APC calls for probe of massive thefts, corruption

Party warns against plot to unseat five governors

The Opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday urged the National Assembly to launch a probe into “constitutional violations” by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The party said the lawmakers should act in consonance with the dictates of the constitution “to save our nation from falling off a fiscal cliff caused by excessive theft and corruption”.

The APC, in a communique signed by its Interim National Chair Chief Bisi Akande after the 7th regular meeting of its Interim National Executive Committee (NEC), followed up its call on Sunday for Jonathan’s impeachment.

Yesterday’s meeting was attended by Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano), who defected last month along with three of their colleagues from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Governors of Adamawa, Sokoto and Kwara states, who also defected to the party, were represented at the meeting.

Also there was the leader of the New PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Dr. Ogbononanya Onu and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff also attended the meeting.

The APC alleged gross abuse of the ecological funds “through its selective and unjust disbursement to only non-APC states”. Such states – 16 in all – were recently given N2billion each – secretly.

It also noted the “revelation of the diversion of revenues that ought to have been paid into the Federal Account running into trillions of naira”. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has said about $49billion of such cash, which should have been remitted to the Federation Account by the Nigeria Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were unremitted. The NNPC has disagreed.

The APC also alleged that “other budget amounts for parastatals , pensions and the fuel subsidy that ought to have been properly accounted for are similarly plundered with impunity”.

Sanusi raised the allegation in a letter to the President, saying NNPC failed to remit $49.8b into the Federation Account.

About N500 billion that should have been remitted to the SURE-P – a government interventionist agency – has also been declared un-remitted.

The ministry of Finance has also denied that the money is “missing”.

The APC said the “serial failure” of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct successful by-elections in some states – Imo, Delta and Jigawa- as well as the governorship election in Anambra State, had raised doubts about INEC’s capability to conduct a credible election in 2015.

It spoke about intimidation of its members in Abia State and the impunity in Rivers State, which it said could plunge the country into political turmoil.

“Sadly, in the course of the meeting, the APC learnt that another deadly attack was perpetrated against the Rivers Government House where the office of the Deputy Governor was partly destroyed. This and other acts of impunity clearly show the PDP, its agents and governments to be lawless. The APC warns that these acts demonstrate clearly that this government is anti-people, dictatorial and would go to any length to plunge the country into chaos.

“The APC is concerned with the situation in Rivers State. This display of impunity and the Faustian bargain between the police commissioner and a handful of rebel legislators has gone on for a full year. It must stop. Now is the time for all men and women of goodwill to speak up against the assault on an elected government and violations of the right of Rivers citizens. The international community is hereby put on notice that Nigeria’s democratic journey unravels and Rivers State might be the lightening torch for Nigeria’s descent into impunity.

“We wish to re-state that whatever touches one APC state affects the entire party. Our party will therefore not stand idly by and watch democracy desecrated in Rivers State or elsewhere in the country for that matter.”

The APC also warned that it would not accept “the deliberate disenfranchisement of large swathes of our citizenry”, vowing to fight to defend the right of every eligible Nigerian voter to vote.

“We also want to alert the Federal Government that any attempt to extend the state of emergency without any justification will be resisted by every lawful and constitutional means”, the party said, adding:

“President Jonathan should, therefore, live up to his responsibilities by ensuring that every part of Nigeria is safe enough for elections, as our citizens expect nothing less.”

The APC had earlier alerted the nation of what it described as the strategy of the Jonathan administration to depopulate areas it has strong following and suppress voter turnout in the Northern and Southwest states through deliberate exacerbation of insecurity.

“We suspect that wittingly or unwittingly the recent declaration of INEC that elections are not likely to take place in states under state of emergency is in furtherance of this agenda,” it added.

The communiqué said touched on what it described as an attempt to remove the five governors who defeated to it. It said: “The APC has noted with concern the threats of the PDP to procure a pliant judge to declare the seats of the G-5 governors vacant in spite of the Supreme Court decision in the case of Atiku in 2007.

“It is of note that several times governors, including legislators from other parties have defected from the ANPP and PPA to the PDP even when their former parties were not factionalised without any consequence. The APC hereby warns the PDP to desist from words and deeds of impunity that threaten our stability and democracy.

“ We also hope that the judiciary will not be a party to the deliberate promotion of lawlessness and impunity in our country. APC will give its governors and lawmakers the necessary support in defence of their rights and freedoms of association.”

    Senate rejects impeachment call

The Senate is opposed to calls for President Goodluck Jonathan’s impeachment.

The chairman, Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, noted yesterday that calls for Jonathan’s impeachment lacked in merit.

Abaribe spoke at a news conference after the upper chamber rose from a closed door session, which lasted over one hour.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the National Assembly to impeach Jonathan for alleged gross misconduct.

The APC said Jonathan’s impeachment would save the country from imminent collapse.

Asked about the Senate’s position on the call, Abaribe said: “The Senate’s position is that the call for impeachment of the President is utter rubbish.”

“We have heard of the call for the President’s impeachment and as far as the Senate is concerned, it is utter rubbish,” Abaribe added.

The APC said it made the call with the belief that Jonathan’s impeachment was a legitimate constitutional option available to the National Assembly to protect democracy and ensure unity.

Abaribe also said that the conference committee of the National Assembly set up to resolve the differences on the appropriate oil benchmark for 2014 budget was set to resume its sitting yesterday.

Encomiums for Lagos APC chieftain at book launch

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered at the Eko Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday at the book presentation of one of the party’s leaders, Prince Tajudeen Olusi.

The 393-page book, titled: “Do not be a low mean man….. The story of a Prince of Peace”, was reviewed by Prof. Siyanbola Oyefeso, a former lecturer at the Lagos State University (LASU).

APC members turned the event into a celebration of the author, showering encomiums on him.

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, in his welcome address, said: “We are here to celebrate and honour a living legend, a veritable grassroot leader, an elder statesman, a gentleman, former federal legislator, political leader, a great thinker, a socialite with deep passion for social development and emancipation of the people. We are here to celebrate a father and an inspiration to many people, including my humble self. Today, we celebrate a towering figure in the Southwest and in Nigerian politics.”

Gbajabiamila said Olusi’s journey has been filled with sacrifices for Lagos and Nigeria. According to him, Olusi pitched himself with the progressives and fought vehemently for the restoration of democracy during the military era.

APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said Olusi should be celebrated for the role he played in the progressives’ struggle since he joined politics some decades ago.

Tinubu, who was represented by former Lagos State Commissioner for Health Dr. Leke Pitan, said the level of leadership demonstrated and the principled position taken by Olusi portrayed him as a transparent and honest leader and politician.

He said when Olusi lost the Lagos City Council chairmanship, he took it in good faith.

“We commend you for the role you have played and that you are still playing. Since you never deviated from the progressive movement, you will continue to lead us, so that we can benefit from your wisdom,” Tinubu added.

APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, who was represented by Afenifere chieftain Senator Ayo Fasanmi, described Olusi as a rare leader, whose integrity has never been found wanting.

Akande said: “I hold him in high esteem for his transparency, integrity and consistency.”

Fasanmi said the book launch was the first public function he was attending in Lagos in the past three years.

Oyefeso said the book has corrected several erroneous impressions created in the history of Lagos. He said the book is about Lagos monarchy, people, history of Islam and party administration.

Oyefeso said Olusi was revered in Lagos history and culture, such that people doing research on Lagos approach him for factual information. He said the first civilian governor of Lagos State said he relied on Olusi when he wrote a piece, titled: “A case for Lagos”.

Oyefeso described the author’s father, the late Oba Sanusi Olusi of Lagos, as a peaceful monarch, who was instrumental to resolving a dispute between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Olubadan in 1939.

He said the late Oba Sanusi was in constant touch with monarchs outside Yorubaland, such as the Attah of Igala and the Emir of Ilorin, during his reign.

Dignitaries at the event include Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye; Senator Anthony Adefuye; former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba; Alhaji Musliu Smith; Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Chief Henry Ajomale; Erelu Abiola Dosumu; Alhaja Oluranti Adebule; Mr. Olawale Oshun; Oba Olatunji Hamzat; Chief Aro Lambo and Mr. Yakub Balogun.

Also present were Otunba Segun Adesegun; Dr Adeniji Adele; Prince Kayode Olowu; Alhaji Olanrewaju Rasaq; Mr. Dapo Sasore; Chief Adekunle Ali; Mr. Razaq Balogun; Mrs. Folashade Ashafa; Prince Lisade Biobaku; Alhaja Abimbola Jakande; Mr. Hakeem Masha; Mrs. Olatoun Adeniran; Mr. Alawiye King; Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose; Chief Tunde Adeniji; Mr. George Sadiku and Mr. Ademola Sadiq.

In her vote of thanks, Senator Tinubu thanked God for sparing the author’s life “to give us a document that has been missing in the history of our state”.

She described Olusi as very knowledgeable, a mentor and a role model in her constituency, Lagos Central Senatorial District.

Mrs. Tinubu said: “He trained me and many others to be good politicians. We have benefited from his vast experience and we pray he will continue to guide us for a long time to come.”

APC hails Aregbesola on council creation bill

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has hailed Governor Rauf Aregbesola on the presentation of the bill for the creation of 27 local council development areas (LCDAs) to the House of Assembly.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, APC described the governor’s move as “a great step in imprinting himself in the hearts of the people”.

Stressing that the governor has fulfilled all his electioneering promises, the party said: “Aregbesola is changing the face of politics from that of deceit to unimaginable credibility within a short period of three years. Aregbesola is not just about to create new councils, but set a precedence by making them more cost effective to run through a parliamentary system.

“This is typical of a leader that is thinking outside the box; a blessing for which Osun people are grateful to God. New councils will bring governance closer to the people and make it more participatory.”

APC alleged that some politicians in the opposition were planning to destroy the billboards of its aspirants.

It urged residents to be vigilant and report billboard vandals to the police.

Emergence of APC good for Nigeria’s democracy – Oyegun

Former governor of Edo, Chief Odigie Oyegun has said that Nigeria’s democracy is growing because the country has managed to improve the condition for a genuine democracy.

He said the emergence of All Progressives Party (APC) has presented the people with a genuine choice.

Oyegun stated this on Tuesday while fielding questions from journalists in Benin.

He however noted that in spite of the progress made, much still needed to be done for Nigerians to enjoy full benefit of democracy.

According to the former governor, “Though Nigerians can now choose between parties of equal strength, we still need free and fair elections so that the right to choice is not mortgage.

“This is still lacking judging from recent elections in Delta and Anambra states. Elections conducted in these states tell us in clear terms that we have a long way to go in terms of free and fair election.”

Oyegun said free and fair elections are basic and fundamental; otherwise, the politic can’t survive.

On the defection of some People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the APC, Oyegun said, “The PDP provided the platform for them to defect.”

He said if not for the fact that the aggrieved governors and some members of the ruling party had an alternative; they would have remained in the PDP.

“The fact that they have a strong vibrant and reliable alternative and the growing discontent; we would not have had the opportunity of welcoming this people to our fold,” he added.

On the two governors who backed out of the defection plan at the last minute, Oyegun attributed it to the peculiar political environment in which the governors operate.

According to him, “This is because people have their different level of courage, tolerance and consideration of timing of what they will do and what they will not do.

“What we have are those who are determined, courageous and bold that Nigeria truly needs a change.”

Anambra poll: INEC has no record of election staff

For the fourth day running, the Awka, Anambra State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has failed to produce a list of permanent and ad hoc staff deployed by the electoral umpire for the November 16, 17 and 30 elections.

Besides, INEC is yet to produce the voter register ordered for any ward, except for one in Aguata Local Government Area.

All Progressives Congress (APC) lawyers have been inspecting election materials for four days, without the required staff list that forms part of the documents ordered to be produced for inspection and copying.

INEC officials pleaded for patience to enable them produce the list today.

A source close to INEC said the list does not exist, adding that “it is being put together now”.

An official, who was a Polling Assistant in Idemili North, was overheard at the INEC office in Awka venting her frustrations because she was asked to complete another form last Friday.

According to her, “they told us that the arrested Electoral Officer for Idemili North has the list of all the staff who worked in the elections for Idemili North, so we cannot be paid until another list is constructed”.

INEC is yet to provide the voucher for payment of electoral staff, another vital document requested by APC lawyers and ordered by the Gubernatorial Election Tribunal.

“We will give them the benefit of the doubt till tomorrow as they requested,” Bona Oraekwe, member of the legal team said.

The tribunal, headed by Justice J K Kaigama, last Wednesday, ordered INEC to avail APC of election materials used for the conduct of the governorship elections. They include voter register for the three-phased elections. The court also granted the prayers of Emeka Ngige (SAN), leading a team of other lawyers for INEC to produce Forms EC8A,EC8B EC8C,EC8D, EC8G,EC8E (results sheets at all levels) used for the elections.

    ‘Disregard PDP’s criticism, remain focused’

A group, the Forum of Former Chairmen of Local Governments in Edo South, has urged Governor Adams Oshiomhole not to be disturbed by the criticisms from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chairman and former chief of Egor Local Government Mr. Crosby Eribo, who spoke yesterday, hailed the governor for his humility in apologising to a widow over his outburst.

He said although the PDP politicised the issue, “Oshiomhole’s conscience is clean and God would have heard him.”

Eribo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, asserted that “what Orbih, the PDP chairman, is doing is to cook up fictitious claims against the finances of the state to distract the governor. But we are glad that Oshiomhole is not that kind of leader, who listens to charlatans. As a forum, we believe Oshiomhole is the best governor the state has had and we want him to continue his good work. He should not allow himself to be distracted by PDP’s lies.”

    ‘Why we launched Asiwaju Foundation’

The Asiwaju Grassroot Foundation (AGF) was established to complement the developmental efforts of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, AGF National Coordinator Akanbi Saheed Afonja has said.

According to Afonja, the AGF is a body of true democrats; young patriots, progressives and professionals, who strongly believe in Tinubu’s philosophy.

He said there are no special criteria for joining the group.

Afonja said the group is involved in politics, national service and philanthropy.

He said: “We are into charity and educational support programmes. We donate gifts to orphanages and the destitute. We donate educational materials to schools. We are involved in women support and empowerment programmes, especially for the aged, who have no one to care for them.”
