Excitement as commissioner donates Easter gifts

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, has advised members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba and Mainland Local Government Council Areas to close ranks and work for the progress of the party.

The commissioner spoke during his annual Easter festival distribution of gifts to APC members in the two LGAs which held at the Mainland Independent Group (MIG) office in Yaba.

The items include: Sewing machines, hair dryers, grinding machines and various foodstuffs.

Bello, who was represented by his spokesperson, Alhaji Ibrahim Megida, said: “My desire to give to members of our great party is in conformity with the spirit of our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, who are noted for their high-level performances.”

Bello noted that the APC is the fastest growing political party in Africa and urged all its members to work in harmony to ensure victory for the party during the 2015 general elections.

He added that the target of the party was to assume power at the centre, where the vision of its leadership to transform the lives of all Nigerians would be realised.

Group accuses APC of preparing for war

The Save Ekiti Coalition (SEC) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State of preparing for war in the June 21 governorship election.

The group was reacting to Governor Kayode Fayemi’s criticism of Vice-President Namadi Sambo’s statement that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was going to war in Ekiti and Osun states.

It described Fayemi’s media attack on Sambo as hypocritical and deceitful, added that “it was the height of deceit for anyone to say that Ekiti State under Fayemi and his APC is at peace.”

In a statement yesterday by its Convener, Mr Lere Olayinka, the SEC said: “The Vice President has assured that the principle of one man one vote, and transparent election would be observed in the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.”

    Groups cautions Lagos APC

A group in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, the New Lagos Movement (NLM), has kicked against the alleged plan to zone the party’s governorship ticket to Lagos East Senatorial District.

It threatened to sue the party, it fails to confirm or deny the alleged plan.

Acting NLM Chairman Niyi Akinsiju said zoning is not in the party’s constitution and urged APC leaders to intervene.

Addressing reporters yesterday, Akinsiju said: “While we do not discountenance the culture of zoning, even as it is not in the party’s constitution, it must be done by negotiation and is expected to recognise the interest of all. Nevertheless, we are opposed to these sentiments of geography, religion or ethnicity.

“A party will be strong when members can arrive at a decision and discuss issues amicably. Therefore, the imposition of a candidate will alienate a large section of the party.

“Our intent is to alert national officers and appeal to our leaders to allow democracy to thrive in Lagos APC. We have no intention of defecting to another party, as we are always ready to water the seeds of progressivism in our party, believing it to be our heritage.”

    APC faithful urged to unite

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr. Omodele Morofu, has urged party members to be wary of divisive elements.

Speaking with reporters yesterday, he said the warning became necessary in view of rumours peddled in the council through text messages that a candidate had been imposed on the party.

Morufu, who is the Chairman of Ward A, urged members to remain committed to the APC’s success in future elections, adding: “We are not the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that uses power arbitrarily to rig elections. I was made to understand last night that a rumour monger is sending illegal text messages through the APC’s alert system, claiming that a candidate has being imposed on us.”

He said the machinations of the opposition or divisive elements would not deter the party’s success in 2015.

Morufu said the rumour was meant to cause disunity in the party and thanked members for remaining steadfast.

APC calls on abductors of school girls to release them, sues for peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the abductors of school girls in Borno State to release them immediately and without conditions, in the spirit of the season.

In comments made by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, at the dedication of the N150 million Catholic Church in his hometown of Oro in Kwara State yesterday, the party said whatever grievances the abductors may have, they have nothing to do with innocent school girls.

It, therefore, urged the kidnappers to free the girls who remain in their custody and cease forthwith all acts of violence against innocent citizens.

‘’Violence has never resolved any issue. Dialogue is always the preferred and civilised way to go in resolving any conflict, no matter how difficult. We are, therefore, calling on those who have been perpetrating unbridled violence to stop their despicable acts and renounce violence,’’ APC said.

The party congratulated the church on the successful completion of the magnificent edifice, and hailed it for forging the spirit of love, tolerance and peace within the community.

‘’It is noteworthy that the annual Ramadan Talk hosted by the APC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, is held within the church grounds. There is no better example of religious tolerance and commitment to societal peace than this,’’ it said.

  • 2015: Amaechi, APC are jittery, says Wike

2015: Amaechi, APC are jittery, says Wike

•He is a dreamer; we cannot be jittery over a sinking ship – Gov

The Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has alleged that the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and his supporters are jittery and afraid.

He alleged that the governor and his supporters are making efforts to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike also accused Amaechi, who is the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), of planting moles in the PDP, stressing that members of the party knew them and their movements.

The minister who is a former chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt and the Director-general of the Amaechi Campaign Organisation in 2011, described Rivers as a PDP state, while stating that the party will take over the seat of power in Rivers in 2015, from the APC.

The supervising minister of education spoke yesterday at the Krisdera Stadium, Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area in Orashi Region of Rivers State, where a former governor of the state, Dr. Peter Odili, hails from.

The event was the first anniversary of the Chief Felix Obuah-led executive of the PDP, which came into office through the judgment of an Abuja High Court on April 15, 2013, which sacked the Chief Godspower Ake-led executive, but being challenged at the Court of Appeal.

Amaechi, who spoke through the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, described Wike as a day dreamer; stressing that he (Rivers governor) and his teeming supporters could not be jittery over a sinking PDP ship.

The NGF chairman also asked the supervising minister of education to resign and declare his governorship ambition, noting that no right-thinking person would leave a place of comfort (APC) for hell (PDP), describing Rivers as an APC state.

The Rivers governor stated that yesterday’s supposed crowd at the stadium in Omoku, from the 23 LGAs of the state, would not be up to the crowd of APC members in Obio/Akpor LGA of Rivers State.

Wike, a two-term Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council said: “When the Chairman (Obuah) and his team won on April 15, 2013, they said in the next three weeks, the government would step aside. Today (yesterday), we are one year and they have moved to another party.

“Instead for them to concentrate on what is happening in their party, they are interested in what is happening in the PDP and they are all making efforts to come back to the party.

“If they are coming back to the party, they must come in a proper way. Anybody that wants to follow the window, we will throw him out through the window. I urge you to continue to work for the PDP. I urge you to continue to remain steadfast, because you cannot achieve what you want to achieve, without commitment and sacrifice.”

He added, “What is important to us is how PDP will take back the seat of Government House, Port Harcourt in 2015. Let Amaechi not rush. Let him take it calmly. Let him take it easy. He has been telling various stories to different people and groups. All those people he has planted in PDP. We are aware. We know them and we know their movements.

“They are saying it is the turn of this and that. Come to the party. The party will tell you the war canoe house it is going. Come and participate in the affairs of the party, in order to be waxing stronger.”

The supervising minister of education also stated that anybody who was committed to the affairs of the PDP, who believed in the party, would make sacrifice, reiterating that members of the PDP were one family, which he claimed was why APC members were afraid.

He said there must be a party first, for people to say they wanted to vie, while urging all the members of the PDP in the state to come together and work for the party.

Wike said: “When the time comes for who will be here and who will be there, we shall all sit down and take a collective decision. We have one common enemy, which by the grace of God, we shall chase them out of Government House, Port Harcourt come 2015.

“The former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has expressed his support for all of you, for what you are doing and that the next time this opportunity comes, he will be with you.”

He added, “Our assignment is to mobilise. Knowing full well that somebody has challenged us, saying he gave PDP two million votes and that he is going to deny President Goodluck Jonathan the two million votes. Let us not dissipate our energy. The only work we have to do is to make sure all of us mobilise, have sleepless nights and to be sure that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan emerges as the presidential candidate of the PDP and thereafter wins the general election come 2015.”

The supervising minister of education also disclosed that President Jonathan would be in Port Harcourt for the Southsouth Unity Rally of the PDP on May 3, while pleading with members of the party to conduct themselves well.

The Rivers State Chairman of the PDP, in his welcome address earlier, noted that the road in the last one year had been characterised with some challenges and obstacles, but still with some inspiring moments, with the challenges and obstacles surmounted through the support of the members of the PDP and their dedication to the party.

Obuah said: “Let me restate my resolve to give equal opportunity and a level playing field to every party member to express his or her political rights, as we approach the 2015 general elections, irrespective of social status, height and body weight, ethnic background, religious affiliation or colour.”

The Rivers PDP chairman also urged members of the party in the state to work for and support the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015.

  • Defection: 37 Reps warn against moves to declare seats vacant

Defection: 37 Reps warn against moves to declare seats vacant

The 37 members of the House of Representatives, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday warned against stampeding Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to declare their seats vacant.

They said those embarking on prejudicial comments should stop it or face contempt charge in court.

They also reminded apologists in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) behind the agitation against them to note that some lawmakers also defected to PDP and the declaration of seats vacant would apply across board.

The lawmakers gave the warning in a statement in Abuja by Andrew Uchendu, against the backdrop of fresh moves to force them to vacate their seats.

The statement said: “We have noticed that it has become commonplace every now and then to read in the media comments and calls on the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to declare vacant the seats of the 37 lawmakers who defected from PDP to APC.

“One cannot but be amused at such calls due to its inexplicable display of ignorance of our system. And when such calls emanate from people who should otherwise know better, the intention to mislead the public immediately becomes apparent.

“At the risk of being cited for contempt, it needs to be reiterated that the issue of whether a seat is or not vacant is a matter before a competent court in Abuja and we all know that once a matter is before the court, it behooves on civilized and law abiding citizens to stay away from drawing conclusions or deciding the matter before the court does so.”

The statement continued, “Such calls at this period amount to contempt of the judicial process. Those who are so concerned and eager to see the defectors out have option to approach the Federal High Court through a motion of joinder, and join PDP as plaintiffs in the ongoing matter.”

“Our argument before the court is that only Mr. Speaker is constitutionally empowered to declare seats vacant after satisfying himself with some facts.

“And if the speaker were to declare seats vacant, these PDP apologists should note that it will cut across all parties whose members have so far cross-carpeted in one way or the other. Thus declaring seat vacant, after due process has been followed, would not only affect APC as a party.”

The statement appeals to all “to stay away from all speculative comments and refrain from heating the polity until the judicial process comes to some determination,” saying “This arrant display of ignorance and brigandage is enough and our members will not hesitate to approach the court to file contempt charges against people who seek to be more politically concerned than the PDP itself.”

APC holds hitch-free council congress in Anambra

The All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday held its postponed congresses in 20 of the 21 local government areas .

But the congress was rescheduled in Onitsha North, following a mix up.

It will now hold on Saturday.

State leader of the party iSenator Chris Ngige, who represents Anambra Central , told reporters yesterday that the congresses were free and fair.

He said the people elected their leaders, some of them through consensus in an orderly manner.

Ngige debunked claims that the national leadership cancelled yesterday’s congress, describing the rumour as the handiwork of APC’s enemies.

The senator said the congresses were held according to APC guidelines, adding that the mix up that led to some elective officials moving to Oyi instead of Onitsha North had been ratified.

At some councils yesterday, materials for the congresses were distributed as early as 8 a.m.

Some councils visited yesterday included Idemili North, Idemilin South, Njikoka, Orumba South, Awka North and Awka South, among others.

One of the APC state Chairmanship contenders from Orumba South, Chief Ben Oranusi, said the congresses went smooth.

He said: “APC is a peace-loving party, we are not like others, we did our things in the party according to the party’s guidelines with our leader, Senator Ngige, in control.

“We thank God that forces or agents of darkness who always put stud in good things have not identified with APC,” Oranusi said.

The exercise yesterday was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ebele Otti was the INEC electoral officer in Idemili North.

Chief Denis Ngene, one of the APC’s congress chairmen and Onyinye Okongwu, the party’s woman leader in Anambra, described the congress as smooth.

The party’s disciplinary committee that investigated Senator Annie Okonkwo’s alleged offences had submitted its report to the national leadership.

Ngige said yesterday that the party would take a decision on Okonkwo.

  • Fayemi: This election is about Ekiti’s future

Fayemi: This election is about Ekiti’s future

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) has sealed the  endorsement of Governor Kayode Fayemi as its candidate for the June 21election in the Fountain of Knowledge  at its primaries in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. Correspondent SULAIMAN SALAWUDEEN reports.

The delegates to the primaries came from 132 towns and villages across the far-flung state. They converged on the Trade Fair Complex, Ado Ekiti, the state capital with one accord. They had a mission. At exactly 11 am, the voting started. In the afternon, the result of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries was ready.

Exuding happiness at the orderly conduct of the delegates, the Chairman of the six-member APC Primaries Panel, Senator Osita Izunaso, declared Governor Kayode Fayemi the winner and governorship candidate. On that note, his battle for re-election gathered momentum.

Fayemi had no rival at the shadow poll. Thus, as the lone aspirant, the primaries paled into the ratification of his endorsement as the flag bearer by the party. The governor was conscious of the significance of the endorsement and its implication for the party. Thanking the delegates, Fayemi promised never to let them down. He said that the contest is not a personal battle, but the continuation of his rescue mission in Ekitiland.

Few weeks ago, the war scholar and pro-democracy activist had collected his nomination form, in compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines. However, before the governor signified his intention to seek a fresh mandate, many groups and associations have endorsed him for a second term. Also, party chieftains across the three senatorial districts, APC governors and other national leaders have endorsed him in Ado-Ekiti.

For Fayemi, the intra-party contest was a walk over. Declaring him the winner, Izunaso, who is the APC Interim Organising Secretary, said that the governor polled 192, 767 votes. Other panel members-Alhaji Abubakar Suleja, Isah Maduto, Capt. Bala Jubril (rtd), Alhaji Yemi Sanusi, and Steve Asimoke-applauded the governor’s performance in the last three and half years, stressing that the bloc vote underscored his popularity.

Fayemi was accompanied by his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, and his wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi. Also, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, Ekiti APC Interim Chairman Chief Jide Awe and the Chief of Staff, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu. witnessed the primaries.

Fayemi expressed gratitude to the party for its unflinching support, love and solidarity. He noted that there was no case of unruly behaviour among delegates. He hailed the validity of internal democracy, saying that the APC has become a model for consolidating democracy. Fayemi said that the process was as important as the real election, adding that it signified the APC’s commitment to transparency.

The historic exercise trailed the governor’s endorsement for a second term in December 2012 by stakeholders at Iyin-Ekiti. The endorsement was tagged: “Iyin Accord.”

The “Iyin Accord,” according to party chieftains, was a watershed. The accord, in their view, was designed by party leaders to give the signal that Fayemi’s mandate would be renewed by the progressive family in Ekiti.

The meeting where the ‘Accord’ was reached was actually held at the instance of the former Governor Adeniyi Adebayo, who is the Southwest APC leader. At the meeting were party elders, top government officials, women and youth leaders from 16 councils. They said that Fayemi deserved a second term because he has performed as governor.

At the meeting, party leaders also reflected on the future of the state. After reviewing the activities of Fayemi Administration, they resolved to vote for continuity in 2014. Speakers included Adebayo, Senator Tony Adeniyi (Ekiti South), Dr. Omirin, Hon. Ife Arowosoge, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Ganiyu Owolabi, and Chief Ronke Okusanya. According to them, the developmental efforts of the administration must continue beyond this year.

Adebayo hailed the stakeholders for endorsing Fayemi for another term, noting that the governor has impacted positively on the lives of the people. “I think he deserves a second term, just as our people are clamouring,” Adebayo said.

Awe, who was the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Chairman, also aligned with the position of the party elders. He said that Fayemi has become the toast of the party because he has lived up to expectation. He said that the ‘Iyin Accord’ was not “by accident, but a deliberate attempt to show appreciation for what the governor has done in the transformation of the state.”Awe said the feats included infrastructural development, financial empowerment, job creation and social security scheme for elderly citizens.

Also, in July last year, the ACN National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, visited the Ekiti progressive family at Ado-Ekiti. At the meeting, Tinubu put another seal on the gale of endorsements. It was witnessed by former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Dele Alake, the party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Senator James Kolawole. Also present were Deputy Governor Adelabu, Adebayo, Omirin and Adaramodu, Senators Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central), Adeniyi (Ekiti South) and Olubunmi Adetumbi (Ekiti North), and Arowosoge. Commissioners, special advisers and assistants, local government chairmen and party officials were also there.

Tinubu, who spoke for about one and a half hours, said the visit was to settle the misunderstanding within the party, ahead of the poll. He said: “We have not come to impose somebody on you. We have come just to settle a quarrel. Americans would normally say, if the bicycle is not faulty, you don’t take it to the repairer. Fayemi has passed; will you promote him or not?” The question drew a deafening ‘yes’ from the audience.

Tinubu said that Ekiti was witnessing a “kukulaja”, which translates to “the fiery creature at the rooftop”. It was a vague reference to the personality clashes between Fayemi and the House of Representatives member, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, who also had the intention of running for ther governorship. The National Leader added: “When we got there (the political headship of the state), why would we not know how to manage our success? If anyone here knows Opeyemi, tell him that Jagaban has sent you to him to drop his ambition. Invite him and appeal to him. We will return later to do official endorsement”.

Tinubu urged Fayemi and the party leadership to work for reconciliation. He said: “There is no shame in politics; everyone’s turn would come sooner than later.”

Akande also called for a truce. He observed that the party would confront three challenges: how to merge with other parties without experiencing cultural hiccups, how to position the party for the elections in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states and how to unseat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from national leadership.

He stressed: “We are going to merge with another party, but is our culture going to change? Three elections are on the way, but how do we prepare for them? The last task is how do we remove the PDP from Abuja? Our mission today is to set in motion processes to settle our in-house misunderstanding. If any exists, we must settle it to move ahead.”

However, the endorsement of Fayemi by the party leadership did not go down well with some members. Bamidele objected to the endorsement, saying that it was not a collective decision.

He said: “The endorsement of the governor by a section of our party is a step that is allowed in politics. But I want to say that other party members who are interested in the position can still show interest. ACN is not a lawless party. It is a party that believes in the rule of law and democratic tenets, so I am confident that the rules will be followed strictly under this circumstance”.

But, sources disclosed that Bamidele never disclosed his plans to contest the governorship to the party leadership.

Before the last weekend primaries, Fayemi has kicked off his campaign in Ado-Ekiti. The campaign train has not stopped since then. It has rolled into some local governments with a mammoth crowd coming to affirm his endorsement as the flag bearer.
