  • ‘Enough of PDP, APC ‘misrule’

Presidential candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Yabagi Yusuf Sani has urged Nigerians to vote against candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next month election.

According to him,the two ‘biggest’  political parties had failed the nation and should not be trusted with governance again.

Sani spoke in Akure, Ondo state capital, during his visit to the leader of Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

He insisted that both parties were not the best for the country and should be jettisoned.

The presidential candidate noted that the APC-led  administration and President Muhammadu Buhari could not manage the economy of the nation.

According to him, Nigeria is endowed with natural resources that can rank the nation among the leading country of the world but observed that the country is blessed with leaders who lacked capacity to turn the nation around.

Sani said  “the nation oil and gas sector should adequately take care of other sector, like health, education and even economy and there is no reason this country should be poor.

“The experience we have in the oil and gas sector is a terrible one and all indices shown that activities in the sector has nosedived, we should be today ranked among the developed country and not developing country.

“But the most disorganised sector sector today is oil and gas and this sector can be used to develop other sector and reposition this country because we have no reason to be poor.”

Sani said the country was getting worse under the APC government, insisting that the present administration had failed in all sectors, while  Nigerians did not have any reason to be poor, but said ADP government would fight poverty to a standstill.

The ADP Presidential candidate stressed the need for the restructuring of the country, saying this is the only way out of the myriads of challenges confronting the country.

Fasoranti hailed the ADP presidential candidate for embracing restructuring, praying for the success of his aspiration.

  • APC on rescue mission in Benue

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Benue State, Hon Emmanuel Jime, has said that the party is on a rescue mission in the state.

Jime said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in the state wasted over N402 billion that accrued to the state without anything to show for the huge funds.

He noted that it is obvious that the state is in ruins with debilitating decayed infrastructure in all facets of the state.

The governorship hopeful stated this in speech at the Jime/Ode Campaign Organisation fundraising held in Abuja

He noted that Benue State is a dire situation nearing tipping point hence must be rescued before it is too late.

Jime said, “our dear state of Benue is in a dire situation, nearing tipping point. If you’ve all followed the history of Benue as I suspect you have, you’d agree it used to be one state that held its own among the units that make up Nigeria.

“We were known for our resourcefulness, innovation, agriculture and most importantly our ‘can-do’ spirit. Benue easily could pass as one of, if not, the most developed state in northern Nigeria. And I speak not just of infrastructure but human development as well. We strode the Nigerian public life with confidence and respect.

“We had industries that boomed, our population was a bubbly one that worked hard and loved the good life. On the political scene, Benue was one to be reckoned with. Political players at the highest level courted us in the knowledge our support easily translated to success.

  • Yari hails Zamfara APC court judgement

Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari on Friday claimed victory over one of the rulings in the case instituted over the conduct of primaries by the state branch of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

While the Federal High Court in Abuja affirmed the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to refuse the party’s candidates in the election following the lack of compliance to rules, a Zamfara State High Court on the same day validated the congress conducted by the Yari-led faction of the APC.

Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday, the governor thanked God “for answering our prayers of seeking for justice.”

He said: “You remember sometimes in October, we have been struggling whether there were primaries or not in Zamfara state with INEC, even though we believed that we had undergone all the processes and today, God did it once again for us by giving us victory.

“The court accepted that Zamfara APC conducted its primaries and based on the witnesses presented in court.

“So, we Zamfara people are happy with the outcome and we thank the department of justice and the judges who stood on their ground to ensure that justice is granted.”

The governor said the judgement had not come late as many other cases remained in court even as the elections approach.

According to him: “It is not too late. Some of us that were given opportunity or encouraged by the president to go and seek for justice some of them are still in court. So, this victory for today is not late,

“I can tell you in the entire Nigeria, Zamfara is one of the states that APC is sure of 90 percent.

“If I decide today not to go back to Zamfara, you will see what will happen on 16th of February because people are waiting.

“How can a system, which has been running since 1999, and just overnight you want to scrap them aside in order for them not to participate in the election? That is unfair.”

He affirmed that there were two positions enunciated by the Zamfara court judgement.

He said: “But let me also thank INEC because there are two conflicting statements, one national, one state.

“The state INEC went round and conducted and supervised as allowed by law.

“Unfortunately the INEC at the national did not wait to receive the report of the Zamfara state INEC represented by the REC.

“And they went ahead to give the pronouncement but anyway INEC came to court to say they witnessed the APC primary election and we secured certified true copy from INEC and presented to the court.

“That I think is the document that supported the court in their processes to pass the judgment.

“So, we thank God for giving us this victory and we attribute this to justice.

“Some people have been saying that the reign of Governor Abdulaziz Yari is over but I believe the almighty God can give power to whosoever he desires to give it to and he will sustain the power for whomsoever he desires to have it.”

On the seeming conflicting judgements from the two courts, he also explained: “There are two judgments, one party has gone to court here in Abuja seeking that they should be given right to write names and submit to INEC and the judge said ‘what madness, what is the use of INEC?

“We court judges and the Act section 87 is very clear. What the party said they were looking for, they have done primaries in consensus.”

He said the party which went to Abuja Court did not have any legal consensus.

  • Court okays INEC’s rejection of Zamfara APC’s candidates

A Federal High Court in Abuja has held the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acted within its powers by refusing to accept list of candidates for the next general elections from the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu said it was not the fault of INEC that the APC failed to conduct a valid primary within the period scheduled by the electoral body.

Justice Onjukwu said INEC’s action was intended to curb impunity among political parties and politicians; ensure that rule of law is adhered to.

The judgment was on a suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1279/2018, filed in the name of APC by some individuals, who said they emerged from a consensus arrangement adopted by the party in Zamfara State.

Justice Ojukwu, who dismissed the case for being without merit, noted that evidence presented before the court by parties did not show that the APC conducted its primaries within INEC’s published schedule of activities, which required parties to conduct their primaries and submit list of candidates within August 18 and October 7, 2018

The judge said the decision of the APC in Zamfara to select its candidates through a consensus option, breached the provision of the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

Justice Ojukwu said, by the fact before the court, it could not be held that INEC acted ultra vires by rejecting Zamfara APC’s candidates’ list.

The judge added that INEC’s decision was to deter impunity and ensure that the right thing was done and the provisions of the law complied with by political parties.

She said: “The intendment of the law is that due process must be followed. The 1st defendant’s (INEC’s) action was to ensure that the party complies with rule of law.”

The judge said it was obvious that, as at the close of nomination for the 2019 elections, according to INEC guideline, the party (APC) had no candidates, having failed to conduct legitimate primary.

Earlier, Justice Ojukwu dismissed the preliminary objection brought against the suit and held that there was no similarity between the case before her court and the one pending before the High Court of Justice, Zamfara State, marked: ZMS/GS/52/2018 filed on December 6, 2018by Alhaji Babandida Abdullahi, Chairman, APC, Gusau Local Government and others against the APC and others.

While Justice Ojukwu was delivering judgment in the case in Abuja, Justice Muhammad Bello Shinkafi of Court 3, High of Zamfara State in Gusau, also rendered judgment in the suit by Alhaji Abdullahi and held that the APC actually has candidates having conducted valid primaries between October 3 and 7, 2018.

Justice Shinkafi proceeded to order INEC to accept the candidates produced by the primaries as APC candidates in Zamfara for all positions in the forthcoming general elections.

A certified-true-copy (CTC) of the judgment certificate signed by an Alhaji Lawali Sanda Kaura (Assitant Director), sighted by The Nation on Friday, indicated that the court granted all the prayers by the plaintiffs.

It reads in part: “Now, on the strength of evidence adduced by the plaintiff, the evidence elicited from both DWS1 and 2 during cross-examination, as well as the documentary evidence tendered and admitted in evidence, I am satisfied that the plaintiffs have proved their case against the defendants.

“Consequently therefore, the above issue for determination formulating is hereby. Answered in the affirmative and all the reliefs claimed by the plaintiffs are hereby granted.

“An order declaring as lawful and valid the primary election conducted by the APC (herein plaintiffs’ party) under the supervision of the 3rd defendant (INEC) and security agents on the 3rd and 7th October 2018 for the purpose of producing candidates to vie for various offices, which produce the plaintiffs, under the platform of the 1st defendant.” The court also order INEC to “accept and accord due recognition to the list of the candidate that emerged as winners” in the primaries of the 3rd and 7th October 2018

The court also ordered the 1st defendant (APC) to “recognise and accept the list of candidates that emerged as winners” in the primaries.

The court further granted a perpetual order of injunction restraining the defendants and their agents “from taking any steps towards cancelling/rejecting the result of the primary election held on the 3rd and 7th of October 2018 and monitored by the 3rd defendant.”

Lawyer to the plaintiff in the Zamfara case, Mahmud Magaji (SAN) said, with the judgment of January 25 given in his clients’ favour, INEC cannot afford not to accepts the list of candidates that emerged from the primaries that the court has said were valid.

  • APC to Ndigbo: Atiku has nothing but deceit to offer you

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) on Friday warned the Southeast and leadership of the Ohaneze Ndigbo the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had nothing but deceit to offer them.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was reacting to the Thursday endorsement of Atiku by Ohanaeze, told reporters in Abuja that the action of the group was a grave mistake aimed at deceiving the people.

Issa-Onilu said those present at the meeting were probably friends of the former Vice President who he had promised to make rich when he elected, adding that from the reaction of Igbo leaders, it was clear that the endorsement did not command the support of a cross section of the people of the geo political zone.

He dismissed Atiku’s restructuring plan as a convenient, simplistic and populist gimmick aimed at whipping up and exploiting perceived sentiments ahead of this year’s elections

He said: “We find it curious that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has tactically avoided speaking on his touted restructuring plans during his campaigns.

“Our observation comes against the backdrop of the now disputed ‘communique’ issued by some members of Ohaneze Ndigbo on the 2019 general elections.

“With a few members of Ohaneze falling for Atiku’s antics, it has now become clear that the purported endorsement of Atiku’s presidential ambition does not enjoy the support of most of the Igbos.

“One of such proofs is the statement by the Anambra State Government’s dissociating the state from the dubious endorsement of Atiku contained in the equally disputed communique.

“It would now seem that a few people in Ohaneze are trying to misrepresent the interest of the Ndigbo and we wonder whether these people are part of Atiku’s friends that he has promised to make rich as a cardinal policy of his government. Many questions beg for answers.

“Besides the deceitful restructuring promise, what else do the Igbo stand to gain from an Atiku presidency? Nothing!

“Could it be that Atiku and the PDP’s restructuring rhetoric are selective and bespoke for specific audiences? The answer is yes!

“Atiku’s restructuring rhetoric is simply a convenient, simplistic and populist gimmick aimed at whipping up and exploiting perceived sentiments ahead of the 2019 elections.

“Ndigbo and indeed all Nigerians must be wary of Atiku and his PDP ilk who, in their desperate quest for power, are ever ready to play fraudulent political games and parade themselves as ethnic champions to the gullible. We must protect the sanctity of our nationhood.

“Atiku has refused to speak on the nature of the restructuring that he is cashing in on.

“But little wonder because he is transactional in nature. Atiku has no plan for this country and he is not pretending about it.

“He has said it clearly and on many occasions that he is seeking power to be able to sell off national assets to make his friends and himself rich.

“There is no doubt that Atiku only intends to use and dump the Igbo people.

“Ndigbo should not forget that it was during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku as vice that Nigeria’s political history witnessed the frequent manipulated changes to the Senate Presidency and setting of Igbo brothers against one another for political gains.

  • Nwobodo dumps APC for PDP

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Jim Nwobodo has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) less than 24 hours after Ohaneze Ndigbo endorsed the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

The former governor of old Anambra state announced his return to the PDP when some members of the Ohanaeze led by former chairman of Police Service Commission, Chief S. N. Okeke visited him in his Amechi Awkunanaw country home.

In the entourage were the secretary to the Abia State government Prof. Eme Okoro; former Foreign Affairs minister, Chief Dubem Onyia; Senator Ben Obi; former Minister for Health Prof. A. B. C. Nwosu; Oseloka Obaze and late Dr. Ekwueme’s daughter, Mrs. Ada Onyemelukwe.

They all appealed to Nwobodo to come back “to the house which he built.”

Nwobodo, replying, saying: “I am back to PDP.”

According to him: “At this stage of my life, I see myself more as an elder statesman than a partisan politician and I speak from this standpoint.

“I have served our country both at the state and the federal level. In the course of my political journey from second republic till date, I have had my fair share of ups and downs.

“I made mistakes and learned from my mistakes, I have learned a lot from my experiences and feel qualified to speak on burning issues confronting us as a nation.

“I cannot pretend that all is well in our country today with the escalating crisis, ranging from the economy, insecurity, tension among the three arms of government – executive, legislative and judiciary.

“Dangerous divisions along tribal and religious lines, and different militant groups arising from the hues and cries ofmarginalisation.

“What we are seeing are symptoms of deep rooted issues that should be brought to the table for discussions on how to address them.

“I am a democrat and a strong believer in democracy. Those of us who claim to be democrats have a duty to tell the president the truth and advise him appropriately.

“I have been chief executive of a big state and I appreciate how difficult it could be for the chief executive of a state or a country to know the true situation of things with the people you govern.”

He went on: “Just a few of the many undemocratic moves and sayings that are capable of igniting crisis.

“As a member of APC and a democrat, I got visibly worried when I heard party members boasting we have won the election and just waiting for results to be announced.

“My question was how? How? How was the election won when the elections are yet to take place?

“One of the tenets of democracy is the division of power among the different independent arms of government.

“The desecration of any of these arms of government portends danger to democracy.

“The ongoing attempt to arraign and prosecute the chief justice of the federation in disregard to due process is a mockery of the judiciary, which is the last hope of the common man.

“It is even more worrisome to read in the papers that President was not aware of such moves.

“Now that the President is aware, he should please intervene and stop the desecration of judiciary and restore respect for the rule of law. We are all aware of the implications of disrespect for the rule of law and its dangerous consequences.

“No genuine investor will take us serious and our image as country will be seriously bruised.

  • APC decides 2023 presidency, says Chime

Former Enugu State Governor, Mr Sullivan Chime says the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will have the final say on the zone that gets the president in 2023.

Chime disclosed this on Thursday night in Enugu while fielding questions from newsmen following the campaign tour of President Muhammadu Buhari in the state.

The former governor said that the appropriate organ of the party would make the decision at the appropriate time.

He said that the party was currently preoccupied with the reelection of Buhari.

Chime allayed the fears in certain quarters that the South West was positioning to usurp the chance of the South East to produce the president in 2023.

“At the appropriate time the party will take a final decision. However, we have always been of the view that we have the reason to say it will come to us.

The reason is simple: Power is shared between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The South West and South South had taken their turns remaining the South East,” he said.

Chime, however, said that the South East must work to justify its clamour to produce the president in 2023.

He called on the people of the zone to vote massively for Buhari in the Feb. 16 presidential election to stand the chance.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Director General of Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi had at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium during the APC presidential campaign said the South East will produce the president in 2023.

  • Osinbajo: APC will take Nigeria to Next Level

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday visited the first Executive Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, at his Ilupeju home in Mushin Local Government Area.

The vice-president, who held a closed-door meeting with the former governor and his family, was in Lagos for the continuation of his door-to-door campaign ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

He was accompanied by the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, House of Representatives Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, Senator Ganiyu Solomon and the Speacial Adviser (SA) to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, among others.

The vice-president was ushered into Jakande’s home by a huge crowd of party supporters in APC uniform.

They chanted the praises of President Muhammadu Buhari and Prof Osinbajo.

Solomon, who addressed reporters on the visit, said APC was sure of victory, despite the blackmail by its traducers.

The senator said Nigerians have seen the party’s performance in the last four years, adding that its people-oriented programmes have endeared the party to the people.

According to him, despite the performance of the APC, its candidates have been campaigning vigorously to showcase the party’s achievements and convince the electorate to vote for continuity.

Osinbajo also visited some party leaders in Mushin and major markets in Mushin and Surulere local government areas.

In Surulere, Osinbajo said APC will take Nigeria to greater heights.

He urged the electorate to vote massively for the party in the February 16 and March 2 elections.

“APC is taking Nigeria higher and higher. We are not stopping. Our country is going higher. Come February 16, vote for APC,” he said.

The vie-president also urged Nigerians to vote for all APC candidates in the February 16 and March 2 polls.

Also, Gbajabiamila urged party members to unite and work for its success in the forthcoming elections.

Sanwo-Olu said: “On February 16 and March 2, let us make sure we vote for APC because APC is going to take us to the Next Level. We are going higher and higher. We should also vote for President Buhari, Gbajabiamila and Desmond Elliot.”

  • ‘Lagos is better under APC’

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Lagos State House of Assembly Alimosho Constituency 02, Mr. Kehinde Joseph, has assured Lagosians that they will not regret voting for the ruling party in the coming elections.

Addressing reporters at the APC flag off campaign in Alimosho recently, he said the APC has become a winning team in Lagos, because the state has witnessed remarkable development under the successive administrations of the party.

Joseph said a good coach would not temper with such a team, because, according to him, Lagosians have never had it so good. He said all the candidates contesting on the platform of the party have what it takes to deliver on their promises.

He said: “We have our Senator Adeola Olamilekan, Oluwafemi Adebanjo and Bisi Yusuf present at this flag off campaign. We are tested party men and have passion to render service to the people.

“We are talking about continuity, the next level and that is the reason we are here. As you can see, there is no problem and nobody is fighting. All members are happy to see us here for the purpose of the election.”

The APC candidate said he was propelled to contest the election because he wants to serve. He added: “This is where I grew up; I understand the place very well and would probably say this is my life. Since I have this connection with the people, I should be able to make impact in their lives. This is my community and primary constituency. Therefore, it is their betterment that I seek. I have a name to protect and integrity to maintain. These are parts of the motivation. It is equally part of the effort to continue to develop Lagos State.”

Joseph described the fracas at the APC rally in Ikeja as unfortunate, noting the adequate security have been put in place to forestall future occurrence.

He said: “What happened has nothing to do with our party; there is no link. It was simply the problem of the union who were trying to settle scores. The APC is a party of peace and harmony that is what we have been preaching. For instance, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has been moving from house-to-house campaigning, and there have been no security challenges.

“The people have always voted APC and that is what we expect them to do. The APC Alimosho has promised to deliver 500,000 votes. We are not relenting on the promise made and we are determined to deliver on what we promised. It is only APC that exist in Alimosho, other parties do not exist.”
