  • Road crashes claim 32 lives in Edo – FRSC

    The Edo Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) says it recorded 32 deaths in road crashes across the state between July and September.

    The Sector Commander, Mr Anthony Oko, made the disclosure on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin.

    Oko said that the the figure comprised 28 males and four females resulted from the 50 road crashes recorded within the period under review.

    According to him, 16 of the 50 cases fatal, 32 serious while two were minor cases.

    He also said that 147 persons were reportedly injured in the crashes that involved 481 persons, adding that the total casualties recorded within the period was 179.

    The sector commander further told NAN that speed violation, brake failure, mechanical deficiency and loss of control topped the causes of the crashes within the period.

    Oko advised motorists to always drive within approved speed limit and also ensure that their vehicles were road worthy.

    He also advised against unnecessary and dangerous overtaking and excessive speed that could lead to loss of control.

    He further advised parents against allowing their teenage and young children without driving experience and licence to drive.

    He noted that such actions exposed the children to dangers on the road.

  • 50% of road crashes due to drivers’ poor sight – FRSC

    Mr Anthony Oko, the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) says 50 per cent of the road crashes in the country are due to poor sights of drivers.

    Oko made the assertion during a sensitization programme and free eye test organised in Benin by the command, in collaboration with the Optometrists Association of Nigeria, Edo chapter.

    He said that because of this drivers needed to check their sights regularly, adding “to prevent accidents, we need to do eye tests,” he said.

    He said that the essence of the programme was to enhance accurate driving and prevent accidents on the road.

    He said road crashes were caused by human, mechanical and weather errors, stressing that the human element usually led to colossal loses.

    “Not everybody knows how to drive under the rain,” he added.

    In his remarks, Dr Onoriode Ateka, Secretary, Optometric Association of Nigeria, Edo chapter, said it had been observed that most road accidents were as a result of unclear vision of drivers.

    Ateka said there was the need to educate drivers on the importance of sight to guarantee safety on the road.

    He said that during the exercise, eye glasses would be recommended for those who needed them while those who would need treatment would be advised accordingly.

    He therefore advised drivers to endeavour to go for eye checks as least once in a year to update their vision.

    Some of the beneficiaries of programme, commended the organisers because it had enabled them to seek solution to their eye problems in order to avoid accidents on the road.

  • 85 killed in Edo auto accidents – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo said no fewer than 85 deaths were recorded in 117 road traffic accidents in the state in the past six months.

    The FRSC state Sector Commander in the state, Mr Anthony Oko, who made the disclosure to the News men on Monday in Benin, said accidents occurred from January to June.

    Oko said the figure indicated an increase when compared with  57 deaths recorded in 124 crashes within the same period in 2017.

    He said that from January to June this year, 41 of the crashes recorded were fatal, with 541 persons injured, as against 20 fatal accidents and 366 persons injured the same period in 2017.

    The sector commander said that January recorded the highest number of crashes during the period under review, while in 2017 January, February and April accounted for the highest occurrences due to mass movement.

    Oko said that Speed Violation (SPV) topped the major causes of mishaps in the state, followed by Brake Failure (BFL) and Mechanical Deficiency (MDV) .

    He advised motorists to drive within approved speed limit and also ensure that their vehicles were road-worthy.

    He also warned them against dangerous overtaking that could lead to loss of control, especially during heavy down pour “when the roads are wet and slippery and cannot hold tyres of vehicles.’’

  • FRSC records 42 deaths from 27 road mishaps in Osun

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC says 42 lives were lost in 27 road accidents that occurred in Osun State in March.
    The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Anthony Oko, made this known in Osogbo on Monday.
    Oko said that the accidents, which were recorded in different locations in the state, involved 198 persons, out of which 101 victims sustained various degrees of injuries, while others were unhurt.
    He said that most of the accidents were due to speeding, poor condition of the roads and sometimes failure by motorists to comply with road traffic rules and regulations.
    The official, who blamed the accidents on human errors, recklessness and impatience on the part of drivers, advised motorists to always operate within the road safety guidelines while driving.
    Oko said, however, that the commission issued 1,273 driver’s license to motorists in the month under review, while 173 traffic offenders were educated after they were apprehended.
    He warned that the commission continues to apprehend drivers without valid drivers’ licence.
    According to him, FRSC personnel had been directed to work round-the-clock to apprehend and prosecute traffic offenders to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property on the roads.

  • FRSC to prosecute drivers without valid licence in Osun

    The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ), Osun Command, says it will start prosecuting drivers without valid driver’s licence and  expired licence on April 1.

    Mr Anthony Oko, the Sector Commander, disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting on Tuesday in Osogbo.

    Oko said the command had created enough awareness on the need for drivers to procure genuine driver’s licence and not to drive without a valid licence.

    “Any driver caught driving without a licence is regarded as a monster and a killer.

    “A driver without a licence is even endangering the lives of people when they drive a vehicle, because to be a driver, you have to go to a driving school, where you are trained and issued a certificate.

    “Any driver that is driving without a licence and gets involved in an accident would be treated as a murderer,” he said

    The sector commander also stressed the importance of going to a certified driving school for a driver’s licence and a refresher course for old drivers.

    He cautioned drivers against obtaining fake driver’s licence, adding that fake driver’s licence was difficult to differentiate from the original.

    He said that any driver’s licence obtained without the applicant physically going to FRSC for capturing and Bio-metrics was fake.

    Oko advised drivers to visit FRSC website on www.frsc.gov.ng to verify the authenticity of their drivers licence or send a text “NDLEA status” space driver’s licence number to 33811.
