APC to Fayose: name the 10 lawmakers

    •Row over endorsement of nominees

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has urged Governor Ayodele Fayose to  name the 10 lawmakers who sat to ratify his commissioner-nominees and caretaker committee members on Monday.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said: “If Governor Fayose wanted the public to believe that the 10 lawmakers formed a quorum, he should let the world have their names and their constituencies.”

The APC reiterated that only seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers sat and they were joined by three strange men who disguised as lawmakers to deceive the people at the gallery and the selected print media present that they formed a quorum.

“The electronic media were prevented from covering the event so that the identities of the three men could be protected.”

The party challenged the governor to produce the video recording of Monday’s proceedings as required by House Rules, if he was sure that 10 members sat.

It said: “The fact that the self-styled minority leader for Monday’s sitting, Ajibola Samuel, representing Ekiti East II, said 10 lawmakers sat while Fayose’s Chief Press Secretary Idowu Adelusi said nine lawmakers sat showed that Fayose’s men were lying.

“We make bold to say that at the time the seven PDP lawmakers were holding their illegal sitting in Ado Ekiti, the 19 APC lawmakers, including the speaker and his deputy, were on a live programme on Adaba FM in Akure.

“There are 26 members in the House of Assembly, if 19 were on a radio programme in Akure, only seven or less should be sitting in the Assembly and if they are more than seven, it means they are rented.

“It is baffling that the police which could not provide enough security for judges to sit on the governor’s eligibility case suddenly mobilised 300 men to provide cover for an illegal sitting. This is the gateway to fascism the end result of which could be anarchy.

“Fayose must set a good example and stop fanning the embers of discord among the other arms of government. How can a governor muscle the Judiciary and now turn the legislature to a department in his office?

“It is shameful that he has lived up to the prediction that Ekiti will move from crisis to crisis under his watch.

“We appeal to all men of conscience to reject this new tyranny as that is the only way our freedom and democracy could be guaranteed.”

Etsako councillors adopt Alimikhena for Senate

Thirty two councillors from three Etsako local government areas of Edo North have adopted Chief Francis Alimikhena for the Senate on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Alimikhena’s rivals in the senatorial race are Prof Julius Ihonvbere, the Secretary to Government, and Senator Domingo Obende. Ihonvbere is from Owan. Domingo is from Akoko Edo. Alimikhene ls from Etsako.

Alimikhene was endorsed at a dinner hosted by the councillors in SIK Hotel, Agenebode. The aspirant unfolded his agenda, saying that service and quality representation are his priority.

The motion for the adoption of the aspirant was moved by the Leader of Etsako East Council Legislative Council, Hon. Igiefameh Sunday Peter, and supported by Hon. Henry Aloye from Etsako Central. Other councillors threw their weight behind the adoption, saying that it is a right step in the right direction. The endorsement was sealed by a voice by allthe councillors.

However, the councillors advised Alimikhene to gird his loins, adding that he cannot afford to disappoint the district

The aspirant assured them of his dedication and commitment, stressing that he will not let the constituents down.

He promised to articulate the interest of the district in the Senate.

Senator Victor Oyofo was the last Etsako politician to represent Edo North in the Senate. That was between 1999 and 2007. Senator Yisa Braimoh from Owan succeeded him. He was in the Senate between 2007 and 2011. In 2011, Senator Obende from Akoko Edo was elected.

  • Aspirant writes Tinubu

    Aspirant writes Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives aspirant Solomon Akin-Aina has urged the leadership of the party to consider his ambition to represent the Ojo Federal Constituency, Lagos State.

In a letter to the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, he said it is his turn serve as a federal legislator recalling that he dropped the ambition in 2011 when the party prevailed on him to do so.

He said as a loyal party man, he worked for the success of the party in past elections.  Akin-Aina explained that the party did not compensate him when he stepped down.

He said: “I went through serious trial and tribulations, particularly in the hands of those favoured. I could not meet up with my responsibilities. My children were sent out of the universities over non-payment of their school fees.”

Akin-Aina added that he personally wrote the national leader on several occasions about his plight, but nothing concrete came up. “The people, whom you said I should step down for, deprived me of my rights and privileges. They disdained me and made a mockery of me.

I sacrificed my ticket and ambition for them just for nothing. I was not remembered, but forgotten. The out-gone chairman, Yinka Durosinmi, refused to pay my entitlement. He withheld all my benefits and rights.

He said his resolve to serve the party was based on genuine interest, stressing that when he was the Chairman, Campaign and Electoral Committee, his records in office remained unassailable as a loyal party man.

‘’My committee exposed the plot against out party by some few disgruntled elements, but for the timely intervention of God who used Prof. Attahiru Jega to nullify the first election. I have tarried along this spot, it is time for you to consider me. All the leaders are ready to ensure my victory,” he stated.

  • No consensus arrangement, says Oyo APC

No consensus arrangement, says Oyo APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has said there was no consensus arrangement as its primaries will be free and fair.

Its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, said arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth conduct of the primaries.

He, however, ruled out consensus arrangement, which many have expressed reservations that the party may adopt in place of primaries.

“The party is prepared for the smooth conduct of its primaries from the least elective position to the governorship election. The party has done the needful, what we are waiting for are the guidelines for the conduct of the primaries and as soon as that is released we shall begin the primaries.”

  • I’ll be a formidable senator, says Seriki

I’ll be a formidable senator, says Seriki

A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant and now All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant for Lagos West, Demola Seriki, has said he will be a formidable senator, “not by definition or by title, but through meaning”.

Seriki spoke yesterday when he visited the House of Assembly to solicit members’ support.

The former minister said there was need to strengthen the legislative institution “so as to strengthen our democracy”.

“Through the legislature, we can strengthen democracy because legislative business emanates from experience and knowledge.

“It is like a school on its own. It is an institution, which all of us must collectively build together.”

Though he is from Lagos Central, he said he was contesting from Lagos West because senatorial election was a state wide matter and should therefore not be by zone or constituency.

“I am a proponent of state wide election. Senate is supposed to be a state wide election.

“It is really myopic and it is really wrong for us to have Lagos East, Lagos West, you can’t have people going for US Senate and saying New York West, New York East, nothing like that

. I am a native Lagosian, I am from Agege, I am from Badagry, I am from Isheri, I am from Island, I am from Ojokoro, I am from Arogangan, so I can claim I  come from anywhere within Lagos metropolis, you cannot limit where I can come from because I am a native Lagosian, a descendant of Awori.”

Describing APC as a new party, Seriki said it is a new amalgamation, “cutting across all races in Nigeria, all tribes in Nigeria and it is like a plc, a gathering of a party and we are ready to take the  presidency of the country, to take over the central government.”

  • Aspirant: I’ll represent well

    Aspirant: I’ll represent well

An All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives aspirant, Dhikrulai Ajibola, has promised to represent the people well, if elected in 2015.

He said this yesterday while picking his intent form at the party secretariat in  Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

“I am planning to ensure good representation of my people and to fashion out laws that will be beneficial to them.

“I have been in politics since the days of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

“I was a youth mobiliser; I left for the United States in 1991 and came back in 2010 and contested for the same seat as an aspirant, but I lost the ticket then.

“I know what the people want. With my wealth of experience, I believe I am the best candidate for the job.

“I am not disturbed by the number of aspirants because I am not a match for them. I am a likeable person, who is not selfish.

“None of them can match my experience and grassroots political value.

“I am rest assured that the ticket will be given to me.

“I have been committed and loyal to the party and I know with all this I will secure the ticket.

“I have assisted 50 unemployed youths to get jobs in the state civil service.

“I donated N1 million worth of equipment to hospitals.

“I also offered scholarships to students in higher institutions in the state.

“I have also rendered social welfare services to many people, and I know I will do more if I get the party ticket.”

  • PDP, APC given 14 days to disclose spending on elections

PDP, APC given 14 days to disclose spending on elections

A civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has sent two Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), asking them to “provide information on the spending (and the sources) on the campaigns and other operations linked to the February general elections.”

“If the information is not provided to us within 14 days of the receipt and/or publication of these letters, the trustees of SERAP shall take legal actions under the FOI Act to compel you and your party to comply with our request,” the group said.

In the letters dated November 18 and addressed to the PDP National Chairman Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu and APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the group expressed “concern about the risks of corruption during campaigns for the February elections, especially the role of money in politics and the failure to comply with national and international laws on party finance.”

The letters, signed by SERAP Executive Director Adetokunbo Mumuni said: “Nigerians have a right to know about spending by their parties, especially major parties like your party with a possibility to assume government in future. People should be able to examine the financial transactions of parties and be certain that politicians are working for their voters, not their benefactors.”

  • SERAP charges APC, PDP to disclose spending

SERAP charges APC, PDP to disclose spending

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has requested the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as well as All Progressive Congress (APC), to formally release costs of spending incurred in their efforts geared towards the 2015 General election.

Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director of SERAP, in two separate letters dated 18 November, 2014, and addressed to Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, PDP National Chairman and Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the APC National Chairman, requested the parties to publicly present information about the spending on the electoral campaigns and other operations in line with the February 2015 elections.

The Civil society group, SERAP hinged its request letter on Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) of 2011, when it said: “Under the FOI Act, your party is under a binding legal obligation to provide the applicant with the information requested for, except as otherwise provided by the Act, within 7 days after the application is received.”

Similarly, SERAP maintained that “If the requested information is not provided to us within 14 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter, the Registered Trustees of SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions under the Freedom of Information Act to compel you and your party to comply with our request,”.

Embittered about the risks and increase in corrupt practices around the country during electoral campaigns for the general elections, the group expressed dedicated worries, especially the role of money in politics and the persistent failure generally to comply with national and international law on political party finance.

In addition, the Executive Director further stressed that Nigerians have the right to know about spending by political parties especially the major parties “like your party with a strong possibility to assume government in the future. Citizens should be able to examine financial transactions of parties and be certain that politicians are working for their voters, not their benefactors.”

However, SERAP noted that the parties cannot claim a strange position from the FOI Act, saying “to do so will seriously undermine citizens’ trust in their political parties and lack of trust will inevitably destroy confidence in the system and decrease citizens’ interest and participation in democratic processes.”

The letter signed by the Executive Director, reads: “We believe that without free and fair elections there can be no democracy. However, elections are only one part of the democratic process, and a fair and effective electoral system must be founded in an adequate democratic infrastructure and responsibility of political leaders.

“Therefore, releasing the information will help to address the perception among the citizens that the major political parties in the countries are less transparent and accountable. The lack of transparency and accountability in political finance is seriously undermining the legitimacy and credibility of the democratic and electoral processes, and invariably contributing to denying the citizens the right to effective participation in their own government.

“Transparency, accountability, integrity and independence of political parties is also important to achieve greater transparency in public life, to curb the influence of money in politics, to promote a level playing field, and to remove the risks to the independence of political actors and would-be public office holders and the risks of conflicts of interest, including undue influence and corruption in the funding of political parties.”

SERAP urged the parties to disclose information on the party’s comprehensively documented budget, covering the incomes and expenditures, with proper identification of its sources including those derived from federal, state and other institutions for the campaigns and other operations related to the February 2015 general elections.

Quoting Sections 2, 3(d, V) and 4 of the FOI Act, civil group said: “there is a binding legal duty to ensure that documents containing the necessary information are widely disseminated and made readily available to members of the public through various means. The information being requested does not come within the purview of the types of information exempted from disclosure by the provisions of the FOI Act.”

Consequently, the group opined that treading the path of transparency during campaigns could further promote informed voting by citizens who would have the needed information to make informed choices.

  • ‘How to build a new Nigeria’

‘How to build a new Nigeria’

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun reflects in the challenge of building a new Nigeria through the instrumentality of the ballot box. At a press conference in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he contends that the fledgling nation-state is still redeemable.

In the increasing atmosphere of rot and uncertainty being foisted on our nation by the PDP, I address you as the National Chairman of the Party that is preparing itself to assume the awesome responsibility of governing our long suffering nation next year. Our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),was formed as a result of the yearnings of the overwhelming majority of Nigerians for an alternative platform to change the trajectory of our beloved country. Many well-meaning Nigerians have asked me who we are; beginning from today we are going to have a weekly conversation with the Nigerian People to say who we are. All Nigerians, irrespective of their current party affiliation, who are dissatisfied with their personal circumstances and the national drift, and desire a change are welcome to join this movement led by the APC. Our movement is programmed to create a new Nigeria of which we will all, without exception, be proud.

With your overwhelming support and the free expression of your will, represented by your votes, the All Progressives’ Congress will by the grace of God next year commence the challenging but necessary process of charting a more secure and more prosperous future for us all. Armed with your mandate, we will raise the standards of governance and condition of living of all citizens to levels which all Nigerians deserve as of right. We will stop the rot and the descent to uncertainty and disaster which the sixteen years of PDP misrule hasplunged us to as a nation. We will restore to Nigerians the hope and assurance that our nation can be made whole again, and that our leaders will submit themselves to the will and needs of our people.

In the next few weeks, our candidates for all elective positions in the February 2015 elections will emerge. Our party will conduct all processes for the selection of these candidates in strict and transparent compliance with our rules, and we will put forward candidates who will truly represent the people and work for a future full of hope, confidence, progress and peace. We have no doubt that Nigerians will vote for these candidates we will put up, because they will be agents of change, and they will be standing against agents of the status quo, who want to perpetuate this culture of deceit, divisiveness, incompetence and impunity that has continued to hold Nigeria back. We will ask Nigerians to vote for genuine and enduring change; change in the manner young Nigerians see their future; change in the attitude of leaders, from oppressive and arrogant leadership, to leadership anchored on respect for rule of law, fear of God and deep commitment to the service of the people; and change from a life of insecurity and daily threats to our lives and property to a life of maximum security and peace.

We are under no illusions about the magnitude of the task our party will be called to embark upon. It will be a massive challenge. But we draw strength and inspiration from the knowledge that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians recognize that a continuing PDP administration cannot guarantee Nigerians a future of prosperity, dignity and peace. We, in the APC, are in touch with the sentiments, aspirations and concerns of our people. To those who are now living and dying in occupied parts of our nation; to those who are displaced and living in refugee camps because their homeland is occupied by terrorists, to those who are in fear of the imminent occupation of their homeland by savage elements, we say help is on the way and positive change is near.

Our party will chart a new course of recovery and regeneration for our nation. We will set very high standards of respect for the rule of law, such that our nation will never again experience the unprecedented scale of impunity that has been the central feature of this PDP led administration. We see this impunity on display in the administration’s tyrannical reaction to the exercise of the right of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. AminuWaziriTambuwal to change his party. The Police arrogated to itself the power of the judiciary to interpret the Constitution and withdrew the security details of the Speaker. The illegal and high-handed action by the Police in removing the security details of a sitting Speaker of the House of Representatives has attracted strong and widespread condemnation from within and outside Nigeria. The Department of Security Services, a service which washitherto insulated from partisan politics have also been directed and has similarly withdrawn its operatives from the Speaker.

We see another manifestation of the PDP administration’s fondness for impunity and its disturbing tendency to cuddle corruption, in the recent release to Capital Oil Ltd all its assets hitherto lawfully acquired by AMCON as a result of its said involvement in the fuel subsidy scam. It is not a secret that the proprietor of Capital Oil is the coordinator or convener of the widely derided Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) that is at the forefront of the obscene and doomed campaign for the reelection of President GoodluckJonathan. A great nation like Nigeria should not be run with such crass disdain for decency, common sense and the rule of law.

Once in office, our party will govern with openness and transparency, and every kobo belonging to the public will be judiciously utilized and meticulously accounted for. We will call corruption by its name and fight it with the vehemence it deserves. We will restore the faith of the public in the necessity for leaders to live honestly and lead with vision, competence and compassion.

Our Party will collaborate and cooperate with the states in the true practice of a Federal relationship. We shall run an all-inclusive government and seek the views of all segments including the positive ideas of opposition parties in the formulation and execution of governmentpolicies.

An APC administration will rebuild and expand infrastructure; invest in human capital, particularly the Youth; deploy resources to provide jobs and employment opportunities and get our economy working again for all Nigerians. We shall work for the inclusive growth and development of our economy through massive job creation programs to ensure the reduction of poverty and the protection of the weak.

An APC Federal administration will unite all Nigerians by eliminating policies and sentiments such as religion and ethnicity which the PDP has deliberatelyexploited to divide the nation. We will restore the faith and confidence of Nigerians in each other, and ensure that no Nigerian anywhere suffers any disadvantage on account of his or her religious affiliation or ethnic origin. We will uphold the rule of law and protect the human rights of all our citizens.

The defense of the territorial integrity of our fatherland and the protection of the lives and property of all who live within our bordersshall be a non-negotiable priority of an APC Federal Government. We will reclaim every inch of Nigerian territory, and liberate fellow citizens who, under the current dispensation, are resigned to life as captured and conquered citizens. Our armed forces will be massively motivated and given the necessary manpower and materials to enable them perform their sacred duty of protecting our country. Our people will be mobilized to support and honour our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to ensure that we are all protected.

To all Nigerians, I say, our party, the APC, will change Nigeria for good.  We have the men and women who can do this because they passionately believe in Nigeria and are aggrieved by the 16 years of wasted opportunities under the PDP. We have developed the ideas and strategies to achieve this. We have the faith and confidence that this can be donein short order. We are resolved never to give up on Nigeria, or to abandon the imperatives of ensuring that the democratic process translates into better lives and opportunities for the present generation and a solid foundation to build an even better life for future generations. The only people who will fear, or resist, the type of change we represent and promise, are the tiny blood suckingminority who benefit from Nigeria’s current social and economic degradation.

Two days ago, you heard President Goodluck Jonathan announce himself as the candidate of the PDP and asked Nigerians for another four years as President. You heard a lot of claims, misrepresentations and voodoo statistics, none of which can stand the barest scrutiny. Disregard them! You heard excuses for failure to fix basic infrastructure, arrest unprecedented levels of corruption and halt the march of terrorists daily inching nearer all of us. You heard promises that sound familiar because you have heard them all before since his six (6) years as President. Do not give the party that has savaged Nigeria in the last 16 years an opportunity to finally finish off our dear nation. The PDP cannot deliver on any of the same promises it has failed to honourin over a decade and a half in power.

The 2015 election will be decided on the character and leadership qualities of the Nigerian President. The Commander-in-Chief should also be “Consoler-in-Chief” bringing comfort and succor to our people in time of grief and distress. You heard two days ago President Jonathan saying that good leaders do not walk away from the people, sadly though the statement is true, our President who wants another four years does not show evidence of sympathy for hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens who are now Internally Displaced Persons(IDP) as a result of the occupation of their land by Boko Haram. He brings no relief or comfort to those living under the reign of terror. About 50 young Nigerian School Children were killed and several others injured in Potiskumjust a few days before the extravaganza show of his declaration. Yet we do not hear of a Presidential visit to the families of the victims, a pattern that has become usual. Our President lives in his comfort zone, content to utter words, and ‘minutes of silence’ that have no meaning to the victims.

The President has abandoned the Nigerian people. We should end the journey with President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 and aelect leader who will be part of our lives and lead with courage and empathy.

I therefore appeal to all Nigerians to endeavour to collect their Permanent Voters Cards, and use them to vote out the PDP and vote in the brighter, safer and more prosperous future, which the APC represents. I call on INEC, the security agencies and other institutions of government to discharge their responsibilities courageously, fairly and firmly. Their prime responsibility is to the nation. I appeal to the international community to remain vigilant and continue to work with all Nigerians to ensure that the 2015 elections are credible. On our part, we remain committed to respecting the integrity of the electoral process, and we will discourage its subversion and will resist vigorously the use of violence, official or otherwise, to prevent the triumph of the will of the people.

It is with a sense of deep patriotism that we in the APC appeal to Nigerians to join us, because we need to work together to make Nigeria the great country it should be.  I want to call on all Nigerians to work with us, support us and vote for our candidates in the forthcoming elections. APC governments at all levels will be your governments, and we assure you that you will feel the difference in the very first few months of our administration at all levels. We assure our brother African nations who agonize over the decline in Nigeria’s leadership that our nation will rise again and give Africa the exemplary leadership it deserves. We assure the International Community particularly, our friends, that the APC treasures their friendship and treasures their concern for our nation. We assure them all that we will rebuild our capacities to operate at the global level as a responsible and responsive pillar of global governance, a beacon of hope for all mankind.

  • APC raises alarm over PDP-instigated impunity

APC raises alarm over PDP-instigated impunity

Over 200 police-men could not have been deployed for this illegal act in Ekiti without the knowledge of the Inspector General of Police. Yet, the same IG trampled the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by assuming the powers of the court to unilaterally withdraw the security detail of House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.

“Can the IG claim not to be aware that his men are offering protection to only seven out of the 26 members of the Ekiti House of Assembly? Does he honestly believe it is part of the responsibility of the police, which is being funded by tax payers, to become the enforcement arm of the PDP? Does he believe that the police that is empowered to enforce the law should play a lead role in breaking it?” the party queried.

It warned the “excitable and depthless” Governor Fayose not to throw the state into a needless crisis by his “trademark tomfoolery”.

The party warned that while a lot of unconstitutional and illegal activities have taken place under the PDP-led Federal Government, including the impeachment of then Governor  Joshua Dariye of Plateau State by only eight of the 24 House of Assembly members, any decision taken by only seven PDP members in the 26-member Ekiti House of Assembly will not stand.

The party called on the PDP and the Federal Government to stop instigating crisis in APC-controlled states, saying the PDP-instigated crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly was yet to subside before the “anarchic” ruling party decided to pounce on Ekiti.

“No matter how long it takes, those who are willfully flouting the laws of the land and engaging in anti-democratic actions will come to justice.

“Nothing in the world will justify the subversion of the Constitution by anyone, especially those who are democratically-elected. We are, therefore, warning the puppeteers in Ekiti to put a leash on their dogs of war, and not to set Ekiti State ablaze over their narrow interests,” it said.
