  • Employees accused of stealing

    Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, arraigned six employees, who allegedly stole raw pharmaceutical materials worth N30 million from a company.

    The police charged Ezekiel Effiong, 33, Olufemi Michael, 21, Tunde Olayiwola, 32, Lambo Kayode, 31, Blessing Balogun, 38 and Josephine Godwin, 38, with two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendants committed the offence in January at Ladipo, Mushin, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendants stole the raw materials belonging to Daily Need Industrial Group of Companies.

    Koti added that the management detected the theft following a tip-off.

    He said when the defendants were questioned, they did not denied it and they were handed over to the police.

    Magistrate M.O. Tanimola admitted the defendants to N200,000 bail each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    Tanimola said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on May 8.

  • Two impersonate policemen, steal wallet

     Two men – Babatunde Ishola, 57, and Teslim Ibikunle, 27 – were on Monday in Lagos brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged impersonation of policemen and stealing.

    Ishola, a resident of Agbado, Lagos, and Ibikunle who lives at Ijaye, Lagos, are facing trial for conspiracy, impersonation and stealing before Magistrate Mrs M.O Tanimola.

    Ishola pleaded guilty to the offences while Ibikunle pleaded not guilty.

    Tanimola ordered that Ishola should be kept in the Kirikiri Prisons pending review of the facts of the case and his sentencing.

    She granted Ibikunle N80, 000 bail with one surety who should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Aondohemba Koti, the accused committed the offences on Jan. 19 at Oshodi, Lagos.

    Koti said that the accused claimed to be policemen, demanded money from the complainant, Mr Olaide Akinbode, and dispossessed him of his wallet containing valuables.

    “The accused accosted the complainant, who is a commercial driver, demanding N10,000 and threatening to take him and his vehicle to a police station if he would not comply.

    “The complainant told them he did not have money, but they entered his vehicle and stole his wallet containing his automated teller machine card, voter card, Canadian passport and N15, 000.

    “The complainant raised alarm which attracted people. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the accused were fake.

    “They were handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

    The alleged offences contravened Sections 77, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 77 provides for three years’ imprisonment for impersonating a member of the armed forces or police, while Section 287 attracts three years’ jail term for stealing.

    The case was adjourned until February 6.

  • Barber ‘steals sister’s ATM card, withdraws N150,000’

    A barber, Muri Adebiyi, who allegedly stole his sister’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and withdrew N150,000 from her account, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates Court in Lagos.
    Adebiyi, 30, of Isolo Road, Mushin, is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing before Magistrate M.O Tanimola.
    Prosecuting Police Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendant committed the offence on August 20 at Mushin.
    Koti alleged that Adebiyi withdrew N150, 000 out of the N200,000 in his sister Mrs Kudirat Muhammed’s bank account without her consent.
    The court heard that Muhammed, who received debit alerts on her phone, rushed to the bank only to find that her brother was the thief.
    Koti said: “The complainant got debit alerts amounting to N150, 000 from her account and she immediately went to the bank to lodge a complaint.
    “The bank checked the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera recording and she watched her younger brother withdrawing her money.

    “The case was reported to the police and the defendant was arrested.”
    He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    But Adebiyi pleaded not guilty.
    Magistrate Tanimola granted him N50,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

  • Two conductors risk Seven years jail term for stealing bus

    Two conductors on Thursday pleaded guilty to stealing a Volkswagen Faragon Bus when they were arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Following their plea, the Magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, ordered that the duo to be remanded pending their sentence.

    One of the accused, Azeez Muiz, 19, lives at No. 41 Mosalashi St., Iponri area of Surulere, while Lukman Adedokun, 20, is of no fixed address.

    The duo are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecution alleged that the accused stole a Volkswagen Faragon Bus with Reg. No KSF866XA valued at N900,000, property of one Segun Ogunkoya.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Aondohemba Koti, told the court that the duo committed the offences on July 7 about 12.30 a.m. at No. 23 Alasalatu St., Mushin, Lagos.

    Koti said that the accused stole the bus while the complainant was fast asleep at his residence.

    “The complainant discovered that the accused had stolen the vehicle where it was parked after he came out to ease himself.

    “The accused were caught by the security guards in the area and handed them over to the police,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 287 prescribes seven-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates a two-year jail term for conspiracy.

    The magistrate fixed Aug. 10 for ruling.

  • Man scales church fence to steal N120, 000 microphone engine

    A 20-year-old computer operator, Gabriel Emmanuel, who allegedly scaled the fence of a church at night and stole N120,000 microphone engine, was on Thursday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, on a charge of stealing.

    Emmanuel, who resides at Akala, Mushin, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Tanimola said the surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Police Prosecutor Aondohemba Koti had told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 3 at Olateju, Mushin, Lagos.

    He said the accused stole a microphone engine valued at N120, 000, property of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Mushin.

    “The accused scaled the fence at night to gain access to the church premises and stole the engine.

    “As he was about to escape through the fence, the security guard sighted him and raised alarm, shouting ‘thief, thief’.

    “The accused was apprehended with the help of some members, who were sleeping in the church after the vigil.

    “The stolen item was recovered and the accused was handed over to the police,” Koti said.

    The offence violated Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the offence carries a penalty of three years imprisonment.

    Further hearing has been fixed for June 20.
