  • Who is afraid of General Muhammadu Buhari?

Who is afraid of General Muhammadu Buhari?

The attempt to snuff life out of one of Nigeria’s most revered former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, in a fiendish operation which would have passed for a routine Boko Haram attack, would have thrown Nigeria in turmoil of unimaginable proportions as President Jonathan submitted days ago.

The failed “assassination attempt” as Buhari tagged it, may not be unconnected with the grand plot to silence the opposition. This is coming on the heels of the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state and the tightening of impeachment noose around Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa state before he was cleared of charges against him yesterday.

Clearly, the shades of the varying scope of operation to hunt down those who pose a threat to the present government as enshrined in the alleged sniper’s list former President Olusegun Obasanjo divulged in his missive is being made manifest.

Surely, the mere knowledge of an alleged sniper’s list should be instructive to the opposition party leaders.Impeaching opposition Governors one after the other, it now appears, is part of the grand scheme.

To underscore the gruesome motive of the perpetrators, eyewitness accounts said the bomb-laden car single-mindedly targeted the vehicle conveying the APC chieftain to Daura, his ancestral home from Kaduna. It hit target but the bulletproof construction of the SUV ensured the General escaped death by the whiskers. To the ‘terrorists’, they came agonisingly close.

How can we forget retired General Muhammadu Mamman Shuwa? In November 2012, the civil war veteran was killed in cold blood by unknown gunmen in his Maiduguri home yards away from soldiers idling away in enforcement of law and order. Boko Haram, the usual suspects were fingered. Had Buhari suffered a similar fate, the perpetrators would use the sect to divert attention from the perpetrators.

The PDP have sold a dummy to Nigerians for too long that the sponsors of terror were members of the opposition, All Progressive Congress (APC), but this attack have vindicated the much maligned progressives. Buhari has openly challenged those who accuse him of religious fundamentalism to come out and show proof. No one till this day has any clue.

Forirredentists, who think the attack on Buhari’s life was stage-managed, let them continue to stew in their bitterness and wallow in their chutzpah. Same people who peddle such falsehood of a self-masterminded attack won’t roam within a metre radius of a spot of a bomb scare. Any reasonable Nigerian will acknowledge the risk in masterminding such an attack as the probability that it could spiral out of control is higher than its success.

The political elite in the ruling party must truly be frightened by Buhari’s growing popularity ahead of the 2015 elections even though the media coverage on the General is frequently negative with unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations. It has rather won him more support from discerning Nigerians who cannot be misinformed or misled by needless propaganda.

For his loyalists across the country, they can boldly say of him, “All I need from Buhari is his word I can take it to the bank.”Such is the cult-like following that Gen. Buhari wields that he need not rent a crowd, or share rice to garner support.

This is because of his glowing and incorruptible antecedents.Very few people in this country will occupy the number one position to live a modest and Spartan life afterwards like him. He occupied lofty positions like the Governor of the defunct North-Eastern State of Nigeria, Head of State, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and Chairman of NNPC, Chairman of Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF).

He could easily be one of Nigeria’s wealthiest politicians with oil blocs to boot because he birthed and supervised the establishment of our existing refineries. Today, we import 70 per cent of the fuel we use because those after him have literally crippled the refineries. He could have retired into stupendous opulence like the Danjumas, Obasanjos, and Abachas of this world. But Buhari bucked the trend and chose the honourable path.

His detractors and traducers are uncomfortable with him around the political scene. Maybe he scares them with his incorruptible, uncompromising, sober, painstaking personae he exudes; his intolerance of impropriety – a major fault of the privileged political elite – scares them. He is everything they are not.

There have been various attempts to erode the electoral value of a man who has validated his cast iron reputation for accountability and transparency coming out unscathed from probes regarding his tenure as Chairman of PTF. And as Buhari’s staunch loyalist in Mallam Nasir el-Rufai posited that his antagonists “have changed our politics into that of ethnicity and religion to divert attention from their incompetence, lack of capacity and looting of the treasury… PDP is scared of Buhari’s integrity and his track record of doing the right thing and ensuring that people are brought to justice when they break the law. They are afraid of that day when he will become President.”

With the failed attempt to take General Buhari’s life, the burgeoning army of opposition against the General of impeccable integrity would now sit back, maybe have a rethink, recall their foot soldiers masked in the toga of Jihadists cutting short the lives of “infidels” they see as living corpses.

In the 2011 presidential elections, the man they hate to see even in their dreams, got over 12 million votes with a party that was formed barely 10 months to the election without the support structure and votes a state Governor or even a Local Government chairman would have brought into the party. He had no war chest or federal might to manipulate voters and electoral officers, a trick the PDP has perfected over the years. But Buhari’s enormous star power earned him a couple of senators and a state governor after the elections. It won’t take a political scientist, a Nostradamus or some prophetic unction to work the numbers in votes the General will pull in 2015 with the 15 Governors in the APC fold!

Those who plotted the dastardly act are enemies of Nigeria, they neither seek its prosperity nor tranquilitybut thrive and profit from the chaos, bloodshed and colossal sleaze. They are afraid of the intimidating profile of the former Head of State and his acolytes in the opposition party.

Whoever wanted Buhari dead has made a super hero of him. Of all the reasons why Buhari was wanted dead, the 2015 general elections keep popping out of every possibility and conspiracy theory. Inadvertently, they only succeeded in raising his popularity meter. With the overwhelming outpouring of emotion and support, the retired General has reaffirmed his status as a political heavyweight and gladiator who remains a top contender for next year’s general elections.

  • APC’ll win Adamawa governorship poll

    APC’ll win Adamawa governorship poll

    •‘Al-Makura’s clearance vindicates APC’

Despite the recent impeachment of former Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako, a former vice-president and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has said the party will win the forthcoming governorship election.

He also said APC would ensure an open and fair contest among its members vying for the party’s ticket.

Atiku addressed reporters yesterday on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

A statement by Media Unit of the Atiku Campaign Organisation quoted the former vice-president as saying: “APC is the party to beat in Adamawa State. All the contenders for the party’s ticket are my close political associates. Therefore, it is imperative for me to ensure a high sense of neutrality in this situation and allow the followership of the party take a decision on who should be their candidate.

“It is important APC makes the Adamawa election a case study in political transparency through effective application of the party’s internal democracy mechanism before, during and post-election periods.

“The governorship election is very crucial to the electioneering future and fortune of Nigeria’s politics.

“This is the more reason the APC wants to rebuild the country’s equitably, fairly and justly. I have always been an advocate of internal democracy in political party system; now is the time to practise what we preach.

“Only a level-playing field can sustain and maintain unity, security and prosperity for all and sundry.”

The former vice-president noted that the culture of imposing candidates on a party was no longer fashionable.

Atiku added: “The culture of imposition of candidates and its concomitant impunity is now old fashioned and unacceptable in our democracy.

“You may recall that I have been in the vanguard of safeguarding true democracy by challenging obstacles to justice and fair play. I even went to court severally to protect our hard-won political freedom.

“I will continue to lead with others in the race to unseat this inept and incompetent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maladministration, which has thrown Nigerians into an era of depression, frustration and desperation.”

On the dismissal of the impeachment plot against Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura by the panel constituted by the Chief Judge, Atiku said this was “a real life vindication of the APC as a party of the people that creates and cherishes good governance”.

He added: “The era where a political super power would arbitrarily use impeachment as a mechanism to get rid of political opposition is over.”

  • Why Osun should not vote PDP, by Oyinlola

Why Osun should not vote PDP, by Oyinlola

Before a roaring crowd of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters, former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola sealed yesterday his renunciation of the People Democratic Party (PDP), which he urged the people to reject at the poll on Saturday.

Oyinlola, now of the APC, was all smiles as he danced and sang at the party’s rally ahead of the governorship election.

He said the electorate should not vote PDP’s candidate Iyiola Omisore.

Clad in complete All Progressives Congress (APC) customised agbada at the party’s mega rally at Osogbo Township Stadium, the former governor said there was no project the ruling party at the federal level has executed in Osun to deserve the people’s vote.

While formally leaving his former party to join the APC alongside his numerous supporters, the former PDP national secretary also threw jibes at President Goodluck Jonathan for marginalising the Southwest in the sharing of plum political offices after the zone had helped him win the presidency in 2011. Jonathan won five out of six states (except Osun) in the zone in the last presidential poll.

In a speech brimming with anecdotes, Oyinlola, an Okuku prince, swore with sanctity of the royal crown to further authenticate his claims, as he tasked would-be voters to cast their votes wisely.

“Is there any Yoruba among those currently holding the highest offices of the federal government?” he asked, adding that the office of the chief of staff to the President is the highest occupied by a South-westerner.

Oyinlola recalled that his travails with the PDP and Jonathan began when, in 2011, he was invited by Mr. President who then indicated interest to run in 2011. He said he told President Jonathan that the right person to approach was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, adding that both leaders later agreed, worked together and achieved victory. However, after the election, Oyinlola said, Jonathan started baring his fangs, maltreating the former president. The Ogun State PDP executive was unilaterally dissolved and the party’s structure in the Southwest was disrupted.

He alleged that the President desecrated the constitution of the PDP, having now built the party in his own image.

After tracing how the Presidency has rewarded the zone’s goodness with ingratitude by systematically sidelining the Southwest in the scheme of things, Oyinlola, amidst rousing applause from the mammoth crowd that graced the rally, also spoke about character flaws of Omisore, who is the main challenger to APC’s Governor Rauf Aregbesola, saying people of shady antecedents should not be entrusted with the leadership of the state. Linking the self-conceited nature of Omisore to the defection of key PDP stalwarts, the retired soldier made a veiled reference to the killing of Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He said it was unfortunate that the presidency is now recruiting all the characters allegedly connected with the murder of the former chief law officer of the country into leadership positions.

“In Osun State, the PDP can’t be voted for because its governorship candidate is selfish. He only thinks of himself alone. He ensured  Prof.  Wale Oladipo, his kinsmen, became the PDP national secretary, Jelili Adesiyan as Police Affairs Minister,  Gani Ola-Oluwa, as the party’s state chairman and working Senate for Kunle Alao. All these people were in prison custody with him. For his selfishness, Isiaka Adeleke, Fatai Adeleke, and now myself left the PDP,” Oyinlola said.

He enjoined the people to vote for Aregbesola becuase of his sterling performance and his passion to do a lot more for the people.

The former governor praised Aregbesola’s intervention in education, especially the policy that seeks to decentralise the state-owned Osun State University, saying this would further cement the spirit of togetherness in the state.

  • APC vows to set up parallel govt if 2015 poll is rigged

APC vows to set up parallel govt if 2015 poll is rigged

The All Progressives Congress (APC) warned yesterday against any plan to rig next year’s general election, saying it will form a people’s government if  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attempts to rig the poll.

Addressing a huge crowd of supporters at the party’s mega rally for the re-election of its governorship candidate in Osun at the Osogbo Township Stadium in Osogbo, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, ?said the battle line was drawn.

Saying the APC will not allow its mandate to be stolen, Odigie-Oyegun said they were not afraid of the forces of oppression.

His words: “Let those who have ears hear that they should not tamper with a single vote that belongs to us. The battle line is already drawn. The APC will not allow its mandate to be stolen. After the Ekiti State, there can be no more opportunity for anybody to steal our mandate. Enough is enough.

“The APC is prepared for free and fair election . If anyone steals our mandate on February 20, 2015, we will resist it and set up a people’s government. Let them be warned, there would be dire consequences for this.”

The chairman asked the people to observe a minute silence in honour of the late Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, who was murdered in his Ibadan, Oyo State capital home on December 23, 2001.

Odigie-Oyegun said he was impressed by the large turnout of the people at the rally.

Said he: “What I could see in people’s eyes is love, passion for Aregbesola’s performance. I have witnessed his popularity. I have never seen a large turnout in rally like this in my entire political life. Are you going to be afraid forces of oppression?.”

The national leader of the party and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, advised the people to push on with courage, saying “you can not eat omelette without breaking an egg”.

He told the crowd not to allow or accept any intimidation from the security operatives posted to secure lives and property during the election.

He said: “Don’t be intimidate by the soldiers or police. We pay give them their uniform and pay their salaries. ?We won’t allow anybody to use police and soldiers  to harrass us. Our party agents should not take bribe from anybody to sabotage the election. If you stand firm you will be the first set of people to be recruited for jobs when it is time for it.”

Tinubu pointed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s failure in many sectors, saying he is incompetent.

“They keep saying they know where the kidnapped girls are kept. If truly they know, let them bring them out and if it is the enemies that keep them and they know, it means they are saying they should be taken away.”

Tinubu Said: “It is a broom revolution. You must come out, everyone of you to cast your vote. Don’t be afraid of the police or the soldiers. They are paid to protect you. They are part of us. We have them in our families.

“We know them. We must be careful and vigilant this time. But we must protect our votes. The soldiers are to protect you. They cannot use the uniform to steal our votes. Defend your votes. Our agents must be vigilant.

“Jonathan is an incapable leader. He does not know this job. Where are our girls? They say they know where the girls are. If so, why not bring them out and set them free. Bring back the girls. APC is a party of the common man. Don’t be intimidated.

“Tell the soldiers to let you perform your civic duty. Police affairs minister and some PDP chieftain are bragging that Aregbesola will not win a single local government. It seems they have seen the results before the voting.

“They seem to know what you don’t know. We will win Osun State. They governor has performed. He is constantly working for the people.”

The former interim national chairman of the party and former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, said Jonathan had no voice in Osun because he could not point to any project he did during his last Saturday.

Oyinlola, who spoke in Yoruba language, to the admiration of the crowd, said the PDP did not mean well for the Yoruba.

According to him, no Yoruba is among the first twenty most powerful appointed officers in the Jonathan administration.

Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, described the PDP as darkness and the APC as light.

Oshiomhole advised the people to be on the side of light because of what they stand to benefit.

He said: “Where there is light, darkness must disappear. We all know what is going on in Osun. We are not surprised at your impressives turn out, when a crowd believe in a cause it is not hard to know.. Aregbesola represents light, but the other side is darkness.

“Stay by the man who wants peace, development and progress for you. Take their money and punish them for it. No receipt, no refund; that how we describe that kind of bribery in Edo State. We taught them a lesson in Edo; you can do better.”

The first civilian governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who defected from the PDP to the APC a day to the PDP’s governorship primary poll,  enjoined the people not to  be afraid of soldiers and  police posted to monitor the election.

Aregbesola, who urged security operatives to be civil, taught people how to cast their votes for him without voiding them or making a mistake.

He accused the Federal Government of not completing any project in the state in the last four years.

He said: “Those who started with them have left the PDP because there is nothing good with them. In the last four years, we have cared for the aged, the youth and students with our various programmes and polices and we intend to do a lot more than this.

“So, take time to vote right and stay by your votes so that they don’t manipulate the process. When you thumb print, count three columns before folding the paper given to you, then count another three columns and fold out, the APC broom symbol must have been well placed and safe for you to thumbprint.

“By this, they are not going to succeed to take any advantage. We patiently waited till now to reveal this secret. So make proper use of the opportunity.? And for those who could not do this by their own, especially the aged, ask for assistance from the INEC officials.”

In attendance were many party stalwarts, including Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Hamed, Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso, Aregbesola’s deputy Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori. House of Assembly Speaker Najeem Salaam.

Others are: Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former Interim National Chairman of the APC Chief Bisi Aknade, Oyo State Governor Isiaka Ajimobi, Senator Demola Seriki, chairman Aregbesola’s Campaign Committee, Senator Sola Adeyeye, Senator Olorunnibe Mamora, former Osun State governor, Senator Isiaka Adeleke and former Kwara State Governor Dr. Bukola Saraki.

Also there were APC National Publicity Secretary Alhaji  Lai Mohammed,  Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, former Ekiti State Governor and Deputy chairman of the APC Chief Segun Oni and Senator  Bayo Salami. Senator Chris Ngige, Chief Tony Momoh, former Bayelsa State Governor Timipriye Silva, former Ekiti State Governor Niyi Adebayo, Lagos State Deputy Governor Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulure,  former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Audu were there.

  • ‘Nigerians ‘ll vote out PDP in 2015’

‘Nigerians ‘ll vote out PDP in 2015’

Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Isaac Kekekeme has said the gale of impeachment targeted at opposition governors by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not stop Nigerians from rejecting the ruling party in the 2015 general elections.

He said even if President Goodluck Jonathan impeached all APC governors, he will fail to impeach the votes of the masses and members of the progressives party.

Kekekeme spoke at the party’s new secretariat on Oyemekun Road in Akure, the state capital, at the inauguration of the local government’s branch of the APC Women’s Leaders.

He described the PDP as a snake, whose head has been cut off.

The chairman stressed that the PDP has seven months to remain in power in Nigeria.

Kekekeme urged the women not to be intimidated by their male counterpart before, during and after the elections.

He advised the women to make themselves a part of the party’s victory in February next year.

Kekemeke admonished the women to preach unity and cohesion within the party, saying all members of the party should be consolidated with a vision to win the coming elections.

Besides, he tasked women to come forward and vying for political positions like their male counterparts, assuring them of the support of the State executives.

The APC chair also reiterated that there is no sharing of party’s fund by individuals, urging everybody to contribute morally and financially to the development of the Party.

Speaking earlier, the state women leader, Mrs Omolara Atiba appealed to women to come out and identify themselves with the policy of APC by contesting for elective posts within the party.

Mrs Atiba said the lost of the party is not only for the contestants but for all the party members and supporters.

According to her, women play important roles in political and developmental projects in the nation building.

Rather than running after men to assist them in climbing political ladders after which they would dump them, Mrs Atiba urged her colleagues to struggle and compete with men in seeking relevant positions.

  • ‘PDP can’t defeat APC in Osun’

‘PDP can’t defeat APC in Osun’

Legal luminary and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in this interview with BISI OLADELE, reflects on the recent Ekiti State governorship election and contends that the outcome of the Osun poll will be different.

What is your reaction to the outcome of the Ekiti  State governorship poll?

Well, the Ekiti State election appears to all of us as the harbinger of the major elections in 2015, although we had the Anambra State election before it. But, the Ekiti election served as the opener and the Osun election is fast approaching. These two elections are key to what will happen in 2015 and this worries someone because there is probably something that happened that is not clear to everyone. That result, to people like us, who have had the opportunity to go to Ekiti from Ondo State, and are also neighbours to Ekiti, will agree that the result of the election is not a true reflection of the people’s wish. People have come up with several ideas as to what went right and what went wrong. But I think people are not deceived as to lose sight of the impact of what good governance has done to Ekiti State with Fayemi as the governor it does not follow reason. Or how logical is it that people will push aside achievements as Fayemi has made and vote against him in all local governments?

The APC has lost the governorship election in Ekiti. What does this portend for 2015?

Well, that was why I said the Ekiti  election was a forerunner to the 2015 election for the APC. One can still live by and accommodate the Ondo State election. The ACN then, was not the party in power. It is still tolerable in spite of the fact that the voters’ register was injected with over 160,000 names. The incumbency, we can still say, is one of the major factors. But, here in Ekiti, it does not stand to reason, it is not logical. Those indigenes from Ekiti through the media have just woken up from a bad dream to say this is not possible. What does this now portend for the APC? Of course, it is a dangerous trend, which is why the Osun State election has become one to prove that the APC is still in total control of the Southwest, in spite of whatever has happened in Ondo and Ekiti.

What is the chance of the APC in the Osun governorship election?

Osun State is a different place, no doubt. The governor is a grassroots person. Luckily, that was what probably people did not realise when he started and he talked about “Walk to Live.” That is a mass mobilisation kind of event and this happened every month. I have attended a couple of them and you need to be there to see how people trooped out to follow him. So, in Osun’s case, you need to have attended the rallies. I was at the one in Ile-Ife to see the way people turned out. I am talking about the multitude. You would have seen that it is not one in which they are pretending, people are showing true love to their candidate. So, in Osun’s case it is neither like Ondo nor like Ekiti. Whether we like it or not, Rauf  Aregbesola is enshrined in the minds of the people, not like Ekiti. He is a grassroots person, he has organised programmes which he uses to relate with the people and people still respond.

Many SSS men and other security forces have been deployed in Osun. What is the APC’s view on this?

The APC’s view on this has been clear and said over and over again; that  the over-militarisation of a civil event like an election is not welcome by us. It is an attempt to subvert the will of the people and that was what was done in Ekiti. They carried the militarisation in Ekiti to an extent that the party itself is trying to take up a suit. You do not come in the wee hour of the election and arrest the opposition. You are scaring them and their leadership so that you can perpetrate all sorts of illegalities. This was what happened in the Ekiti State election. Do not bring soldiers. We do not need military men during elections. It is not a war situation. What do we need military men for during elections? If the Nigerian police cannot mobilise enough men and officers during election, then, there is a problem.

So, what will happen during the general elections? They will deploy the entire military force across the country, painting a bad picture for the general election? Our party has said: “No.” We tried in Lagos with some actions saying no to militarisation in election, before election or after election. It is unwarranted, it is dehumanising. Incidentally, when Rotimi Ameachi was harassed out of Ekiti, I was one of those that went to meet him. The soldiers were clear in their words that they had orders not to allow him interact with anyone. You restrict people’s movement. Is that normal? Is it constitutional? He did what he could do, explained himself that he knew the governor. But, he was denied entrance into Ekiti State. They did not allow the plane of Gov. Oshiomhole to take off from Edo State.

The planes of Rabiu Kwakanso and others from Kano State were not allowed to land. The plane of others from Ondo could not take off from Akure back to Ekiti because the airport was closed by the military. You cannot adopt this method and still say that the election was free and fair. It was not. So, these are the examples of unfairness that happened in Ekiti State and we are saying it loud and clear that they should not repeat it in  Osun State. But it appears that they are determined to go ahead to militarise the process, prior to the election and during the election. What I am sure of is that they will be biting more than what they can chew in Osun because people are wiser. They had it in Ekiti, but the Osun people are wiser, they will react to it. Of course, any chaos will disrupt the election, so it will be wise enough if they allow the police to man the civil event.

What is your reaction to the militarisation of elections?

I have said it over and over again that we should now back up our complaints with action. I think our party should start with civil disobedience, if we say no election should hold, especially now that we have military men around. It is not wrong at all. All we have to do is mobilise the people for a peaceful protest. We are not going to burn houses or cause any chaos. We just need to sit down, stage a protest before the election. That is a way to say that this cannot continue. I will advise my party not to take things lightly because you might be here for good, but the military is not here for good. They are not there for good because what has happened in Ekiti State is a signal to us, where Daramola and others were taken from their houses and arrested. We do not want a repetition of that in Osun State. The time has come for us to back our words and complaint with action. The election must not hold, unless the military is taken out of the picture. For someone like me, I believe we do not need the military there for anything. I believe anything the military wishes to do, the police can serve that purpose.

Controversy has trailed the achievements of Governor Aregebesola. Is this not a minus as the state goes to poll?

I think  the APC is going to win the election in Osun State. I have no doubt. I travel there often and I can see the things on ground there already. You know, some matters are based on fallacy and rumour by the PDP candidate and other parties. Let’s ask ourselves, which government is not owing? Even, the Federal Government and the American government is in debt. They are still paying the money. There is no country in the world today that is not in debt, probably not China and that is because of their approach. But there is no country that is not in debt. Even in Nigeria, there is no state that is not in debt. Even Lagos State is in debt. Borrow money to do good things for your state. You have men and material, you have the capability to build. So, there are one or two things you can borrow money and do and people now come up and say he borrowed money for some things. He borrowed money for necessary things and people can say this is what the money was used for. The great schools he built, the Opon Imo device, the uniforms he introduced, the greatest of them is feeding in the schools. It is a known fact that there are several children who attend school today who their parent cannot afford proteinous food for them. This is what is being done in the primary and secondary schools in Osun State. It is a great thing that is being done. It allows the mental development of the children. If he is borrowing money to feed the children so that at the end of the day, he can have good brains who will excel in their primary, secondary and tertiary schools and come out and make the state proud; they will be able to come and bail the state out. It is just pure politics that people are shouting about his borrowing. Which state does not borrow money?

Which of his achievements do you consider the greatest?

The roads. This just did not happen overnight. It must have come from years of researching and travelling. For you to construct the roads, the drains, he has shown that he was truly the Commissioner for Works in Lagos for good eight years. And he has made significant impact on roads. You need to see the good road network here and there. Not just any road, but also the interior ones that can be seen by the people here and there. Those who go to the farm use the roads to go to their farms and also to transport their crops here and there to sell. It becomes easier for them. They do not take short cuts that are stressful and take their time again, and they transport their goods in less than two to three hours. So, it saves them time. It is a great achievement. He has done a lot also in the area of farming. Before, there were some farmers who just get their land, plough the land, plant and leave. But now, there are mechanized ways of farming. Most of them have harvested a lot. Aregbesola also engaged thousands of youths.  People were complaining. They would have been on the road, but now, a lot of them have turned the money they are being paid round and use it to earn more income. There are lots of them who have testified that with the money they were being paid, they have become employers of labour. Some have become self employed. So, when you employ thousands of people, as he has done, it is commendable. Whether anybody likes it or not, the Opon Imo too is a big project. so, apart from feeding and the welfare among countless things he has done, I think Rauf Aregbesola has shown that he is a visionary leader. The vision he has for Osun must be allowed to blossom. I call on the people of Osun not let anybody cut short that vision because the State of Osun is marching forward with him as the governor. In less than four years, Osun will be another Eldorado.

The APC has lost Ekiti and Adamawa states. Now, they want to impeach the Nasarawa State governor. Will this not affect the party in next year’s elections?

It will certainly affect the election. It all depends on what happens in the state. Take Adamawa, for instance. That is not to say that the APC will not win in that state. Assuming they have managed to remove Nyako, we have people like Atiku there, who should be able to work towards producing the next governor. Until we see the final result, we cannot say the APC does not have a chance. With the calibre of people in Adamawa APC and also Atiku, if they put in their best, I think the APC will emerge as the winner in the next election. I want to believe Ekiti is temporary.  The APC will come back, we are in the tribunal and we have our facts. I do not think we have lost those two states. I think we can salvage the elections, salvage through the court process. At the end of the day, we will have the states back. As for Nasarawa, I am sure that, reason will prevail. I am sure that if they set up a panel they will find him not guilty and we will still have Nasarawa. And in 2015, if election is held in February, he is going to come back.

What about Governor Oshiomhole of Edo State?

They here are only jokers in Edo. The people who are in the minority came up and said they wanted to impeach the governor when all they relied on was federal might. I know it is impossible because Oshiomole is a grassroots man and he can mobilize very well. That is what he has been doing all his life. I do not think they have a chance. If they go beyond a particular limit, then he will be able to mobilize people. I assure you of one thing, assuming the Federal Government is able to carry out those things, that is not a sign that they will win the 2015 elections.

The 2015 presidential election is a different thing entirely. There are many things to put into consideration. The Federal Government cannot put the military in one place. It is an election throughout the whole country. The military and the police will spread out and at this time, I think the people will stand by their votes. I have always said it over and over again, if there is an infringement on your right, you do not have to first go to the court. You must stand your ground and seek redress there and then proceed for the action.

There is no amount of court order that will put an end to impunity and it has become a cankerworm that has gone deep into us. It is only in Nigeria that people will do wrong and beat their chest and say: “Yes, we have done it.” And nothing will happen to them. Ideally, in a sane society, you must search your conscience for the wrong you have committed against the people; you must feel bad against it. So, if they fail to feel bad about it, it is the duty of the people to call their bluff. Nigerians must be ready to call the bluff of anyone who believes impunity should be the order of the day. Do not wait for the court to tell you what to do,  if your vote and your voting right is tampered with, call off their bluff there and then.

What you have been saying all along is that PDP is not likely to win the 2015 presidential election. Why do you think so?

I mean it, PDP cannot win because I do not think that people will want to continue with the lack-luster presidency. They are not people who will want to have a clueless presidency. You see, has it ever happened in the history of this society where we have this level of insecurity and the president has no clue to it? Nigerians are no fools, the suffering in this country today in the area of energy and light, that we have spent lot money to purchase darkness, is much. And you expect the person to rule? Nigerians are tired of PDP rule; 15 to 16 years and nothing to show for it. I know the PDP cannot win. The only thing they can do is to want to rig the election and I think Nigerians will call off their bluff. Nigerians must be prepared to do it, whatever it takes; we must be prepared to do it, to call off their bluff.

What is your sincere advice to all voters in Osun State across all political parties?

My sincere advice is: “please come out to vote according to your conscience. You can see the good works. Nigerians have a way of perpetrating negative things. I know another lexicon has come into our own dictionary now called ‘stomach infrastructure.’ Do not let that influence whatever you want to do. Think about it, look at what has been done in the last four years, look at what was done seven years before then, compare it, then make a choice. I can only advise you, the choice is yours. I call on people in the various political parties to consider the assessment, look at what has been done in those seven years and past four years, be honest and vote for Rauf Aregbesola.

  • 500,000 voter cards have been cloned, says APC

500,000 voter cards have been cloned, says APC

About 500,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been cloned in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

It said the cards, which were either unclaimed, not handed over to the authentic owners or were obtained fraudulently, were cloned to rig Saturday’s poll.

In a statement yesterday, APC National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed said: “These cloned cards, mostly in the hands of persons from states other than Osun, are to be used along with the authentic PVCs issued to the electorate during Saturday’s election.

“Already, we can confirm that the hundreds of thousands of people in possession of these cloned cards all over Nigeria, especially in states neighbouring Osun, are being induced monetarily and instructed to super impose their photographs on the cloned PVCs.

“The game plan is for them to arrive early at polling booths on the election day, where conniving electoral officials will turn a blind eye to this fraud by not checking whether or not the names of these impersonators with cloned cards are on the voters registers before accrediting them to vote at the expense of the genuine owners of the cards.

“According to the dubious plan, unscrupulous security agents – both official and unofficial – will be at hand to brutalise, arrest and detain any agent or voter who may want to challenge this illegality.”

“We urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), if it is not part of this diabolical plan, to ensure that only voters registers used to issue out PVCs to voters up till August 4 are used to conduct the election.

“We demand that copies of these registers, which are already in possession of local government electoral officers, be made available to all political parties, at least, 72 hours before the election. Anything short of using the registers containing the names of the authentic voters will not be acceptable.”

The APC thanked residents for providing information that will thwart rigging plans and ensure a credible poll.

Urging the people to be vigilant, it said: “Their desperation knows no bounds, hence they will do anything, no matter how illegal, to thwart the will of the people. But no power is bigger than the people’s power and no inducement is worth anyone’s conscience. The votes of the people of Osun must not only be counted, but must count on Saturday.”

  • Party moves administrative machinery to Osun

Party moves administrative machinery to Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has mandated all its elected members at the state and national levels to converge on Osun today and remain in the state until Saturday’s election.

This, it said, was to support Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the directive covers political appointees in states controlled by the APC.

Also expected in Osogbo are members of the party’s National Executive and the National Elders’ Caucus.

APC said it perceives the election as a celebration of democracy and a harvest time for the party, “whose candidate has worked so hard to implement his mandate and make life more abundant for the people”.

It urged its members in Osun to be vigilant of “desperate tactics being perfected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reap where it did not sow.

The party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said APC will relocate its administrative machinery to Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

During a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Odigie-Oyegun said: “We wish to inform the public and millions of our members and supporters that as from August 4 (yesterday), the National Secretariat of the APC will relocate to Osogbo, Osun State. The national secretariat of our great party will continue to operate from Osogbo until after the governorship election.”

He said the party was determined to protect its votes during the election and hailed Osun people for their steadfastness.

Odigie-Oyegun urged the people to ignore any provocation and turn out massively to vote for the APC on Saturday.

  • APC chieftain slams Jonathan

    APC chieftain slams Jonathan

Former Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) Legal Adviser Semwengie Osaro has slammed President Goodluck Jonathan for the militarisation of Osun State.

Osaro was reacting to the President’s comments last Saturday that Osun will be militarised before, during and after Saturday’s governorship election.

He said: “When the President spoke at the mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osogbo, I was not bordered by the PDP’s threats to win or rig the governorship election because I know the APC is fully on ground and any attempt to rig the election will lead to political anarchy.

“I urge Osun people to refuse to be intimidated, come out in large numbers to vote and stay behind to monitor the results to the points of announcement. They must defend their votes because the people’s power will speak clearly come Saturday. Jonathan boasted last Saturday, but we are warning him not to create a war he can win.”

  • APC inaugurates FCT executive committee

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated a 25-member executive for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), even as it inaugurated its AMAC secretariat.

While inaugurating members of the new executive, the chairman of the party, Hon. Abdulmalik Usman urged them to embark on mass mobilisation and registration of new members that will place the party in a good stead in future elections.

He further said new members who will be issued the permanent voter’s card will bring about the change which Nigerians desperately need.

Usman said the APC in the FCT will do everything necessary, be it room-to-room or house-to-house campaign to ensure that residents, including those in the most remote parts of the FCT, are mobilised for registration.

His words: “Your task is to ensure that the slogan of the party which is change starts from you as a leader and it will be extended to your followers in all the wards. Your first assignment is to go around the wards, mobilising and sensitising the people, reminding them of the need to have their voter’s card.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will commence issuance of the new permanent voter’s card for those that were underage during the last registration and who have come of age now. It will be your job to encourage them to register.

“Mobilising people to register for their voter’s card will be the weapon that we will use to effect the change that we yearn for. There will be no change without the voter’s card and the card remains the only weapon that we can use to change the government of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“You will have to do whatever it takes; if it is a door-to-door or house-to-house campaign to mobilise our people at the grassroots to make sure that we come out en masse to get that weapon which is our voter’s card for use on Election Day to chase these people out of power, you have to do it.”

On the Ekiti election Usman said: “The Ekiti election is a lesson to both parties. We all know that during the Ekiti election, the PDP government used the military to make sure that they scare people from coming out to vote. In this particular election and the general elections, it cannot happen because the number of the military in this country cannot take the equal number of what was sent to Ekiti if sent to all states. So, there will be a free atmosphere for Nigerians to vote.”

One of the members of the executive, Emma Ezeazu who donated cars and motorcycles to ward chairmen said: “I donated the cars and motorcycles to make the party stronger, to build it and to make it stand a better chance to perform well in future elections. We will mobilise our party members and others to register and collect their cards.

“Nigerians need to understand the need to have a strong opposition, without which our democracy will not grow. Whatever I’m doing is to strengthen the opposition so that there will be a great competition for the benefit of the people.”

AMAC APC Publicity Secretary, Yunusa Hassan, explained that AMAC executive comprises 25 members drawn from the different wards. He also said there are areas where motorcycles are not permitted in the municipal council. This, he said, informed the provision of cars for some ward chairmen while others were given motorcycles.
