PAF rallies support for APC candidates

Progressives Action Forum has said it will secure victory for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at a briefing at Lafiaji Hall, Obalende, Convener and Apex Leader, Chief Sumbo Onitiri, reaffirmed the group’s loyalty to APC and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing tomorrow’s poll as pivotal to deepening democracy and development at the grassroots.

Onitiri said: “The local government is the closest tier to the people. These elections are not just political; they are about empowerment of our people, deepening of democracy, and consolidation of Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He praised APC Lagos State leadership, led by Cornelius Ojelabi, for conducting peaceful and transparent primaries.

Onitiri noted that the process produced “credible, tested, and trusted” candidates poised to deliver party ideals.

Recognising the competitive nature of primaries, he appealed the aggrieved to be loyal, warning that disloyalty or anti-party behaviour won’t be tolerated.

“The party is supreme. Undermining our candidates is working against the party,” he said.

PAF, according to Onitiri, has launched a House-to-House Mobilization Campaign across all wards in Lagos. Trained canvassers have been deployed to engage voters in markets, streets, and communities in a bid to drive voter turnout and consolidate support for APC candidates.

“We are not leaving anything to chance. We are mobilizing, educating, and activating every vote for APC,” he said.

Onitiri also lauded the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance local governance, particularly the proposed transition of LCDAs to fully autonomous local governments, stating that “only the APC has the political will to make this a reality.”

He highlighted key national reforms under President Tinubu which including the removal of fuel subsidy, the launch of the student loan scheme and foreign exchange stabilization and they are part of a broader roadmap to rebuild the nation’s economy.

He also commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, calling him a “silent achiever” whose technocratic governance has made Lagos a model state.

Amid political rumblings about new opposition coalitions, Onitiri dismissed them as mere distractions, declaring unwavering support for President Tinubu’s leadership and expressing confidence in his reelection.

“President Tinubu will complete his first term in resounding success. And by the grace of God and the will of Nigerians, he shall return for a second term,” he declared to applause.

Concluding, the PAF leader urged Lagosians across all demographics to come out en masse on Saturday and vote APC across all positions, describing it as “a vote for progress, development, and national rebirth.”

“Let us show once again that Lagos is and remains the stronghold of progressive politics,” Onitiri said

A’Ibom APC stakeholders reject automatic tickets for NASS members

A group of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Akwa Ibom has rejected the pronouncement by Governor Umo Eno to give automatic tickets to National Assembly members from the state.

In a petition to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, the stakeholders under the aegis of the Concerned Members of the APC, said that the Governor’s plan was not only undemocratic but negates the Constitution of the party.

The group warned that if the Governor goes ahead with his plan, the APC in the state will erupt in crisis between legacy members and new members, adding that Tinubu must take steps to avert the impending situation.

The petition signed by representatives from the 10 federal constituencies of the state raised the alarm that the development will annihilate legacy members of the party which stood by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Among the signatories to the petition are: Anthony James-Uyo federal constituency; Chief Effiong Etim-Itu federal constituency; Uwem Thompson-Abak federal constituency; Peter Okon-Ikot Ekpene federal constituency; Obong Stephen Umoh-Etinan federal constituency; Etim Asuquo-Oron federal constituency and Comrade Victor Ubom-Eket federal constituency.

Others are: Bernard Etim-Ikono/Ini federal constituency; Pastor Dennis James-Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency and Obong Etim Ekpo-Ikot Abasi federal constituency.

The petition reads in parts: “We, the Concerned Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, write to bring to your attention a pressing matter of grave concern regarding the recent pronouncement by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on automatic tickets for all incumbent National and State Assembly members.

Read Also: Countdown to Lagos Council poll Obasa urges residents to vote for APC

“This pronouncement is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and a flagrant disregard for the APC Constitution and the position of the National leadership of the party.

“It will lead to a mass exodus of members to the opposition and a woeful performance in the next election cycle. There is a grand conspiracy to annihilate legacy members who stood with Senator Godswill Akpabio in building, growing, and sustaining the party.

“The Governor’s decision to grant automatic tickets to non-performing members, some of whom are seeking re-election against the zoning and rotation formula, is unjustifiable. A fair, equitable, and balanced formula for sharing elective offices between legacy members and recent defectors should be discussed and agreed upon”.

The petition further alleged that old members of the party have been sidelined and relegated by new entrants into the APC who are bent on hijacking the party structure in the state.

“Since the Governor’s defection to the party, what exists is a peace of the graveyard, with a cold war brewing between legacy members and new members. Legacy members are being discriminated against, looked down upon, and humiliated by the new members, creating a toxic environment that threatens the party’s stability. This unhealthy dynamic has further been exacerbated by the Governor’s recent pronouncement.

“What was thought to be a strategic advantage for the party in Akwa Ibom State, with the influx of new members, should not be turned into a disadvantage by disenfranchising loyal and dedicated members who have been the backbone of the party. Instead of strengthening the party, this pronouncement may achieve the opposite, undermining the party’s foundation and jeopardizing its future in the state.

“Furthermore, we strongly suspect that the Governor’s automatic ticket pronouncement may be part of a larger plot to undermine the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and decimate his structures within the party. By granting automatic tickets to incumbent lawmakers, the Governor may be attempting to consolidate his influence and weaken the Senate President of the party.

“This pronouncement may be a tactical move to reduce the influence of legacy members loyal to Senator Akpabio, thereby undermining his leadership and the party’s overall performance in the state.

‘We wish to state categorically that those who toiled, moiled, and built the party will not stand idly by and watch themselves being disgraced out of the party. Their sacrifices, dedication, and loyalty deserve recognition and reward, not marginalization and exclusion. We urge you to intervene in this matter, ensuring that the interests of legacy members who labored for the party are protected.

“In light of the foregoing, we stress that anything and everything must be done to avert a possible implosion of the party in Akwa Ibom State. The current situation is precarious, and if left unchecked, it may lead to an irreversible breakdown of the party’s structure, resulting in electoral defeat and loss of political relevance. We implore you to take immediate action to address this issue and ensure a level playing field for all members.”

Megida hails Bello, predicts APC victory in Yaba, Mainland

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaji Ibrahim Alao Megida, has commended the former Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources and current CEO of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Tunji Bello, for his consistent support ahead of Saturday’s local government elections.

Megida, who is also the Coordinator of the Mainland Independent Group (MIG), praised Bello’s commitment to the APC despite his demanding national assignment, noting that his moral and material backing has played a pivotal role in galvanising grassroots mobilisation across Yaba and Mainland.

“Despite his busy schedule as Chairman of FCCPC, Tunji Bello has remained constantly in touch with us, offering strategic advice and ensuring we remain focused on securing victory for the party.

He reminds us regularly that Lagos is the political base of our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and that we must fortify the party at the grassroots to keep it unshaken ahead of 2027”, he said.

As the LG polls draw closer, Megida expressed optimism that the APC would record a landslide in both Yaba LCDA and Mainland Local Government, noting that there was “no vacancy for the opposition.”

He urged eligible voters in Yaba to turn out en masse and vote for APC’s chairmanship candidate, Bayo Adefuye. He made a similar call to residents of Mainland L.G. to support Jubril Emilagba, the incumbent Vice Chairman, who is contesting for chairman under the APC platform.

“We have done virtually all that need be done,in terms of a sustained and intensified mobilisation of the electorates…. We had organized rallies, embarked on intensive door-to-door campaign

For those in the opposition party who had been looking forward to the prospect that they would cash in on the temporary differences in the party to coast home to victory, they have the entitlement to indulge themselves in futile day dreaming”, he said.

Reacting to speculations about internal wrangling within the APC, Megida acknowledged there were grievances during the party primaries but maintained that all factions have since reconciled.

“It’s natural for disagreements to arise, even within families. But maturity demands we resolve such issues and move forward. That is exactly what we’ve done. Every existing factions and caucuses have since closed ranks. Over the past few weeks,we had worked round the clock, holding series of meetings to discuss and strategize on the path to a resounding victory”, he explained.

APC dismisses Oyebanji, Fayemi’s defection plan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has dismissed the claim that Governor Biodun Oyebanji and former Governor Kayode Fayemi are planning to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, the party’s publicity secretary, Segun Dipe, described the reports as “sheer recklessness” and “mindless propaganda.”

Dipe emphasised that the governor and Fayemi are reliable leaders of the party and have no intention of leaving the APC for the ADC.

The APC spokesman noted that the duo has been instrumental in building the APC in Ekiti State and has invested their time, energy, and resources into the party.

He said, “These are our two leaders with no history of disloyalty to the ruling party. They are not turncoats in our party. For anyone to cook up such a lie that they are porting to another party is playing dirty politics and reckless propaganda, which should not be taken seriously by anyone.”

“Along with the first executive Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, the trio is consolidating our party in the State, and anyone not queuing behind them is not known to the Party.

“Are we thinking of APC in Ekiti without an Otunba, a JKF or a BAO? Not at all. Could we have maintained our stronghold of APC being the living and the ruling party in Ekiti State without the trio of Adebayo, Fayemi and Oyebanji? I doubt it.

“How reasonable is it for anyone to think that Fayemi, as the master builder of the house, would abandon it for a rented apartment, or Oyebanji, as the Number One dweller in the house, would go seeking refuge elsewhere?

“This is thoughtless and mindless of the rumour mongers, whose intentions are still unknown to us”, Dipe said.

Dipe, therefore, urged the public to disregard the false reports and instead focus on the development of the state.

LG election: Obasa urges residents to vote for APC

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has called on residents of the state to vote overwhelmingly for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Obasa emphasised that the APC remains committed to grassroots development and has a proven track record of delivering for the people.

He noted that Lagos State continues to outperform other states in the country due to the consistent leadership of progressive-minded individuals who prioritise the welfare of citizens.

“The incoming chairmen and councillors will perform if given the mandate to serve. At the primaries, we voted for those we trust and believe in.

“We urge Lagos residents to support them. Our party knows how to make life better for the people, and we intend to do even more,” he said.

Earlier, on Tuesday, during a strategic meeting held at the Assembly complex with APC candidates from the Lagos West Senatorial District, Obasa charged them to intensify their efforts through door-to-door campaigns and grassroots mobilisation to ensure victory at the polls.

In a show of solidarity, the Speaker made a generous financial contribution to support the campaign activities of the candidates and reassured them of the Assembly’s unwavering support before and after the elections.

Addressing the gathering, which included APC chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship candidates, Obasa urged them not to rely solely on the party’s popularity but to sustain aggressive outreach until the final day of campaigning.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has announced a ₦2 million cash reward for any of the 326 wards in the state that records the highest number of registrations in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The CVR, which began on Tuesday, is being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

The incentive was announced by APC’s governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, during a visit to Ogidi in Idemili Local Government Area, alongside his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.

The visit formed part of their ongoing “thank you” tour to the 21 local government areas of the state.

On her part, Senator Uche Ekwunife urged voters to use their PVCs to vote out the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, declaring that APC would take over leadership in Anambra come November 8, 2025.

Party leaders claimed that growing support from across political lines is due to President Bola Tinubu’s leadership style.

  • The high cost of unholy political alliances

The high cost of unholy political alliances

    • By Prince Charles Dickson

Nigeria’s political landscape is dominated by coalitions built not on shared values or ideological conviction, but on the shifting sands of immediate, self-serving gain. These are not marriages of principle, but transactions of convenience—frail, temporary, and ultimately destructive.

Nigeria reels under the weight of these failed political marriages, where power is grabbed, not governed for, and the masses remain perpetual orphans.

It has always been a history of strange bedfellows. A very quick dive into the anatomy of political “matrimony” in Nigeria since independence reads like a chronicle of forced and fractured unions. Parties and coalitions frequently emerge, not from shared visions for development, social justice, or economic philosophy, but from the singular ambition to capture or retain power. Ethnic arithmetic and religious balancing often supersede policy alignment, creating inherently unstable partnerships. The First and Second Republics witnessed alliances primarily designed to counter dominant regions or personalities. The Fourth Republic, post-1999, exemplifies this trend most vividly.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), initially a sprawling “big tent,” housed factions with fundamentally opposing economic and social views, held together precariously by the allure of federal power and patronage. Its main challengers, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), were themselves born, not from ideological convergence, but from marriages of convenience between disgruntled PDP heavyweights and disparate opposition groups united solely by the desire to oust the incumbent. These are classic “strange bedfellow” arrangements – lacking trust, shared purpose, or commitment beyond the immediate electoral battle. These alliances are rooted in ambition, not nation-building.

Politicians change parties with bewildering frequency, demonstrating a loyalty that lies solely with personal ambition and access to resources, not with constituents or proclaimed principles. Cross-carpeting has been normalized as a strategy, not stigmatized as betrayal. As one analysis starkly put it: “Politicians who decamp are mostly those who face criticism or challenges within their party and view defection as a convenient escape route. They have no overriding philosophy, clear ideology or policy framework to guide their members’ actions and decisions”.

The comparison to marital infidelity in the search results is apt: “In Nigeria, the populace is overwhelmed by the spectacle of regular ‘decamping’ of prominent political figures followed by ‘re-camping’…

Nigerian politicians act in the same manner and fail to show appreciation for the fact that in exchange for their votes, the people expect service from them”. High-profile figures moving between PDP, APC, and smaller parties multiple times within a single electoral cycle expose the utter hollowness of party identity and the cynical nature of these political “vows.” This constant betrayal mirrors the instability of a union lacking foundational values, draining public trust and institutional integrity. Each defection underscores that the initial “marriage” was a facade for power-grabbing.

Read Also: Tinubu not distracted by 2027 election discourse, says Idris

Nigerian political parties, with few exceptions, lack coherent, distinct, and consistently articulated ideological foundations. There is no meaningful differentiation between parties based on core beliefs about the role of the state, economic models (social democracy vs. free-market liberalism vs. state interventionism), social policy, or foreign policy orientation.

Without ideology, parties become mere vehicles for electioneering and patronage distribution. Membership is fluid, driven by “what can I gain?” rather than “what do I believe?” This absence of principled glue means coalitions cannot be built on shared visions for the country’s future; only on the temporary alignment of personal interests in seizing power or resources. It reduces politics to a transactional, zero-sum game, focused on taking, not contributing. This vacuum allows ethnic and religious fissures, often cynically exploited by politicians themselves as seen in Jos, to become the primary markers of political identity, further fracturing the nation.

The devastating consequences of these unholy political alliances and the ideologies that fuel division are tragically embodied in places like Jos, Plateau State. Here, a complex struggle over land, resources, and political control (“indigenes” vs. “settlers”) was deliberately reframed by politicians as a religious conflict between Muslims and Christians.

As documented, “Despite the conflict’s portrayal as religious, ‘there is no religious doctrine that has been the focus of the fight,’” said a University of Jos professor. Politicians reframed the conflict “to expand their support, manufacturing a religious conflict”.

This cynical manipulation, born from the same playbook of leveraging division for political gain evident in national coalition-building, has cost thousands of lives, shattered communities, and destroyed interfaith families who once coexisted peacefully.

The segregation and suspicion fostered by this politically manufactured strife is a microcosm of how Nigeria’s elite, through their unprincipled power games and alliances, sacrifice national unity and citizen’s well-being on the altar of personal ambition.

Can we have enduring unions, principles over power and escape this cycle by demanding a fundamental shift from power-centric alliances to principle-based politics?

This I believe requires ideological clarification: Parties must develop, articulate, and adhere to clear, distinct ideologies beyond simply winning elections. This allows voters to choose based on vision and values, not just personality or ethnicity, and fosters genuine, lasting coalitions built on shared principles, not just shared enemies. Regulatory bodies like INEC need support (and pressure) to enforce rules against frivolous defection that betray the electorate’s mandate.

Citizens enlightenment and demand: An “uneducated electorate,” susceptible to manipulation based on sectarian or ethnic lines, enables bad politics. Sustained civic education is crucial to empower citizens to demand accountability and reject politicians known for serial defections or divisive tactics. They must value policy substance over patronage.

Strengthening grassroots reconciliation: Initiatives like those in Jos – training youth in early warning systems, promoting inter-communal dialogue focusing on the real political and economic roots of conflict, not the manufactured religious ones – need replication and scaling nationally. Rebuilding trust at the community level undermines the politician’s divide-and-rule toolkit.

And of course constitutional and institutional reforms: Strict enforcement of constitutional provisions requiring elected officials who defect to vacate their seats should be non-negotiable. Furthermore, exploring reforms that promote internal party democracy and policy debate, rather than strongman dominance, could gradually foster more ideologically coherent parties.

To build a legacy worthy of its potential, Nigeria must move beyond the politics of strange bedfellows and serial infidelity. Its political unions must be consecrated, not to the fleeting god of power, but to the enduring principles of service, ideological clarity, and the unwavering commitment to the common good. Only then can the nation transform its political dalliances into a lasting, fruitful covenant with its people.

You’re trudging on path of lies, deception, APC blasts ADC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as lies the allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the governing party are plotting to undermine and destabilise the opposition coalition party.

ADC Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi in a statement on Monday levied the allegation against the President and the ruling party.

Citing “credible intelligence”, ADC alleged that its party state chairmen in the North East and North West zones were summoned to a “secret meeting with officials of the federal government”, in a plot to intimidate and coerce the opposition coalition.

Trashing the allegation, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday said that ADC has chosen to trudge on the “beaten path of lies and deception like its opposition counterparts, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).

APC noted that beyond the rash of poorly imagined accusations, the statement did not offer substantiation of any kind.

According to the ruling party, “It’s vague reference to “officials of federal government” only belies the mischievous intent of its makers to whip up sentiments, manipulate public opinion, and distract Nigerians from the patent hopelessness of their political phishing expedition.

“Otherwise, why is it so impossible for ADC to provide Nigerians the details of the alleged “secret meeting” at which its senior party officers were “coerced and intimidated”. Rather, the party cites nonsensical “credible intelligence” as basis for its devious allegations.

“Clearly, there was no such meeting, and certainly, no one could have been coerced or intimidated at a meeting that never was. This could have happened only in the warped imagination of masters of deception and marauding invaders of the ADC.”

The ruling party argued further that there was no reason for the President or APC to expend valuable time and energy trying to sow confusion within ADC that is already mortally wounded by confusion delivered by its invaders.

“The ADC needs no help from our great Party to unravel as it must from its own internal dissonance, contradictions and discord of self-serving and vainglorious personalities that executed a gestapo-like takeover of the party to the chagrin of bonafide leaders and members of the party.

“The ADC’s statement is just a calculated preemptive excuse for its evident ill-fated future of disintegration, like Humpty Dumpty whose great fall could not be put back together again. It has placed on public display the incompetence and inability of its leadership to manage its impending internal crisis, in the same way they proved incapable of managing the internal affairs of opposition parties they have plundered serially before the ADC.

“And what good can possibly come out of a coalition of our country’s most inept politicians and architects of misrule, corruption, poverty and underdevelopment who are now congregated in ADC? What else can be expected from a coalition of failed and restless presidential contenders determined to bring down the roof on the altar of their inordinate ambitions?

“As an agglomeration of politicians desperate for presidential power, the ADC has nothing to offer Nigerians and has failed to articulate any alternative vision of governance and development for Nigeria beyond the sound and fury of grudge, vendetta, inordinate presidential ambitions of its leaders. Their strategy appears to begin and end with vilifying our great party and attacking President Tinubu’s incomparable and unassailable record of economic reconstruction and wholesome transformation of our country.

“The ADC and its leaders may be convinced of their ability to lie their way to presidential victory but they have a highly intelligent and discerning Nigerian electorate to contend with.

“They say one thing, mean another and do yet another. From Mr. Peter Obi’s desperate vow to serve a single term of four years if elected as president, and his pledge to fly only commercial airlines as president, even though he campaigned with steeze and opulence in private jets throughout the 2023 election season; to Mallam El-Rufai who failed spectacularly in comparison to mind-blowing transformation of Abuja by the award-wining incumbent Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike; to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola whose lack-luster performance as Minister of Interior is now so glaring in the face of the innovation and super efficiency introduced by the current Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; to Hadi Sirika whose tenure as Aviation Minister was characterised by invidious scandals, aside floating a phantom Nigerian Air, now even more disgraceful in comparison with the drastic improvements in our airports and the aviation sector, in general, under the watch of Olorogun Festus Keyamo (SAN), Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, none of the proponents of the coalition has the vision, the courage, competence, credibility, track record, zeal and patriotism to serve Nigeria better than President Bola Tinubu is already doing.”
