time table attached as annexure 2). See also section 34 of Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

“His name and that of other successful candidates of PDP were uploaded in INEC website in compliance with the Federal High Court Order. It will be noticed that your commission indicated that our client’s name was published pursuant to ‘court order’‎.

“However when on 6th February 2015, the Court of Appeal set aside the said judgment of the Federal High Court, your Commission quickly removed the name of our client from the publication as candidate and replaced same with other name, Uche Lilian  Ekwunife who was subsequently issued with Certificate of Return by your Commission after the election.

“It is pertinent to note that when your Commission removed our client’s name, there was no Consequential Court Order made by the Court of Appeal to that effect, but your Commission relied on the necessary implication of the judgment of the Court of Appeal.‎”

Incidentally, INEC on February 3, published an advertorial in which it included Anambra Central Senatorial zone among the re-run elections fixed for 5th March 2016.

Okonkwo said he was one of the beneficiaries of the Supreme Court judgment in Appeal No. SC. 37/2015 and should be allowed to enjoy the benefit of that judgment.

He reminded INEC that his name was the number one on the valid list of Anambra State’s candidates for election into the National Assembly.

He exhibited a copy of the list in the letter to the commission.

According to him, he is a product of the only validly held primary election conducted by the PDP to produce their candidate and the only primary election monitored by INEC.

He also drew the commission’s attention to the decision of the Court of Appeal Enugu Division in Appeal No. CA/E/EPT/28/2015 which is an election appeal between Chief (Sir) Victor Umeh & Anr Vs INEC, Uche Ekwunife & Ors.

Okonkwo contended that Ekwunife’s disqualification was personal to her and not to the PDP and that since PDP won the election and he been the validly nominated candidate should be issued with the certificate of return.

Okonkwo to Igbo delegates: align with Ohaneze on confab

The president of Committee 21, an Igbo socio-political group, Senator Annie Okonkwo, has urged Igbo to support the Ohaneze Ndigbo’s position on the National Conference.

Okonkwo, in a statement yesterday by his media aide, Collins Ugwu, said: “Any opportunity for a national jaw-jaw of this dimension is better than war-war. The potency to correct structural and social injustices is best served through dialogue than the violence of warfare. People must appreciate that it is better late than never.

“I call on Ndigbo of all persuasions to strategically stand behind Ohaneze Ndigbo as our delegates go to the conference to canvass our position and interests, because the Igbo must make a statement that on this very issue of national dialogue, we are one, since the consequences of our collective deprivations as a people is neither discriminatory nor selective.”

He advised Igbo delegates to the conference: “It will be a lamentable self-inflicted disaster, difficult to forgive, much less forget if the policies and protocols of governance that will shape the future of this country are negotiated without the best of our deepest inputs from our cerebral fountain of knowledge, wisdom and prized attributes.

“It is therefore of solemn importance that our unvanished reflections, desires and demands are skillfully orchestrated, persuasively canvassed and convincingly articulated with no room for self opportunism or vain grandstanding, because our delegates should never make the mistake of coming home with analogue rating when we clearly have a digital capacity.

That is why we should go to the confab with competence and character, to optimize our confidence and capacity to seal a fair deal for Ndigbo who certainly will not accept anything less.”

Anambra: Ngige, three others battle for APC ticket

The newly registered All Progressives Congress has continued to grow in lips and bounds in Anambra State, as preparations for November 16 governorship election in the state gather momentum.

Already, four candidates are now battling for the party’s governorship ticket, especially from the Central and South Senatorial Zones in the state.

Those vying for the position are – the former governor of Anambra State, now a Senator representing Central Senatorial Zone, Dr. Chris Ngige, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo (a philanthropist), the Deputy National Chairman of (APC) (South), Senator Annie Okonkwo and Hygers Igwebuike.

However, members of the party in the state are calling for free and fair primaries to give aspirants a level playing field.

They contended that it would be proper to give any aspirant irrespective of his zone the chance to grab the party’s ticket since those already at the helm of affairs are from the central.

    A Senator’s wife at 50

Senator Annie Okonkwo’s wife, Chinyelu, turned 50 on May 26. A thanksgiving service was held at the Church of Assumption Catholic Church, Falomo, Lagos. NNEKA NWANERI writes.

What was to be a birthday party for the wife of Anambra State Senator Annie Okonkwo, Chinyelu, turned out to be a political gathering of sorts.

Her husband’s political associates came in large number to share in the joy of her 50th birthday in Lagos.

She went to the Church of Assumption, Falomo, Lagos, for a thanksgiving.

The reception was held at the Okonkwo’s Ikoyi home, a stone’s throw from the church.

A classic tent was aesthetically placed in the large garden behind the house.Fresh white roses and lily lined the walkway.

A white rug replaced the traditional red carpet. Green silky curtains shielded guests from the sun. Dangling crystal lightings dropped from the roof of the tent. In the middle of every table were flowers, cutlery and glass cups of various sizes and shapes.

The event planners, Shasha, led by their Chief Executive, Chizoba Omeakachie, and her bevy of beautiful ushers, ensured orderliness.

It was a gathering of ‘who is who’ among Igbo politicians. Fashion, class, style, beauty, elegance were showcased. Guests didn’t disappoint in their dressing; they were simply stunning.

Some northern senators were there, too. Many of the men were in suits. Some women, were in native attires and head gears, others wore gowns with matching feathered net hats.

With exotic choice wines and sumptuous delicacies, guests were treated to a buffet of local and continental dishes.

Chris Mba and the Bisi Band entertained guests. The repertoire of music comprised oldies and the new school.

Okonkwo led his wife to the floor for a romantic slow dance. Alone on the dance floor, they moved left and right, holding each other close as they set the tempo with Lionel Richie’s Endless Love. It was like a nuptial dance. Okonkwo shooed away those who came to spray them money. Looking regal in a floor length golden gown, Mrs Okonkwo planted kisses on her husband.

Soon after, accolades began pouring in for the mother of six. Many spoke glowingly of her. ‘Ugoagwu’, as she is fondly called by her friends and family members, was described as the umbrella that covers her husband.

Mrs Ruth Iwunze, a close friend of the celebrator, described her as a woman of humble character, whose unassuming nature doesn’t tell of her affluence.

“She is down to earth and a prayerful person and has kept in touch with even her primary school mates,” she said.

Dr Maureen Oniya, a university mate of Mrs Oknonwo, said during her days in school, she was studious and God-fearing, compassionate and humble.

“An inspiring love is what she has and never looks down on anyone,” she said.

Her elder brother, Nonso Onwamaegbu and younger sister, Nkem Onyekwuluijie, also eulogised their sibling. The nine-year-old son of the celebrator, Somto, spoke of his mother’s favourite soup – Ogbono; favourite colours – black/white; role models – Diana Ross and Oprah Winfrey and best musician Diana Ross.

Another son, Uche, a spilitting image of his father, praised his mother for being a style icon. Thanking her for all she has done for the family, he hoped she would be around in years to come to witness all the greater things he will do in future.

Nkemamaka, the Okonkwo’s first child and only daughter, said many good things about her mother.

“She doesn’t look 50; everyday, she looks younger wearing a long hair and high heels. Though I am 23 years, she is more fashionable than I am. I admire her a lot. She is my role model,” Nkemamaka said.

At this point, she broke down in tears and someone gave her a handkerchief to wipe her face.

“She is the pillar and strength of the family and I admire her humility and devotion to us and dad. She is truly my inspiration and I am so proud to call her my mum,” Nkemamaka added. When she finished her speech, she got a resounding applause

The cutting of the cake was delayed for the day to get dark. Fireworks were lit by the cake and 100 more colourfully erupted in the skies. Intermittently, they exploded, leaving many to wonder at the beauty of the scenery.

At the event were Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha; Senator Chris Ngige; Chairman of Zinox Computer Leo Stan Ekeh; Group Chairman of Chisco Transport Chief Chidi Anyaegbu; Senator Mike Ajaegbu; Dr Tunde Sholeye; Lagos State Commissioner for Budget and Planning Ben Akabueze; General Officer Command 81 Division, Maj.-Gen Obi Omahi; Fidelis Oditah (SAN); former Managing Director of United Bank of Africa (UBA) Tony Elumelu and his wife Awele; Enterprise Bank Managing Director Mr Richard Main; Nollywood acts Chidi Muokeme and Osita Iheme; wife of the former military governor of Lagos Ndubisi Kanu Gladys, and Ausbeth Ajagu.
