  • Man jailed five years for impersonation

    A 40-year-old man, Morgan Mohammed, was on Tuesday sentenced to five years imprisonment for impersonation and fraud by an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Magistrate T.O. Babalola convicted and sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge bordering on impersonation, stealing and obtaining under false pretence, brought against him by the police.

    Prosecuting Sergeant (Sgt.) Friday Inedu had told the court that the convict impersonated and presented himself as an officer of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), defrauding his victims of N454,000.

    He said the convict committed the offence between August and October last year at Agip Estate, Satelite Town, Lagos.

    Inedu said the convict paraded himself as an officer of the NCS to Mr. Ibewuike Emeka, Ogechi Ezeaka and Musa Dauda, and obtained N114,000 from them on the pretext of assisting them to secure a  job.

    He said Mohammed obtained N340,0000 from Vivian Nweke and Thelma Raji, with a promise to supply 30 bags of rice each to them, but failed to deliver same.

    The prosecutor also accused the convict of theft of some items valued at N113,000 from Raji.

    He said the complainants found out later that the convict had duped them and reported the matter to the police.

    He said Mohammed was subsequently arrested for questioning.

    When the charges were read, Mohammed pleaded guilty. He, however, begged for leniency.

    Delivering judgment, Magistrate Babalola sentenced the convict to five years imprisonment with an option to repay the N454,000 stolen from his victims.

    The convict was in addition sentenced to six months community service for the offence of impersonation.

    Woman in court for slicing neighbor’s head with razor

    The Police on Wednesday docked a 24-year-old woman, Mary Johnson, at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly slicing her neighbour’s head with a razor blade.

    Johnson, a resident of Okito Str., Ajegunle, Lagos is standing trial on a charge of assault.

    She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Police prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June, 23 at their tenement building.
    He alleged that accused assaulted her neighbour, Michael Idimoku, by beating him and used a razor blade to inflict a deep cut on his head.

    Kokoye said that a fight ensued between the duo, following an argument.

    He said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was consequently arrested.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes a three-year jail term for a convicted offender, if found guilty.

    The Senior Magistrate, M.A. Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Man in court for alleged laptop theft

    A 38-year-old man, Samuel Urhuogo, on Wednesday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of five laptops worth N505,000.

    Urhuogo, who resides at Festac Town area of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences with some others still at large on October 20 at Durbar Road, Amuwo Odofin, Festac Town, Lagos.

    Kokoye said that the accused broke into the shop of the complainant, one Ada Opurozor, and stole the laptops.

    He said the accused was caught by some security guards while he was trying to escape with his accomplices.

    “The accused was later handed over to the police, while accomplices escaped with the laptops,’’ he said.

    Kokoye said the offences contravened Sections 287, 309 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

    Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 309 prescribes seven years imprisonment for burglary.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty the charge.

    In his ruling, the Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until December 29, for mention.

    Guard in court over alleged theft in church

    Ifeanyi Ileka, 42-year-old security man, who allegedly stole mixer, 3 amplifiers and a piano totaling N760,000 from a church, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, a resident of Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of stealing, burglary and threatening violence.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 7 at Winner’s Life Ministry Church, Peter Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos.

    He said the accused broke into the church and stole the musical instruments belonging to Winner’s Life Ministry Church.

    Kokoye said that the accused was caught by Mr Chigozie Orisakwe who saw him trying to escape with the instruments.

    The prosecutor also said that when Orisakwe confronted the accused over the matter, Ileka claimed that he stole the instruments because the church had not paid his salary for several months.

    Kokoye said that when Orisakwe tried to stop the accused from going away with the items, he threatened to stab him with knife.

    The prosecutor said it was at this juncture that the church reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

    He said the offence contravene Sections 56, 287 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 308 prescribes seven-year jail for burglary while Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing, if convicted.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until Dec. 29 for hearing.

    Man gets N50,000 bail for N8000 theft

    A 22-year-old man, Jamiu Habeeb, who allegedly stole 10 shirts worth N8000 from a trader, Mohammed Isah, was on Friday in Lagos granted a N50,000 bail.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, who gave the ruling at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, ordered the accused to provide one surety as part of the bail conditions.

    Etti said the surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
    The accused, who entered a ‘not guilty’ plea, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who resides at the Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos, committed the offences on Nov. 21, at Ijora Market, Apapa, Lagos.

    Kokoye said that the accused and his accomplices, now at large, conspired to steal 10 shirts worth N8000 from Isah’s shop at about 3:00 pm.

    The prosecutor claimed that the accused and his accomplices went to the complainant’s shop pretending they were customers interested in buying shirts.

    He said they picked 10 shirts and ran away without paying.

    Kokoye explained further that the complainant raised an alarm about his stolen shirts and other traders ran after the accused.

    He said that Habeeb was apprehended by some traders, while his accomplices escaped with the shirts.

    Kokoye said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    Section 287 prescribes three years’ imprisonment for stealing, if convicted.
    The case was adjourned until December 21, for mention.

  • Trader arraigned for N240, 000 fraud

    Trader arraigned for N240, 000 fraud

    A 28-year-old trader, Chima Akwo, has been docked at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for fraud after he allegedly obtained power shower worth N240,000 from a businessman under false pretences.

    The accused is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining an item under false pretences, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye told the court that the accused, who resides in Apapa area of Lagos, committed the offences on Sept.15 at the Satellite town in Lagos.

    Kokoye claimed that the accused obtained power shower worth N240,000 from one Obinna Akanazu with a promise to pay him the following day.
    He said that the accused started using the power shower but refused to pay Akanazu as promised.

    Kokoye said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

    The offence contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 314 of the law prescribes a 15-year jail term for offence of obtaining items under false pretences.

    The senior magistrate, Mr M. A. Etti granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum.

    Etti said the surety must be gainfully employed and must also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the

  • Student arraigned for removing friend’s teeth

    Student arraigned for removing friend’s teeth

    For allegedly punching off a friend’s four teeth at a go, an 18-year-old secondary school student, Emmanuel Edu, was on Friday hauled up before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, who resides at Festac Town, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous harm.

    He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety in like sum as part of the bail conditions.

    Etti said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The prosecution had alleged that the accused had given Innocent Obinna several blows in the mouth and removed four of his
    teeth on the spot.

    According to Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, the accused committed the offences on June 23 at 512 Road, Festac Town, Lagos.

    Kokoye said the complainant and the accused, who are friends were playing football when an argument arose.

    “Efforts by other students at the scene to settle the dispute were unsuccessful.

    “Obinna reported the case to the police and Edu was arrested.”

    The offences contravened Sections 173 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.

    The case was adjourned until July 7 for mention.

     

  • Dealer faces N1.8m car theft charge

    A 32-year-old dealer, Ibrahim Garba , who allegedly stole a car valued at N1.8 million,  was on Wednesday released on N500,000 bail on the orders of an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa , who gave the ruling, granted the accused two sureties.

    He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh told the court that the accused, who resides at Ajegunle area of Apapa, committed the offences on Aug. 29, 2016 at Esado Street, Olodi-Apapa.

    He alleged that the accused stole a car valued at N1.8 million belonging to the complainant, Mr Isaac Nwogu.

    “The complainant said that he gave his car to Garba to look for a buyer, but to  Nwogu’s surprise the accused sold the car and converted the money to personal use.”

    The offence contravened Sections 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years imprisonment for offenders.

    The case was adjourned until April 26 for mention.

     

  • Man docked for stealing inverter battery

    A 33-year-old man, Idowu Moshood , on Wednesday appeared at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing an inverter battery worth N85,000.

    Moshood, a resident of Apapa area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in November 2016 at No. 22 Achakpo St., Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos.

    Elibeh alleged that the accused conspired with one other now at large, and stole an inverter battery valued at the amount, property of one Wisdom Perry.

    He alleged that the accused and his accomplice gained access into the complainant’s compound through the entrance gate, which was left open.

    The prosecutor said the accused was returning from work when he saw Moshood at the gate, carrying the battery.

    He said the complainant quickly shouted for help and Moshood was caught, while his accomplice escaped.

    Alibeh said the offences contravened section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three-year jail term for stealing while Section 409 prescribes two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail for N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate adjourned further hearing in the case till April 26 for mention.

     

  • Woman docked for cutting neighbour’s finger

    A 34-year-old woman, Ada Ikart, on Tuesday appeared in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating her neighbor, Justina Oke, and used razor blade to cut her finger.

    Ikart, a resident of Baba Sule Str. Ajegunle, Apapa in Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 24, 2016 at her residence.

    Kokoye said that the fight started as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.

    The prosecutor also said Oke reported the case to the police, adding that the accused was subsequently, arrested and charged to court.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three-year jail for assault, occasioning harm.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
