  • 9th Senate: PDP plots Goje-Ekweremadu ticket

The horse-trading for the leadership of the 9th Senate intensified yesterday with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spearheading negotiation with some aspirants from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the office of the President of the Senate.

The PDP is plotting a joint ticket by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Sen. Danjuma Goje and the outgoing Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

But some leaders of PDP are suggesting either Sen. Ali Ndume-Ekweremadu mandate or Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-Ekweremadu ticket.

But most PDP senators-elect, especially loyalists of the outgoing Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, have been uncomfortable with any joint ticket with Ndume or Adamu.

Saraki and influential PDP leaders prefer a deal with Goje, who was once a father-figure in the opposition party before he defected to APC.

The outcome of the proposed alliance will pit the joint candidate for the Senate against the Senate Leader, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, who has been adopted by President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the PDP opted for another alliance to hijack the Senate leadership in order to have a high stake in the 9th National Assembly and secure a comfortable slot for the South-East which might be left out of power sharing at the centre by the APC.

The PDP was said to be interested in a succession plan which will “sustain the current checks and balances against the Buhari administration” as symbol ised by Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara.

According to findings made by our correspondent, Ekweremadu has been holding marathon meetings with some APC senators-elect, especially those rated as “rebellious and amenable”, in order to get at least 56 simple majority out of 109 to enable the alliance to control the Senate.

It was learnt that the ongoing talks and negotiations have delayed the declaration of Goje for Senate Presidency. At a caucus meeting of the PDP, its senators and senators-elect, it was resolved that “all the senators-elect should stay together to study the situation until the time for the election of principal officers.”

  • APC stakeholders in verbal war over Buhari’s loss in Ondo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Commissioner for Regional Integration in Osun state, Mr Bola Ilori has accused Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as the architect of disunity within the ruling APC in Ondo state

He said the governor’s actions caused the failure of President Muhammed Buhari in the state during the last election.

According to him, his vindictive traits has aided disharmony within Ondo APC, stressing that it was strange for a man that has become Governor for years to still be grudging on an intra-party primary that preceded his tenure.

Ilori, an indigene of Ondo state in a statement noted that the open exposure of the fraud that lined his way to the Government House was never at rest.

He recalled that the party’s Appeal Panel annulled the primaries that produced Akeredolu due to glaring fraud, stressing that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party never agreed to the emergence of Akeredolu but the Oyegun/Saraki conspiracy of that era, allegedly and unilaterally submitted Akeredolu’s name to INEC and allegedly mobilized huge funds for his victory to become an’ imposed’ Governor in Ondo State.

He said “Some of us could not stand such shenanigan led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. We followed the party’s internal mechanism, but it was unilaterally terminated by the then National Chairman.

“Subsequently, we left the party in the expression of our democratic rights on the platform of another party in agitation against the clear injustice. We lost the elections.

“It was well reported on national headlines that Akeredolu organized an attack on me at the venue of an official government assignment in Akure. We were to go to court, but some elders of the party led by Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Pius Akinyelure and others intervened.

“They appealed to all aggrieved against the gubernatorial election processes to drop all further agitation and return to the party and embrace unity. The Governor thereafter organized a unity rally and I attended.

“Chief Olusola Oke has since been working hard for the success of the party and was the South West Coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign, while I, who was his Director General in the AD, was the Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (Field Operations) Door – Door Campaign throughout the Country.

“Akeredolu’s anti-party activity would have been justifiable as a payback were it to be that their mischiefs were directed against either Oke or Ilori, but neither of us were on the ballot but President Buhari and our National Assembly candidates.

“I was not holding any position in the party or government six months before and after the 2016 elections, contrary to their claims that I was in Osun Government while in AD, Osun had no cabinet for about 16 months at the time. So, dragging Aregbesola into their justification of treachery is not only based on falsehood but pure mischief”.

Speaking further, he said “I also wish to place on the record that, as the Director General of the Alliance for Democracy campaigns in 2016, I don’t have any record of funding received from Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola or Senator Ajayi Boroffice for the AD.

“I dare Akeredolu and his team to come up with such fact. Let it be noted that neither Asiwaju Tinubu nor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola directed us to the AD nor funded the party. They did not campaign for the party to the best of my record also. If any of Akeredolu minions is in possession of substantive evidence against any of our leaders let such fellow come forward with it or forever keep their peace.

“We as adult have rights to our independent actions and Tinubu never encourage sycophancy, he promotes robust intellectual discuss and don’t see dissent as a crime, yet we voluntarily owe him in high esteem.”

  • APC tackles PDP over claim on INEC server

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against celebrating the alleged confirmation of the existence of a central election results transmission server by an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official.

Relying on the video, which has gone viral, the PDP said claims by its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, of the existence and functionality of the server had been vindicated.

Atiku and the PDP are insisting that the results tendered by their lawyers at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) are the authentic presidential poll figures.

In the said video, a top INEC official was seen confirming the existence of a central election results transmission server.

The official also confirmed that the commission would put the central server to use for the presidential election.

The figures alleged to have been obtained by Atiku from the server have become the main plank of the PDP candidate’s argument before the tribunal.

In the result announced by IINEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, President Muhammadu Buhari of APC polled 15,191,847 votes to Atiku’s 11,262,978.

Buhari beat the PDP candidate with a margin of 3,928,869 votes.

But citing results from the server, Atiku claimed that he defeated Buhari with over 1.6 million votes.

The electoral umpire has since denied the existence of the server before the tribunal.

The PDP, through its spokesman, Kola Ologbodiyan, alleged that the trending video has unsettled the Presidency.

But spokesman for the Buhari Presidential Election Campaign Council Festus Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), dismissed the PDP claim as “pure entertainment”.

The tribunal, he said, would be guided by the electoral law and not by social media videos, which according to Ologbodiyan “speaks volumes about the reported denial by INEC of the existence of such a server for the 2019 general elections.”

According to the PDP spokesman, the APC team has been in a frenzy to distract the tribunal by externalising its proceedings.

He said:  ”This is in addition to the Presidency’s feverish attempt to divert public attention by engaging in judicial interpretations and hurling insults on our party and candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over our determination to retrieve our stolen mandate in court.

“The lesson for all in the latest episode is in the undying verity that no matter how long falsehood appears to thrive, the truth will always come to light and prevail at the end of the day.

”Instead of this pitiable resort to frenetic and chaotic play to the gallery, the PDP counsels President Buhari and his team to focus on facing the course of justice at the tribunal.”

Cautioning the PDP against rejoicing over unsubstantiated claims on the social media, Keyamo said the tribunal would be guided in its ruling by the electoral law.

Keyamo described the videos on INEC’s plan to transmit results to the server as mere entertainment.

He said while INEC might have planned to transmit the results electronically, what matters most is if it actually did.

The senior advocate tweeted yesterday: “Without referring to any particular pending election petition, there’s need to generally guide Nigerians not to gullibly fall for the fantasy created by any video circulating where INEC official(s) spoke of INEC’s plan to electronically transmit results before the elections.

“The video(s) of some INEC official(s) expressing intention to electronically transmit results are only circulated for entertainment. That procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines. Courts are only guided by these documents and not such videos.

“Also, what you plan to do may be different from what you actually did. Assuming INEC planned to transmit electronically, the moment it said after the election that it did not do so, the matter ends there especially as the Electoral Act & the Guidelines do not allow it to do so.”

“Without referring to any particular pending election petition, there’s a need to generally guide Nigerians not to gullibly fall for the fantasy created by any video circulating where INEC official(s) spoke of INEC’s plan to electronically transmit results before the elections.

“The video(s) of some INEC official(s) expressing intention to electronically transmit results are only circulated for entertainment. That procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines. Courts are only guided by these documents and not such videos.”

Atiku and the PDP have invited 13 presiding officers from Yobe and Borno states to testify before the tribunal. The electoral officials claimed that they uploaded results from the polling units in their states to the server.

But Keyamo alleged that some people connived with some INEC staff to upload results to the website of the electoral body, adding: “the fact that electronic transmission didn’t happen destroyed their plan”.

Keyamo said: “According to to him, those who actually planned to steal the people’s mandate are the ones crying foul.

“In anticipation of the electronic transmission, some crooks concocted fictitious results and perhaps in connivance with certain INEC insiders (or by hacking) tried to upload those results into the server. The fact that electronic transmission didn’t happen destroyed their plan.

“The irony is that the real cheats are the ones struggling to create a narrative that they were cheated; the real crooks are the ones struggling to convince everyone that the system is crooked; those who actually planned to steal the people’s mandate are the ones crying foul.

“The noise about electronic transmission of INEC results is akin to a student who wants to cheat in an exam and enters the hall with prepared answers, not noticing that the set questions are not exactly framed as expected. So, when he’s later told he failed, he says it’s impossible!

“In anticipation of the electronic transmission, some crooks concocted fictitious results and perhaps in connivance with certain INEC insiders (or by hacking) tried to upload those results into the server. The fact that electronic transmission didn’t happen destroyed their plan.”

INEC had dismissed Atiku’s claims as false, saying the results were fabricated as it never transmitted election results to its server.

  • APC kicks against life pension for Bayelsa lawmakers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has kicked against a bill passed by the House of Assembly awarding life pensions to lawmakers.

The party described the bill as unjust, ungodly and self-serving, saying it had set the public pulse racing.

Publicity Secretary Doifie Buokoribo said it was unsympathetic for the lawmakers to seek to enhance their own lives at the expense of the people living in pain and penury.

Buokoribo described the life pension bill as an unspeakable crime against our people. According to him, the party was making efforts to enthrone a regime of better life for the people of Bayelsa.

He said: “We say this latest move by the House of Assembly is avaricious, wicked, and insensitive. By proposing such a law, the lawmakers have merely portrayed themselves as a people who feel no concern for the feelings of their suffering constituents.

“They have once again confirmed that they are in cahoots with the executive in the serial impoverishment of the people of Bayelsa State.

“APC advises the legislature to withdraw the obnoxious pension bill and avoid the appalling crime against the people.

“If the legislature refuses to heed this solemn advice, we appeal to Governor Seriake Dickson, if he is still in touch with his essential humanity, to refuse to assent to the bill when it is transmitted to him.

“Failing this, the party calls on the people to embark on a campaign of peaceful resistance against the rogue assembly and the poverty regime of Governor Dickson.”

  • ‘APC should produce next Senate President, Reps Speaker’

Veteran broadcaster and politician Otunba Kunle Olasope reflects on the preparations for the election of the National Assembly officers and contends that the exercise should take cognisance of zoning and the interest of the party, which commands the majority in the parliament.

In recent weeks, conventional and social media have been awash with articles about the impending election of the principal officers of the newly elected National Assembly slated for June 10 2019. It has been a case of arguments as to the criteria and modalities for the exercise.

The points that have emerged being canvassed as necessary preconditions for those to be elected include personal merit of character, competence and integrity, federal character/zonal representation, freedom of members to elect their presiding officers, national interest, party loyalty, number of seats won by the parties in parliament, ranking of members, balance, equity and fairness, gender and age sensitivity, among others. All these criteria are reasonable and are not irreconcilable, but they must be put in the right perspectives and wisely moderated not to be counter-productive but to produce the desired results.

In the major democracies all over the world, principal officers of their legislatures are the conventional rights of the party with a majority in parliament. Nobody in the opposition parties, no matter how highly placed ever tries to upset the apple-cart. The majority parties also pay due respect and regards to the opposition office holders like Minority Leader etc. That is why it is usually said that the minority will have its say and the majority its way.

It is the duty of the parties concerned to decide which of the party members gets what position. Unfortunately here in Nigeria, the majority was so mismanaged during the 7th National Assembly that an opposition party member emerged as the Speaker. The case of the out-going      8th Assembly was more nauseating when through what normally tantamounted to anti-party activity and disloyalty, the Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives, both from the majority party played a fast one to emerge against the party arrangement. The result was that the synergy expected between the Executive arm of government and the National Assembly was not manifest one hundred percent. Often there were disagreements to the disadvantage of national interests.

That was why this time around the majority party took the bull by the horn to decide on who are to be Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives. Although in taking such an initiative, the party concerned might not have adopted the best method to consult and lobby rather than sound like dictating. Nevertheless the argument by the opposition of freedom of choice by the assembly members does not hold water. This is because, members were nominated and put forward by their political parties. Since they were not independent candidates the freedom of the members cannot be exercised to the exclusion or outside party guidelines which are based on their manifesto and programmes. It is incumbent on all members to respect their party guidelines and directives.

One final point is that any part of any zone should not take major positions in government and parliament to the exclusion of other parts. Ekiti State had won all the elections for the ruling party at the centre. What then is its gain? Care must be taken to be fair and equitable. Anything else will not be good enough and may portent division and danger for the ruling party.

  • Oyetola, APC, INEC urge Appeal Court to uphold Osun election

OSUN State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to uphold the governor’s victory in the governorship election held on September 22 and 27, 2018.

Their request was contained in three separate appeals they filed against the  majority judgment given by the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal on March 22, 2019.

The tribunal had, in the majority judgment, given by two of its three members upheld the petition by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the election, Senator Ademola Adeleke and voided Oyetola and APC’s victory.

In their appeals, argued yesterday, Oyetola, the APC and INEC prayed the five-man panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Jummai Sankey, to set aside the majority decision of the tribunal, uphold their appeals and dismiss the October 16, 2018 petition by Adeleke and the PDP.

They equally urged the court to dismiss the cross-appeal filed by Adeleke, on the grounds that it is unmeritorious.

In the appeal by Oyetola, his lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), faulted the reasons given by the tribunal in reaching the judgment appealed against, arguing that the decision was not supported by the evidence led by the petitioners.

He urged the court to void the judgment because the judge, Justice Peter Obiorah, who wrote and delivered it, did not participate in all the proceedings of the tribunal.

Olanipekun noted that “the judge, who did not sit, came to write the lead judgment and reviewed the evidence of February 6, 2019 proceedings, where he was absent”.

“Adjudication is like video watching. It cannot be done by proxy. The judge cannot analyse the evidence of a witness, whose demeanour he did not observe. The judgment should be declared a nullity on this ground alone,” he said.

Olanipekun, who said he and some named senior lawyers were at the tribunal  on February 6, 2019, faulted the argument by lawyer to Adeleke and the PDP that it was not clear from the record of proceedings, whether or not Justice Obiorah was absent on the particular day.

He argued that the judge’s failure to sign at the end of the proceedings on February 6, 2019, was enough evidence to justify the appellant’s claim that Justice Obiorah was absent on the day in question.

Olanipekun also faulted the tribunal’s cancellation of results in 17 polling units in the state, and noted that the petitioners did not tender any result of the election before the tribunal.

Read also: Osun election dispute: Appeal Court fixes hearing for tomorrow

He  argued that the tribunal went beyond its powers by annulling  results in the 17 polling units to justify the judgment it gave in favour of the petitioners.

Lawyer to the APC, Akin Olujinmi (SAN), while arguing the party’s appeal, contended that the tribunal was wrong to have allowed the petition, which was incurably incompetent.

“The 1st and 2nd respondents  sought to be declared winner of the election, held on September 22, 2018, which was declared inconclusive. They also asked the tribunal to void the rerun election held on September 27, 2018, because they believed it was unlawful.

“You cannot say you should be declared a winner on the election that you said was unlawful and void,” the senior lawyer said.

Olujinmi accused the tribunal of exceeding its jurisdiction when it engaged in amending the petitioners’ reliefs to make them grantable.

“No tribunal has the jurisdiction to reframe, amend or formulate reliefs for the petitioners.

“On realising that the reliefs could not be granted, they (members of the tribunal) amended the reliefs and granted it by themselves.

“We are saying the tribunal has no power to amend a petitioner’s reliefs. The much they ought to do, on realising that the reliefs could not be granted, was to have dismissed the petition.”

He faulted the tribunal for holding that the petitioners proved its case of non-compliance in respect of the polling units where it voided results.

Lawyer to INEC Yusuf Ali (SAN), who argued in a similar manner, contended that the tribunal erred in its majority judgment, particularly as regards the issue of non-compliance.

He noted that the tribunal, having found that accreditation was properly done and that all witnesses agreed that the votes scored were not affected by the omissions noted in some result sheets, ought not to have voided any results.

Citing Section 134 (b) of the Electoral Act, Ali argued that  non-compliance means not compliance with the provision of the Act, not an act of omission on the part of INEC officials,  which are not contrary to the provision of the Act.

Ali also argued that since the tribunal held that the petitioners did not prove over-voting and non-compliance, it ought not to have turned around to void votes in some polling units.

On the question of why INEC did not call it witnesses at the tribunal, Ali said it was unnecessary because the petitioners did not discharge the burden of proof placed on them by the law to warrant INEC to call fresh witnesses.

Lawyer to Adeleke and the PDP, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), faulted the three appeals and the arguments proffered by Olanipekun, Olujinmi and Ali.

Ikpeazu argued that the tribunal was right in its decision to have declared Adeleke and his party as the winner of the election.

He faulted the argument that Justice Obiorah did not participate in all the proceedings of the tribunal, arguing that there was no sufficient evidence to that effect.

Ikpeazu urged the court to dismiss the three appeals and uphold the judgment of the tribunal.

Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN),  who argued Adeleke’s cross-appeal, urged the court to allow his client’s appeal and reverse the portion of the judgment, where the tribunal rejected the evidence the petitioners lead in relation to six polling units.

Ogunwumiju argued that the tribunal wrongly excluded some of its evidence, because while it called 23 witnesses to prove it’s allegation of non-compliance in 23 polling units, the tribunal only upheld 17 where it voided elections.

Olanipekun, Olujinmi and Ali argued that the cross-appeal was incompetent on several grounds and urged the tribunal to reject it.

At the conclusion of proceedings that lasted over eight hours, the presiding judge, Justice Sankey, said judgments would be reserved till a later date.

She told the parties that the date of the judgment would be communicated to them by the court’s Registry.

Other members of the court’s five-man panel are: Justices Abubakar Datti Yahaya, Ita George Mbaba, Isaiah Olufemi Akeju and Bitrus Sanga.

  • Edo 2020: PDP, APC in battle royal

The governorship election will hold in Edo State next year. There is a realignment of forces in the two major parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Aspirants are warming up for the race, Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR reports.

A COLD war is on within the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the governorship tickets for next year’s election. The first term tenure of Governor Godwin Obaseki will expire in November next year and various aspirants are  warming up to contest against him.

Candidates that contested on the platform of the APC and the PDP in 2016 are Governor Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. They are now battling the intrigues within their  parties ahead of next year’s polls.

    APC

Within the APC, it is a battle between ‘the Establishment boys and Abuja politicians’. The clock is ticking for the Edo State chapter of the APC. There are fears of an implosion in the Edo APC over the governorship ticket. In a few months’ time, those against a second term ticket for Obaseki will come out in full blast. The governor has not declared his intention to run for a second term, but his supporters are already propelling him to seek re-election.

There are also indications that he might be denied the ticket, because there is a huge divide between the leaders of Edo APC on whether or Obaseki should be given the nod for a fresh mandate. The battle is between those regarded as ‘Establishment boys and Abuja politicians’. Establishment boys are those  appointed by Obaseki or perceived to be benefiting from the administration. Abuja politicians are those not happy with Obaseki’s style of governance and claim that they were neglected after working to install the government. They are also known as boys of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole who is also National Chairman of the APC. Some political appointees have indicated that their offices have become redundant because they are regarded as Oshiomhole boys.

Those interested in contesting against Obaseki for the APC ticket are General Charles Airhiavbere, Dr. Pius Odubu and Chris Ogiemwonyi. Those allegedly penciled down to replace Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor are Philip Ugheoke, Johnson Oghuma and Abbas Braimah.

There is no rift yet between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, but to the party leaders on both divides, the cold war is real. Oshiomhole has kept his plans to his chest, even though some APC leaders are waiting for directives from the National Chairman before declaring their support for any aspirant. The outcome of the presidential and National Assembly elections in Edo State shocked Obaseki when he got reports of how some APC leaders sabotaged the election because they were allegedly neglected.

The sins of the governor, in the view of some APC leaders, are many. Top on the list is that Obaseki is stingy. They see his governance style as an attempt to create an eldorado when hunger is biting them. Some claim that he wants to retire them and raise new leaders from their domains. There are complaints of no appointments into various boards of ministries and parastatals. Contracts and juicy appointments are given to those who did not work for the party and non-party members from Lagos State, according to them. They also accuse Obaseki of having no regards for Oshiomhole and other party chieftains.

An APC chieftain who confided in our reporter said there was no rift between Obaseki and Oshiomhole. He said those attempting to build a wall between Obaseki and Oshiomhole thought they would benefit more when the two leaders are fighting.

Another chieftain said Obaseki was more focused on working for the people rather than his second term ticket. The source said the coast would be clear from November after Obaseki’s second year anniversary.

Meanwhile, support for Obaseki is swelling by the day. A political group, the Edo Elites, comprising notable leaders of the APC, academics and professionals, began the campaign to ward off any aspirant from reaching out to them, by printing exercise books and other items to be distributed across the state. The inscription on one of the books reads: “GGO Year 2020. 4+4 loading and Continue to give us more of the developments in Edo State.”

Last month, leaders of the APC in Oredo Local Government Area dumped their son Airhiavbere to adopt Obaseki as the sole candidate of the party for next year’s governorship election. A communique issued at the end of the Oredo APC meeting by the Chairman, Godwin Alabi, reads: “Considering the pace of development in different sectors of Edo State, from infrastructure to education, industrialisation, civil service and judicial reform, prompt payment of pensioners and civil servants emoluments, among others, we are convinced beyond doubt that the only way to sustain the current rapid growth is to ensure that Governor Obaseki continue as governor.

“We, therefore, with full sense of responsibility call on him to run for 2nd term and thereby adopt Governor Obaseki as the sole candidate in the forthcoming 2020 election. We will ensure as, leaders of the party in Oredo, our readiness to pull our resources together to ensure that Governor Obaseki not only fly the flag of the party in governorship election, but as governor for second term.”

Last week, the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party rose from its meeting to pass a vote of confidence on Governor Obaseki, because of unprecedented achievements of winning all the 24 seats in the State House of Assembly during the last general election.

Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Azebamwan, who signed the communique after the SEC meeting, said the party would continue to sustain its commitment to give Obaseki the needed support to keep it focused and on track.

A huge billboard close General Airhiavbere’s GRA residence suggests that he is interested in the 2020 governorship. The billboard reads: “Hope is still alive”. He has been suspended from the APC for alleged anti-party activities, but he has insisted on contesting the governorship primary against Obaseki.

    PDP

The victory of the APC in the last presidential election has compelled the PDP to return to the drawing board on who will be its candidate for next year’s election. Some leaders said Pastor Ize-Iyamu is no longer keen on contesting for the governorship, because of the outcome of the presidential election.

Before the last general elections, Ize-Iyamu had always emphasised the need to focus on winning the presidential election, which he believed would enhance the party’s chances of clinching the Edo governorship. At various occasions, Ize-Iyamu had been introduced as the Edo Governor in-waiting. In 2018, when the party undertook a thank you tour of the 18 local government areas, its chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, had insisted that Pastor Ize-Iyamu remained the party’s candidate until the court ruled on a suit challenging Obaseki’s qualification.

Orbih, who said he could not abandon Ize-Iyamu in the middle of the river, stated that until Ize-Iyamu gets into that position (governor) he would not be tired of supporting him.

He added: “Even if I am no longer chairman of the PDP, I will still support him. It is proper for me to do what I am doing now. This is because we still have a pre-election matter in court, challenging the qualification of Governor Obaseki. Until the case is decided, he remains a candidate of the PDP. Until that case is decided, we will accord him all privileges.”

Some PDP members are, however, rooting for Senator Matthew Urhoghide or Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, the member representing Oredo in the House of Representatives, to be given the party’s ticket. They allege that there is no love lost between Orbih and Ize-Iyamu.

The PDP is believed to be waiting for the APC to commit a political blunder as it did in the National Assembly elections for it to return to power in the state. Members of the Edo APC are watching to see where the pendulum will swing, as regards the imaginary fight between Oshiomhole and Obaseki.

  • Forum backs APC’s endorsement of Gbajabiamila as Speaker

The Northwest Coordinator of Forum of New Members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibrahim  Almustapha Aliyu, has confirmed the forum’s unanimous support for and endorsement of House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the incoming Ninth Assembly by the party.

Aliyu addressed reporters yesterday in Sokoto on the speakership of the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker said the action of the forum was to uphold party’s supremacy, bolster democracy and ensure stability at the Green Chamber.

Saying the forum has 164 members, he added: “We toe the party’s line; we have endorsed the choice of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the Ninth Assembly.

“We are also restating our unalloyed loyalty and commitment to our great party. This, we do, also to ensure that the laudable policies and programmes of the indefatigable and incorruptible President Muhammadu Buhari sail through in the general interests of Nigerians.”

Aliyu said the forum was taking advantage of its large membership, which constitutes a significant number of the 360-member House.

“This is without the 67 APC returning members. This gives us a comfortable majority.

“The forum aims to prevent the ugly development of the Eighth National Assembly, where we tended to tender on a platter of gold our leadership to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by electing persons with uncertain and unstable loyalty to positions of leadership.

“This virtually affected the noble objectives and policies of the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,” he said.

Aliyu averred that the forum was formed to show appreciation to the invaluable gesture of the party for giving its members the opportunity to run on its platform.

He said: “Having been elected and given the mandate freely by the electorate, we need to pay back. We have to remain loyal as well as uphold the lofty ideals of the APC.”

  • APC youths accuse Gaya of anti-party activities

A pro-Muhammadu Buhari group in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Next Level Youths for Buhari, has accused the senator representing Kano South, Kabiru Gaya, of aligning with some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elements to canvass for the adoption of the open secret ballot to elect the Senate President for the Ninth National Assembly.

In a statement at the weekend by the its Convener and former House of Representatives member, Durosinmi Meseko, the group said it had compelling reasons to believe that Gaya might be one of the 13 APC senators reported in a national daily to have been lured to support the scheme by the PDP as well as the opposition’s proposed candidate for the position.

“When we read the report in some national dailies about how 13 senators-elect from the APC had been approached with mouth-watering promises to jettison the position of the party on Senator Ahmed Lawan and the adoption of open balloting system, we never believed it until Senator Kabiru Gaya recently granted OAK TV Hausa version an interview where he openly canvassed for secret balloting in the election of the Ninth Senate President.

“What is Senator Gaya hiding from his constituents, the party that sponsored him and the public that he wants to do secretly? He has indirectly opposed the position of the party without minding the consequences of anti-party activities.

“We hereby call on the leadership of the APC to call Senator Kabiru Gaya to order to retrace his steps immediately or face recall by his constituents.

“We all know that the ground norm of parliamentary practices all over the world in electing principal officers and other voting processes is to vote openly, because in most climes, your voting record in the chambers or within the parliament determines your re-election or otherwise.

“That was what the Senate Rule, officially adopted in the Seventh Assembly until another one was forged in the Eighth Assembly. And to further his anti-party actions, Senator Gaya defended the indefensible by supporting those who forged the Eighth Senate Rule Book, saying it was legitimately adopted!

“The party should be very firm this time with perfidy within its fold. Party discipline should no longer be taken for granted, as in the case of Senator Gaya.”

The statement wondered “why Senator Gaya would show such open disregard for the leader of our party, President Muhammadu Buhari, by openly opposing him”.

It urged Kano South electorate to brace up for a recall action against Senator Gaya if he does not retrace his steps forthwith”.

  • APC urges Sokoto Govt to stop alleged workers victimisation

The All Progressive Congress (APC), Sokoto state Chapter has appealed to the state government to curtail alleged political victimisation of civil servants in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Sokoto,  the party Chairman Alhaji Isa Achida, said that the chapter had been receiving complaints from the state and local government workers on various forms of political victimisation.

He said the victimisation ranged from refusal to be paid their salaries, punitive posting or outright removal from office without any posting.

“Investigation carried out by our party has confirmed that these series of victimisation have to our dismay, actually taken place in many government ministries.

“This particularly concerns state Ministry of Health, Information, Water resources and or its agencies as well as the government House.

“It has similarly taken place in many local government areas of the state. The worst affected departments are local government education authority, health and the administration department,” he said.

Achida added that the resultant loss of morale among civil servants was widespread, including those who are not yet affected.

“This will go a long way in dampening the general morale of civil service in the state. As stakeholders in the overall development of the state, we would like to volunteer some counseling to the government.

“That no matter the amount you pay a civil servants, his motivation and security of tenure will play a more significant role in determining his output,” he added.

He appealed to the teeming APC supporters in the state civil service, particularly those effected to continue to persevere.

“We assure you that our party will go to any length to ensure that justice is done and that your rights and privileges are fully restored.” (NAN)
