  • Olanipekun awards 206 scholarships at 20th anniversary

Olanipekun awards 206 scholarships at 20th anniversary

Two hundred and six beneficiaries comprising secondary school pupils, undergraduates, as well as Nigerian Law School students all smiled home with cheques they received from their benefactor, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), for their education.

The beneficiaries who were joined by their parents and well wishers at Olanipekun’s residence in Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State, expressed appreciation to the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for keeping alive their hopes of becoming great in the future.

The event also served to mark the 20th anniversary of the Wole Olanipekun Scholarship Scheme (WOSS), which the legal icon began in 1996 to assist brilliant but indigent students.

Initially, WOSS was set up to assist students of Ikere Ekiti origin. However, as it grew, the Board of Trustees saw then need to extend it to beneficiaries beyond Ikere and other states of the federation.

WOSS, led by Mr. S.S. Omoyeni a retired principal, was praised for its faithfulness, commitment and industry in managing the scheme for the past 20 years without being found wanting.

This year’s award was chaired by the vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka while the guest lecturer was Prof. Toyin Bamisaye of the Ekiti State University.

In his address Olayinka extolled Olanipekun’s virtues as a generous and selfless individual whose love for education was legendary given his investment of time, energy and money in the sector.

Olayinka said he was not surprised by Olanipekun, who also built a Vice Chancellor’s Lodge at the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo where he (Olanipekun) is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council.

Also speaking, the monarch of Ikere Ekiti, Ogoga Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado, urged the beneficiaries to justify the sponsor’s investment in them to encourage him to do more.

He shared how five of his classmates in primary school who were very brilliant could not continue their education because of lack of funds, while he (Oba Alagbado) had to stay at home for five years before proceeding to secondary school for the same reason.

Ekiti deputy governor, Dr Kolapo Olusola said Olanipekun’s gesture was a challenge to himself and other Ikere indigenes to develop the town.

Going down memory lane, Olanipekun, said the scheme, which started small in 1996 now has a national outlook as students from other states also benefit.

The former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in the old Ondo State, said he was celebrating 20 years of the scheme by distributing five exercise books to each primary school pupil in Ikere.

Olanipekun said: “Ikere presently has 77 professors but the question is how we produce more professors, more deputy governors, more governors and presidents? It is through investment in education.

“I want to appeal most profoundly to the beneficiaries of today that when you grow, look back to the less privileged and assist them. I appeal to you because government cannot do it all.

“The greatest thing you can be remembered for is not the wealth you accumulate but the lives you touch.”

Other dignitaries at the event were: former Ekiti Deputy Governor, Chief Abiodun Aluko; Commissioner for Education, Mr Olajide Egunjobi; Chairman, Ikere Local Government, Mr. Ola Alonge; House of Assembly member representing Ikere Constituency 1, Mr. Wale Ayeni and traditional chiefs of Ikere.

  • Ayodele marks 20th anniversary

    Ayodele marks 20th anniversary

When in 1996, Dr Isaac Ayodele, a traditional medicine practitioner, was advised by his clients to persist and not despise his small beginning; it sounded rather out of place for him.

Why?  The perception people had for the practice then. Traditional medicine was being perceived as being synonymous with charms (juju).

Today, his outfit, Diafra Ayodele Herbals, is 20 years  and has become a popular brand for natural health and alternative medicine lovers.

Under the auspices of Ayodele Slimmers and Naturopathic Clinic and Africa Herbals, the organisation has grown from one brand to another, becoming a trade mark, Diafa AYODELE HERBALS . Its activities include, but are not limited to Ayodele Herbal Farms, Ayodele Health Products and Ayodele Public Health Clinic/Resort.

Dr Ayodele said: “The aim is yet to be achieved. I am attempting to revolutionise the concept of herbal medicine, which hitherto was regarded as fetish, unhygienic and primitive. My organisation has campaigned vehemently for a new information order that aims at placing herbal medicine in its proper perspective in Africa and beyond.”

He said in 20 years, Ayodele has transformed the concept of herbal products, herbal farm and herbal health care.

“A great brand like allopathic medicine that can be used with pride by all races, religion, sex, nations and socio economic strata has been refined. This year marks 20 years of my touching lives with natural healing,” said Dr Ayodele.

The organisation has so far developed three strong arms in its 20 years of existence: Ayodele Herbal Farms; Ayodele herbal products; and Ayodele Clinic/Resort.

According to him, Ayodele farm  cultivates medicinal herbs for use in the factory where his brand  herbal products are manufactured. “The farm also cultivates medicinal plants and makes it available to the teeming population, who find it difficult to source the herbs. Ayodele Herbal Farm cultivates both foreign and local herbs to improve the health and wellbeing of its numerous clients at home and abroad,” he said.

Dr Ayodele added: ‘’Another reason for the establishment of the Ayodele Herbal Farm was to enhance further standardisation and the hygiene of its products. Hence it cultivates in a very clean environment, and uses organic manure instead of the obnoxious fertiliser.”

The Ayodele Herbal products is the manufacturing arm of the organisation. It has an office, a dressing room, a mini warehouse for raw materials, production and packaging room, as well as mini warehouse for finished products.

He said many factors stand the herbal products from the rest.

According to him, organic medicinal plants from his farms are used in the production of the herbal products. This guarantees safety, standardisation and hygiene of the products.

It has eight best selling herbal products certified by the Nigerian drug regulation agency known as National Food and Drug Agency and Control (NAFDAC). “I am also developing 20 more products through this herbal farm in conjunction with the public health/herbal clinic,” he said.

He continued: “As a seasoned practitioner with “my backgroung in Public Health Science and obtaining a Doctorate Degree in the same, I ensure that the products are formulated and produced by professionals in herbal medicine, pharmacologists. My outfit engages in regular clinical trials of products to ensure their efficacy.”

In his 20-year practice, Dr Ayodele has written more than 25 books, including the bestselling ‘’When the doctor is away’’.

Ayodele Clinic is the centre for clinical trials of Ayodele Herbal products. The clinic is also for public health. It is an integrative medical centre, attending to the health needs of individuals and devising various ways of improving the health of the larger population.

The Ayodele Clinic has also provided a platform to attest to the efficacy of the various medicinal plants harvested from Ayodele Herbal Farms. It does free medical check ups and gets assistance from DIAFA NGO to give some patients, who are less priviledged free medical treatments.

In addition to all these, the Clinic has Guest Suites for patients or clients who have to stay for days  for  treatments, natural healing and wellbeing. This has led myriads to the resort-clinic and they recovered from various ailments.

Sharing his vision and objective for more years to come, Dr Ayodele said he wanted to be one of the best herbal products manufacturers in the universe.

“To commit resources, creativity and expertise to deliver health and wellbeing to all, with high integrity. I had a dream that one day there would be a hospital for both the rich and the poor, those who could not afford the high cost of medical bills and those who could not even afford to eat a meal per day, not to talk of affording medical bill,” he said.

Indeed many who live below poverty line are dead due to their inability to provide basic medical bill. All the hospitals are basically set up to cure the sick. This is fine. How about prevention, which we all agree is better than cure. Even the fathers of modern medicine opine that your food should be your medicine, and your medicine should be your food.

In view of this, when Ayodele Clinic  project commenced in 1996, we projected to think outside the box in the bid to reach out to the myriads of less privileged patients who die in droves unheralded.

  • Gombe celebrates 20th anniversary

    Gombe celebrates 20th anniversary

The festivity lasted a week with celebrities in attendance. But when Gombe State Deputy Governor and chairman of the 20th anniversary committee Dr. Charles Iliya spoke at the gala and award night marking the end of the merriment, he seemed to have felt the need to explain the elaborate celebration.

“We have reason to celebrate,” he said, “because our state has impacted tremendously and it needed to show the world its  achievements. Today, the state can boast of a state university, state polytechnic, state college of education, training and rehabilitation of youths. The construction of road networks across the state and airport has greatly improved accessibility and mobility.”

Iliya urged the citizens to love one another as no meaningful development can be achieved without peace, adding that Gombe was among the fastest developing of the states created in 1996.

Elder statesman Maitama Sule who presented a lecture titled ‘Restructuring Nigeria: Implications for national unity and integration’, also had a message of peace, hope, and unity.

He said, “Thank goodness that you have Governor [Ibrahim] Dankwambo, thank goodness that you have a young Emir, thank goodness that the previous leaders have done their best and I hope and pray that you will cooperate with the administration in order to realise the potential greatness of this great area.

The elder statesman disagreed with those agitating for a restructuring of the country. Instead, he advocated for a bloodless revolution as the panacea to the country’s present predicament.

“We have problems in this country today, but we will overcome. The people that will enable us to overcome are you (the masses), the youths.

“I am not calling for a bloody revolution; I am calling for a bloodless revolution. We need re-orientation; change your minds and we can do it.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo urged Nigerians to hold on to the message of hope, optimism and unity preached by Maitama Sule, saying they would lead the country far into actualising its goals.

Alhaji AtikuAbubakar disagreed with Maitama Sule’s view, arguing that the country needed to be restructured for its greatness and potentials to be truly realised.

Governor Dankwambo described the road to statehood as long, rough and complicated, which the people conquered because they were united. He itemised the programmes and projects executed by all five administrations in the state from the era of the pioneer administrator Group Captain Joseph Orji (Retd) till date, saying there was every need to celebrate and left to the people to judge whether the state had actualised the yearnings and aspirations of the Gombe’s founding fathers.

Group Captain Joseph Orji who went round the state on a tour to see facilities and structures put in place by the state government, said the state has achieved a lot over a short period of time and therefore has every reason to celebrate.

“In the Southeast, we are very well known; same anywhere we have our presence. We have wiped many tears, fed the poor and are still feeding them, given shelter to those in need and even secured legal services to those in core need of them, so that they don’t suffer for what they didn’t  do. Truly, there is need to thank God. But I must confess the journey has not all that been easy, but with sheer dedication and determination, and the glory of God Almighty in us, we have played laudable roles in the society. I want others out there to do likewise.”
