Defence Minister, Anyim, Arewa Think Tank hail Tinubu’s efforts against insecurity

Prominent Nigerian leaders, including Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, former Senate President, Senator Pius Anyim, and Convener of the Arewa Think Tank (ATT), Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, have lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its determination to end insecurity and reposition the economy.

They spoke in Kaduna at a public lecture organised by the Arewa Think Tank to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, themed “65 Years of Nigeria’s Independence: The Journey So Far with the Renewed Hope Agenda in View.”

The Defence Minister said insecurity in the North has considerably reduced under the Tinubu administration, citing improved safety along major highways and the return of farmers to their fields in previously troubled areas.

“We from the North have been telling our people that President Bola Tinubu has been part and parcel of us. I have been walking into his bedroom while Lagosians keep waiting for him until he comes out. He is a man of respect and honour, truly the Asiwaju of Nigeria, and his handshake cuts across the country,” he said.

“This government is our government; Asiwaju is our man. Today, banditry attacks have reduced in the North. Most of us from Kaduna State can testify that farmers have returned to their farms in Birnin Gwari, people now go to the market safely, and there are no more attacks along the Zaria–Funtua–Gusau axis. We are not saying insecurity is completely over, but we are almost there,” he added.

Former Senate President Pius Anyim commended President Tinubu for deepening citizens’ engagement and promoting accountability in governance.

“I want to say that wherever and whenever Nigeria is being celebrated, I will be there and proud to be part of it,” he said. “This event is to further strengthen citizens’ engagement with the government on key policies and programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda. That agenda represents the totality of this administration’s vision and action plan.”

Anyim emphasised that citizen engagement is critical to the success of every government policy, saying, “It is through such interaction that government can secure the understanding and support of citizens. I commend this initiative as one way to strengthen democracy and stabilise our politics. Only an accountable government engages its people, and by doing this, President Tinubu is proving his commitment to transparency.”

In his address, Convener of the Arewa Think Tank and organiser of the event, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, said Nigeria remains a resilient nation despite its challenges.

He insisted that Nigeria is not a failed state, noting that the tough economic reforms introduced by President Tinubu are necessary steps to reposition the economy for sustainable growth.

“Tinubu is the man that will take this country to the promised land,” Yakubu declared. “What we are witnessing today is fiscal discipline in our economy. Given time, the impact of these reforms, especially in agriculture and the oil sector, will directly benefit ordinary Nigerians and farmers.”

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against divisive narratives aimed at destabilising the country, saying: “As we celebrate our independence anniversary, we must not allow the enemies of progress to draw us back. Despite our challenges, Nigeria is not a failed state.”

    • Ex-Senate President visits Tinubu after defecting to APC
    • Uzodimma, Nwifuru: he’s an asset

Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim yesterday said all hands should be on deck to navigate the country out of the turbulent economic period.

According to him, he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) not because he is looking for a job but to contribute his quota to the development of the country.

He spoke at the Aso Villa after visiting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He was at the Presidential Villa along with Governors Hope Uzodimma (Imo) and his Ebonyi home state Governor Francis Nwifuru.

Speaking on why he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, instead of contributing to development as an opposition party member, Anyim said: “Can you look back at the history of PDP and tell me how many leaders PDP has produced that had joined APC or another party at any particular point in time, it’s common. But importantly, I have a determination to be sure that the country moves on the right path and I should be available to contribute my quota.”

“Contributing quota does not necessarily mean to work, but to engender a conducive atmosphere for progress. I’m not looking for work, but there is need that given the challenges the country is facing today that we all need to put all the hands on deck to make the country move forward.”

Uzodimma noted that the coming of people like the former President of the Senate into the ruling APC, especially in the Southeast, which used to be a stronghold of the opposition PDP, was an indication that the APC government is doing well.

“We have started harvesting from it. If you recall, only few days ago, there was local government election in Ebonyi state. And in that election, it was like a one party movement. The entire local governments and councils were won by APC.

“So in the same manner, because democracy is about  the people, when the people are now unanimously agreeing that government is doing well, and a political party is doing well, and they’re all collapsing into that political party, what is remaining is to address the campaign of calumny, arising from the propaganda of the opposition, which most of us here are used to,” he said.

Nwifuru said Anyim is not a small fry and is not looking for food.

Asked how he felt that his state was turning into a one party state and if it was okay for democracy, Nwifuru said: “You asked how I feel, I’m very excited, and it’s a thing of joy to me that every big fish in my state, especially that of our nation, Ayim Pius Ayim, and so many other distinguished leaders have decided to join our party. And is part of the benefit, the dividends of democracy. We’ve been able to do well according to our own understanding and base on our own best judgment. And that is what is engineering a lot of them to join APC.”

A popular business mogul in the state, Dr. Gideon Osi, was given Illustrious Service Award.

A business woman and philanthropist, Rosemary Nwakego  Emmanuel, was given Industrious Woman of the Year Award.

Addressing the constituents, Kama, who described culture as lifeblood of any society, said the aim of staging the event was to promote peace and unity in the community.

“Culture is said to be the lifeblood of any thriving society, and it’s best expressed in the way we tell our stories, celebrate and entertain ourselves. It helps us remember the past and cast imagination on the future. Our cultural expression helps define who we are, and helps the world see us through our own eyes.

“One of my primary focuses as your representative is to promote peace and unity among ourselves. Ohanivo Cultural Carnival, designed to showcase our rich and diverse cultural heritage, is one of the means of promoting unity and peaceful coexistence at Ohaozara/Onicha/lvo Federal Constituency and Ebonyi State.

“Undoubtedly, no meaningful and measurable growth and progress can be achieved in the midst of crisis, chaos, bickering and disunity.

“As a people, we’ve come a long way. From 1976 through 1996, we existed as one indivisible Ohaozara Local Government (now referred to as Old Ohaozara). The 1996 political expansion that split us into Ohaozara, Onicha and lvo local governments couldn’t divide us as it brought us into the same Ohaozara/Onicha/lvo Federal Constituency and we’ve continued to coexist peacefully.

“Therefore, there’s now the need to make a unique definition of who we are through our culture, our way of life and tell our stories in our own unique way. This is what this carnival stands for and promotes.

“This carnival is expected to serve as a unifying symbol for our people, a reminder that we’re one indivisible people,” he said.

Anyim to Fed Govt: rename Reps wing of National Assembly after Na’Abba

    • Nwuche, Oduyoye mourn ex-Speaker

A former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim has urged the Federal Government to rename the House of Representatives wing of the National Assembly Complex after the late Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba.

Anyim, who is also a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said this yesterday in a tribute to the late Na’Abba.

The ex-Senate President described Na’Abba’s death as a national tragedy and a setback to Nigeria’s democratic progress.

He noted that the late Speaker’s former colleagues, who were presiding officers of the Fourth National Assembly, had met last week and planned to pool resources together to fly him abroad for further treatment.

Anyim, who recalled his working relationship and camaraderie with the departed Speaker, said he worked with him to set many of the structures of the legislature, which was just being re-established after 16 years of military rule.

He said: “On December 19, 2023, the former presiding officers of the National Assembly met and decided that we should all meet the next day at the National Hospital (in Abuja) to review the situation of our former colleague and see how we could all contribute in any way to his speedy recovery.

“We did convene and decided that as soon as he was stabilised, every plan should be expedited to transfer him abroad for further medical assistance.

“Sadly, on December 27, 2023, the tragic news of his death broke, leaving little time to seek additional medical assistance. Ghali’s death is a national tragedy and a setback to our democratic progress.

“Today, my associate, my friend and my brother, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, is no more. I lost a friend, the nation lost a patriot, and his family lost a loving and caring father. But God receives in heaven an honest and compassionate soul.”

  • Sen. Yarima, Anyim keep mum after meeting with Buhari

Sen. Ahmed Sani-Yarima of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Zamfara West, on Friday in Abuja, met behind closed door with President Muhammadu Buhari at Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Senator, who is serving his third term at the National Assembly, declined comment on the outcome of the meeting.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), however, gathered that the senator updated the president on security and political developments in Zamfara.

NAN observed that prior to the meeting between the president and Sani-Yarima, Sen. Kabiru Marafa, representing Zamfara Central, had held similar meeting with President Buhari.

Marafa, had told State House correspondents that he updated President Buhari on the failed APC governorship primary in Zamfara, and alleged that the state governor, Abdul aziz Yari, had lost the support of people of the state.

He described as “illegal and irresponsible’’ the action of the governor after the announcement of the cancellation of the primary by the Prof. Abubakar Faki-led APC Zamfara Governorship Primaries Committee.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had also dissolved the party executives at all levels in Zamfara, and fixed Oct. 6 and 7 for the conduct of fresh governorship, senatorial and house of representatives primaries in the state.

Mr Yekini Nabena, the APC acting National Publicity in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said by the decision, all supposed party factions in Zamfara stands dissolved.

He added that the APC NWC-inaugurated committee for Zamfara are to conduct the Governorship and Legislative primaries in the State.

He stressed that the Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Yari and the dissolved state executives should not interfere in the primary elections.

  • How my nomination as monarch divided Anyim, Ajimobi, others —Osun monarch Oba Abolarin

Youthful looking traditional ruler of Oke Ila Orangun Osun State, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, is a modern day monarch in every sense of the word. He had trained as a lawyer and built a career in the legal profession before he became the Personal Assistant on Political Affairs to former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim. Then he got a call from his kinsmen in Ila Orangun to return home and become their monarch. The self-confessed lover of R&B music told PAUL UKPABIO the events that culminated in his emergence as a royal father, why he has not given up on style and why he still teaches History and Government in secondary school even as a monarch.

Could you recall where you were the day you learnt that you would become the next traditional ruler of Oke-Ila Orangun?

I was in Abuja, working as the Personal Assistant on Political Affairs to the then Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim. The news came to me as a shock because it was the last thing on my mind. As a matter of fact, I never thought that such a thing could happen to me in this lifetime.

But you knew all along that you are from a royal family?

That is true. But it just didn’t come to mind. It is not something that I remembered or had in mind, especially for someone like me who was already set for leadership at the national level in the country.

What were the first thoughts that came to your mind?

They were difficult thoughts. I didn’t know where to start from because there were so many things that came to mind. The call was sudden.

What was the immediate reaction of your immediate family?

For a whole year, the reaction was not so pleasant because it was unexpected. I became hypertensive. There was unhappiness in my nuclear family and even my extended family. My mom too was not in tune with it until after a long time.

    But why so?

We were not prepared for it. I had prepared for leadership and my family knew that, but not at the traditional level. But then, what will be, will be. Leadership at any level is sacrifice, tolerance and service.

Did your family later have a change of mind?

Yes, but that was after a long period time. And I must confess that it led to one or two negative things in the family, which I do not readily discuss. But it is all the sacrifice for being on the throne.

What happened immediately you got the news?

I had to move immediately. But it was a different experience entirely for my family. I never liked a dull environment. I had always been an active person in terms of activism and participation in national affairs. I did not go to school to become a monarch. I didn’t even wish it for myself. I rejected it in my heart, but again, the pressure started to mount. My predecessor had joined his ancestors and it was the turn of my family to present a candidate for the Orangun of Oke Ila. Eventually, I became the king.

I was someone who was looking to serve at a different level, but here was another service that I was called upon to take on. What I have realised about life is that you don’t run away from service, despite the fact that I didn’t wish it for myself.

    Where did you grow up?

I was born and bred in Ibadan. I had never spent seven days at a stretch in Oke-Ila before I became the king. It was a different kettle of fish when I got here as the king.

So after a decade as the royal father, how would you describe the journey?

I will actually be 12 years on the throne in December of this year. Like I said earlier, service is service. If you are ordained by God to actively shape people’s destinies, you should be happy. I thank God for the opportunity because I have found myself in a place where I change the attitude of a people, mould and re-direct their future, using the past to build a template for the future. It is a wonderful experience.

But again, it is not all a bed of roses in terms of followership. It is difficult for people to change their erstwhile patterns of life. I have realised that it has to be gradual. Development itself is gradual. But all said and done, I am happy doing what I am doing.

While you were working in Abuja, was becoming a full blown politician on your mind?

Not really. I was not in politics. I was working as a professional lawyer. However, I was very close to the political class by virtue of my training as a political scientist, a scholar of International Relations and a lawyer who was interested in the development of the parliament. I was a lobbyist and a legislative attorney. I had the choice to mingle with the political class and the people who were interested in shaping the polity.

Didn’t some of your friends think that going to Oke Ila to become the Oba would be a waste of your educational attainments?

Yes, a lot of my friends in the political class thought so. The then Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, who was my boss, never liked the idea. The present Minister of National Planning too, did not like the idea. But in fairness, there were some other people who I also consulted in Abuja, who fell in love with it and said that service at any level is service. That it is not only when I stay in Abuja, New York, Toronto or Canada that I can be of service to the people. They said being at Oke-Ila would also be a service to the people. Some of the people who urged me on were Senator Ajimobi, the present Governor of Oyo state, the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University who later became a Senator and other well experienced scholars of the bible said it is important for people like me to be in leadership at the traditional level so that we can gradually re-construct the institution for the good of the people.

After 12 years as a traditional ruler, what do you think of the traditional institution?

I think it is a great institution to develop our people in social, political and economic areas. We are the grassroots people. A whole lot of us have left our people for too long in terms of provision of leadership. When I got here, I found that it is a place where I have to think of development from the bottom and not from the top.

As one who has seen the world and had developed a cosmopolitan taste to comfortably resettle in Oke-Ila means that there must be something unique about the place. What is the unique thing about Oke-Ila?

Man itself, the epicentre of development even in his rustic form, is an attraction here. And to change the mentality of the people is tough and challenging. But the Yoruba say that ibi t’o ba le la n b’omokunrin (it is in tough situations that you find the real man). It is challenging. But to the glory of God, we are here.

You have always been a man of style. Has life in the palace affected your sense of style?

I have been a lawyer. But even before becoming a lawyer, I did not joke with style and looking good. I’ve kept my style. I enjoy looking good, and as a Yoruba monarch, I have a sense of responsibility to look good and project the advancement of the Yoruba culture and tradition in terms of style.

What vanities of life can you not be without even when you are in Oke Ila?

(Laughs) There are two important things that I do not joke with. I don’t joke with my sunglasses; it’s a Rayban, and my Aramis cologne, not only in Oke Ila but every other place that I am. These are two things I got used to early in life.

What part of the arts appeal to you?

I listen to all sorts of good music. I like R & B. I love the kind of music that my children are producing these days; they all make sense to me. I don’t joke with my son Davido’s music. There is beauty in our culture and there’s greatness in our language. The rustic nature of our Oke-Ila is beautiful; it is the most beautiful place in the world. There is waterfall, lush greenery; the environment is beautiful and lovely to be tapped into as a lucrative tourist destination. It is very good for rural tourism. A lot of our children do not even know what cocoa pod is.

We hear that you own a school and the students don’t pay school fees…

None of the students in my school pays a dime. The school is totally free. I beg people, friends to assist in one way or another to send the children to school. At the last count, we had 94 rural indigent students. And to the Glory of God, in the coming school year when we will be having children in SS2, we are going to have 114 in the school. It is a boarding school. What we are doing at Abolarin College is our humble contribution to the society. I actually teach in the school. I teach them Government and History because I am conscious of the fact that we want to raise great leaders among the poor.

It generally believed that a traditional ruler is entitled to as many wives. How have you managed to handle women who try to be your wife?

The choice is mine as a king or royal. It is a fundamental right of each soul to practice and do what he wants to do. I am okay with my Olori (wife). With the 114 projected students that I will be looking after, there is no way I will be able to consider having multiple Oloris. I cannot afford it. Culture is not static; it is dynamic. I am thinking of the future. I want a glorious future for the children around me. I want Nigeria, through these children, to be the best place in the world. It is doable. All hands should be on deck. The fear of children school fees has made me not to seek more Oloris.

  • Centenary project: Anyim, wife to account for N13.1b

Centenary project: Anyim, wife to account for N13.1b

Where is the over N13b cash raised for the Centenary Project?

This is part of the questions detectives are asking former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Anyim Pius Anyim and his wife.

Anyim, his wife, 20 firms and others are being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged fraud in the massive project.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is said to have disregarded the opinions of former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Bala Mohammed and  former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) on the project.

According to a document, which  our correspondent stumbled on, 37 investors subscribed to the project, which was floated to mark the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914 by the late Sir Frederick Lord Lugard, the first Governor-General of Nigeria.

    In all,  $80, 750,000 (N13, 162, 250,000 then) was paid by investors.

Precious Integrated Company Limited owned by Mrs. Anyim was given 5% equity worth N815m for rendering services in kind, according to a document The Nation stumbled on.

The land acquired for the project was 1, 264, 78 hectares and N1, 410, 178, 599.59 earmarked as compensation for 3,868  land owners, who got N1, 234, 747, 076, 000 paid as compensation; N697, 015, 863 is yet to be paid to land owners

The document said: “Anyim was the SGF and the coordinator of the Centenary City Project, which was meant to be  privately owned. Any interested investor was asked to pay $5million equity.

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan, through the then FCT Minister, approved the allocation of  1, 264, 78 hectares for the city. But the FCT used the allocation to acquire 5% equity in the city and the premium of the land was put at about N8billion.

“Investigation however revealed that the wife of the ex-SGF was allocated 5% equity(worth N815million) in the Centenary City Plc. Anyim’s wife owns Precious Integrated Limited, which is managing the shares.

“This company didn’t contribute in monetary terms but it was given 5% equity. When we invited Anyim’s wife and others, they said the company ran some services during the Centenary Celebration and these services were quantified and converted to $5million, which represents 5% equity.”

Anyim’s wife’s company  could not ascertain the services rendered. Besides, there was no agreement that the ‘so-called services’ would be converted to equity in the Centenary City Plc. The EFCC invited Anyim’s wife butshe could not explain the services offered the Federal Government. She was, however, granted bail.

“Some other firms that paid contributions for the Centenary City were firms that enjoyed contracts from the N58, 146,983,677.85 Ecological Funds in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during Anyim’s tenure,” the document said.

One of the 20  key firms was Foundation Years Limited, which alone received a net payment of N10,308,017,838.85 from the Ecological Funds between 2014 and 2015. The account opening  for the project had the address of the Office of the SGF.

“There are evidence of suspected fraud, money laundering and abuse of office which the former SGF, wife,  20 firms and  others should be investigated for,” according to the document.

On the Centenary City Project, the document indicated that 37 investors, including foreigners and overseas companies,  subscribed by paying $80, 750,000 (N13, 162, 250,000 then). The total land acquired for the project was 1, 264, 78 hectares and N1, 410, 178, 599.59 earmarked as compensation for 3,868  land owners.

“So far, N1, 234, 747, 076, 000 was paid as compensation, leaving a balance of N697, 015, 863 yet to be paid. We have been able to interact with some of the beneficiaries.

“Investigation showed that two-thirds of the companies/ individuals  paid cash of $5million each. But our team discovered that weeds have taken over the Centenary City.  We have invited top officials of Centenary City Plc for interaction on the whereabouts of the payments made by local and foreign investors and why the project has not taken off.

“The city was also granted the status of  a Free Trade Zone by Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority ( NEPZA). A former Managing Director of NEPZA was invited for questioning on how he came about the status, especially the criteria used. He said he acted on the directive of a former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment. At the appropriate time, we might interact with the ex-minister.

But EFCC detectives also discovered that the opinions of a former Minister of FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed and a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke(SAN) were ignored by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

They also detected that many people in  Jonathan government had personal interest in the project rather than national interest.

The document added:  “The ex-President (Jonathan) acting in complete disregard of the advisory opinions  of the former FCT Minister and ex-AGF approved the request for some components of the the project by Executive Fiat. There is a clear case of people in government  having personal interest and not national interest.

“To support this opinion, the government office became the identified  business address of the centenary with all the paraphernalia of official involvement for a purely private project.”

As at the time of filing this report, the former SGF, Anyim Pius Anyim has been released on bail by the EFCC. There are two sureties, but his passport has been seized and he is expected to report at the EFCC whenever he is invited.

    EFCC grills ex-SGF Anyim

Barely 24 hours after his arrest, detectives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday grilled a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, on how he allegedly laundered over N13billion out of N58, 146,983,677.85 in the Ecological Fund account.

He was also asked to explain how the ecological cash ended up in the accounts of about 15 companies linked with him.

A third peg of the interrogation bordered on why Anyim collected N520million from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on the eve of the 2015 general elections.

The reasons for the payment of the N520million were described by investigators as “unclear” as at the time of filing this report.

According to findings, Anyim, who was described as sober in custody, was said to have used two of the 15 companies to make several transfers to 37 entities.

It was learnt that the EFCC opted to arrest the ex-SGF after he failed to respond to a letter of invitation from the agency.

It was gathered that Anyim, who was aware of the EFCC trail on him in the last one year, had banked on a political solution to his travails.

His sudden attendance of a dinner in honour of President Muhammadu Buhari in Abakaliki on Tuesday was said to be one of the rapprochements he was banking on to stave off the EFCC’s arrest.

But top sources close to investigation, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, claimed that Anyim had a lot of garbage to clear based on his conduct in office.

One of the sources said Anyim, who was SGF from May 2011 to May 29, 2015, was under probe for alleged “false declaration of assets, abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering”.

The source said: “We have been conducting a covert investigation of Anyim in the last two years based on the alleged diversion and laundering of ecological funds.

“After reaching an appreciable stage, we invited Anyim, but he refused to honour the 10am appointment given to him. We had no choice than to effect his arrest at about noon on Thursday.

“We executed a search warrant in his house and we were able to recover some documents relevant to the investigation.”

Asked to be specific on the allegations against Anyim, another source added: There was the wild disbursement of cash from the SGF Ecological Fund account when Anyim was in charge. Most of the beneficiaries of the cash had nothing to do with ecological contracts.

“For instance, from May 2012 to May 2015, the SGF Ecological Fund Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria received an inflow of N58,146,983,677.85. From this fund, three of the companies linked to Anyim (Foundation Years, Obis Associate and Eldyke Engineering) received contracts worth over N13billion. Foundation Years alone received a net payment of N10,308,017,838.85 between 2014 and 2015.

“Curiously, on receiving the fund, Foundation Years and another Anyim’s company, Br-Kthru, made several transfers to 37 entities. Some of the organizations and individuals have no nexus at all with ecological issues. Investigators are probing the reasons behind the wild disbursement.

The source listed companies which Anyim allegedly used as fronts to “obtain contracts or laundered proceeds of the ecological funds contracts as Foundation Years Limited, Precious Integrated, Precious Petroleum, Mak & Mak, Chap Construction, Eldyke Engineering, Pryke Limited, Chipa Nigeria Limited, Prima A11 Limited, Pima International, Chanto Engineering, Ishiagu Microfinance Bank, Mulak Ventures, Vitro Engineering and Tip Top Nigeria.”

A third source said  Anyim has cases to answer in connection with alleged “false assets declaration, receiving N520m from the Office of the National Security Adviser on the eve of the 2015 general elections for unclear reasons and using proxies and companies in which he had interest to corner contracts from the Ecological Fund.

“So far, he is looking sober in our facility, but we have asked him to give account of the N13billion curious payments/ withdrawals/ transfers from the Ecological Fund account. We have conducted searches on the 15 firms, identified their accounts.

“More amazing was the transfer of the N520million to Anyim by ONSA on the eve of the 2015 general elections. He needs to account for this cash too.

“We have other strands of investigation, including the Centenary Project, alleged cornering of NDDC projects by cronies and alleged building of a 297-bed hotel within two years of becoming SGF. But we have not gone into these other allegations.

“Anyim knew all along that the EFCC had been on his trail. At a point, he wanted a political solution to his travails, but this has not worked for him. What is at stake has to do with public funds.”

All the efforts to contact Anyim or any of his aides for comment did not succeed as the mobile telephone numbers of virtually all the contacts were switched off.
