BREAKING: APC suspends former Minister Aregbesola

The immediate past Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola has been suspended by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for alleged anti-party activities and outbursts against President Bola Tinubu, former Governor Chief Bisi Akande and others.

The Nation recalled Aregbesola, a two-term Governor, was at loggerhead with his successor, Adegoyega Oyetola whose re-election he opposed openly.

He allegedly teamed up with opposition forces for 2022 Osun governorship elections and 2023 general elections.

In 2022, he said he had prayed to God to bring down the party leadership, including Tinubu and Akande, and outburst greeted by wide condemnation.

The leadership of APC from Ward 8, Ifofin, Ilesa  where the ex-Governor hails from set up a disciplinary committee to investigate and found him guilty of anti-party activities.

Sequel to a letter by the Secretary of State Disciplinary Committee, Comrade Waheed Adediran dated October 24, 2024 with reference number APC/OS/RA/01 to Aregbesola, Osun APC chairman, Tajudeen Lawal and Secretary, Alao Kamoru, the party suspended him on six grounds of anti-party and others.

A letter submitted to the APC’s National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, obtained by The Nation noted that Aregbesola remains suspended.

It reads: “Following Committee, the State Executive Committee (SEC), llesa East Local Government Executive reviewing the allegations and by the powers vested in it by Article 21(3) (vi) (c) of the party’s Constitution, hereby suspends Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola from the party pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations by a Disciplinary Committee.

“The State Executive Committee has constituted a Disciplinary Committee to investigate and provide Ogbeni Aregbesola with the opportunity to respond to the allegations of activities deemed to violate Article 21 (2) of the party’s Constitution, particularly relating to anti-party activities that undermine the collective interests of the APC levelled against him as follows:

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has urged the electorates in Akoko South East Local Government Area to use their votes to protect the progress so far recorded by the ruling party.

Governor Aiyedatiwa spoke when he led the campaign tour to many communities in the locality ahead of next month’s governorship election. At the palace of Oba Akinyele Akinsunloye Oyolola, the Olisua of Isua Akoko, Governor Aiyedatiwa said he would provide more equipment to the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies to ensure the safety of the people and protect livelihoods across the state.

This gesture has given us a sense of belonging, and we thank you for recognizing our people.”

Energy advocates, APC group write Tinubu over local refineries

The Energy Reforms Advocates, ERA  and the APC Youth Vanguard for Change, APCYVC have urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate the persistent failure of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to restore the Port Harcourt and other local refineries.

The groups expressed concerns over the $2.9 billion approved in 2021 for the rehabilitation of the refineries, which remain non-functional despite NNPCL’s assurances.

In a letter addressed to the President, they lamented the continuous state of decay within the petroleum sector, stating it is a reflection of a persistent failure of NNPCL leadership.

These failure, the  ERA Convener, Opialu Fabian and APCYVC Convener, Ezewanka Ugochukwu who signed the letter, said  has led to economic sabotage, health hazards and environmental risks due to the importation of fuel.

They criticised NNPCL’s repeated promises and prolonged inaction, citing systemic failure and corruption within the leadership.

They questioned the utilisation of funds allocated for refinery rehabilitation, which seems unaccounted for. Billions spent on maintenance over 25 years have yielded little to no fuel production.

The groups proposed immediate actions, including revamping the regulatory framework, reactivating local refineries, transparency in subsidy implementation, strengthening NNPCL’s leadership, and empowering the public with information.

The letter partly reads: “Your Excellency, we are witnessing a dire situation. Despite the approval of $2.9 billion in 2021 for the rehabilitation of these vital refineries, they remain non-functional. NNPCL has repeatedly assured Nigerians that these facilities would soon become operational, yet these assurances have failed to translate into reality.

“The refineries stand dormant, while Nigeria, an oil giant and Africa’s largest oil producer, finds itself dependent on foreign countries to meet its domestic fuel needs. The consistent promises and prolonged inaction serve not only as a betrayal of trust but as a profound reflection of a systemic failure within the leadership of the NNPCL.

“The ongoing importation of fuel represents an insult to Nigeria’s position as a leading crude oil producer. This cycle of imported substandard fuel undermines the health, safety, and economic stability of our citizens. The consumption of such fuel has led to health hazards, poses a risk to vehicles, and has severe implications for agricultural machinery. Nigerian citizens, meanwhile, pay a premium price for this subpar fuel, which contributes to rising inflation and daily hardships.

“It is unacceptable that as one of the top oil-producing nations in the world, Nigeria is forced into a position where it has no choice but to rely on imported petroleum products to meet domestic demand. This prolonged reliance on imports has placed a significant strain on the nation’s foreign reserves, while a small, corrupt few reap immense profits. The corruption within this system is so deep-seated that these vested interests seem to actively oppose any attempt to rehabilitate our refineries.

“The importation of fuel goes beyond economic implications; it endangers the lives of Nigerian citizens and the environment. Vehicles, agricultural equipment, and power generators are all at risk of serious damage from this substandard fuel.

“The time has come for systemic reform. The root causes of these challenges are multi-faceted, encompassing institutional corruption, regulatory weaknesses, and a pervasive culture of unaccountability. We propose the following actions as immediate steps toward a lasting solution:

    “Full investigation and accountability

    revamp of the regulatory framework,

immediate efforts to reactivate local refineries’ transparency in subsidy implementation, strengthening NNPCL’s leadership and oversight and empowering the public with information and action.

”Mr. President, as Nigeria seeks to redefine its path towards sustainable economic growth, self-sufficiency, and a better future for its citizens, there can be no compromise on energy security. As it stands, the actions and inactions of NNPCL and its leadership are actively undermining our national interests. We implore Your Excellency to take swift and decisive action to address these longstanding failures.”

  • No council poll in Kano, says APC

No council poll in Kano, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC)  has explained why it did not participate in the local government council elections in Kano state on Saturday.

Commenting on the election, Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, a chieftain of the APC and former Secretary to State Government (SSG) of Kano, said they don’t recognise the legitimacy of the local government polls held on Saturday, insisting there was no council election in Kano state.

“The Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Simon Amobede still stands, rendering the election null and void,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the APC, he said the party’s decision not to participate is rooted in the Federal High Court  ruling that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission‘s (KANSAIEC’s) leadership is partisan and biased towards the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

“Since this judgment hasn’t been appealed, the APC considers any outcome of the purported election to be illegal, noid and void,” he said.

“APC considered three key points for its decision, which included the Federal High Court Judgment, which means the election is null and void due to the standing court ruling.

“The second point is the Partisan Electoral Commission; KANSIEC’s leadership is seen as biased towards the NNPP.

“The second issue is that of Invalid Outcome; Any result from the election will be considered illegal.

“A recent Federal High Court judgment that quashed all NNPP chairmanship candidates, further reinforcing their claims of electoral illegitimacy,” he said.

Rabiu Sulaiman Bich called on all APC members to exercise restraint, patience and await the final outcome of their legal battle.

  • Obey court order on council poll, APC tells Yusuf

Obey court order on council poll, APC tells Yusuf

The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas has cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to obey court order and avoid action that could lead to breakdown of law and order in the State.

Abbas, in a statement to newsmen in Abuja on Friday, frowned at an alleged inciting statement credited to the Governor at a rally in the Kano metropolis on Thursday.

The Governor at the rally held at the Sani Abacha stadium, Kano was alleged to have openly boasted to supporters of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) that nobody can stop the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting the local council poll billed to hold on Saturday.

The APC Chairman complained that such statement was unbecoming of the chief security officer of the state.

The opposition party called on the State Government to obey the last Tuesday order of a Kano, Federal High Court presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda which restrained KANSIEC from holding the council poll after sacking the Chairman, Secretary and Commissioners of the agency.

The opposition party noted that the call to ignore the court directive was a clear case of an invitation to anarchy and lawlessness.

“The Governor should simply respect the laws. As law-abiding citizens interested in the growth of our dear state of Kano, the Governor should desist from any act that could throw the state into chaos. Inciting people to take the laws into their hand is not the hallmark of good leadership,” the party noted.

Justice Amobeda also restrained Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from issuing voter’s register to KANSIEC while ordering the security agencies including Police, Department of State Security  (DSS) and Civil Defense from participating in the proposed election.

The court ruled that, the KANSIEC chairman and other members of the Commission are card-carrying members of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and also are not civil servants above grade level 14.

The Court held that the defendants being a card carrying members of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) and in partisan politics is contrary to Section 197 (1) (b) and Section 200 (1) (a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and are not qualified to hold such positions in the state electoral body.

APC not ready for peaceful transition, says Edo govt

Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has accused the Dr. Pius Odubu-led 24-member transition team of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of not being ready for peaceful transition on November 12.

Nehikhare, yesterday at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin, claimed that members of Edo APC transition team raised false alarm that the Godwin Obaseki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government did not provide them with the necessary documents, for them to function.

He alleged that members of Edo APC transition team had not shown readiness to ensure a smooth transition, in view of their refusal to attend the meetings of the joint committee.

Nehikhare claimed that Obaseki’s administration had provided the documentation in digital form, but the APC committee members insisted on hard copies of the documents, which, according to him, had also been provided for them.

He said: “Edo State Government transition committee members would continue to come for meetings until October 30, to provide information APC transition committee members required or wanted, as long as it was within the transition committee’s mandate.

“APC’s transition team members boycotting meetings is not a problem, but demanding hard copies of documents, meant for only the Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Governor Godwin Obaseki, is impossible.

“APC’s transition committee members are trying to play the role of Edo Governor-elect, by making demands for documents that are not within the purview of the transition team’s mandate.”

Nehikhare also claimed that members of APC’s transition committee had from the outset shown disdain to work with Edo State Government’s transition committee members.

  • Ondo 2024: PDP, APC disagree on governor’s 10 months performance

Ondo 2024: PDP, APC disagree on governor’s 10 months performance

The ruling All Progressives Congress in Ondo State and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, on Monday, disagreed over the 10 months performance of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Ondo PDP spokesman, Kennedy Peretei, said the people’s verdict on Governor Aiyedatiwa’s performance was ‘failure’ but Media Director of the Ondo APC, Steve Otaloro, said Governor Aiyedatiwa has made significant strides in education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

Peretei, in a statement, said work was yet to commence on some roads three months after Governor Aiyedatiwa approved the sum of N35bn for the projects.

He said the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, stay at Royal Birds Hotel & Towers, Alagbaka, Akure, with his retinue of staff despite payment of N217,881,308.00 for the renovation of the Deputy Governor’s Lodge in July this year.

Peretei stated that the renovation of the Deputy Governor’s lodge was supposed to be completed within 12 weeks.

According to the statement, “The money wasted in hotel accommodation for the Deputy Governor would have been enough to renovate his official residence. Is there anybody who is still in doubt that this set of leaders should be shown the way out of Government House come November 16?

“The Aiyedatiwa government has been unable to stimulate the local economy of the state. All those little things that used to put money in the pockets of the common people have since dried up.

But Otaloro said Peretei’s statement was riddled with inaccuracies, speculations, and misinformation.

He said the PDP’s constant attacks would not distract Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to the people.

“What Ondo State needs are smart decisions that benefit the people through policy decisions and programmes. We should focus on progress, not political point-scoring. As a responsible opposition party, the PDP should commit to truth, equity, and balanced opinions in their analysis of the state’s development.

“Their false allegations only serve to spread lies and misinformation, fueled by an insatiable desire for power. We urge the public to discern the truth from the PDP’s fairytales and propaganda.
