  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in Change era (8)

TOMORROW IS D-DAY, when President Ebele Azikwe Jonathan should pass power to president– elect Gen Mohammadu Buhari (rtd). The hearts of many people, including Gen, Buhari’s must be pounding harder and faster as this column speculated last Thursday. At under 110/70, mine isn’t. As a matter of fact, I will not witness Gen. Buhari’s inauguration on radio and television, and I will miss the Trafalgar square–type assembly which my acquaintance, Alhaji Jide Tairu director at Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, has arranged for that day at our housing estate to commemorate the inauguration. I will be in Lagos alright, but out of circulation, cut off from radio and television and merry-making of all sorts. For tomorrow is May 29 one of the important dates in my calendar since 1977 which presages a three–day observance of PENTECOST.

Christians know of Pentecost as the season of the ascension of the crucified but risen Christ. It is celebrated worldwide in Christiandom 40 days after Easter Monday, which reminds them of the teaching of early Christian fathers that the Lord Jesus physically arose from the dead on that day. There are many Christians who do not share this belief down the line. While they believe the Lord survived physical death, they see this more in terms of his soul or ethereal body and have explanations for the whereabouts of his physical earthly remains. Even Apostle Paul would note the body of the Lord he encountered was not the mortal earthly cloak of his essence.

Well, this is not the issue now. Since 1977, I have been priviledged to partake of the recognition and observance of Pentecost over three days beginning from tomorrow. I crave your indulgence to mention, briefly this event because the date coincides, somewhat, with the date chosen, for whatever reason(s), to inaugurate a new Nigerian Federal Government, and because Gen. Buhari’s election, unique at this time of Nigeria’s history, positions his inauguration as president for tomorrow.

Many Christians remember that Temple in paradise where 24 Elders unceasingly sing Holy, Holy, Holy, God Almighty. From eternity to Eternity.

his temple is at the boundary of the Divine World or the World of Angels with paradise, the world of human spirits.    we humans are spirits from the spiritual world or World of spirit, which lies below the world of Angels in the divine world. At the summit of the spiritual world there is a semblance, though in spiritual content, of the temple of the elders in the Divine world. It is this Temple which bore a part of the light of God when God issued the creation fiat or order…” LET THERE BE LIGHT” PRIOR TO THIS ORDER EXISTENCE BEGAN WITH Him the creator and ended with the Elders. Below the realms of the Elders, a dark, cold void existed. The order brought a part of the light of God from out of Him to the boundary of the world of the Elders and of the void. That part of the light of God immediately brought light, heat and warmth to the void to give it life, and we are informed that “the spirit of God hovered over the land.” This was the creation of paradise, after which was to evolve subsequent creation which developed, through the Big bang  scenarios described by science, after the prototype or archetype of the original creation. It is the beings in this original creation that were made after the “Image of God”, not the imperfect human beings on earth who are still struggling consciously or unconsciously, to achieve immortality. In the Temple at the summit of paradise, the world of perfected and evolved human spirits like you and me striving to become images of the images of God, there is a king. He is that part of the light of God, that is, He is a part of God, who brought creation into being and anchored God’s law within it. In this Temple, His Essence or being is cloaked in the finest spirit material, hence this Name of Holy spirit. For God and God alone is Holy. The Lord Jesus referred to Him when He said… “And when he, the spirit of Truth is come…” It is of Him that the Lord Jesus also referred when He said any sin against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. For, as the Creative will of God the father, the Holy Spirit brought Creation into being under the Laws of God, anchored these laws in creation, has the responsibility for the smooth–running of creation, including the redress of any imbalance or injustice throw what we call the Law of Karma or of sowing and Reaping and, Finally, responsibility for the final Judgement. The Lord Jesus advises us that … when He the Spirit of Truth comes, He will reprieve the world of sin and proclaim the judgment” The book of Revelation in the Bible announces Him as … “ that which was, which is and which is to come…” (For the Judgement, the next verse announces greetings also from the risen and departed Lord Jesus and describe him as the “faithful witness”). This, two personalities are spoken of… that which is to come”, and “the faithful witness”. It’s goes on to describe Jesus as “the first begotten of the Death” which I understand to mean to mean the first son of God to live on earth with a spirituality dead humanity. Thus the Holy spirit as the will and power of God who is to come is the second son of God.

As part of His responsibility for the maintenance of Creation, which He brought into existence, there is an outpouring of power from the Holy Spirit into Creation once, in what we observe on earth every year at a definite time those human Spirits whose inner or Spirit eyes are sufficiently sensitive to see the paleness or dullness of the earth when it is running out of this power, like an anemic person in need of blood transfusion, the peak of the receipt of this power has been determined to be between May 29 and May 31. This outpouring is like the surge of blood from the heart to all parts of the body to maintain them. The heart beats about 72 times a minute, but the outpouring takes place once a year. The scenario should flood us with humility; it should teach us that, as there is only one God, there is only One Law and one power. This law operates throughout creation in the same way: creation is maintained or the human body is maintained.

Revelation 1:4-6 describe the Holy Spirit as “that which was, which is and which is to come” and the Lord Jesus as “the faithful witness.” Being from the same origin as the Holy Spirit, Jesus would know of the timing of the outpouring of power from the Holy Spirit, He would delay His ascent homewards to the father and instruct His Disciples to gather in the upper chamber to witness this event. Hitherto, He alone would have it, it was possible that was what happened at the Transfiguration been observing it. Please recall that He once said He had many things He would have loved to teach them, but they were not yet mature for the information. Their grief over, His crucification which purged their souls of anything else most probably opened them up that “special“ Pentecost to receive power as It descended from high and perform the wonders ascribed to them at that Pentecost.

hristians would need to purge themselves of some errors connected with Pentecost. One: Pentecost or the outpouring of power was not a one–off event limited to the disciples alone. Two: They do not have the holy spirit in them but probably have in them power from the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit is personal like Jesus and is not merely the rush of wind.

Three, it is given to not only Christians to partake of Pentecost. God did not create religions. Man fashioned religions from out of the Messages He sent to different parts of the earth, on the basis of what spiritual knowledge they needed to have in order that they may ascend the next rung of the ladder of life on their homeward journey to paradise. Had these messages been left as pure as they were brought and joined in ascending order, they would have form a single ladder to the pedestal of Truth, to God. The power of Pentecost is impersonal. It works for every soul opened to it in the degree of the absorbent capacity of that soul.

It transforms from slumber of “winter” to spring what we call Nature, the hills and the mountains, the meadows, fields and the forests, the oceans and the seas. These things are not Nature but the effects or work of Nature. Nature comprise all the Nature beings who stand unswerving in the Will of God to fulfill His Command for the Creation of a home in different parts of developed or Subsequent Creation for the maturing of the human spirit who could not mature in the Original Paradise because that was too close to the proximity of the Power of God.

Four we used the Power of Pentecost according to our nature, to ennoble ourselves or our environment, or to burden ourselves with more guilt spiritually and, thereby, entangle ourselves and our societies for spiritual perdition. If society is stagnant, such as ours, whenever Creation is on the move, it is evidence that we are entangled. My prayer is that, as President, irrespective of his religion, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) would be sufficiently connected to the strengthening, guiding and helpful rays of the Power of Pentecost pouring forth from On high at his time, to fulfill the transformation of Nigeria to the honour and glory of the Almighty Creator AMEN. Thus, off I go, out of circulation at the time of the inauguration of the Buhari Administration tomorrow. Alhaji Jide Tairu and my other friends should now understand my absence at the inauguration of the Trafalgar Square–type Assembly. So should Mr George Ubeng, an avid reader of this column who, unsuccessfully, has been inviting me to a palatial pleasure garden turned to a health farm run by his wife. He believes I have no time for pleasure, that I am all work, work, work and more work. How wrong he can be. He shoudn’t soon be surprised about my plans to bring Jide Tairu‘’Trafalgar Square’’ to the ‘’gardens’’ in nearby Iju – Ishaga neighborhood of Lagos, and bring the ‘’gardens’’ to the Square.

    DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS

Let’s hurry back to familiar grounds. As president, Gen Buhari (rtd) cannot escape frequent air and road travel in and out of Nigeria. This week, he returned from a visit to Mr Tony Blair, British prime minister.

The western world is interested in Nigeria’s future. Under President Jonathan, foreign and home debts have climbed to a new Olympian height at about US60 billion dollars. There is nothing wrong with a debt if the money is judiciously spent on projects which regenerate repayments and post profits on top of it. Nigeria’s debts behave abnormally because they hardly bring anything back in return.

Traveling long hours by road, rail or air (I have no sea travel experience), the tendency is for some people to cross their tired legs, placing one foot on top of the other or, unknowingly, resting the fold of the knee against the seat. Resting the knee fold against the seat may compress a deep vein which runs under, disturb free flow of blood or even cause the blood to clot. Clots of blood detaching from this thrombos may lodge someday. Sometime, the carotid (heart) arteries, deprive the heart of sufficient blood supply for its work or even cause a heart attack. If the lodgement is in the brain, a stroke may occur. Clots in the blood vessels may cause swellings in the foot which may give rise to interonitent claudication,  a condition in leg when the sufferer experiences pain on walking even short distances.

Besides, clots may, give rise to phlebitis (inflammation of the walls of the veins). If you observe the hands and arms of many people, or even the legs, you may find the veins and other blood vessels so inflamed that they appear to want to leap out.

o dissolve clots, orthodox medicine relies on such pharmaceuticals as aspirin and waffarin. These could be dangerous for some people as they may cause lacerations in the stomach and intestine, thereby provoking stomach and intestinal bleeding. In alternative medicine, safer and effective remedies include serrapeptase, cayenne pepper, fish oil and Vitamin E to mention a few. Of Vitamin E, Judy Limberg Mcfarland, one of our tour guides in this series, says:  “Vitamin E also decreases the need for oxygen in the tissues and organs of the body. Mega Vitamin levels of Vitamin C and trace levels of Selenum also share this function. Additionally, Vitamin E improves the transportation of oxygen by the red blood cells… dissolves clots and prevents their formation in arteries and veins. It is useful in treating and preventing phlebitis ( inflammation of the walls of the vein). As a preventive measure against strokes, Vitamin E helps prevent arterial and venous thrombosis or clots in the circulatory system of the brain.”

Judy Mcfarland says Vitamin E also “restores capillary permeability, it helps dilate the capillaries and this helps  circulation of blood throughout the body”.

Judy Mcfarland adds: “A number of years ago, at a National Nutritional food Association convention, mother and I had the priviledge of hearing Dr. Nufrid Shute discuss his work with 38,000 candiac patients. During his lecture, he showed fantastic colour slides that I will never forget. Among them were pictures of patients with ulcerated amputated stubs, diabetic gangerine, terrible ulceration and severe burns, all of which refused to heal. But after natural Vitamin E, usually 600 ius daily, had been given to the patients, and Vitamin E ointment had been used, all the patients were restored. Ulcerated and naked wounds healed more rapidly with Vitamin E therapy, and the scar tissue did not contact and was not tender. Vitamin E was even shown to prevent disfiguring scars and to help heal old scar. Remember this, if you need a scar to heal after an operation.

YOUR HEART AND VITAMIN E  is the classic book: by Dr. Evein Shute.

Of cayenne, she says: “Cayenne is more than a hot spice. Like many herbs, cayenne pepper ( capsicum frudescuns) also known as capsicum, is used for medicinal as well as for culinary purposes. In recent years, more than 650 studies of capsaicin (the “hot “ property in cayenne pepper, have been published, including more than 100 clinical studies in human beings). Capsicum is excellent for equalising blood circulation, which helps to prevent strokes and heart attacks. It increases the heart action, effectively increasing circulation without increasing blood pressure.’’

On the information about Vitamin E shared by Judy McFarland, I would like to add that, in choosing a Vitamin E brand, the pack should be well inspected to ensure the product is the natural form of Vitamin E. The natural form is d-alpha tocopherol.  The inorganic form, sometimes made from petroleum sources, is dl tocopherol. The difference is between d and dl. There are mixed tocopherols, which contains all six or so variants of Vitamin E, and other  brands, with only one or a few variants. If you choose to try fish oil for clots, be mindful that there are varying grades of it and that the safer and more effective ones do not come cheap. Fish oil from fish in the Atlantic is less preferred, for example, to krill oil from krill fishin the Antarctic , which is unpolluted by heavy metals, while some producers take extra pains to purify their fish oil brand, some others do not and sell cheap. The secret of what goes on in the industry is shared in the classic book of Dr. Udo Erasmus, Fats that heal and fats that kill.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in Change era (7)

Every day, the average heart, your best friend, beats 100,000 times and pumps 2,000 gallons of blood for nourishing your body. In 70 years, that adds up to more than 360 million (faithful) heart beats.” Patricia Bragg in ‘The miracles of fasting’.

    QUOTATION

“To understand high blood pressure, you need to know a few interesting facts about the heart. The human heart beats an average 70 times per minute, 100,000 times a day and 2.5 billion times in a lifetime. With each heart beat, about 2.5 ounces of blood are pumped through the heart … that is 1,980 gallons every day..’, Judy Limberg Mcfarland in Aging without growing old.

MAY 29 is only seven days away. That is the D-DAY on which outgoing president Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan will hand power over to president elect Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd). Many hearts are pounding. Many people must feel their hearts agitating against their throats. The big thieves in public offices must be wishing the hands of the clock can still be turned backwards  and events would come up that will save them the pains or trauma of Buhari succeeding Jonathan. Buhari said a few weeks ago, after defeating Jonathan in the presidential election, that a major change will occur in Nigeria in June. No one as yet knows what change will come from this seemingly incorruptible man who has promised to sweep the dirty, foul-smelling  Aegean stables clean of dirt, grit and odour. In a country where many public officers are big-time thieves, as Senator–elect Ben Bruce said recently, an echo of the incumbent Emir of kano, Sanusi, when he was Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Buhari’s testimonials make us believe he can tidy up the financial and economic mess into which the Jonathan Administration over six years has plunged Nigeria. Here are  the records:

•Buhari has only two houses and about N1million in his bank accounts

•Buhari has been Governor of Borno State

•Buhari has been Nigeria’s oil minister two times, one as chairman of the presidential task force on petroleum.

    • Buhari has been head of State (President)

•Buhari  has held many Seniour military commands, one of which is enough to make a multi-billionaire of a big- thief incumbent

I cannot vouch for Nigerian figures. The word going round is that former Nigerian Presidents are on N24 million pension  a year and that retired Nigerian generals earn a pension upkeep of about N2.4 million a year. The rhyme of these figures almost makes me wish to doubt their veracity. Nevertheless, as we know, there is no smoke without a fire behind it. The story is that some retired generals who were former heads of state draw both pensions, but buhari accepted to draw only his general’s pension.

If we can trust these credentials to be true, we can expect major commotions in the polity and in the economy. That’s why I believe, from open talk and whispers throughout the country, some great events of our time are shaping up for manifestation. If you would recall one of the columns in the Jonathan, Buhari, the rich and the poor series, I almost gave the election to Jonathan after he postponed the polls for weeks and, in that period, literally hurled Nigeria’s treasury at the voters. I recalled then a spiritual code for understanding the time in which we stand, in this case…

As we march towards the end of time, belief in the power of money would reach its zenith or climax and many people will replace the Truth, that is God, with money.

n retrospect, we can now see that many voters, even in Lagos, fell for the President’s money. But, at that,  Jonathan Buhari column suggested, a Jonathan victory would guarantee no safety for the thieving Nigerian Establishment because, unknown to many people, we stand in the precints of a great purification of the earth from all Opposition to light and goodness. A great event occurred in Nigeria about 40 years ago to plug our country in the mainstream of the spiritual cleansing process. It was, therefore, a question of time before the leader would arrive whose aura  would link up with the ethereal forces at play and anchor them in the Government and other social  institutions. A Jonathan victory would not have hatched this march. The heat and the fire would merely have diverted their course to spring up elsewhere. Who can stop the flow of water? Even when you surround it with concrete, it would merely percolate into the soil to find a new level for its flow.

Our hearts are pounding now because we do not know what Buhari would do? Would he cut his own pay to, say, N5 million a month and ask senators to downgrade theirs to, say, N3 million. How would he tackle the mess in the oil and gas sector? Will he declare a State of Economy Emergency? How would he reform the Army and the Police? What about the Customs and Excise department and the immigration service? Will he wish to know how federal roads in a South-south state cost about N3 billion naira per kilometre in laterite terrain and less than half of that on the same terrain in a nearby state? Will he reverse all the appointments and other decisions of lame-duck President Jonathan intended to plant human land mines around him?

What of the US 500 million Oil and gas project at the Lekki EPZ in Lagos lame-duck President Jonathan has unilaterally ordered be taken to Bayelsa, his home state? Even if Buhari would like to stick to agreement with international power brokers not to probe Jonathan, for which reason he has promised to treat the outgoing President with “respect and understanding,” what would happen if private citizens file allegations against the Jonathan administration and, in the process of tackling them, the president’s name and involvement keep popping up? Our hearts are pounding, I keep saying. I have refused to be connected to municipal electricity supply for about 12 years running because the bill is outraging. With my children now on their own, I live alone. I run no electrical appliance, not even television or fridge, I leave home about 10 a.m and return about 11 p.m, have, my bath and go to  sleep. Why should I pay N 40,000 a month for electricity I do not consume simply because, from its size, the electricity–man believes the house should gulp that much every month. You can be sure that if I am a thief and can steal money to pay the bill this month, the bill will go up next month, electricity would not be regular, the process will go on and the owners of electricity will be smiling to the bank, raking in money from millions of people they do not deserve to earn and poisoning the economy as the cost of electricity is plastered on goods and services. Jonathan promised to deliver us all from this mafia, but failed. Will Buhari be man enough to look them straight in the eye and tackle them? Will he take electricity back from the mafia? He owns them nothing, the contributed billions of Naira into Jonathan’s election campaign fund, not his, which was funded by poor people and some rich friends.

    Buhari’s heart

Gen. Buhari’s heart, too, must be pounding. He would move the levers alright. And that will ignite a chain of events. But there is no man who moves a lever or who starts a process who can ever determine its dimensions or end. For these events soon don their own garbs modulated by other influences, and go their own way, far, far away from the originators imagination. Buhari must wonder if he can find the right people to do the job he wishes to accomplish. Was this why he suggested we should expect no miracles? Will there be moles in the house? What if Senators rebel and Governors hijack the government? If he cannot dislodge the mafias within three months will they not regroup and with new found confidence confront him? Does he recognise that when the lair of a poisonous snake is lifted, it will surely lift its head and attack the intruder unless it is killed outright. Buharis victory at the polls has exposed and lifted the lair of the poisonous snake which is now waiting for the opportune time to take its revenge.

    Pounding heart

The heart does not pound on its own. It pounds when we are afraid. Fear may be conscious or unconscious. Whatever it is, fear keeps us on our toes to make us survive the event(s) we are afraid of. What keeps us on our toes to fight the fear causing event or to flee from it are stress hormones which are poured into the blood stream by adrenal glands, the anti-stress glands located on top of each Kidney. When we are afraid of anything or situation.

These hormones are double-edged swords. They enhance our survival in dreadful situations. But they may also harm our organs and our health if they persistently flood the blood stream over a prolonged period of time, as happens to many people who live under stressful conditions as the next four years may bring upon some people Buhari will be de-establishing and upon himself who must be in stressful battle gear. Do not forget that we hardly forget the past. Buhari would surely remember that, as Head of State, a military coup which brought Ibrahim Babangida to power was staged against him when it was thought that he was going too far with social reforms!

This column is incompetent to address major problems the heart may suffer from in this situation. That is the realm for cardiologists or heart doctors. But it can venture nevertheless on a limited scale into some of the common heart troubles in Nigeria from which senior citizens suffer, including:

    •Hypertension or elevated blood pressure

    •Congestive heart failure

    •Heart attack

    •Enlarged heart

    •Angina pectoris

•Low blood pressure or hypotension and palpitation

The list can be endless. So are the remedies to these conditions as stated, only a few of them will be addressed, and briefly.

    Hypertension

To understand hypertension, we must understand that the blood or the river of life flows around the body to give each of the 100 trillion or so cells which compose it nutrients and oxygen, and to remove their waste products or poisons for evacuation from the body. The heart as a pumping machine pumps blood through many blood vessels of varying sizes and receives used or deoxygenated blood which it pumps back to the lungs for oxygenation. Oxygenated blood is pumped out again. Blood vessels are meant to be unblocked and supple, so they can dilate easily when blood flows through them. If they are blocked and hardened like stone they offer resistance to blood flow. Normal resistance of blood vessels to blood flow which does not permit through them is essential hypertension. This tension drives the blood along homewards to its target. If there is too little magnesium in the blood, an excess of calcium, its antagonist, may cause the extra or excess calcium to deposit in soft muscles of blood vessels. This causes hardening or tightening called arterosclerosis. It increases resistance to blood flow, and hypertension. Thus, a deficiency of magnesium can be a cause of hypertension. This deficiency is prevalent today because many people do not eat greens, especially deep, leafy vegetables, or take green food supplements such as liquid or capsulated chlorophyll, wheatgrass, spirulina, barley grass, spinach and kale powder drink or a mix grill of about 40 green plants in varying formulas. Many physicians believe the best blood pressure is 120/80. The top reading is called Systolic, the bottom one Diastolic. The diastolic reading is considered more relevant. For many years I ran a 110/70 blood pressure which nowadays sometimes drops to 100/sixty-something. In such situations fending towards low blood pressure or hypertension, I wish I had around me the herbal supplement BROOM TOPS, which is good for low blood pressure or CARROT JUICE, which elevates blood pressure whole carrot doesn’t. But I find a useful friend in L- Arginine or a product called STAMINEX which is on and off the Nigerian shelf.

lockages of all sorts occur in the blood vessels. One of them is caused by HOMOCYSTEINE, a greasy by product of the break-down of a protein. This can be easily dissolved and thorough fare created for the  blood by any good blood  thinner. Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and folic acid in a good formula performs this trick. So does cayenne. I have found useful, also, Serrapeptese, which dissolves growth. This as well, Brome lain, which tackles pain, as well as Attokenese. Sometimes, the blockage is due to fatty cholesterol plaque or the failure of the anticlotting factor, which allows blood platelets to spike and dump. The aforementioned blood thinners “defrost” the platelet clumps. So does the fatty plaque. Additionally, fish oil and Lecithin help against cholesterol build-up known also as atheromas (atherosclerosis) Please note the difference between arterosclerosis and artherosclerosis.

    Heart attack

In a heart attack, the vessel is taking blood to the heart (the carotic arteries) are blocked. A warning may have been coming from swellings in the legs which are due to blockages of blood circulation, or from chest pains called argina pectoris. chips of a blocking matter may escape from the foot to blood circulation to the heart. When the heart does not get enough blood for its sustenance and to pump, it packs up like a pumping machine without fuel or water to pump.

    Enlarged heart

An enlarged heart is often due to secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension results more from dietary deficiencies such as potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin E deficiency. In secondary hypertension, many vital organs such as the liver and the kidneys are so congested, blood cannot easily flow through them. In this case, they resist blood flow, and the heart has to enlarge in order to pack more power to pump harder in order to overcome resistance to blood flow. But this over stretches its muscles and may damage or kill them. This condition often responds to Vitamin B1 and garlic therapy, according to Rex Adams in Miracle medicine foods. Hawthorn berries and Co-Enzyme Q10 or CoQ10 do it also.

    Angina pectoris

The carotid artery is hardly harder than a soft drinks straw. When it is blocked, chest pains may arise in the left side of the chest and may, be followed by shooting pains in the left arm from the scapula (shoulder blade) to the fingers.

Now, let’s hear from Judy Limberg Mcfarland and Jean Carper and, perhaps also, from Patricia Bragg. Judy Mcfarland, in Aging without growing old, one of the books this series recommends for your library, says:

“In most nations, every other death is caused by cardio vascular disease, both in men and women… Co-Enzyme Q10, also called CoQ10, Ubiquinol 10 or Vitamin Q, is now being called a ‘miracle nutrient’ by many. It is an essential component of metabolic process involved in energy (ATP) production. Dr Karl Folkers, who was professor and director of the Institute for Biomedical Research at the University of Texas in Austin, has been recognised for years as the world’s leading researcher on CoQ10. I had the honor of hearing Dr. Folkers’ lecture at the America Academy of Antiaging Conference in 1996. He was over 90 years old and charming. During his lecture, Dr. Folkers said, ‘I don’t use the word cure lightly, but CoQ10 is the cure for heart disease’ he has concluded biochemical, biomedical and clinical research on CoQ10 for some 35 years and has succeeded in establishing its structure and in isolating CoQ10 in human heart. The highest concentration of the enzyme is in the heart’s muscle. His research shows a definite link in CoQ10 deficiency and human heart disease.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in Change era (6)

MANY thoughts must be swirling in the head of President – elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). Lame duck President Ebele Jonathan, who will quit office in about 14 days, has suddenly abandoned the toga of a “Shockingly slow and inept “ President and begun to dig the ground around Gen. Buhari. In the digging around the incoming President, President Jonathan has been planting human “mines” in the forms of appointment of his party–men to public offices. In other words, he is infusing the blood of his party into the blood of the in–coming administration. And since the “blood” of both political parties do not belong to the same “blood group”, we can expect the infusion of PDP men through the back door into an APC government to produce a “Shockingly slow and inept” effect in the Buhari administration, if he does not immediately quash all appointments President Jonathan has been making since his election defeat by Gen Buhari (rtd) on March 28. I expect you to ask me how I came by the expression, “Shockingly slow and inept.” It isn’t my own coinage. It was developed by the American media to describe the responses of the Jonathan administration to burning issues of governance in Nigeria. So if a shockingly slow and inept president suddenly becomes an “active volcano” on the eve of his departure from office, this must create a swirl in the head and mind of the man who is to take office from him, in this case Gen. Buhari (rtd). There are other ongoing political matters that can or are creating more swirls.

This swirl will be generating free radicals in the blood and in the cells of the brain and else where which will require antioxidants to quench. We should remember that this series has focused on:

•Knowledge from anti – aging research that the free radicals we ingest or produce in our bodies destroy our cells and organs, make us age prematurely or make us die many years before the expiry date of our bodies.

•Antioxidants destroy these free radicals, thereby protecting our bodies and giving us the opportunity to live for as long as possible pain and disease free.

•An aged person like Gen. Buhari (rtd), 72, will face severe rigours of office which may expose him to free radicals barrage, thereby making him unable to apply his physical body as effectively and as efficiently as the needs to, if he is to ride the storms and keep his election promises predicated on Change of all life forms in Nigeria for the better.

•What applies to Gen. Buhari (rtd) applies to us all, young and old. I am glad many readers of the column are getting the message of this free radicals battle to destroy our bodies and how we can add antioxidants to our diet to destroy them. Last week, I met with one of such readers for more than one hour. He is Mr. Onisomo, a senior company executive in Lagos. A young man in comparison with my age (65 by, August 23),he did not wish to make the mistake old people of today made in their youth, carrying less about their health than everything else and arriving in old age with One Or more deformities of their health. He obtained the first inspiration for this from a talk given somewhere by Charlie Boy. 62, in that talk, Charlie Boy advised the youth not to delay care for their bodies until those bodies literately began to protest lack of care with manifestations of pain and disease. As the series progresses, it would visit other organs in need of care and return occasionally to the brain and the eyes on in respect of which some ideas have been shared. For now, I would like to share one more on the brain. It is about melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland, an endocrine gland situated deep behind the brain. As we age, the pineal produces smaller amounts of melatonin than it did when we were young. One  of our guides on this anti – aging tour, Judy Limberg Mcfarland, whose book, Aging without growing old, which I have been suggesting is a must – book for the health library of every one ,

reports:  ,,… 30 years of laboratory research  resulted in Dr. Walter Pier. Paoli’s landmark studies which demonstrated that the pineal gland is our body’s natural time keeper and is regulated by natural ebb and flow by the hormone melatonin. I had the honour of meeting and hearing Dr. Pier Paoli’s lecture on melatonin at the 2nd international Anti – Aging Conference in Monte Carlo, Monaco. He feels that we may be able to slow the process of aging, turn back the hands of time, strengthen our immune system, and thereby heighten our resistance to disease and even prolong our sexual vitality by simply restoring the melatonin levels of youth. There are thousands of animal and human studies that suggest many roles for melatonin”.

Judy Mc farland says Dr. Frank Varese, of Laguna Hills, California, introduced her to natural hormone replacement many years ago. And this would spur her interest in melatonin.

She said that, through him, she learned about Dr Pier paoli’s, a leading researcher on melatonin who co– authored the book

    MELATONIN MIRACLE.

rom him and other researcher it has come to light that melatonin miracle may be the most powerful antioxidant yet to be discovered. according to Dr. Russel J. Riter, Ph.D.,  author of Melatonin your body’s natural wonder drug, and professor of neuroendocrinology, of the University of Texas. He had behind him more than 30 years of melatonin research. We now know that melatonin is made from tryptophan

An essential amino acids, which the body cannot manufacture from other amino acids but obtain from the diet. Judy Mcfarland says some dietery sources of melatonin include turkey, milk, whey, soy protein, cottage cheese, yoghurt, fish, bee, liver, lamb, peanuts, pumpken, and sesame seeds, brown rice and lentils” I would not forget to add SPIRULINA, the blue green aigae which warehouses all 23 or80 amino acids.

    Judy mcfarland goes on: “66

Melatonin was discovered in 1958 when Dr. Lernar at Yale University isolated the molecule. The other sex hormones have discussed, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, prognorelone, is all made from cholesterol. Melatonin, however, is made from the amino acid tryptophan.”

Tryptophan is converted to serotonin, a neurotransmitter (brain chemical) which helps to control mood and sleep may therefore, be good for people suffering from depression. Sleep at night,” says Judy Mcfarland,” serotonin is converted into melatonin. The initial clinical studies on melatonin focused on problems related to the sleep wake cycle or circadian rhythm of the body. But today, melatonin ranks as one of the important hormones, stimulating the release of a wide variety of other hormones from the pituitary gland. Not to bore you, I would quickly like to mention a study which I believe will excite your interest in melatonin and encourage you to add more tryptophan rich foods or supplement, including spirulina, to your diet.

Dr. Pierpaoli, mentioned earlier, reports on his melatonin experiments with mice:

“In the fall of 1985, I began the first of what will be many experiments, testing the effect of administering melatonin supplement to older mice. I selected healthy male mice that were 19 months old (human equivalent of about 65 years). They live to about 24 months. I divided the mice into two groups, one given melatonin in the evening drinking water, the other group regular tap water. Everything else, diet, living conditions, was exactly the same. At first, I could detect very little difference between the two groups of mice.

Within five months, however, the difference was astonishing. The untreated mice began to display the expected signs and symptoms of old age of senescence. They lost muscle mass, they developed bald patches, their eyes grew cloudy with cataracts, their digestion slowed down, and, so, generally, did they in some they seemed horn out and tired. They were winding down and becoming old. On the other hand, the melatonin –treated mice looked and behaved like their grand children. The mice on melatonin had actually grown more for and continued to boast thick, shiny coats. Their eyes were clear and cataracts free, their digestion had improved and, instead of growing thin and wasting in the manner of the non- melatonin treated mice; they maintained their strength and muscle tone. The vigour and energy with which they moved around their cage resembled the behaviour of mice half their age.

Most importantly, they lived much longer than the untreated mice, having reached their expected lifespan of about 24 months (70- 75 years in human terms), began to die. Yet the melatonin mice lived on and on, an astonishing six months longer, which in human terms would amount to gaining an extra 25 years of life, or living part 100.

Judy Mcfarland says when Dr. Pierpoli determined the cause of death in the untreated mice; he found they had died of cancer. This was common for the breed and age “surprisingly, the melatonin- treated mice were disease free, even in their extended lives. Their organs had shrunk, typically of old age but they did not suffer or die from cancer.”

The import of these experiment, says Judy Mcfarland, is that if melatonin extended the lives of the rats, and they did not die of disease even during the extension, disease couldn’t be age-related as many people think but a cause of the abundance of free radicals and a deficiency of antioxidants.

The experiments were repeated many times over, and the same results were observed. When male and female mice were used, it was discovered that they “displayed the sexual prowess of much younger mice, in fact, right up until their death these mice were sexually active.” As this would be the equivalents of men and women 100 years old, it was thought melatonin supplementation of the diet could improve libido and sexual response to that age in humans.

Beyond these, melatonin has been put up as capable of lowering high blood cholesterol, reducing the formation of atheroma plaque in blood vessels and damaging them, offsetting or normalising high blood pressure; checking damage to heart muscle by corticosteroids and free radicals, apart from boosting immune function. In young people in whom the pineal gland is working optimally, Dr. Pierpoli says melatonin can enlarge the size of the thymus gland to normal. This gland matures the T-Cells which fight off foreign organisms and cancernous cells. In old people, the thymus gland would have shrunk and may even reappear to disappear. In breast cancer research, the pineal gland has been found to pump out more melatonin, which is found in deficient states in cancer disease. Coincidentally, chemotherapy suppresses the pineal gland.

    The eye

s promised last Thursday, here’s more information on eye care. I did promise to provide more information on EYEMAXPLUS which I suggested was more comprehensive with about 20 nutrients than many of the eye health formulas on the Nigerian market today. These eye health antioxidant formulas are good for the prevention of eye disease and for supporting eye recovery from surgery, for example. The package of EYEMAXPLUS (every two capsules comprises Vitamin A beta carotene) 15,000.Vitamin C ( as a cerola fruit and Aascorbic Acid) 500 mg. Vitamin D ( as ergocalciferol) 200 i.u. i.u.Vitamin E ( as Aloha tocopherol and succinate)

400 i.u. Vitamin B1 (as thiamine mononitrate) 25mg. Vitamin B2  (as Riboflavin ) 10 mg. Vitamin B3 (as Nacinur) 50 mg.Vitamin B6 (as pyriodoxine) 25 mg. folate (as folic acid 800mg. Vitamin B12 (as cyanocobamin) 25mg. Biotin 300 mg. pantothenic acid ( as calcium pantothenate) 150 mg. calcium (as calcium carbonate) 200 mg. iodine from help 400 mg. magnesium (as magnesium oxide) 400 mg. zinc (as zinc aspartate, oxide complex) 25 mg. selenium ( as selenium amino acid ) 200 mcg. copper ( amino acid chelate) 2mg.

    Macular degeneration

If you find someone standing right before you, who does not look at you straight in the eye but from the corners of the eye, he or she most probably is suffering from macular degeneration.

Judy mcfarland describes it as follows The cause of macular degenerating is unknown, although it is suggested that free radicals damage due to long – term exposure to visible light and uv radiation may be responsible. Several studies have shown that when deprived of antioxidants, many different species, including primates, our closest relatives in the annual kingdom, are likely to develop retinal degeneration. Studies also show that exposure to bright light also accelerates retinal degeneration in animals. Macular degeneration is a progressive but painless disorder that affects the central part of the retina, causing gradual loss of vision. The retina is responsible for central vision, which is required for writing, swimming, driving and distinguishing colour. It usually affects both eyes, either simultaneously or one shortly after the other. She says trouble begins with partial breakdown of an misulating layer between the retina and the choroid.” Fluid leaks and new blood vessels growing from the choroid through the retina damage the latter. This creates “a circular area of blindness” which grows until it may wipe off two or three words at normal reading distance.

    Diabetic retinopathy:

This is a disease of diabetics and hypertensive’s. Blood vessels of the retina begin to bleed in diabetes, a group of blood cells called platlets clump together, causing diseases of small and large blood vessels. Vitamin E reduces this tendency. All other antioxidants, including Alpha Lipoic Acid, especially good for diabetics are well recommended by Judy McFarland for this condition. So are Chromium and Selenium. Chromium helps burn blood sugar. Selenium sometimes acts like Vitamin E.

The information comes with the warning that, going by the Physician Desk Reference List, there are about 94 Pharmaceutical medications that can cause glaucoma. This includes steroids, anti-hypertensive and anti-depressants. Other suggestions made for eye health are Bilbery, ginkgo biloba, Lutein and Zeazanthen, Taurine, Carotenoids, Grape Seed extract, Vitamin C, Selenium, Vitamin A, B2, B6, Glutathione etc.

    Conclusion

As we wade through the storms of earthly existence, we cannot avoid those swirls of the head, mind and body which expose us to free radical predation. Lame duck President Jonathan is already digging the ground around in-coming President Buhari and planting human mines everywhere. There should be some combustion if a President Buhari erases these human – mine appointments. Besides the outgoing government party has been trying to belittle or flaw the election victory of General Buhari. It says votes were inflated for General Buhari and that President Jonathan is not contesting the votes to prevent bloodbath in Nigeria. That makes Jonathan a hero of Nigerian people and paints Buhari as a villain. The Jonathan side does not mention votes on its side configured under “special circumstances” they do not say what Jonathan would have done if we won the polls outright and the north rose against him. Anyone who knows Jonathan well knows he would have done same.

Poor me: Toga and called in the troops. Happily, while Jonathan was busy throwing money at the voters, the opposition was getting the international community interested in the upcoming polls. They, and the Nigerian courts, dissuaded Jonathan from using soldiers to railroad himself back to power. His balloon was punctured, and he had no choice but to go. If he did not go away and people died through his use of troops, he would have faced the wrath of the world community trying to discredit the victor is uncharitable and ungentlemanly. Trying to set bobby traps with lame duck – time appointments is worse. Equally terrible is the agenda that, within six months, Buhari’s government would have failed every-one. We all should expect the swirls and arm up with antioxidant defenses for our health.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in Change era (5)

MOTHER nature is wise and right wherever you turn in this wonderful Creation. Can it be otherwise when nature bears or anchors the will of God in Creation? In the fourth part of this series last week, I answered the question of a reader who wanted to know why mother Nature did not equip the human body with antioxidants to destroy free radicals which destroy human cells, tissues, organs, system, and by, extension, shorten human life, when it is clear that we must always encounter free radicals and even produce them in our bodies every day.

The enquirer thought that Mother Nature, always credited with WISDOM, should have seen well ahead and provided the human body with a free radicals antidote. The reader arrived at this point of enquiry after reading about how free radicals are present in the air we breathe, water we drink and food we eat, how germs produce them in our bodies to destroy the immune system, how the immune system produces its own free radicals to destroy germs, how waste product of metabolism (breathing, digestion e.t.c) are all free radicals. It is reasonable to infer from this that if these wastes are not completely eliminated as they are produced, we accumulate free radicals overtime, endanger the cells and shorten life on earth.

Many people, for example, do not employ up to 40 per cent of the capacity of their lungs to bring in oxygen and to eliminate carbon dioxide produced during metabolism. Exercise helps to improve utilisation of more lung capacity.

Many people are constipated. This means the organs of digestion have been so impaired by free radicals that they cannot function properly and this is causing constipation, which is loading and poisoning the system with free radicals. Can we imagine a motor car with a running engine (“metabolism”) in which the waste products ( carbon and soot of the combustum of petrol or diesel do not leave the engine through the exhaust pipe? Even the kitchens and fire places of old were equipped with chymnies to take smoke and soot safely out.

The reader in reference was baffled by what he considered a slack on the part of Mother Nature when he learned that researchers extended the lives of some animals, including fruit flies, five times over when they fed them antioxidants to erase free radicals which previously ravaged their bodies, causing premature aging and early death in their species.

In the second part of the series, GINGKO BILOBA was thrown up as one of the best antiaging antioxidants for the brain. This has spurred interest in this ancient herb which protect the brain and the eyes in particular against free  radicals. More antioxidant for the brain will be mentioned as the series progress.

Last Thursday, the fourth part of this series showed that Mother Nature equipped our bodies from birth with no fewer than three antioxidants complexes to deal with all sorts of free radicals which may assail us. Our duty is to maintain their levels by consuming foods and drinks which contain them or their building blocks. Happily today, the natural health industry, responding to the work of the research community, has produced food supplements which we can take to augment or boost the stock levels.

In this, we can be like the wise motorist who never allows his petrol tank to fall below the half guage before he “fills up” the tank. Some wait till the red light warns them they are on “reserve” fuel. Often, I see pictures of people  who are on full antioxidant tank and those who are on “reserve”. Both may be heavy smokers. One may be on Vitamin C food supplement, whereas, the other is not. cigarette smoke produces free radicals, especially for the passive smoker, to inhale. Every cigarette sick smoked is said to deprive the smoker of about 60 mg of Vitamin C, an antioxidant Vitamin.

he one who takes about 1000mg of  Vitamin C everyday with food may loose about 600mg of it to smoking, whereas the smoker who does not take Vitamin C may be completely depleted of the little stock of it he had. He ages faster than his friends, and may be in and out of the doctors’ clinic everyday, whereas the other man suffers no complain.

What happens to the cigarette smoker happens to the alcohol consumer and the coffee drinkers, to mention a few examples. I learnt from Dr. Don. Colbert that, since he discovered coffee to be acidic, free radicals laden and, therefore, toxic, and since he could not stop taking coffee, he took an antioxidant with every cup. Dr. Colbert patient may sight him taking coffee and assume, stupidly, that he was a doctor and taking coffee, they too, could take it without any harm to their bodies.

They would be ignorant of his antidote and harm themselves. I learned, also from Dr. author of, ‘What your doctor does not know about your nutrition may be killing you’, that he never fails to add Grape seed extract to his prescriptions. Many pharmaceutical drugs require antioxidant fire power to eliminate the free radical they produced in the body.

Ever since I shared this idea with an Alhaja I met in a cab on the way to Ilorin a few years ago, she has not fail to take it whenever Vitiligo spots appeared on her skin, and It has not failed to work for her.

    Nature wisdom.

As suggested last week, everyone must strive to build up or fill up or top up the natural antioxidant complex stocks Mother Nature gave to us all at birth. These are:

    •Clutathatione

    •Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) and

    •Catalase

As a reminder, Glutathatione is made in the liver from three of the 23 or 50 amino acids, namely:

    •Cysteine

    •Glutamic Acid and •Glycene.

or these reasons, it was suggested that free form amino acids or Spirulina be a part of the daily diet. There are two lines of SOD. One Zinc and Copper. This line protects the cytoplasm of the cell. The other line comes from Manganese and protects the Mitochondria or energy factories of the cell.  For this reason, Zinc, Copper and Manganese should be in the daily diet. Many people prefer cheap and pharmaceutical Vitamin C. I go for the alkaline or buffered type which comes with Calcium, magnesium, Iron and Manganese, among others. As for Catalase antioxidant enzyme complex, which destroys hydrogen perozide in the body, converting it to water and oxygen, the ingredient to consume is Selenium, a good supplement for HIV- challenged people and of which we shall soon learn more.

The eye and the vision of President Mohammadu Buhari’s desk should be laden with files in the change era. For change is not roler-coaster, but work. My high school physics taught me in the 1960’s that work was force on distance. I do not think that definition has changed. It means the force applied on a mass over a specific distance. How much change President Buhari would bring about in Nigeria, therefore, would be how much force he can apply over the obtuse, heavy minds and brains of Nigerians in one, two, three, four years. This will call up lots of information which he has to study and take decisions on. If he will keep his election promise, he will not be like President Ebele Jonathan who delegated his office wholesales or thereabout to his ministers who, recognising his weakness for work, capitalised on it. So, can we hear the opinions of our friends, JEAN CARPER’s on good vision, in her best- seller “Stop aging now” and JUDY LIMBERG MCFARLAND in ‘Aging without growing old’? Both are star books for health libraries I have been recommending in this series. Problems of the eyes are many and beyond the scope of this column. I would, therefore, limit their suggestions to those problems prevalent in Nigeria. This including (1) Cataract (2) Glaucoma and (3) Macular degeneration among others.

The bottom line, according to many studies they cite, is that the eye is saturated with antioxidants to prevent its vital organs from being oxidised by rays of the sun. But, overtime, these antioxidants molecules are used up and not restocked. Many people resort to surgery rather than diet only to find the knife couldn’t sort their problems. I’ve had glaucoma since I was 45 in 1995. This was to be joined by cataract from which opthalmogists says I am now free. In learning to take care of my eyes, I learned about how it is well supplied with blood and oxygen and of how blockages of blood circulation may cause vision to or induce blindness. Vitamin A is a good antioxidants present in the eye to protect and replenish the retina. But the eye cannot absorb vitamin A well in the absence of zinc, another antioxidant. Alpha Lipoic Acid, yet another antioxidant, functions in the fluid and tissue parts of the eye.

Beta carotene, yet another antioxidant protects the lens against cataracts. So do the twin antioxidants Lutein and Zeazanthin, plentiful in Marigold flower from where they are commercially extracted for eye formulas. They filter the damaging blue spectrum of light from sunlight to prevent it from “cooking” the lens to a “cataract” against light flow through the eye. From the Cambridge Institute for Better Vision, I was to learn the eyes need 33 nutrients everyday. These are present in the company’s EYE MAXPLUS.

Many more are present in its Advanced eye and vision formula. Let’s hear from Jean Carper:

“Everybody knows cataracts are a phenomenon of getting old. Right? The figures show it: only about 4.5 percent of Americans have cataracts in their fiftieth. By ages 70 and 80, that figure has multiplied 10 times… almost 50 percent have vision dimmed by cataracts. But is age the real culprit? And are cataracts really a necessary part of aging? Bluntly, such senile cataracts, like so many infirmities as we get older, appear to stem from a Vitamins deficiency, says Dr. Irwin H. Rosenberg, director of USDA’s Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Turfts. Or, more especially, an antioxidant deficiency. Yes, it’s those destructive free radicals at work again.

“This time, they have targeted the lens of the eyes. They are born of photo oxidation that comes with simple exposure to ultraviolet light or being in sunlight so the light strikes the lens of the eyes. Its normal, but after years, it takes a toll by oxidising proteins, damaging crystalline in the lens, turning it opaque. That is, unless you have plentiful supply of antioxidants in the lens to spice out the damaged crystalline so it does not build up into cloudy lens.  Its rather clear-cut, says Dr. Rosenberg.

“A number of studies indicate that cataracts tend to come to people who gets the least antioxidant Vitamins and spare those who get the most. In particular, Vitamin C seems most powerful in warding off cataracts. In one study, Americans in the lowest one third of Vitamin C intake were 14 times more apt to develop cataracts than those in the tight end. Those getting the least Vitamin E had a three times greater risk of developing cataracts, those skimping on Beta Carotene had one and a half times greater risks for cataracts as they aged.

“In other recent research, at the State University of New York at Stonybrook, investigators found that relatively high intakes of antioxidant nutrients corresponded with low risks of cataracts in a group of nearly 1,400 people, aged 40 to 70. Also, those who took multivitamin supplements at least once a week for at least a year were less apt to develop cataracts as they aged than non-vitamin takers. Nor do you have to suffer macular degeneration, a serious degeneration of the eye’s macular leading to blindness.

recent study by Micheal S. Kaminski, at the Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon, reported that 92 percent of a group of men and women with macular degeneration were deficient in at least one anti-oxidant nutrient. 75 percent lacked two or more, most notably Vitamin E, Zinc and Selenium. Research shows that nearly everybody over age 55 lacks at least one of the major antioxidants thought to protect against macular degeneration, and three-quartres are deficient in all three. A study at the Natural eye institute show that people with the highest blood level of fruit and vegetable chemicals called carotennoids, including Beta Carotene, were only one third as apt to develop macular degeneration as those with the lowest carotenoid levels. Even those who ate moderate amounts of carotenoids cut their odds of macular degeneration in half. A carotenoid called Lutein may be particularly powerful according to Swiss researchers. They have found Lutein highly concentrated in the macular, the part of the eye responsible for sharp vision. They theorise that antioxidant Lutein and other Carotenoids fight off oxygen free radicals that can damage the macular, destroying sight. Interestingly, vegetables highest in Lutein are Kale, Spinach and collard greens. ‘’In animal studies, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Beta carotene  have been especially protecting against macular degeneration.”

Jean Carper reported, also, that Havard University researchers found that 18,000 male physicians cut their chances of developing cataracts by 27 percent simply by taking a multivitamin formula every day. They tracked the men for 10 years.

JUDY LIMBERG McFARLAND says: “Light is our richest sense, and link to the world and its wealth of imagery. It’s always amazing to me when I study the eye to think of all processes that must take place for us to be able to see. Each waking second, the eyes sends about a billion pieces of information to the brain. The eye can sense about 10 gradations of light and seven million gradations of colors. We see in such detail because the eye is almost an extension of the brain. The health of the eye is largely dependent  on a variety of nutrients, the foremost of which is oxygen. When the  normal  function that delivers nutrition and oxygen to the eye is impaired, many disorders soon follow. Most of these disorders are associated with aging- cataract, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. But are they truly linked to aging? They may not be. “Although cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration have been called signs of aging for years, these  health problems may also be austed or lessened with proper diet and nutritional supplement. In both human and animal studies, antioxidants seem to offer the greatest protection against aged related degeneration of the eye.”

She speaks of cataracts, as the loss of transperancy in the lens of the eye, the only transparent organ in the body.

Judy Mcfarland adds: “Many investigators, beginning as early as 1935, have reported that cataract patients have very little Vitamin C in the Aqueous humour, the fluid held between the lens and the tissue at the front of the eye. According to the late Linus Pauling, Ph.D., in a normal person there is 25 times more Vitamin C in the Aqueous humour of the eye than in the blood plasma. Supplementation with Vitamin C has caused early cataract to regress or even disappear. The vision of 60 to 90 percent of patients with early cataract improved in one study with some cares of improvement labeled “dramatic”?

Low Vitamin C has actually been labeled by researchers as the cause, not the consequence of cataract formation. What I want to know is why, after  60 years of  research, this information hasn’t been filled to every senior citizen. As part of their health care programme. Now, you know cataract can regress, reverse, or disappear.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in Change era (4)

    Gingko biloba

This ancient blood circulation herb is still ringing bells of sonorous sounds in many ears and brains. Last Thursday, it featured in this series as a star brain herb for moving blood and oxygen to the micro units of the brain, thereby waking them up, if they are sleeping or dying, improving memory, alertness, vigour and…. I used Ginkgo biloba as a food supplement ( I still do) in my work days as editor and never for a movement experience foggy or faded thought. Today, Gingko biloba is a star anti–aging, antioxidant prescription for the brain, going by several scientific studies worldwide.  It is an indispendable food supplement, also, for people who are recovering from stroke or any other brain trauma.

And for many of us who rely almost exclusively on the cell phone for telephone communication, Gingko should be a feature of the daily diet. I got this impression some years ago when I watched a documentary on what the cell phone may be doing to the brain. It is said to be powered on the energy frequency on which the microwave oven functions.

That means that any time we hold a cell phone close to the ear during a telephone conversation its energy actually “cooks” the brain as the microwave oven cooks food.

Microwave cooking damages or at best alters the molecular structure of food. It is the structure of the food molecule which performs such functions in the human cell which corresponds with the structure of the molecule.

Thus, an altered molecular structure will produce nothing other than an altered molecular functions. And an altered molecular function means an aberrant or deviant or abnormal cell. Is this why critics of the cell phone believe it can predispose its users to cancer? Is this why cases of brain tumour are growing? The Russians may know what the rest of the world doesn’t know or are pretending not to know. They do not eat microwave food. I too, do not. In the said documentary, the colour of the parts of brain irradiated, so to say, by cell phone “Microwaving” change for some time. It normalises after a while, perhaps after the cells fight back to repair the damage. Inflicted upon them by this seemingly  indispensable modern technology.

It is possible the cells mobilize all the antioxidants at their disposal to fight off free radicals unlashed upon them by the cell phone. That process is called ionization . The complex cell is being reduced to its component parts. It is a feature of electro pollution  in our modern age. Every cell in the human body produces, electricity of a particular frequency. Electricity of a higher frequency can break down the cell and its electric energy. That’s why people get electrocuted when they are exposed to high voltage electric current.

How many men wonder what may be happening to their brains. ‘During a haircut, when the barber runs an electric clipper over their heads? Is brain cell frequency “jammed” by the frequency of electricity in the clipper’s electric motor coil? What protection have they in the brains or from dietary supplements such as Gingko biloba? As president, Gen Mohammodu Buhari (rtd) will make and receive many cell phone calls every day. Gingko biloba will surely help him. But so will also many other antioxidants.

adies and gentlemen, we are discussing how a president of Gen. Buhari’s age can cope with the pressure of office without slacking or slurring in the job or suffering a health break–down. Remember the age, 70 something, was an election campaign subject for the government party, the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) which did not expect him to survive rigours of the campaigns in opposition, I expect the PDP to continue to hammer this subject. Already, its members are making a mountain of post election statement by Gen. Buhari that he should not be expected to perform miracles. A President Buhari can knock the bottom out of this drive.

Happily, as shown last Thursday, anti–aging researchers have found that we age rapidly and suffer health deteriation largely because we do not have enough antioxidants to overcome free radicals which we ingest from food, air and water, which our immune system unleashes on germs and which they, too, unleash on the immune system, and from the waste products of our body’s metabolic processes.

Thinking about this war of antioxidants and free radicals going on within us, which we hardly know about until we are down from free radicals fire power. I remembered an interesting book, The wonderful world within, written by Dr Roger Williams, whose research led to the discovery of some vitamins, including,  I think, pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5).  Later, I may return to this vitamin for the benefit of people who are mangled by stress.

Now, I wish to think about the question which one of the readers of the column asked after reading last week about how free radicals make us age and die prematurely and about how a rich store of antioxidants can extend our lifespan, as they have extended those of some experimental animals about five times or more, and make us disease and pain free even at close to double the present span of earth – life.

The question was if mother nature is  wise and perfect and kind, why didn’t she not equip our bodies naturally to fight free radicals for as long as she expects us to live?

I asked this question in the 1980s when all the doctors I sought help from for my grandmother’s breast cancer said there was no cure for cancer. I just couldn’t believe that the good Lord would have permitted the human body to come into being without adequate safeguards of its health being provided prior to that great event which, from many creation stories, was actually the last event in the creation process. I was to learn while searching for the grains of truth of life for the care of the healthy human body that neither drugs nor injections but the right kinds of foods and drinks bring lasting health. These right kinds of foods and drinks” are the natural edibles mother nature provides for the replenishment, always, of natural antioxidant complexes she factored into our bodies. Thus, each one of us was endowed from birth with three major, if not more, antioxidant complexes and must maintain them in high store if we are ever to win the battle with free radicals. Another lesson for me in this scenario is that we cannot avoid exposure to free radicals. We can only minimize the exposure and maximize our antioxidant response to them. For free radicals are like criminals and antioxidants like policemen who must hold them in check. In which society are there no criminals and policemen?

    Antioxidant complexes

As usual, we will listen to our two best–seller author friends, whose books I again recommend for the health section of your library. They are Judy Limberg Mcfarland, author of ‘Aging without growing old’, and Jean Carper’s ‘Stop aging now’. Before they take the floor I will like to say that three of SOD natural antioxidant complexes found in every cell of the body are:

    •Glutathione,

    •Super oxide Dismutase

    •Catalase

Glutathione: This antioxidant produced by the body, Judy Limberg Mcfarland says: “Glutathione” is manufactured in the liver by three naturally ocuring amino acids. Cysterine, Glutamic Acid, and Leucine. Glutathione is a power house of antioxidants. A lack of it in the cells is considered by some researchers to be the foremost cause of premature aging. It protects  every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. In one study, those with 20 per cent higher blood levels of Glutathione had only one–third the rate of arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, circulatory symptoms, diabetes, stomach symptoms, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) when compared to those with lower Glutathione levels.”

Dr Mara Julius, the author of this finding at the University of Michigan, said even in every old age, people with the highest levels of Glutathione bounce back from diseases and accidents, the same way much younger people do. They are just more vigorous. In a section in the “Anti–aging: Benefits of Glutathione”, Judy Mcfarland quotes researcher Jean  Carper as reporting that Glutathione offers the following health benefits:

Glutamic acid, Glycine and cysteine, components of Glutathione, are amino acids. Some researchers argue that Glutathione blood levels are not boosted by Glutathione food supplement as it is boosted by the consumption of Glycine, Glutamic acid and cysteine. For this reason, they suggest these three amino acids be consumed from diets rich in them or from amino acids food supplements which contain them. In the light of this, and given the fact that amino acids make up the proteins in our bodies, the health food industry has striven to provide us with amino acids in forms we can easily absorb them without the need to obtain. The get them from meat, fish or other flesh sources which leave lots of toxic and free radical waste in the body. One of the provisions is known as FREE FORM AMINO ACIDS. They come in softgels or sauce past. There are also plant sources, of which SPIRULINA is a prime asset. This blue–green algae was discovered by Europeans in the lake chad region. European researchers were surprised that inhabitants of this region aged gracefully, had a long life span and were not disposed to many of the diseases of modern life. They ate little of beef and egg. Their staple was SPIRULINA.  Now, Spirulina has been found to have one of the richest plant sources of Beta carotene, an antioxidant, and it has all 23 amino acids (including Glycine, Glutamic acid and Cystane) in an easily digested and absorbable form. On Glutathione, Jean Carper says: Glutathione is made up of three amino acids and is produced in all cells of the body. Its main purpose is to break down and dispose of potentially dangerous toxics that invade your body. It is an antioxidant that cleanses fatty foods of free radicals hazards in the digestive tract and protect cells everywhere against free radical harm. Because Glutathione is a natural substance, it is also found in certain foods. Additionally, Glutathione has been synthesized and made into supplements. Therefore you can combat aging both by eating Glutathione in food and by taking it as a supplement. Further, you can up your bloods levels of Glutathione by ingesting certain vitamins and other compounds that are building blocks the body uses to synthesis Glutathione.  If you have low Glutathione, one, you are one third more likely to have chronic diseases a sense of poor health, decreased functions and early death.

Two, fully 77 per cent hospitalised with chronic diseases had a low Glutathione defiency. In one study, taking fat boosts your need for Glutathione, thus the more that you eat, the greater your expected defiency of Glutathione. A drop in Glutathione as we age allows free radical activities to heat up unchecked, causing a gradual decay of immune functioning. Yet, by replenishing Glutathione, you can abort and reverse this inheritability. When tufts researchers, Dr Simin Meydani added Glutathione to the white blood cells of elderly people, immune activity revived up nearly equally that of cells of much younger people. Specifically, Glutathione boosts the ability of cells to divide, enabling them to mount stronger attacks on the foreign invaders. How utterly devastating shortages of Glutathione can be to cells was dramatically illustrated by experiments at Stanford University School of Medicine. When deprived of their normal Glutathione, T. cells (the warriors of the immune system) of healthy individuals became so disturbed, they could no longer appropriately respond to signals to wage war on microbes: the famished cells eventually became so confused that they actually killed themselves, a phenomenon researchers call programmed cell death.

    Post Script:

lutathione has such a powerful effect that, in test  tubes it stops the replication or spread of the AIDS virus by about 90 per cent. AIDS patients are typically low in Glutathione  thus, the antioxidants is being tested on HIV patients to see if it can partially restore immune functioning. Glutathione is the Rambo that rushes in to safe your cells by neutralising and breaking down free radicals. So they are harmlessly flushed out of the body. It can deactivate at least 30 cancer–causing substances, according to Dean Jones, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine. Glutathione even acts as a prophylactic against the formation of free radicals by destroying peroxides that are parents to free radicals. Glutathione formidable powers, as a free radicals terminator may help explain why eating fruits and vegetables, naturally high in Glutathione, is so often tied to lower rates of cancer, heart disease and other chronic diseases. In a resent study, people who are the most Glutathione rich raw fruits and vegetables were only half as likely to develop oral cancer as those eating the least. Jean Carper says, also, that “sufferers of some Type II diabetes can be helped by Glutathione. Especially spectacular, Glutathione can help save you from the harmful consequences of eating rancid, dangerous fats” she says. “Glutathione actually detoxifies or cleanses food of oxidized or rancid fats in your intestinal tract preventing it from detonating into showers of free radicals to attack your cells.

In a striking study by, Yee Aw Ph.D., Associate Professor of Physiology at the Louisiana State University Medicals Center, put oxidized fats into animals intestinal tract. When she added Glutathione the amount of free radicals that were metabolised and released from intestinal cells into the blood, strain fell dramatically.

The moment rancid fats enters the cells, explains Dr Aw, Glutathione destroys it. If there is enough Glutathione to destroy all the rancid fats that enters, none is left to go back out to circulate through the blood. But if your cells in the G.I tract have so little Glutathione, and you eat too much rancid fats, or both, the defense collapses, releasing harzardous oxidized fats to circulate throughout your body, promoting all the torment of aging. “In an exciting breakthrough researchers at Duke University Medical Centre actually cured Type II (adult onset) diabetes in animals by boosting Gluthathione levels. In the experiment, diabetes – prone mice on high fat diets developed diabetes. The reason, explains Biochemist Dike Opara, when mice burned the gobs of dietary fats, high amounts of oxygen free radicals were generated. These radicals interfered with or shut off the body’s ability to metabolise sugar. This led to an overload of sugar in the blood causing the diabetes. Increasely, the diabetes disappeared when the mice were fed glutamine, a natural amino acid that caused levels of gluthathione to skyrocket. The gluthathione then mopped up the destructive free radicals so they no longer hindered sugar metabolism.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in change era (2)

The tea party will soon be over, all foggy, dreamy vision will clear and the questions will begin to ring out loud and clear: where are we heading?

Of course, we are in the year of the Lord 2015 and will soon be in the hands of a new President.

This one doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, isn’t into women, is a man of few words and doesn’t, like a spendthrift, throw money away and around as if it comes by as easily as grains of sand and pebbles.

Welcome to the cockpit, Gen. Mohammadu  Buhari (rtd).

AS I suggested last week, work has to begin in earnest if the no nonsense Buhari myth is not to be fractured. Ethnic tensions must be doused and ethnic wounds healed. In addition, weak links in the ALL progressives congress (APC) has to be expertly soldiered if the President is to have an effective and efficient political machine to work with. Currently, the crafts can be said to be composed of different parts from different manufacturers, some of them not fitting properly. Many strange bed fellows had come together solely to wrest power from a dilapidating establishment.

Only a few days ago some election victors in the establishment party, the People Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the victorious opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).The message is clear. In this cross-over, there is no question of political ideology. It is all a question of avoiding being in the Opposition. How will the motley crowd be blended into one organic whole?

And at what cost in terms of the demands on the energy and health of a 76-year-old President?

There are many other energy and health zappers to worry about before we suggest to the President how he can build his energy and health to ride the energy and health storms the demands of office may bring to him. Whenever I think about how feeble an aging human body may become under whatever stress, I always remember the lamentations of former U.S. President Bill Clinton.  Today, he looks more than 20 calendar years older than his biological age. While in office, he suffered blockages in his heart arteries which subjected him to coronary artery bypass surgery. That meant the blood vessels which supply blood to his heart were so blocked that his heart was not receiving enough blood to keep it alive and functioning properly that a new supply route had to be opened up in the surgical room. Bill Clinton was later to lament after leaving office that he never really took care of his health while he was president. He had no time for real food or, better still, organic  foods, subsisted largely on meat pie, hot dog and other white flour fast foods most probably washed down with sodas (soft drinks), that speaks volumes about the home front. Luckily for the incoming president Buhari, he has a home front wife of the ilk of the wife of current U.S President Mubarak Obama. Mrs Obama cut a picture, different from Mrs. Hillary Clinton’s in the White House. She converted some of the loans to gardens where she farmed organic crops and herbs for her family meals. She made them pilot or experimental farms for high school children in the neighbourhood. The idea was that, if they got hooked to the principles of organic foods and took the news to their families, the deadly Standard American Diet (SAD) would be exchanged for live health building foods and, over sometime the health of Americans would improve. Gen. Buhari’s wife resembles Mrs. Obama in some order respects. She is not obstrusive or domineering, does not stand before her husband as a bouncer running mate and offers to him that wifely content missing in many of todays wives. She should therefore in this respect see his health, and not any spoils of office, as her first priority. I suspect the challenges Gen. Buhari’s mental and physical health would fail in the first year of his Administration are five pronged, namely:

    •Creation of four millions jobs

•Stabilisations of non-stop electricity supply nationwide

•Funding of free education from primary school to the University, and

    •An anti-corruption crusade .

•Security, which may involve depoliticising the Armed Forces and making them more professional. These were some of his foreshore election campaignpromises anchored on the voter’s change expectations. If only to prove the point that he hasn’t been seeking to be the president merely for the purpose of being so-called, Gen. Buhari  (rtd) is expcted to drive himself and the State machinery towards achieving these promises. For a man over seventy calendar years of age, his dream will definitely take its toll on physical and mental health. Among other exertions of energy and health, it would involve thinking more than he now does, sleeping less than he now does, becoming more agitated than he now does and, perhaps, exercising less and having less time than now for leisure.

    Buhari and Us

any of us can see ourselves in the President Buhari picture we are painting. We sleep late, wake early, rush through meals, have many files to attend to, do not exercise well enough, hardly walk, are driven in cars from home to the office and back, attend long meetings, bear far too many things in the brain than we probably should, disarrange our sleep mechanism and can hardly sleep without the help of sleeping pills which suppress, our brains rather than nourish them before we can catch little sleep, suffer from backache because of long periods of sitting, constipation, poor posture, arthritis or prostate enlargement or prostate cancer. There are far too many health challenges of overwork, especially in old age, that can visit an aging person than this page can list. They are all part of the aging process compounded by the busy-bee lifestyle.

    The Aging Process

here is nothing which comes into being that will not, someday, pass away.

Thus, we are born, mature, flower, wilt and pass away some day. It is a fulfillment of natural laws. We see it in the Law of Motion, which compels everything to be on the move. It is inherent, also, in the law of the cycle by which everything in motion must return to its starting point. It partakes as well in the law of Development. For humans, the four temperaments exhibited by our bodies enable us, from time to time, to know where and how we stand on the Aging Scale. The temperaments denote, also, the four seasons in a person’s life:

    The temperaments

    These are:

    •Sanguine

    •Melancholy

    •Choleric and

    •Phlegmatic.

One dovetails into another, like morning of the day into afternoon or evening into night. We may also observe it in the weather.

Sanguine life is carefree life. A child does not appreciate the import of earthly life. He or she fed and clothed by his or her parents who bears his or her care. In Melancholy, the child arrives, figuratively speaking, at the beach of the expansive sea of earthly existence. He sees all the struggles for survival in this wild sea. Most of the forms he beholds are ugly and sickening. For a while, he is motionless. Then, in Choleric life, he is sucked into this ocean or plunges into it as of necessity to eke his livelihood. This is the rat race stage of earthly existence when the one who has arrived there must begin to build his estate, preparing for a future when, sapped of energy or health, he becomes helpless and falls upon the treasures he has stockpiled in choleric years for sustenance.  The phlegmatic years are those of weak bones, failing memory, energy loss, sagging health, the years of wilting which presage passing away. In this age, there are reminisces of the sanguine, melancholy and choleric years, of lamentations of how choleric people are ruining the good or great legacies. Ones generation begun ethed to them. It is the little remembered that the phlegmatic generation ahead  of one’s choleric generation said the same about that choleric generation.

Some people are luckier than others in that they enjoy a choleric, that is active,  life with a longer span than others did.

The secrets are in the activities of the spirit and the radiations of the blood. Man is not bone and flesh but a human spirit who inhabits the physical body. These spirit gives rise to the blood and its circulation. It controls the body through the blood. That is why, like the finger print, each person’s blood is like his or her own identity card. This dawn more on man as his knowledge expands of the so-called mystery of the blood. The blood radiation depends on its composition from the nurture of the physical body, and from the glow of the indwelling human spirit.

When the spirit is good natured and spiritually (not religiously) active constant recomposition of the blood through dietary nurture supports healthy blood radiation as well.

Some people are lucky to be choleric right into their seventies or even beyond it. Some others become phlegmatic in their fifties. A President should be choleric. Where the choleric temperament is ebbing, a near phlegmatic President may still copy a choleric posture in public action if he surrounds his thinking machine with choleric persons. Who will help to sharpen his thoughts and electrify his actions.

The anti-aging health tips which are about to follow their origins from anti-aging research world-wide especially in Europe and the united states. They are ably reported in two books, I cherish in my library. One, titled STOP AGING NOW, was written by JEAN, CARPER with the subtitle: based on cutting-edge research revealing the amazing anti-aging powers of supplements, herbs and the book is described as the “authoritative new York times best seller.”

The other book , written by JUDU LINDBERG MCFARLAND with LAURA GLADY’S MCFARLAND, is tittled AGING WITHOUT GROWING OLD. The question they pose regarding our health  and why we grow old at all, sometimes so rapidly to our amazement, are ably answered. They should be of help to the President-elect and every-one else who wishes to stay young irrespective of the aging process. There is no doubt that the aging process overwhelms us when we are sad, damaging the biochemistry of our bodies, when we feed our bodies with junk food which is outside the plan of God’s creation as Dr (Rev) George Malchmus has shown in his HALLELUHAH ACRES, a book devoted to foods which helped him to conquer not only the dreaded cancer  but other ailments as well. There is no doubt as well that we live in a poisoned environment, eating poisoned food, drinking poisoned water, breathing poisoned air and failing to adequately support our organs of detoxification or anti-poison organs with the right diet. Which mother nature provides us for them to do their work well. As we are likely to find in anti-aging research, which in some cases has extended the lifespan of some animal species by as many as five times or more, giving humans the prospects of living up to 150 years, the major cause of physical and mental deterioration is a dangerous poison called the free radical. It is an unbalanced and “insane” molecule which attacks every cell of the body. It is in the air, food and water we ingest, it is in our stool.

Our body produces it from the food we eat, the air we breathe, or and water we ingest, even if it is not present in them by the time we consume them. It is the waste of anything we ingest which has to be eliminated through breathing, urination, sweating and defecation. Many of us do not use up to 50 per cent capacity of our lungs when we breathe. That means we do not aerate the body well enough for robust health, and we do not expel enough of the waste products of the air we inhale, such as carbon dioxide, a reason it concentrates in the blood, prostate enlargement or swellings in the legs tell us the kidneys may not be working well, making us retain poisons which the urine should have flushed out. And many of us do not exercise enough to help the skin eliminate poison through sweating. At seventy-something we do not easily, remember names, places or dates easily, stay more indoors than outdoor, lose the zest for life, consume all sorts of  pharmaceutical drugs to suppress all  suits of symptoms instead of removing them at the root with food or herbs.

Free Radicals: Judy Linberg Mcfarland says: “A free radical is a molecule that has lost a vital piece of itself- one of its electrically charged electrons that normally orbits in pairs. To restore balance, the free radical frantically tries to steal an electron from a nearby molecule or give away its unpaired electron. In doing so, it wreaks molecular havoc, careening into protein, fat, and the genetic DNA of cells, disfiguring and correding them . If the target is fat, the radical can set off widely destructive chain reactions that break down membranes, leaving cells to disintegrate. If it radicalise into proteins, it can destroy the cells ability to function. If it hits DNA, it can cause mutations that incite cells to aberrant behavior. Overtime, free radical damage leaves the body aged and diseased.”

Free radicals are root causes of breast tissue damage and cancer. When the brain is over used it generates free radical which, if unchecked, cause mental deterioration, including memory lose, short attention spans, sleep disorders or even brain tumors. The brain, like the breast, is a fatty tissue and subject to free radical damage, and Judy McFarland says, quoting anti-aging researchers, is an analogy, says Judy Macfalard. Bruce No Ames, Ph.D., university of California at Berkeley likens the production of free radicals to the smoke and soot by-products produced by wood-burning fireplace to extend the analogy further, the waste of a trod burning fire is easily channel away from your home’s interior by your fire place chimney, but in the body, free radical by-products are not so easily eliminated. Certain free radical scavengers must help remove the harmful from radicals from the body.

r Anes, quoted by Judy Mcfarland, says it is true we need some doses of free radicals to live, such as in deployment by the immune system against disease germs, but too much of them, when we do not have enough free radical scavengers, irradiate us. At “low levels all the time” he says: “they grind us down.” Dr Ames says every cell is bombanded by 10,000  oxidative hits, “every day by free radicals. The damage is immediately repaired in many cases.” “The point to be made of cause,” says Mcfarland,  “is that even if we live in a pure environment, our human bodies would produce free oxygen radicals there simply is no way to avoid their presence within the body. Many free radicals are produced in our personal environment such as sunlight, smog, high attitude, exposure to x-ray, toxins in food and water, pollen, ozone, mould and dust, and so forth. We can’t avoid free radicals. They are everywhere. What we can do is attempt to diminish their impact on the body. She says free radical damage is responsible for such degenerative disease’s as arthritis,” long gehirgs disease, alzheiner’s disease, some types of cancer, heart attack, hardening of the arteries, parkinson’s disease, central cerebral vascular changes that we know as selemity and many others.” Jean carper , whose book, “Stop aging now”, like Judy Mcfarland’s  “Aging without groowing old”, I recommend for your library, says, of free radicals:

“Free radicals damage cells, causing aging. Anti-oxidants help block aging. Once you have an intellectual grip on that, the rest is clear… find them, use them, stop aging, stay young, live longer. There are more anti-aging agents in the universe than you could ever dream of and probably more than science can discover in the next century.

  • Anti-aging tips for Buhari in change era (1)

All things being equal, as economists say, former Military Head of State Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) should succeed President GoodLuck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan on May 29. The choice of this date as a political succession day for Nigeria’s president, governors and parliaments may have petty origins on the surface, but, deep down, plugs into an important date in the universe. Traditionally since independent on October 1,  1960, this October day in which British colonialists transferred sovereignty to Nigerians has been Nigeria’s political transition day until the switch to May 1 now described as Democracy Day. In some spiritual circles world-wide, may 29 regarded as the peak of Pentecost, the outpouring of power from the Holy Spirit for the maintenance of creation.

Christians recognise Pentecost as a one-off event when disciples of the Lord Jesus received power from on High after his earthly departure. But, say the spiritual circle aforementioned, Pentecost happens every year.

From the highest planes of the spiritual realms, power surges downwards into creation like blood pumped out by the heart, for the maintenance and strengthening of everything which absorbs it. The regeneration observed in the spring season has been linked to the outpouring. So has the energising of human character and deeds, for good or ill. For this power, like electricity or atomic energy, is neutral, pliable into any form for which the “potter” bears personal responsibility.

Commenting on this subject a few years ago, this column suggested many riots which have occurred in Nigeria’s history in this season, including the onset of Nigeria’s Biafra civil war (1967-70) on May 27, may have been due to the forging of this power into negative ends.

For it merely helps to actualise inherent volition. Ideally, the inherent volition of man should be the transformation of earth-life into paradise-like beauty. But since his soul filled with poison, his use of this power can only be for ignoble ends.

As we stand in the era of change, which president-elect Buhari promised in his election campaigns, our prayer is that he be clarified about these matters, see himself as an upbuilding tool in the hands of his creator, connect and attach to Him, act only under His guidance, open himself to the helping rays of the power of Pentecost which transcend religious frontiers and, as Nigeria’s leader of the moment lead us to loftier heights.

If he does this, change would have meaning, significance and impact in our lives.

    Road to change

The journey will be rough, we shouldn’t deceive ourselves. For the last thing many people desire and resist is change. And is because the spirit, tenant in the physical body we all legs about in, is in deep slumber.

When I was 40, in 1990, I took one day off work and traveled to Abeokuta, Ogun State to re-connect with the radiations of the town in which I grew up. I found, to my shock that if I was blindfolded, I would on my own find my way from the high on which I parked my car, to St. Andrews Primary School, Ileara, where, thanks to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free Primary School education project, I began school in January 1956, the year Chief Awolowo began free education in Western Region. My father was a colonial policeman and may have been unable to afford the bill. Nothing has changed in the environment between 1950 and 1990. The neighborhood was blighted.

Even the once lushful lawn of the parade ground of Ibarra police barracks where a reception was held for Queen Elizabeth II in 1956 had become patched and blighted.

Since the spirit forms the physical environment where it exists, it can be assumed that the state of the environment is the state of the spirit. Nigeria is replete with stories of successful people hesitant to build houses or make other investments in their villages out of fear that they may be killed.

    Aging Buhari

There is no doubt that, at over 70, Gen. Buhari (rtd) is aging and would require bouncing health and energy to pull through his promises of four million jobs in one year, free education at all levels of schooling, steadying  electricity all day long, curb of corruption, improvement of security and professionalism in the military, among many others. Add to these subtitle picture of voting patterns in the presidential election of March 28 which has led many people to conclude that wounds of the 1967 to 1970 Biafran war are far from healed. Thus manifested in grave ethnic divisions that need to be addressed.

    Ethic division.

The voting pattern was the geography of the biafran war… the Eastern- Region (South- East and South- South) pitched against the North and the West. Some political observers blame it all on the  South–West. Their thesis is that nowhere in history does the victor nation in a war relinquish power to the loser.

They site Germany and Japan as examples. Both nations lost the second world war to Britain. The United States, France and the Soviet Union (now Russian). Till this day both nations are forbidden to manufacture offensive military weapons. Besides, foreign troops from the victor nations except perhaps China are stationed in Germany and Japan to monitor them. By this logic, Dr Ebele Goodluck Jonathan should not have become Nigeria’s President after President YarA’dua’s death midterm in office.

The North opposed his ascension. But the South–West, backing constitutionalism, literally made him President. It is instructive that the bitter struggle between the North and the South–West, Dr Ebele Jonathan, as Vice-President, kept mute, like the South-East and the South-South regions. With victory achieved for Jonathan in both the left over two years of YarA’dua’s tenure and, later, a full four years term for himself, President Jonathan would display open pathological hatred for the South-West vengeance against the North. He was to describe South-Western as a pack of rascals”,  re-engage in puletic office known foes of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the South-West, who set the stage for Dr Ebele Jonathan, as governor of Bayelsa State, to become Vice President of the YarA’dua Presidency.

The South-West was diminished in key appointments as well. As for the North, President Jonathan adopted a carrot and stick approach. The carrot was key appointments, especially in the security terrain. The stick  came in the form of folding arms pretending to have no immediate solution for the Boko Haram insurgency, before which the well-respected Nigerian military would appear to flee. President Jonathan said he was not a “general”, in response to call that he engage the insurgents. Some critics of his Administration say the plot was to let a North –on-North war weaken the North for an easy political rout during the next Presidential election.

This would be facilitated by a sudden and victorious military assault as Boko Haram which would position President Jonathan as a tie-President who was latter left alone for another term. But it would seem the agenda, if there was one, miscalculated politically that the North and South-West, sworn political enemies since 1959, could offer a common political front in Nigerian history, and even fracture fortresses of the ruling People Democratic Party (PDP). That the North/South-West coalition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was able to defeat President Jonathan was not just a question of the game of numbers but more of intellectual sagacity.

While President Jonathan and the PDP were busy trying to destroy the person and image of Gen. Buhari (rtd) and image of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a master architect of the APC, the APC was busy abroad internationalising the coming election.  They knew the APC would win the polls and the PDP would attempt  to rig them and deploy soldiers to suppress protests. They were dead right in what happened in Port Harcourt and Abia State, among other discomfitures of the elections.

Many people have said President Jonathan played the Statesman by unconditionally accepting defeat, a feat, it is said, for an incumbent African President. Somehow I do not share this view. I believe the President merely succumbed to international pressure reigned against him and accepted a negotiated settlement for a soft landing in which he would not be probed personally.

There is a veiled reference to this in Gen. Buhari’s reply to President Jonathan’s congratulatory message in which the President–elect promised that the President would be treated with “respect” and “understanding”.

We must now proceed from the geography of the presidential election to the psychological war inflicted ethnic injuries which a Buhari administration should tackle, which may sap his energy and for which, in the coming series of this column, it would be shown how again people like him can make themselves biologically younger than their calendar or calendaric ages and fulfil all their tasks as if they are young people and without a scratch or dent in their health

    Ethnic war injuries

    The South–East  has a grouse with the (1) North (2) South–West and (3) parts of the South–South.

    The North

Hundreds of thousands of igbos were killed genocidically in the North in 1966 which security forces, either helplessly or in full support, looked the other way. Naturally Igbos fled eastwards, to their homeland. It was a clear lesson that the generosity or warmness of a host land, not withstanding, there is no place on this earth that is a NO MAN’S LAND. It is better to invest the fruits of adventure back home and not seek to make a home of a host land.

Even Igbo soldiers in the Nigeria army returned home after skirmishes in the barracks in which some of them were killed by Northern soldiers. The mood in the East was for a breakaway from Nigeria. Lt. Col Yakubu Gowon, Head of State of Nigeria at 32, found this a daunting challenge. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of thought in the West, made the remarkable Statement: “If by commission or omission the East is allowed to go, the West will also follow.” The situation called for mediation and reconciliation. Ghana threw its doors open to Nigeria. All the regions met in Aburi, Ghana, Where Lt. Col Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, military governor of the Eastern regions, as opposed to federation, and Lt. Col. Gowon agreed. Lt. Col. Gowon rejected the agreement on his return to Nigeria, when the implications were explained to him. As was to be expected, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu stuck to his guns, stating ON ABURI WE STAND. Chief Awolowo was to head for the East for a reconciliation meeting. It was at this meeting that the East said Chief Awolowo promised the East that, in the event of war between the East and the North, the West would fight in the side of the East.

    The West

This thinking dominates the thinking of the average man and woman in the East today, and explains why the East persists in its traditional opposition to anything originating from the West, however good or beneficial to the East, and why the East would wish the West dismantled and its star city, Lagos, regarded as a no man’s land.

Yet Chief Awolowo, in post-war speeches and in the books, have denied making  such a promise at the meeting with Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu. A tape of the meeting recovered by Federal troops in Enugu following the fall of the capital city, and reviewed by the Nigerian Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Gen. Gowon (as he later became) found no such promise. Even Odumegwu Ojukwu after his return from exile did not insist such a promise was made.

The gap in this Eastern thinking and reality has led scholars to conclude that a promise of support from the West for secession by the East must have been invented by pro-seccession and pro-war intelligentia in the East to galvanise the population for a war of seccession.

    Incapacitation of the West

The bitterness in the East over the West fighting alongside the North during the Biafra War takes no account of how the co-alition Federal government of the East (NCNC) and the North (NPC) emasculated the West in the civil service and the Armed forces, excused the Mid-West region (later called Bendel State, now Edo and Delta State) from the West as a part of that emasculation, encourage break up of the Action Group (AG), government party in the West, and sent the leader of the region, Chief Awolowo, to 10 years imprisonment on charges that he plotted to overthrow the NPC/NCNC Federal government. Reasonable people should have asked: how would Chief Awolowo have done this when his Yoruba kinsmen were little present in the Army under the said emasculation? An evidence of the emasculation presents itself in the story of Brigadier Ogundipe. After the killing of Maj. Gen. J.T.U. Aguiyi Ironsi, an Igbo, who was the Head of State of Nigeria, in the counter coup of July 1966, Brig. Ogundipe was the most senior Nigerian Army officer around. But when he commanded a northern private, the latter declined to obey until the head received instruction from a northern officer. Brig. Ogundipe had no Yoruba soldiers to enforce his order. So, like Igbo officers, he took refuge… in a naval ship commanded by a fellow Yoruba, who took him to England. With this kind of scenario, how did the East expect the West to fight a war. In any case, northerners controlled all the army barracks which rank up the West.

In Lagos, there were Myong Barracks, Abalti Barracks, Bonny Camp, Doddan Barracks, Ojoo Cantonement and Ikeja Cantonement. There were army garrisons in Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode and other towns. In any case, the Yoruba are guided by the wisdom of the proverb of the elders that “ti owo omode ko ba ba ida, kii bere iku to pa baba re”, that means until he has firmly gripped the handle of the sword, a child doesn’t seek vengeance against the killers of his father.

In the East at the time, Lt. Col. Banjo, a Yoruba, was in the custody of Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu. Lt. Col. Banjo was one of the four officers who staged the first coup in January 1966. They handed over to Gen. Ironsi when the coup failed. Banjo and Ifeajuna were released by Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu to work with him. When it would appear the West was not forth coming in striking a military blow, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu decided on an invasion of Lagos from across the Niger through Benin. Banjo and Ifeajuna objected. He had them executed. Biafran troops from Onitsha crossed to Asaba and seized Bendel State which they renamed Republic of Benin.

From Benin, they moved towards Lagos but were stopped at Ore by troops commanded by Maj. Gen. Muritala Muhammed. Had Biafran troops succeeded, it was possible a Republic of Oduduwa would have been declared. But many people in the West doubt this intention.

Why, they wonder, did Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu not make the East the theatre of war by invading the North through the East-North border. Why force a war on the defenceless West? In any case, what were the justifications for the air bombings of a supposedly friendly or neutral Lagos?
