  • FG begins illegal structures demolition under Lagos Bridges

    The Federal Ministry of Works in Lagos State has begun demolition of illegal structures under bridges used as hideouts by miscreants and other illegal activities.

    The Federal Controller of Works, Mr Adedamola Kuti, led ministry officials alongside the Police Task Force from the Alausa Command on a tour of various sections under the bridges late on Thursday.

    The operation which started at 4.00 p.m. lasted till 8.30 p.m.

    The taskforce headed by DSP Shettima Kolo served eviction notices on illegal occupants on the Right of Way, traders, artisans and other business concerns under the bridges.

    The operation began with the demolition of a fence constructed under the ramp on the bridge linking Adeniji Adele Road which also links the Carter Bridge and Ebute Ero.

    During the demolition exercise, several arrests were made while police also recovered some weapons including axes, cutlasses and knives from the illegal occupants under the bridge.

    A staff of an advertising agency, who identified himself as Mr Seyi Philips told ministry officials that his firm erected the fence to protect facilities servicing its billboard from social miscreants.

    Philips added that they did not envisage that the construction would become a hideout for the miscreants.

    During inspection of the Iddo Bridge which is an extension of the Carter Bridge, several lock up shops had been constructed under the bridge.

    Some of the shops were being used as warehouses and the occupants claimed that they had been paying rent to the
    administrators of the facility for several decades.

    The demolition squad advised owners of lock up shops and warehouses under the Iddo Bridge which is an extension of the Carter Bridge to vacate before commencement of the demolition.

    The team also served car dealers and mechanic workshops under the Iponri, Ijora-Olopa, Iganmu and Costain Bus Stop sections of the Eko Bridge verbal eviction notices.

    Also, affected the old ministry’s training school converted to living houses and brothels under Eko Bridge.

    Other bridges inspected are the Marine Beach, Otto, Apapa and the Costain Bridges.

    Kuti told newsmen that three bridges had been destroyed by fire in the past as a result of the activities of the illegal occupants.

    “We need to safeguard our infrastructure and that is why we are appealing to you (the press) and to Nigerians
    that once you notice anything that could affect these infrastructure they should please inform us.”

    “Some people are living under these bridges, cooking, doing all sorts of things and some of the
    items recovered by the police were weapons of destruction.

    “So, what are they doing there? Apart from the fact that their activities constitute a big abuse
    to the bridges, it also constitutes big security threat because you may never know what they are
    doing under those bridges especially at night.

    “This is a very serious abuse that would not be tolerated,’’ he said.

    Kuti lamented that some of the illegal occupants have constructed permanent structures under the bridges
    which were usually locked up during the day.

    Kuti announced that the illegal occupants would be given one week written notices with effect Sept. 24
    to vacate the Right of Way before eviction and demolition of their structures.

  • Suspected cultist gets N50,000 bail

    A 35-year-old man, Junior Ubah, was on Thursday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to a cult known as Eye confraternity.

    The accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

    Ubah, who claimed to be a clearing agent at TinCan Island Ports, Apapa, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Police Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the offences were committed on July 30 at Fadeyi off Lagos-Ikorodu Expressway.

    Ubah and two others still at large were caught with a truck loaded with stolen excavators belonging to a Chinese company, he alleged.

    According to him, the accused, who was arrested by a police patrol team at midnight of July 30, was later taken to the Alausa Police Station,
    Ikeja.

    The offences contravened Sections 42 (9) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje granted, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must show proof of means of livelihood with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government for two years.

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 28.

  • LASBCA tightens noose on illegal bonded terminals

    LAGOS State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has clamped down on buildings in Apapa illegally converted to bonded terminal from residential apartment without appropriate building plan approval and regularisation from the state.

    Its General Manager, Lekan Shodeinde, who was represented by the Agency Secretary, Mr. Tayo Fakolujo, spoke on the sideline during sealing by the agency in Ajeromi-Ifelodun/Apapa local government areas and its environ. He revealed that the government, in its quest to put the state on other smart cities’ pedestal in the world, is making Lagos a well-planned and structured society where buildings are constructed according to building plan approval granted by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA). During the exercise, Queena Bonded Terminal, Don Climax Bonded Terminal, Godday Cinema  and other buildings and terminals were sealed by the agency.

    Shodeinde, who said it would be a continuous exercise, argued that the genesis of Apapa gridlock is as a result of indiscriminate citing of tank farms and bonded terminals in the areas without requisite approval from the state government.

    He is confident that with the new monitoring and auditing of building exercise in the state, operators of a terminal or owner, who converted residential buildings to commercial use without proper regularisation, building engineering appraisal and recourse to the Master Plan of the area, would be prosecuted.

    A resident of Dada Onijomo Street, Awodi-Ora in Ajegunle, Mrs. Taiwo Aina, regreted that since the siting of bonded terminal in the area, the community had not known peace as a result of indiscriminate parking of trailers on the street.

    Also, another resident of Osho Drive, Kirikiri road, Olodi-Apapa, agreed that bonded terminals in the area have contributed hugely to traffic hold up around the area, adding that the area has lost her glory as trailers and motorists have turned the area into dumping ground for containers.

    Shodeinde, however, appealed to  Lagosians to comply with the building laws and seize the opportunity of the six months amnesty to regularise and perfect their building documentations to avoid any form of embarrassment from Law Enforcement Officers.

    He said  government officials of the new reformed and restructured LASBCA officials aimed at working together with the people for their own safety and for a safer and a well-planned smart- city.

     

  • Ambode to FG: Revive ports in other states to save Lagos from gridlock

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday tasked the Federal Government to do everything within its powers to revive existing Ports in other States of the federation so as to bring about permanent solution to the perennial traffic congestion in Apapa axis of the State.

    Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Third Quarter Town Hall Meeting, the 12th in the Series, held at the Community Primary School, Iberekodo in Ibeju Lekki Local Government, said the recent chaos witnessed in the area was beyond traffic issues, saying that concerted efforts must be made to revamp moribund ports.

    According to him,  beyond getting other ports up and running,  the issue of tankers queuing up to lift petroleum products from Tank Farms in Apapa was also a major issue causing gridlock and damaging road infrastructure in the area,  which according to him was inimical to the economic growth of not just the State,  but Nigeria in general.

    “It would be very unfair to Lagosians if I don’t talk about issues relating to traffic management and integrated transport management most especially what we have witnessed in the last one week in Apapa, but again I would like to tell Lagosians that every stakeholder that is‎relevant to resolving the Apapa crisis, we have gone to work and you can see that there is a major improvement.

    “But again, this issue has become perennial and in the last six years, it’s always been there, it comes and goes, but the challenge is to be able to find a permanent solution and in that reason Mr. President had directed the Vice President to come and see what the situation is and to actually give us a permanent solution. We are grateful Mr. President, we believe strongly that every layer of government should collaborate to be able to resolve this Apapa crisis.

    “But we all must know that Apapa crisis is more than traffic issues. That is where all States depend on for revenue through Customs because the revenue is shared at FAAC. If anything goes wrong in the Port, whatever they get from Federal Allocation Account Committee (FAAC) could reduce,” Governor Ambode said.

    Stressing that the Apapa congestion was a national issue that required urgent attention, the Governor also noted that oil pipelines should be revived to discourage the trend of thousands of trucks coming from other parts of the country to lift petroleum products from Apapa.

    “It is bad that we still use truck to lift petroleum products from Apapa to other parts of the country. As it is now, other ports in Nigeria must begin to work immediately to decongest gridlock in Lagos.‎ Whatever has led to continual use of trucks to lift fuel, which is, vandalism of pipeline should be addressed immediately.

    “We believe that this will allow the roads to become free.  We don’t need to continuously use tax payers’ money to build road that were destroyed by tankers.  We call on the Minister of Petroleum and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to work towards reviving the pipelines,” he said.

    The Governor also expressed concern about the approval for the development of tank farms in Ijegun area of Lagos, saying that as much as the State supports redistribution of tank farms, such should be located in areas that are not populated.

    “We don’t need tank farms within Lagos metropolis anymore. There are 68 tank farms in Apapa alone. That is a serious danger waiting to happen. Beyond Apapa, they have approved tank farms in Ijegun axis and that is where we have huge population.

    “We need to redistribute tank farm establishment to outer borders and other parts. This is what we believe should be done at this moment to free Lagos roads,” he said.

    Speaking on the efforts of his administration to develop the economy of the State, Governor Ambode said his administration has continued to keep faith with its mandate to ensure that the future of Lagos remains on a sound pedestal.

    He said the Town Hall meeting, which had moved round the three senatorial districts in the State from its first edition held in October 6, 2015 has continued to provide the Government with first-hand information on the needs of the people and how best to solve them.

    “Our promise from the very beginning was that we are going to give you a government of inclusion and it’s very clear that we are on track. When we look at our scorecard, which is to keep Lagos on a trajectory of growth and development, we are on that track.

    “We are happy to be here. We are everywhere meeting the needs of our people, asking them what the issues are and wanting to respond positively to those issues. Yes, we are not perfect, we would try our best but our people know that we are doing things that would create prosperity for their future,” Governor Ambode said.

    Besides, the Governor said that his administration was not oblivious of the fact that the Eastern and Western axis of the State were pivotal to the future prosperity of Lagos.

    Giving an insight on the next plan of action for the Ibeju Lekki axis,  Governor Ambode also said the construction of the Epe Airport and reconstruction of the Coastal Road were very much on course, adding that the dualization of the Eleko Junction to the T-Junction would commence in January 2019, while the 27 network of roads in Ojokoro, Ayinke House, among others would be completed before the next quarter.

    The Governor, while thanking traditional rulers, community heads and residents of Ibeju Lekki for their unflinching support towards the advancement of the multibillion dollar projects ongoing in the Lekki Free Trade Zone assured that all issues relating to compensation would be resolved before the end of the week.

    Governor Ambode also announced the commencement of recruitment of 1,000 teachers in the State, adding that more would be recruited as the need arises.

    Taking questions from residents, Governor Ambode said his administration would go back to the drawing board and respond accordingly to issues raised, appealing to residents to be patient as the Government would continue to deliver more life changing projects to make life more comfortable for the people.

    A physically challenged resident and graduate of Computer Studies, Micheal Ogunyemi who said he had been jobless for five years could not hold back his joy as the Governor directed the Civil Service Commission to grant him immediate employment from August 1, while relevant agencies were directed to address various issues raised by residents.

     

  • Osinbajo orders 72-hour joint operation to clear Apapa traffic gridlock

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday  directed security agencies and relevant bodies  to commence a 72-hour joint operation to restore order around Apapa and environs with a view to easing vehicular movement in that part of Lagos.

    Trailers parked indiscriminately over a long stretch of the Apapa/Oshodi expressway  have  been causing massive traffic gridlock on the road for several days now.

    Osinbajo who made an unscheduled visit to the road  to personally assess the situation also asked  relevant government agencies  to speed up decongestion of the Apapa ports.

    Involved in the 72 hour joint operation are the Police, Navy, Army, Air Force, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and  the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), LASEMA, Container truck drivers, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NUPENG, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria  are also joining in the operation.

    The vice president was flown  in a  Navy chopper,first  to  Tin Can Island park.

    He was accompanied by Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi and senior Naval and Police officers.

    He walked close to the traffic to see the situation for himself and then proceeded to the Five Star Berth at the NPA where he met with relevant officials and security officers.

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has directed the commencement of a 72-hour joint operation to restore order around Apapa and environs after activities of truck drivers had caused traffic gridlock and made vehicular movement around the axis near impossible over the past few days.
    Prof. Osinbajo who made an unscheduled stop at Apapa Port area on Friday for an on-the-spot assessment of the traffic gridlock, directed authorities concerned to restore sanity on the express way, and for the Ministry  Department and Agencies (MDAs) to speed up the decongestion of the port.
    According to the Vice President’s directive, the operation will be carried out by a collaborative efforts of the Police, Nigeria Navy, Nigeria Army, the Nigeria Air Force, FRSC and the NSCDC, LASTMA, LASEMA, Container truck drivers, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NUPENG, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria .
     Osinbajo landed first at the Tin Can Island park, flown in by a Nigerian Navy chopper, and accompanied by the Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi and senior Naval and Police officers.
    He walked close to the traffic to see the situation of things for himself and then proceeded to the Five Star Berth at the NPA where he met with relevant officials and security officers.
    The plan is to within 72 hours take all the necessary and appropriate steps to restore order to the traffic situation and speed up work on the Port Decongestion.

     

  • Apapa, Amuwo, others to experience power outage

    Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has said some areas under its operational territory would start experiencing power outage from this week.

    The company, in a statement by its General Manager, Corporate Communications, Godwin Idemudia, attributed the power outage to technical maintenance work being carried out by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) some facilities belonging to the power transmission company from which Eko DisCo distribution injection sub-stations servicing the affected areas receive bulk energy load.

    The areas to be affected by the power outage include Apapa, Amuwo, Festac, Ojo, Okokomaiko, and Ijanikin. Others include Iba, Agbara, Badagry, Ibeju, Ajah and their adjoining areas.

    While apologising for the inconvenience the power outage would cause EKEDC customers, the statement further appealed to customers to bear with the situation, adding that the outage was beyond its control as the facilities being worked on wholly belong to Transmission Company of Nigeria which is a completely autonomous body.

    The statement, however, added that enough assurance had been received from TCN that the facility maintenance work would be expedited to ensure restoration of normal power supply to all affected areas in good time.

  • Navy hailed for sanity on Apapa roads

    The Amalgamation of Truck Owners in the Maritime Industry yesterday praised the Nigerian Navy for the steps it took in addressing gridlocks in Apapa area of Lagos.

    Its Publicity Secretary, Oluwaseyi Taiwo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the action had restored sanity and brought great relief to residents and motorists.

    NAN reports that the Commanding officer, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Okon Eyo, had in March issued a 48-hour ultimatum to truck drivers to vacate the roads and bridges leading to Apapa port.

    As part of measures to end the gridlock, the Nigerian Navy introduced a “Call up Card System’’ for the trucks loading at Apapa ports.

    The call up card system allowed only trucks that had business inside the port, while those without call up cards were turned back at the foot of the bridge.

    Taiwo said the order had prevented mischief makers from taken advantage of the chaotic traffic situation.

    “Although the intervention may not be a permanent one, yet, it is a big relief to the road infrastructure in the state. The intervention is also a relief to everyone, but it is not over yet as there is still room for improvement,’’ he said.

    Taiwo recalled that the indiscriminate parking by trucks started during the 2006 Port Reform when trucks were pushed out of their designated parks inside the Apapa Port.

    “Apapa port used to have parking lots for trucks – Trailer Park A, B, C, D and E, – but were taken over during the concession exercise, and the Tin Can Island Port also has its own.

    “Now, without a provision for trucks to have a transit point, they are pushed to the streets. And considering the density of the ports too, things became complicated,” he said.

    Taiwo urged the government to look beyond the temporary solution to a permanent one by providing truck parks and automated loading system for truck owners.

    “Eighty to ninety per cent of the trucks coming to Lagos State have their own parks outside the state, but getting to Lagos, they need a place to park, like a transit park.

    “There should be a provision for a parking place for those coming into Lagos to park their trucks; this will discourage parking on the roads. Also there should be an automated loading system that will serve as call up system to inform the truckers when they have their appointment to load. In this age of GSM, things should be easier and people should be able to access their loading time through automation, this will reduce stress on the drivers too,’’ he said.

  • Police arraign two suspected robbers in Lagos

    Two suspected commercial bus robbers — Sunday Ogenero and Daniel Johnson — were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court charged dispossessing occupants of money and valuables worth thousands of naira.

    The accused — Ogenero, 24, lives in Agausa area of Ajegunle in Apapa, while Johnson, 22, resides at Okoafo area of Badagry.

    Both are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing to which they have pleaded not guilty.

    The accused, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi, told the court committed the offences with others now  at large on Feb. 28 along Apapa Expressway at 7.30 p.m.

    According to him, the accused stole one Techno phone valued at N36,000, N34,000 cash and other valuables from the complainant, Tunde Mustapha, while he was returning home from work.

    “The complainant, after the close of work, boarded a commercial bus heading towards Mile 2 area of Lagos, unknown to him that other occupants of the bus were robbers.

    “The duo dispossessed him of the items but were caught by some passersby, who handed them over to the police,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 ( Revised ).

    The newsmen report that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum. The case was adjourned until July 5.

  • Ambode: Infrastructural renewal in Apapa coming

    The gridlock around Apapa which has defied solution for some time now has attracted Governor Ambode’s attention. To this end, he said the state government would take over the ABAT Truck Terminal at Orile-Iganmu and commence immediate repairs on it as part of efforts to permanently address the perennial traffic caused by breakdown of operations at the ports.     In keeping with the pledge of rendering account of stewardship and getting feedback from the people on a quarterly basis, Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday, April 17  hosted the 2nd Quarter Town Hall Meeting, the 11th in the series at the Apapa Amusement Park.

    In accordance with the tradition of the meeting, developmental strides were again brought to the fore with the focus, this time, on Apapa axis.

    The governor, at the inception of his administration, had assured the people of meeting regularly with them every three months to first lay activities of government to bare and then hear from them the areas they want government to focus on in order to enhance governance.

    Addressing the residents and stakeholders who gathered at the venue, Governor Ambode said: “This is the fourth time that we are coming to Lagos Central. We have been to City Hall and other parts of Lagos Central but this is the fourth out of the 11 town hall meetings we have had.

    “I have equally found out that the moving around through the town hall meetings has helped to enhance governance because, in each town hall meeting, there are issues that are raised that are actually not in the budget or what we plan to do for the people, but when people raise those issues and we end up doing them, it enhances governance.

    “The 21 roads and the two bridges we recently inaugurated in Alimosho is fallout of someone coming out at one of the town hall meetings to say we should do Ikola Bridge. So, when we got there, we only wanted to do five roads and the bridge but we found out that the five roads would not make any sense if we did not do the adjourning roads and so it extended to 16 and later 21 roads with additional bridge, Governor Ambode said.

    On the gridlock around Apapa which had defied solution for some time now, Governor Ambode said the state government would take over the ABAT Truck Terminal Orile-Iganmu and commence immediate repairs on the terminal as part of efforts to permanently address the perennial traffic majorly caused by breakdown of operations at the ports. He said he was concerned about the hardship residents in the axis were being subjected to as a result of the activities of trucks and tankers moving in and out of the ports and tank farms, hence the decision to hold the meeting in the area to find lasting solutions to the problem.

    “I cannot end this address without acknowledging that in Apapa, we have a major challenge; the menace of trucks on our roads and bridges causing endless traffic and loss of business time by Lagosians. This is why we have come here today.

    “Effective from today, our government will take over the ABAT Truck Terminal, Orile-Iganmu and commence immediate repairs to make the park ready for use. In the meantime, we will appeal to the Tanker Drivers’ Association to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and co-operate with our Task Force to ensure smooth flow of traffic and better access to the ports.

    Governor Ambode further said the ABAT Truck Terminal has a capacity to accommodate at least 3,000 trucks, adding that the government was already working with security agencies to see how some of the trucks parked on the Western Avenue Bridge would be moved into the park.

    “Already, we have cleared the shanties and the way we are trying to run it is such that we will be able to accommodate at least 3,000 trucks in the park.

    “I am worried about the Apapa gridlock and that is why I have decided that we should discuss with the people; and also talk to the experts in order to proffer solution,” he said.

    While responding to complaints from residents on the menace of motorcycle operators, the governor ordered the police and other security agencies to enforce the State Traffic Law, especially with regard to their restriction on major highways and roads so as to bring about sanity at the Apapa axis.

    He added that as part of his administration’s efforts to regenerate the axis, Fadaini Road currently in deplorable state would be fixed while Orile-Mile 2-Trade Fair-CMS Road would also be repaired to open up alternative roads for motorists plying the axis.

    The Governor said his administration would complete all ongoing projects before next year’s elections so that residents would continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

    “Yes, this is an election year but what we have told ourselves is that we would not stop delivering dividends of democracy to our people. That is why the 2018 Budget is anchored on consolidating on the things that we have started in the last three years so that we ensure that all ongoing projects are delivered and also implement new ones that are all designed to make life comfortable for our people and place the state on trajectory of sustainable growth and development,” Ambode said.

    He also urged residents to collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), saying that the state must use the election to confirm its status as the most populous state in Nigeria and thereby help to correct the anomaly in distribution of resources.

    “I want to strongly appeal to all Lagosians, this coming election is a different one. We want to define once and for all where the population of Nigeria lies. So, it’s not just about APC or about any other party or people that are not interested, we want to use the PVC to send a message that the real population is in Lagos State.

    I want to appeal to all Lagosians and all party leaders that this mobilisation for the PVC has a longer reach than what you think,” Governor Ambode said.

    Assuring that his administration would ensure that Lagos remains safe, clean and prosperous, the Governor said the prosperity of Lagos would automatically translate to greater prosperity for Nigeria.

    “The prosperity of Lagos State is on a positive trajectory. We believe strongly in it, it is our vision and our mission and nobody is going to stop it. If we secure the prosperity of Lagos, we have secured the prosperity of Nigeria,” he said.

    At the meeting, Ambode addressed all issues raised by the people. They ranged from jobs to physically-challenged persons, health challenges, road construction, rehabilitation of schools and noise pollution, among others.

    Responding to a complaint by a resident on noise pollution and unruly behaviour of many hoteliers in Apapa, the governor ordered agencies of the state government to immediately arrest the situation and clean up the area.

    “We need to commend and appreciate Chief Mrs Onye for being a true and patriotic Lagosian. Against all odds, she came out here to let us know the ills in the society. I will even tell our security agencies to protect her because she has revealed something that is a major menace in Lagos which is about noise pollution and unruly behaviour among most of the hoteliers in this axis.

    “Not everybody will be bold enough to do what she has done. We will go straight to deal with the issue once and for all. This is the real essence of this town hall meeting; I would never have seen this in the file. So, let our security agencies, Safety Commission, Commissioner for Special Duties and others go into Apapa and clean it up. We don’t want any noise pollution; we want the people of Apapa to enjoy governance; we want to experience the sanity that others are enjoying. There are rules and regulations on how you can operate and those rules and regulations must be enforced,” the governor said.

    On calls by some stakeholders for the state government to take over the repair of Tincan Island Road, Governor Ambode said the state would study the progress of work done by the Federal Government, and would intervene accordingly.

    He said: “It is very clear to us that this is a Federal Government road; the little that we can do we have done but we don’t want to create any conflict. You will recall what we went through to take over the Airport Road. We have left the Tin Can side in Apapa to see how far the Federal Government can go.

    “The truth is that once a contract has been issued by the Federal Government on a particular project, whatever it is that the State Government does, we will not get any refund because they will tell you that the contractor is already doing it. But since the rehabilitation of the road is more about our people and people living in Lagos, whatever it is that we can do to ameliorate the pains of our people will be done,” he said.
