Killing of APC supporter: Police accuse Kogi SDP candidate of undermining security efforts

The Kogi State Police Command said it has begun investigations into the circumstances that led to the killing of a supporter of the All Progressives Congress in Kotonkarfe, Kogi LGA of Kogi State on Saturday.

The Police, in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, SP William Ovye Aya, for the Commissioner of Police, said the Command  received a report where some persons were said to have been killed and injured in the process through political violence.

While assuring that no stone would be left unturned to secure lives and property, the CP condemned acts by some politicians whose stock-in-trade was violence and who had taken it upon themselves to cause mayhem and heat up the state through “their unguarded utterances and unregulated activities”.

He specifically accused the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) Muritala Yakubu of conducts that had allegedly continued to jeopardise security efforts in the state, saying that the SDP candidate “moves around with a retinue of suspected political thugs armed to the teeth.”

“His riding rough-shod and engaging in political brinkmanship and brigandage is an ill-wind that blows no one any good,” the Police said in the statement.

According to the CP, while other parties have been carrying the Police along in their activities, “the SDP candidate has consistently and vehemently refused to honour any of Police invitations for investigation, or inform the Commissioner of Police nor the Command while embarking on political rallies.”

The CP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to commence a thorough, diligent and wholistic investigation of all acts of political violence, accusations and counter-accusations on all the Political Parties and Actors with a view to bringing offenders to book.

The statement reads : “The Kogi State Police Command received a report of alleged attack on the SDP Campaign at Koton-Karfe where some persons were said to have been injured in the process through political violence.

“The CP Kogi State Command CP Bethrand C.Onuoha psc(+) wishes to sympathize with all victims of political violence in the State while condemning in strong terms some Politicians whose stock-in-trade is violence and who have taken it upon themselves to cause mayhem and heat up the State through their unguarded utterances and unregulated activities.

“The CP further directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, SCID to commence a thorough, diligent and wholistic investigation of all acts of political violence, accusations and counter-accusations on all the Political Parties and Actors with a view to bringing all offenders to book.

“The CP assures of the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of all lives and property in the State.

“He further stated that these instances of violence are attributed to the failure of most of the political actors to honour invitations and partake in series of Stakeholders Parleys/Interactions where issues bordering on security and the need to conduct political  activities as enshrined in The Electoral Act are discussed.

“While Chairmen and Candidates of the other Political Parties have continued to honour Police Invitations to discuss petitions and or allegations with the Police, and other salient issues germane to peaceful campaigns, and that of the INTER-AGENCY CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE ON ELECTION SECURITY (ICCES), be it emphasised here that several invitations (have been) extended to the SDP and ADC Candidates for interaction and consultation with the Police to shed light, provide explanations and give their own side of the story on Petitions written against them but to no avail.

“While these other Parties have been carrying the Police along in their activities, the SDP Candidate has consistently and vehemently refused to honour any of Police invitations for investigation, or inform the Commissioner of Police nor the Command while embarking on political rallies to enable the Police provide adequate security coverage.

“His refusal to deal with the Police is undermining peace in the State, has been impeding efforts to stream-line and regulate political activities which in turn has greatly contributed to the pockets of political violence being witnessed in the State presently.

“His riding rough-shod and engaging in political brinkmanship and brigandage is an ill-wind that blows no one any good.

“For instance on the complaint of Breach of Security Against The Executive Governor of Kogi State at Banda on 3rd June, 2023, the SDP Candidate, Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, has consistently refused to honour Police several invitations to give his own side of the story!

“Again, since he applied for Police Security, he was invited to come but till date, he refused to show up. He moves around with a retinue of suspected political thugs armed to the teeth. Consequently, the above facts and scenario, coupled with his recalcitrance and obduracy have continued to jeopardize Police Investigation and maintenance of law and order in the State.

“The CP uses this medium to sternly warn all the Political Parties in the State and their supporters to play by the Rules and stop heating up the State, desist from all forms of violence as anyone caught disrupting the prevailing peaceful environment in the State will be made to face the full wrath of the Law.

“He appealed to the Political Actors to give peace a chance by conducting themselves in peaceful manner and shunning all acts capable of truncating the peace, tranquility and unity of Kogi State.

“To this end, the CP therefore, for the last time, warns would-be trouble-makers to have a change of heart and desist from acts of intolerance as the Police is ever determined to deal decisively with anyone who will not give peace a chance in the State.”

Meseko, who said this while addressing reporters in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, assured Nigerians that President Tinubu would deliver on his election promises.

He described President Tinubu as an experienced politician, businessman and public administrator, citing his various achievements as Lagos State governor and what he accomplished in his first 100 days in office as President.

“When you talk of visionary leadership, give it to him. A little over 100 days in office, see what he has done. Even his worst critics know that this man means business.

“He (Tinubu) identified the global economic crisis, occasioned largely by climate change, COVID-19 scourge, among others, as some of the factors responsible for the setback in the economy of Nigeria under former President Muhammadu Buhari administration, including the more advanced societies. Some are still struggling to come out of the COVID-19 crisis.

“But for a country like Nigeria to have survived it, it is a strong will of a leader,” Meseko said.

Give us more ministers, southeast APC youths beg Tinubu

A group, under the aegis of South East APC Young Progressives Forum, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider the appointment of additional ministerial slots from the southeast geopolitical zone.

The group asked the president to give the zone at least two additional ministers.

Addressing a news conference on Monday, September 25, in Awka, the national convener of the group, Pascal Candle, said the call was necessary to correct the glaring imbalance in the ministerial list.

He said: “Following the latest ministerial nominations from other zones, we, therefore, wish to cry unto Mr President to find a way to remedy this glaring anomaly. We appeal that at least two additional ministers need to be appointed from the southeast.”

Appreciating the president for incorporating youths into his government, the body argued that the zone has a pool of highly qualified young professionals with the capacity to fill the position of Youth Development Ministry for the sake of balance and equity.

The group added: “With the nomination of Ministers of Youth Development from Kwara and Ondo States, Southeast with five states remains the only zone among the six zones without an additional Minister. In fact, we have only five Ministers without any zonal representation.

“We are therefore immensely hopeful and sincerely praying that Mr President will heed our plea of nominating an extra Minister for the South East to give the Progressives in the zone more sense of belonging and most importantly to bring vitality to the Ministry of Youths.”

Ex-Ekiti deputy governorship candidate dumps SDP for APC

Former deputy governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last governorship election in Ekiti State, Ladi Owolabi, has dumped the party to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Owolabi, the running mate to former governor, Chief Segun Oni, during the June 18, 2022 poll in the state, defected to the APC in his Ado-Ekiti ward 003 and was received by the party ward Chairman, Ojo Adeyanju and other members.

Owolabi, who expressed delight about his return to the APC, said he had been a firm believer of progressives as championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said he had remained a member of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) before, during and after the governorship election last year, reiterating his stand of being an APC member even when he served as running mate to Chief Oni.

He explained that he was only on a journey in the SDP to correct some alleged anomalies in the system in the past, adding that Governor Biodun Oyebanji had changed the political narratives in the state since he was elected.

“I have said it, Governor Oyebanji has been doing well. He was the one that made me think faster in returning to the APC fully. You know when there is reaction and a catalyst comes in, the governor is the catalyst in my coming back to the party.”

Bauchi: Accept tribunal verdict, group tells APC, Abubakar

The Bauchi State All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate,  Ambassador Saddique Baba Abubakar, in the last general election, have been advised to accept in good faith the verdict of the state’s Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The tribunal last Wednesday upheld the victory of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Vanguard (BAM-V), a pro-Governor Bala Mohammed group advised the APC and its candidate, in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

In the statement signed by the group’s Director-General, Comrade Mohammed Jibo Abubakar, it noted that with the victory of Mohammed at the poll and in the tribunal, well-meaning people of Bauchi, including APC and its candidate, should join hands with the governor to take the state to greater heights of development.

The group, a coalition of youth groups for democracy and good governance, asserted that the tribunal judgment was not only a victory for the governor but an affirmation of his victory at the poll, adding that it was also a substantial justice to the people of Bauchi, who gave the governor their mandate through the ballot on March 18.

It noted that the tribunal’s judgment confirms the judiciary as the last hope of the common man and also confirms the reward for hard work which the people of the state gave Mohammed through the poll for his good performance in his first term in office.

“Though we acknowledge the fact that the APC and its gubernatorial candidate have the constitutional rights to appeal the verdict of the tribunal, we, however, called on them to accept the verdict in good faith and the spirit of sportsmanship and join hands with the Governor Bala Mohammed administration to take Bauchi State to greater heights.

“Bauchi State has lagged in development for too long before Governor Bala Mohammed came on board on May 29, 2019. During his first tenure, the Governor was able to change the narratives with the level of unprecedented development he brought to the state, making Bauchi State a pride for all. The state as of today can stand shoulder to shoulder with its peers in terms of development in all sectors, including Education, Health, Agriculture, Infrastructure, and Good Governance, among others.

“The fact that the people of the state acknowledged this fact made them massively for the governor in the March 18 Governorship poll for him to continue with his giant strides and further improve the fortunes of the state. There is, therefore, the need for the opposition to not only join hands with the Governor to further develop Bauchi State but also contribute meaningfully to the development of the state,” Jibo stated.

The BAM-V DG, who doubles as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State, called on the  opposition in the state to encourage their supporters to maintain the peace being enjoyed in the state, stating, “We further appeal that everyone should not make utterances capable of fomenting trouble across the state.”

Congratulating the governor, the group urged him to double his efforts at improving the lot of the people.

According to the group,  “We strongly believe that you are aware of the fact that to whom much is given, much is expected of him. The affirmation of your victory at the poll by the tribunal is a further clarion call that you have to continue to work hard for the betterment of Bauchi State and its people as well of Nigeria in general.”

The group also called on the governor to be magnanimous in victory and extend hands of fellowship to all opposition members in the state, including the APC and its candidate for the betterment of Bauchi State and its overall development as well as its good people.

“We urge His Excellency to extend hands of fellowship to all opposition members in Bauchi State and be magnanimous in victory. As much as we have a very strong and undiluted belief in him as a hardworking governor, we advise that His Excellency should know that the reward for hard work is more hard work. We never doubt his ability and capability to work more in his second term than his first term in office,” BAM-V added.

The Bauchi State All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Ambassador Saddique Baba Abubakar, in the last general election, have been advised to accept in good faith the verdict of the state’s Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The tribunal on Wednesday, September 20, upheld the victory of Governor Bala Mohammed in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

The group, a coalition of youth groups for democracy and good governance, asserted that the tribunal judgment was not only a victory for the governor but an affirmation of his victory at the poll.

It added that it was also a substantial justice to the people of Bauchi state who freely gave the governor their mandate through the ballot on March 18, 2023.
