APC assures of fairness, transparency at governorship primary election for Ondo State

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has promised to conduct a free, fair and transparent primary election to choose its candidate for the Nov. 11 governorship election in the state.

The party’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, Mr Nze Duru, gave the assurance on Saturday in Abuja as the party drew the curtain on the submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination forms by aspirants.

“We assure aspirants that the party is interested and desirous of conducting a free, fair transparent primary election in Ondo State,’’ he said.

The primary election is scheduled to hold on April 20 to select a standard bearer from among 16 party members that have showed interest in the race.

“Saturday, April 6 marks the formal closure of the first step of electing the person that will fly the party’s flag at the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

“The next exercise will be the screening of aspirants on April 11 and April 12 and after that, the primary election will hold,’’ he said.

Duru said also that aspirants would be formed into groups for the screening to ensure a smooth process.

He enjoined all aspirants to extend a hand of felicitation to whoever emerged as the party’s candidate as was done in Edo.

He explained that Edo had become a reference point in the party’s free process of choosing its candidates as even those not comfortable with the outcome came together to broker peace among party members.

“They came to the negotiation table; had a handshake and now we have a very formidable team; and we believe that APC will win in Edo.

“If we trust that APC will win in Edo, we have confidence that it will win in Ondo State,’’ Duru emphasised.

Those in the governorship race are the incumbent governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiewa, Ms Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo, Mr Olusoji Ehinlanwo, Mr John Odimayo, Mr Jimoh Folorunsho, Mr Duerimini Kekemeke and Mr Samuel Akinfolarin, and Mr Adewale Akinterinwa.

Others are Mr Olugbenga Edema, Chief Olusola Oke, Mr Felix Onwuyeye, Mr Morayo Lebi, Mr Diran Iyantan, Prof. Francis Faduyile, Ms Judith Omogoroye and Mr Ifeoluwa Oyedele.

Oyedele was the last of the aspirants to submit his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.

He said on Saturday while submitting the forms that Ondo State needed a leader with vision and capacity to lead it to the next level, and stressed that he was the candidate to do that.

“I am not new to this process. In 2020, I was the front runner against the late governor of Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.

“Following persuasions from party leaders, I willingly and unconditionally stepped down for Akeredolu to ensure that the party was not disunited.

“And for the first time in the history of party politics, all the aspirants rallied behind Akeredolu at the election that took place on Oct. 10, 2020 and the APC won,’’ Oyedele said.

He added that having sacrificed for the party over the years, and as one of its founding fathers, he was the most qualified aspirant because he had the vision and capacity to lead the state.

He said also that Ondo State needed a governor to change its poor narrative in healthcare delivery and education and he was the ideal man.

    • Insists on the 16 declared by Court of Appeal

The Plateau State chapter of All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday dismissed as an abnormality the decision of State House of Assembly Speaker Gabriel Dewan to swear into the legislature only nine of the 16 members of the party returned by the Court of Appeal as winners of the last election.

Chairman of the APC in the state, Hon Rufus Bature, declared at a press conference in Jos that the action of the Speaker was bound to crash unless the remaining ones were equally sworn in.

Rufus accused Governor Caleb Mutfwang of instigating the swearing in of the nine.

He alleged that Muftwang compelled the nine APC legislators to “succumb to the nocturnal swearing in ceremony that only represented a flagrant abuse of democratic tents and principles.”

Sworn in earlier in the day were Yusuf Dickson Chollom (Barkin Ladi constituency), Abdul Adamu (Mangu North), Daniel Nanbol Lipstick (Langtang North Central), Denti Laven Jacob (Pankshin South), Abel Nansak (Langtang North), Bendel Nanchuat (Langtang South), Wallangko Sylvester Ibrahim (Bokkos), Kwarpo Mathew Sylvanus (Mangu South) and Eli Bako Ankala (Rukuba).

Bature insisted that the remaining 11 APC lawmakers must be sworn in immediately.

He said:”In the face of this undemocratic and unconstitutional development, I make two strong demands: that all the 16 APC lawmakers must be sworn in.

“Secondly, all the 17 elected local government chairmen must be returned to their seats to function as democratically elected LGA chairmen. This is because the Supreme Court has already declared their dissolution as null and void.

“I therefore appeal to all people of conscience to compel the Speaker of the state house of assembly and Governor Caleb Mutfwang to toe the democratic path by ensuring that all the democratic structures function without hindrance.”

“I was called that nine members had met the criteria and I have done my part by inaugurating them.”

The appeal court had unseated 16 PDP members who were initially declared winners of the 2023 election into the state assembly.

The court had ruled on November 19, 2023 that the failure of the PDP to comply with the order of the Plateau State High Court in Jos directing it to conduct valid ward, local governments and state congresses before nominating its candidates for the various elective posts was a breach of the law.

The earlier sack of two PDP senators, three House of Representatives members and 11 members of the State Assembly by the Court of Appeal was based on the same premise.

However, the Supreme Court, while ruling on Muftwang’s appeal on January 12, declared that the election tribunal had no jurisdiction to determine the validity of the primary election conducted by the PDP and the nomination of the governor as its candidate because they were issues internal to the party, which APC and its candidate Nentawe Yilwatda could not question.

The court said: “We have held consistently in a plethora of decisions overtime that the validity of primary election and nomination of a candidate by his party is not a valid ground for an election case.

“Once a person’s name is submitted by his party to INEC as its candidate, he is thereby sponsored by the party and therefore satisfies the requirement of sponsorship by a party under Section 177(c) of the Constitution as he is not an independent candidate.”

Moments after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Muftwang, Dewan threatened to derecognise  the APC legislators who were declared winners by the Appeal Court.

The Plateau chapter of All Progressive Congress (APC) has rejected what it described as the forceful inauguration of nine out of the 16 elected members of the Assemby.

Plateau APC.chairman Hon Rufus Bature dismissed inauguration of nine out of the 16 lawmakers as democratic abnormality that cannot stand the test of time.

Bature, who spoke with reporters after Friday’s  inauguration at Old Government House Jos said: “I received it as a shocking development for the Plateau Governor Barr Caleb Mutfwang to compel nine APC state lawmakers to succumb to the swearing in ceremony that only represented flagrant abuse of democratic tents and principles.”

The nine members sworn in are: Hon Yusuf Dickson Chollom of Barkin Ladi constituency;  Hon Abdul Adamu of Mangu North; Daniel Nanbol Lipstick of Langtang North central; Hon Denti Laven Jacob of Pankshin South; Hon Abel Nansak of Langtang North; Hon Bendel Nanchuat of Langtang South; Hon Wallangko Sylvester Ibrahim of  Bokkos; Kwarpo Mathew Sylvanus of Mangu South and Hon Eli Bako Ankala Rukuba.

Secondly, all the 17 elected local government chairmen must be returned to their seats to function as democratically elected LGA chairmen. This is because the Supreme Court has already declared their dissolution from office as null and void.

APC leaders cry out over ‘fake anointed candidate’

Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have raised the alarm over the activities of a governor from the Southeast and two cabinet members of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the party primary scheduled for April 20.

The leaders said the trio has been lying to aspirants and APC leaders that President Tinubu has anointed a particular aspirant.

Speaking under the auspices of the Ondo State Organisation for Due Diligence (OSSDD), the APC leaders led by Samuel Aderinola, said they were under obligation to warn the people of Ondo about the utterances of the governor, saying it runs counter to the party’s democratic ideals and rights of the people of Ondo State to freely choose their leader.

They said the governor and his allies have been using the name of President Tinubu to hoodwink party leaders, aspirants and the people to support a particular aspirant.

The Ondo APC leaders appealed to President Tinubu to call the governor and the two ministers to order. They called for a level playing field to allow the people of Ondo State people to freely choose their desired candidate.

They added: “At no time did President Tinubu authorise the endorsement of any candidate. It is reassuring that the president has continued to insist on the use of direct primary, to produce the most popular and acceptable aspirant as the candidate of the party, and the combustive agenda of these desperados does not bear any semblance of the good democratic ideals of the president.”

“It is important to remind these hawks that Ondo State people are democratically sophisticated, and they will circumvent this satanic verse being rehearsed by these elements that will stop at nothing to diminish the enviable democratic records that President Tinubu painstakingly garnered, over some tempestuous political voyages.

“At any rate, no one grudges these interlopers for pitching their tent with any aspirant, for the usual pecuniary considerations. What is objectionable in their conduct is falsely and pretentiously using the name of Mr President to deceive innocent leaders, who may fall prey to their criminal antics.

“As it is often said, a stitch in time saves nine. President Tinubu must clip the wings and de-beak these vicious merchants before they precipitate needless complications for the APC in Ondo State.”
