THE Lagos State Women Council of the Ansar Ud Deen society at the weekend organised its annual health walk in Lagos.

Apart from walking, members sang, danced and networked with other members of the public who were excited with the messages from the women dressed in white and green outfits.

On the objectives of the walk, the state coordinator of the council, Princess Ramat Olayinka Ola, said, “It is important to create awareness about women’s health and help to bring about the positive changes necessary to bring about a healthy living. We need to be conscious about all the cholesterol that we consume, as well as understand the benefits of healthy living.”

  • Ansar-Ud-Deen School celebrates pioneer headteacher

Old students of Ansar-Ud-Deen High School, Surulere, Lagos have joined the school authorities and other well- wishers to felicitate with the pioneer principal of the school, Alhaji Shukrullah Selem’s and his family on his 80th birthday.

The event, which held on the school premises and was attended by dignitaries and old students, also featured the launch of his biography.

President, Ansar-Ud-Deen High School Old Students Association, (AHOSA) Mr Wasiu Onibon, said Selem, fondly called Alhaji, is a man with tremendous passion for hard work, discipline, integrity, honesty, and the fear of God in him.

He added that the school’s story would be incomplete without Salem.

“It is an indisputable fact that during this period, Baba spent his youthful life in the school, moulding, building and nurturing pupils of integrity and honour, who today have demonstrated expertise in different fields of human endeavours,” he said.

Selem, who once served as the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Schools Management Board, was so happy that he laughed, instead of answering many of the questions asked by this reporter.

“If you lived the kind of life you love to live and God made it possible for you, you should be happy and contended,” he said.

Asked to compare today’s education with his time, Selem said teachers’ welfare was poor back then compared to now.

“In my time,, teachers were at the bottom of the ladder. The same cannot be said of today because I understand that they now appoint them as permanent secretaries – even from the classroom. This is an achievement. Teachers are now recognised and, for them to justify that recognition, they must work hard,” he said.

Commissioner for Education Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, who also spoke at the event, said Salem is one of the good things that happened to education in the state.

The commissioner, who was represented by the Director, Higher Education District, Sulaimon Ajayi, said: “I have known Alhaji Salem during my days, though I didn’t attend this school. I attended Ikeja Grammar School. I heard of Selem when I was even appointed by government. I knew about the hard work he was noted for. I know that he is a mentor.”

Ansar-Ud-Deen cautions govt, ASUU on strike

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were yesterday advised to trust each other to resolve their differences over the five-month-old strike of the university teachers.

The national president of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Alhaji Femi Okunnu (SAN), gave the advice in Lagos when he addressed reporters on the 90th anniversary of the society.

The former Federal Commissioner for Works noted that it was a pity the strike was allowed to continue for six months.

He described the situation as a bad omen for the nation’s education system.

Okunnu urged both parties to return to the negotiation table for proper dialogue to save the future of the country from calamity.

He said: “From my own point of view, it is a pity that the strike has taken this long. I recognise the right of any union to employ any legal action to fight for its cause. I would have preferred ASUU showed its seriousness about the cause it is pursuing by embarking on a strike that will not last this long. As it is now, it is the common man that is suffering from their disagreement…”

  • Ansar-ud-deen leader lauds Aregbesola

THE National Chief Missioner, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdurrahman Hamad, has applauded Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s demonstration of justice in the handling of public affairs.

Hammad said all policies of the current administration go a long way to show how equitable distribution of wealth, justice and fairplay in all matters are solutions to the many crises bedevilling Nigeria.

These were the kernels of the Friday sermon delivered by Hammad at the Ansar-ud-Deen Central Mosque, Osogbo.

Sheikh Hamad said justice is the foundation upon which the heaven and earth were created and as such Allah commanded Muslims to do justice and be equitable in the process of giving people their rights.

The cleric observed that justice has two wings, comprising one who is to do justice and one to whom justice is to be done.

He noted that justice is so important among mankind that Allah has prohibited his creatures to refrain from injustice in all its forms.

Stating that leaders like Aregbesola are rare, the missioner said the governor should be commended and supported in what whatever programmes and polices of his administration.

He averred that good governance, like Aregbesola is doing, means giving various people and groups what rightly belong to them.

According to him: “The people of Osun State are lucky to have the kind of government they now have.

“You must therefore thank Allah for His mercy on you; be steadfast and grateful to Aregbesola’s government and what he is doing.”

He thanked the governor for declaring the Hijra holiday, which he said is part of the constitutional rights of every Muslim in the country.

He said Islam is a religion of peace and Muslims must be the best example of peace- lovers and peace-makers.

Aregbesola said Islam permits Muslims to uphold justice even if it is against them and enjoins them to be equitable in distribution of collective wealth.
