  • New commissioners will drive Fayemi’s vision, say APC chieftains

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains have hailed Governor Kayode Fayemi for appointing credible politicians and technocrats as commissioners and special advisers.

A chieftain, Chief Joseph Alake, said the new team will drive the governor’s vision for a better state.

Also, a chieftain, Smart Oyeyemi, said the quality of the State Executive Council reflected the vast talents in Ekitiland.

The commissioners have been screened and approved by the House of Assembly in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Their names were forwarded to the House last week by Governor Kayode Fayemi, following extensive consultations with stakeholders and party leaders across the 16 local governments.

The list, according to observers, reflected the geographical spread. It is a mixed grill of politicians and technocrats bubbling with vigour, vitality, experience and patriotism.

The governor had shortly after he was inaugurated last October forwarded two nominees Mr. Dapo Kolawole and Mr. Olawale Fapohunda to the state House of Assembly for screening. The two were subsequently appointed as Commissioner for Finance and Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice respectively.

Their appointment was undoubtedly to underline his adherence to due process in the administration and financing of the state.

That adherence to due process was what helped him after he left office in his first term when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC did not bother to call him to account, despite the desperation of his successor to frame all manners of charges against him.

The appointment of  Fapohunda was also indicative of the governor’s proclivity to enhancing the rule of law. The governor’s place of honour in the civil rights community where he and his wife, Erelu Bisi, had sufficiently acquitted themselves with honours across tribe and political barriers.

The commissioners are: Dr. Adio Afolayan; Dr (Mrs.) Moji Yaya Kolade; Chief (Mrs.) Moji Fafure; Mr. Emmanuel Foluso Daramola; Mr. Folorunso Olabode; Engr. Dele Faparusi and Mr. Gbenga Agbeyo.

Others are Mr. Olusoga Davies; Mr. Sola Adebayo; Mr. Michael Awopetu; Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua; Mr. Femi Ajayi; Alhaji Ayodele Jinadu and Mr. Febisola Adewale.appointment of the

The nomination of Yaya-Kolade, who contested the governorship primaries on the banner of the APC, must have shocked and at the same time impressed many. In reaching out to a fellow contestant primaries, Fayemi may have shocked some people. He would also have impressed those sufficiently appraised of Dr. Yaya-Kolade’s experience in health and business.

A nurse, pharmacist and medical doctor, Mrs. Yaya-Kolade has experience in health matters that is bound to intimidate anyone. She had before her relocation to Nigeria also established a health facility in the United States.

Dr. Adio Afolayan will also be serving for the second time in the cabinet, having served as commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in Dr. Fayemi’s first term between 2010 and 2014.

In that period he especially delighted stakeholders in agriculture with his enthusiasm to upgrade their capacities especially in mechanised farming. he was instrumental to the purchase of 12 tractors for the sector in that period.

Another person returning to the cabinet is Sola Adebayo, a younger brother of a former governor of the state, Otuba Niyi Adebayo. Adebayo served as commissioner for works in the first Fayemi administration and was a key participant in many of the infrastructure development during that time especially the remodeling of Ado Ekiti.

Another old hand in the list is Alhaji Ayodele Jinadu who served as special political adviser to the governor in his first term.

Gbenga Agbeyo is former chairman of Idi-Osi Local Government Area and member of the inauguration committee.

Dele Fapurusi is former member of d House of Representatives who served as deputy girector general of the campaign and was crucial in those frightful days after the Director-General, Opeyemi Bamidele was shot is also on the list.

Muyiwa Olumilua is the son of the first civilian governor of the state.

He drew commendations to himself last year when ahead of the APC party primary to choose a candidate for the Ekiti South Federal Constituency, he withdrew in favour of the erstwhile chairman of the Ekiti South Senatorial chairman, Kayode Babade. He said the withdrawal was to support the election of someone from Ikere Ekiti, which had been denied the seat over the years.

His act of self-sacrifice would undoubtedly have been appreciated by party elders and all other stakeholders.

Mrs. Fafure, Senatorial Woman leader is also on the list and will add verve to the cabinet with her passion for mobilisaiton.

The nomination of Dr. Olabode who served as the Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Empowerment in the first term is revealing in the opinion of some stakeholders. It could be a determination of Dr. Fayemi to re-energise the spate of community development in the state. Dr. Fayemi created the ministry in his first term in 2013.

It was Olabode’s turf to ginger development of the rural areas especially given that 70 percent of the population of Ekiti people live in the 131 rural communities in the state.

He used the community development associations at that time as a link between the rural communities and the government.

The ministry was responsible for building and renovation of oba’s palaces which was seen as a community development project. Even more remarkable was the grant of about N10 million to communities for self help development projects. 10,000 cooperative societies with about 500,000 members.

  • APC chieftains shun court in suit over Adeleke’s academic qualification

Plaintiffs in the suit challenging the authenticity of the secondary school certificate submitted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the Osun State governorship election, Ademola Adeleke, did not turn up for the hearing of the matter yestrday.

The plaintiffs, Wahab Raheem and Adam Omosalewa Habeeb, who are members of the All Progressives Party (APC), claimed that Adeleke did not possess a valid secondary school certificate to qualify him to contest the governorship election in Osun State.

On September 19, the West African Examination Council (WAEC), in response to an ex-parte order made by the court on September 11, confirmed that Adeleke sat for its May/June 1981 examination and wrote only English Language, in which he got F9.

Parties were expected to attend court yesterday for hearing the matter.

But when it was called, the plaintiffs and their lawyer, Bankole Akomolafe, were absent in court.

Nathaniel Oke (SAN) announced his appearance for Adeleke, while Emmanuel Enoidem announced for the PDP.

They argued that the absence of the plaintiffs and their lawyer was an indication that they were unwilling to proceed with the case.

The lawyers prayed the court to dismiss the suit for lack of diligent prosecution.

Ruling, Justice Othman Musa adjourned the matter indefinitely.

He said parties would be notified later about any future date.

  • ‘Why Tinubu is best leader to reconcile APC chieftains’

‘Why Tinubu is best leader to reconcile APC chieftains’

As the debate on whether President Muhammadu Buhari should seek re-election continues, Imo State Chief of Staff and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, spoke with reporters in Lagos on the importance of a second term for the president, the succession battle in the Southeast state and why Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the best party leader to reconcile aggrieved APC members. PAUL UKPABIO was there.

Are you of the opinion that the President should run again?

I think that most people tend to forget that one’s destiny is not in another’s hand. Your destiny depends on what God says you will become. President Muhammadu Buhari is qualified, very much ready and eager to continue to be the president of Nigeria in 2019. So, I don’t see the reason why somebody will make a remark and it will be binding on the person the remark was made about. I don’t see any reason President Buhari should not contest election in 2019. As I had said in previous interviews, there is no president in the history of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that has fought corruption to bring back the image and integrity of the country. Most people might say that they are not seeing physically what the President is doing; these people should know that it took the PDP 15 years to destroy this nation and only four years will not be enough for President Buhari to do so.

The president has begun the process of putting things in order. But it will take him some time. It is like pouring a cup of sand into a bag of rice; it will take time to sieve the rice from the sand. So, for those of us who are ardent supporters of President Buhari, we don’t see any reason he should not contest the 2019 election. For me, I will support President Buhari. And my governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, also believes in him. President Buhari, at this time in the country, is the man we need to strengthen this platform so that the man that will be coming after him in 2023 as president will stand on a solid foundation and this country will continue to move forward.

Buhari is eminently qualified to run again, and his destiny is in the hand of God, not any man. He is still the best that the country and our great party, the APC, needs in 2019. The president should run again and we will support him.

But, considering that many Nigerians are hungry and angry, do you think Nigerians will still come out to support the President and your party like they did in 2015?

You see when someone makes a remark and you generalise it to mean the whole of Nigeria, I don’t think it is right. When you say hunger, who brought us to this point? Who brought hunger to Nigeria? Was it President Muhammadu Buhari? No, it was the PDP. I don’t know if you have forgotten that a single individual in this country was caught with billions of naira, dollar and pounds. Was it President Buhari that took these monies outside the country? Was it President Buhari that hid these monies inside his house? No. These are the people that destroyed this country before President Buhari came in.

Today, many things are changing for the better. For instance, we were not producing rice before, but today, we are producing rice in so many states of the federation. The other time, people were crying about recession; do we still have recession now? No. Recession is over. So, it will take some little time for President Buhari to stabilise the country. I have no fear that this country will be better again, because it took 15 years for the party called PDP to destroy it, and Buhari is working tirelessly to fix it back. So, I can bet you that President Buhari will again win convincingly in the 2019 presidential election. You can see this from some of the places he has visited recently in the North and the mammoth crowd that came out to receive him. So, Buhari is not somebody you can just make a remark about in the newspaper on the radio or the TV and think that is the way to go. Nigerian politics has changed. The people want somebody who will remember that they are there, and not somebody who will just be busy on the radio and TV blowing grammar.

When you look at President Buhari, you will see that Buharism is running in him. So, it takes a man of integrity like the president for people to believe in him. He has high integrity because he is not corrupt. So, let us wait till 2019. But I can tell you straight away that President Buhari is winning in a landslide in 2019. There is no doubt about that.

President Buhari recently appointed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the chairman of the APC Reconciliatory Committee. But many Nigerians believe it is a difficult task, going by the number of feuds in your party. Do you think that Tinubu can deliver on this assignment?

I have no doubt that His Excellency Senator Bola Tinubu will handle this assignment very well. You know he is one of the leaders of our party, and he is widely respected in the country. He is a man that knows how to settle problems, especially when it comes to issues of political parties. I have no doubt in my mind that President Buhari made the right choice in choosing Asiwaju Tinubu for this very important assignment. He has the capacity to bring together again the different factions in states like Kano and Rivers, among others. So I don’t have any problem in His Excellency, the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu handling the assignment. In fact, this is what our party needs at this point in time. It is what is needed in any political party, particularly when the political party is in power.

It is normal for parties to have internal quarrels, but the good thing is to settle them and move ahead. Asiwaju (Tinubu) will do the job very well, and we believe that his team will at the end of the day bring back every member to one family, the APC.

Some people believe that Tinubu will have a difficult task when he comes to Imo trying to reconcile the state’s Abuja politicians who are not in good terms with those that are based the state and who have the backing of Governor Okorocha…

I don’t think that we have any faction in Imo State. We have one political family and that is the APC, which Owelle Rochas Okorocha is the leader. So, if there is any other Abuja APC or whatever, I don’t know about that. Remember that you don’t win an election in Abuja; you win an election in the state. If you are an APC leader in Abuja, then you better vie for election there. There is no faction in APC in Imo State. We have one family. So, Imo State is not one of the states that Senator Bola Tinubu will come to, because we don’t have any problem in the state.

Recently, Governor Okorocha announced that he would support the Commissioner for Information, Prof Nnamdi Obiaraeri, for the Okigwe Senatorial seat instead of the incumbent Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, and this is raising some dust. Is this not a part of the feuds Senator Tinubu will have to settle?

No, nobody has driven Senator Uwajumogu away from the party. He is the senator representing the Okigwe zone, but the governor has the right to say, ‘this is the person I want to support.’ But that does not mean that any other person from that zone will not choose who he or she will support. It is a democracy. Everyone has the right to support a candidate of his choice like the governor did. Of course, if there are 600,000 persons in Okigwe zone and 400,000 say it is Ben Uwajumogu, the governor will not change it. And if they say it is this particular person, nobody will change it. So, the governor has the right to say this is the person I want to support, like other people would also do.

But all of us in the APC, when we get to the party’s primary, whoever wins the primary will represent the party. The governor has only said this is the person I think can represent this senatorial zone very well. There may be other people too who may think that Ben will represent them very well. So, when they get to the field, whoever wins will take the day. I don’t think this is a problem. You will discover that apart from the person the governor said he would support, at the end of the day, you may see up to 20 to 30 other persons running for the same position in the zone.

The Rescue Mission programme of the governor will be coming to an end by next year. Do you think that the budget presented by Governor Okorocha for this year would effectively complete this programme?

Very well. We believe that by May 2019, His Excellency will be handing over to the next governor completed projects which he started in 2011 to 2019. So we don’t have any doubt in our mind that His Excellency will finish the projects he has started. He will be handing over clean, completed projects to anybody that will come in as the next governor of Imo State.

What is your next political destination in the state? Is it the governorship?

Many people have asked me this question and I have seen a lot of endorsements coming from the APC, from the youths, from women, from different groups. I want to appreciate and thank each and every one of them for indicating their interests and urging me to come out to run for the 2019 governorship election in Imo State. I want to believe that this is coming from their hearts and because of the love they have for me. Year 2019 is fast approaching, but for now, we have a governor. By 2019, I will know where God will take me to. But for now, His Excellency Owelle Rochas Okorocha is still our governor, and I have also told him that in a short time, I will come out and make my intention known to everybody.

Meanwhile, I have to give it to the youths of Imo State. Left for them, they would have opened my mouth and make the declaration on my behalf. But I want to assure them that I will not disappoint or let them down. At the right time and very soon, I will make it known to everybody. It is not something to fear or worry about. Where we are going to, God has already destined it and I don’t think that any man can change it. What God has made, nobody can unmake it. So, 2019 will be 2019.

But, if the APC gives you its ticket, many in Imo think this will run against the Imo Charter of Equity, particularly as the Orlu zone has held power already for 16 years through Achike Udenwa and Rochas Okorocha. Do you think the Okigwe and Owerri zones will allow another eight years of the Orlu zone through your candidacy?

When you say zone, I wonder what zone you are talking about. And when you say equity, I wonder also what you mean by equity. You know the greatest problem in this country is this issue of zoning. And when you talk about zoning, my own federal constituency, my own local government area has never produced the governor of this state. Have we produced the governor of the state? Has the governorship been zoned to my local government area? Has it been zoned to my federal constituency? Has it been zoned to the other federal constituencies like Ngor Okpalla, Okigwe, Ihitte Uboma and others? This is the question we should be asking ourselves.

  • Amaechi’s allies condemn Wike’s directive on APC chieftains

The Inter-ethnic Network for Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (INCRA) has condemned the directive of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on two chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state: Dr. Chidi Lloyd and Ojukaye Flag-Amachree.

Wike, at Government House, Port Harcourt last weekend, during the inauguration of the reappointed Rivers Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Emma Aguma, SAN, asked him to fast-track the “political” trial of Lloyd, a former Majority Leader of the state’s House of Assembly and Flag-Amachree, an ex-Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers, when Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, was the state governor.

INCRA, through a member of its

Interim Management Team, Samuel Amadi, yesterday in Port Harcourt, urged Rivers governor to heed Amaechi’s advice to him, especially to take the business of governance seriously and work towards protecting and improving the lives of Rivers people, instead of spewing licentious and spurious statements at every given opportunity.

It said: “Sadly, a fortnight after Rt. Hon. Amaechi’s advice, Wike seems not to have learnt anything, but has continued in his usual pettiness and vindictiveness, thereby abandoning his primary constitutional responsibility of providing good governance.

“We are not surprised about Rivers Governor’s directive to Aguma to reopen the conclusive prosecution of Dr. Lloyd over the July 9, 2013 fracas on the floor of Rivers House of Assembly and trial of Hon. Flag-Amachree over the alleged murder of one Smart Soberekon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Asari-Toru LGA during the last election.

“Dr. Lloyd and Hon. Flag-Amachree are both law-abiding and well-respected Rivers sons, who have served the state well and have made more meaningful contributions towards the development and progress of the state than the present administration has made thus far. Hence, they are never afraid to submit to any judicial process that is free of executive influence and manoeuvre.

“It is not in contention that Hon. Flag-Amachree was lawfully granted bail, while the family of the deceased Soberekon, having been satisfied that the former council chairman is innocent of the murder charge preferred against him, withdrew from the case, but the Rivers State government has shown vested interest in the case, for obvious reasons. Also, Dr. Lloyd has never been served with any court process relating to the issue raised. It is wrong for Rivers governor to allege that he (Lloyd) is evading prosecution.”

The group also stated that the charges against Lloyd were dismissed by the court in 2013, for want of merit, but upon assuming office in 2015, Wike, actuated by vendetta and punitiveness, directed the Rivers attorney-general to reopen the case.

It noted that it was Lyold that bravely stood against and considerably aborted the July 9, 2013 attempted impeachment of the then Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, Otelemaba Dan Amachree, by five “renegade” members of the Assembly, who were working for Wike and a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

INCRA declared that if the Rivers governor was sincere about his pursuit of justice, he should begin by ensuring that the killers of innocent citizens in the state were prosecuted accordingly, while asking Wike to get serious with governance or resign forthwith.

  • APC chieftains remanded for ‘threat to bomb oil facilities’

Two chieftains of All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Curtis Ugbo and Comrade Odion Olaiye, have been remanded in prison custody for allegedly threatening to bomb oil facilities.

Both were arraigned at an Oredo Magistrates’ Court, Edo State, last Friday and two-count charges of invasion of the country with foreigners were brought against them.

The chieftains had led protests under the auspices of the Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) over ownership claim of Gelegele by the Ijaw and Itsekiri.

They marched on the headquarters of the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), demanding employment of more Bini youths.

The charges read: “That you Curtis Eghosa Ugbo on the 20th day of March, 2017 at NPDC Sapele Road, within the Oredo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: Instigating the invasion of Nigeria and hereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code.

“That you Curtis Ugbo on the 20th day of March, 2017 at NPDC, Sapele Road, instigated a group of intellectuals, some of who are foreigners, to invade the NPDC office in Benin City, Government House Complex House of Assembly with a threat to use the military wing of the Benin Solidarity Movement to launch attacks on oil producing communities all within the territory of Nigeria and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 38 of the Criminal Code.”

The Magistrate, P.E. Foy Iyama, adjourned the case till May 15 for mentioning.

Edo 2016: APC chieftains await directive from Oshiomhole

As political tension in the camps of aspirants seeking to fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the coming party primaries, a chieftain of the party, Reverend Michael Egharevha, yesterday insisted that only Governor Adams Oshiomhole will determine who succeeds him in 2016.

He also dismissed as untrue perceived acrimony in the party following speculation making the round that the governor may have settled for the candidacy of Mr Godwin Obaseki, Chairman, Edo State Economic Team.

He equally berated those aspirants who are threatening fire and brimstones over the alleged governor’s support for Obaseki and the reminded them that they are political creation of the governor and therefore should trend with caution.

  • APC chieftains lauds Ambode on N4.8 bn equipment

APC chieftains lauds Ambode on N4.8 bn equipment

A former Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government in Lagos, Comrade Ayodele Adewale, has described the donation of security equipment worth about N4.8bn to the Lagos Police Command by the state government as worthwhile, considering the several gadgets procured with the sum.

Adewale said it was highly commendable that the governor of the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, brought his accounting acumen to bear in acquiring several gadgets with such amount, adding that the development had truly announced the governor as a good manager of resources.

He said: “What catches my fancy was the amount of money expended on the project going to about N4.8bn used in purchase of three helicopters, gunboats, armored personnel carriers, saloon vehicles, utility vehicles, power bikes and so many other gadgets including drones. It is a very good thing and a very conservative expenditure and I can say that the Governor should be commended for such amount to be utilized for that amount of materials. It’s a lovely expenditure.”

Also speaking, former Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Teju Philips said with the development, Governor Ambode has met the expectation of Lagos residents on security.

“There has been panic about security of lives and property and for me, I believe that the huge investment will go a long way to gear up the level of security awareness that the government is creating for the people,” she said.

  • APC chieftains accuse opposition of interference

Two chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, Alhaji Kareem Adebayo and Mr. Robert Ogunjimi, have accused some members and leaders of the opposition parties in the state of undue interference in the internal affairs of the ruling party in their bid to “reap from where they did not sow”.

Adebayo and Ogunjimi, who are the chairman and secretary respectively of the APC in Saki West Local Government Area, said the identified politicians, especially those who abandoned the APC for Labour Party (LP) and Accord Party (AP), were in the habit of cashing in on any perceived misunderstanding within the APC to mislead its national leadership with a view to getting undue attention.

In a statement they said: “A good example of their opportunistic antics was the attempt to hijack the minor squabble which resulted from the nomination of Adebayo Shittu as a ministerial nominee by President Buhari as they quickly reached out to him (Shittu) with a blueprint that had been prepared to cause schism and polarise our party.

“But unknown to those political players, what happened between Shittu and the leadership of the APC was a mere expression of grievance which yielded the desired results as the minister-designate has since mended fences with his fellow party men while he now enjoys their full support and co-operation.
