  • Budget presentation: NANS wants NASS to apologise to Nigerians

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wants  members of the National Assembly to apologise to Nigerians for what it described as lawmakers’  unruly behaviour during President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 budget presentation .

The Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, made the call yesterday  in Abeokuta.

Adeyemi condemned the lawmakers’ behaviour, saying that it had further tarnished the external image of the country.

He urged the lawmakers to always promote the integrity of the country, while according due respect to its leaders.

He stressed that the legislators should jettison personal and political interests while treating matters of national interest.

He said:”Nigerian students believe that members of the National Assembly should be role models to Nigerian youths and students by displaying worthy and enviable character.

“It is important to place respect for the honour and integrity of our dear country above any personal or political interests.

“We, hereby, call on the leadership of the National Assembly to, as a matter of necessity, apologise to the entire people of Nigeria over the members’ unruly conduct during the president’s budget presentation,” he said.

The NANS spokesperson, nonetheless, urged the National Assembly members to scrutinise the 2019 appropriation bill before its passage so as to ensure the outcome was in the best interest of all Nigerians.

  • ‘Pastors should apologise to Nigerians’

General Overseer of Agape Believers’ Church, Lagos and National Director Satsa Nations (Saved to Save Nations) Rev Bola Omokorede spoke with Sunday Oguntola on impact of the church and sundry issues. Excerpts:

What involvement should the church have in building the nation?

It is seriously absurd that Church in Nigeria seems to have lost her taste. Nation building does not only lie in the hands of political leaders. It is not hidden that political leaders have failed us. But it becomes worse when the church that is ought to rescue the nation now unconsciously join league with politicians to bring the nation down.

    In what way?

Pastors are supposed to be the watchmen for wellbeing of the people because they are spiritual leaders. The work of a pastor is beyond leading in worship service. The Greek word for pastor is ‘poimen’ which means shepherd.

You can therefore in your own way analyse who a shepherd should be. That is why I say we take care of the people and are supposed to work with the political leaders in fulfilling their obligations under law towards the citizenry. But what do we have today?

The same pastors brag about fathering looters in politics. Many of us gloat of having access to politicians as sons and daughters in the Lord. We are more comfortable they attend our church than make impacts.  You wonder if truly these looters and careless political leaders have pastors.

Do the pastors preach the truth to them at all? Look at the case of pastors fanning the ember of greed and avarice in their so-called sons and daughters that sit under them every Sunday.

All the pastors teach his people is either the keys to success or 100 ways to prosperity. A lot of us don’t teach them about the fear of God, living righteous lives, obedience to God’s word and make them heaven- conscious. But we teach them how to be comfortable on earth.

In such ways we have so much contributed to the vices and moral decadence of our society. Hence we need to ask for forgiveness of Nigerians because we have not taught them the truth for long. We need to apologise and go back to the Bible. If you go round churches on Sundays, check the sermons what are they all about? Money and materialism; gospel of mammon!

Is there anything wrong with prosperity preaching?

Nothing is wrong with prosperity preaching except that it has taken the largest percentage of the messages of our days which is not supposed to be and except it has made everyone think everything ends on earth. Nothing is wrong with it except that it has bred jellyfish Christians so much so that we hardly find soldiers of the cross in the church.

Church workers are earning salaries and no volunteers again. Drummers in the churches wait after the service to get his part of the Sunday proceeds. They are not taught sacrificial service unto God. Not many volunteers go on mission works today because they always hear ‘we are not meant to suffer as children of God’.

Just by our messages, we have created a monster that is fighting the church and nation at large. Many of those that sit under our ministrations every Sunday are crooks in public services. Is it not a shame? Pastors have thrown caution to the wind and you hardly notice any difference between those that go to church, thinking they are serving God and those who do not.

To worsen the situation today, some people have even stopped attending churches because they have nasty experiences that made them vow not to attend again. That is why I always say that Nigeria pastor owes the public apology. Yes I am serious and I think this is another opportunity to apologise on behalf of the church in Nigeria that the people should please take the apology and return to God.

How many pastors do you think will agree with you on this?

I am very sure not too many. I am quite sure several of them will call me names but the truth must be told if indeed we serve God and we have the Spirit of Jesus. Jesus has not taught us all the excesses and anomalies you see in our people today. It is absurd and novel to Christian order, it is not biblical!

I quite understand that many are deep in the perversion of church values. The message of the church is always a strong one. It doesn’t most often make sense or appeal to anyone  unless you have become part of the church but these days those jargons we call word of God are all over the place and it is acceptable more because it appeals to the human flesh.

If we check the messages of the churches in advanced countries of the world, there is no difference with what we have here, yet they are doing well as nations.

Is there nothing the Christian bodies like CAN and PFN can do about this?

We will be deceiving ourselves if we think CAN or PFN can change pastors’ sermons. Though it is one thing for these bodies, which I am fully part of to understand all these things I am talking about and another thing is to help. If indeed they do understand, they can only help the church of Jesus by organizing different programmes for pastors that deal with issues regarding these things.

That is one of those things we do in one of our ministries, Satsa Nations which is an acronym of Saved to Save Nations, training leaders to be Godlike leaders.  But mind you, some will still tell you prosperity is the message God asked them to preach which is an abuse to the gospel as handed over to us by the Apostles. You don’t preach a message to the detriment of the souls

What can you say about those who claim God sent them to preach prosperity?

God has not called anyone to preach poverty either.  The issue we have at hand in our days is a big one that this little time for interview we have will not be enough to analyse them. Our knowledge has increased to extent of departmentalising the Gospel.

Paul says in Acts 20:27 that he did not shy away from declaring the total counsel of God. Is that the same God that sent anyone not to mind the spiritual health of his members but only how they do in monetary and material value? Jesus did not die for us to prosper. Before he came, people have been having money. He died that sinners may come back to God and be prepared for His second coming.

Today’s church hardly preaches about His coming, they shun telling people to prepare for Him. If this has been adequately done, our problem as a nation will be minimal and our polity will be sound.

Imagine those Christians in different government offices. If they had been taught to prepare for the coming of Jesus, they won’t take their jobs with levity and they will not steal public money. They will show what Christianity is about in their business places as against manifesting Christianity by the abundance of so called blessings.

How do you assess the anti-corruption war of the current administration?

So far, I will say it is not business as usual. Even though the government has not been able to do much, it is quite different from the time whereby everyone stole without fear and having no one to question. We will be deceiving ourselves if we agree that no stealing is happening today. The difference is that it is not celebrated like we used to have it and anyone who wants to steal in this dispensation will have to work very hard to keep it secret because the President and his vice by intent will not tolerate it.

When I say by intent, I mean that this government has a very strong mind not to tolerate stealing from public coffers but somehow because our system is not also perfect, you see some loopholes. Yet I credit this government even though there are still areas they still need to attend to especially security of lives.

Should anti-corruption be the only focus whereby other things suffer?

It is not supposed to be the only focus and I don’t want to believe it is the only focus they have.  This government may have not satisfied us one hundred percent but my confidence in God is that this government will be such that Nigeria will come back to appreciate later.

If indeed we know how much corruption has dealt with us, we will thank God for still keeping us as a nation. So corruption is a serious monster threatening us and if permitted to work it out, this government will give us the Nigeria of our pride.

What do you stand for the 2019 elections?

I stand where Nigerians that love this country stand. I stand where Christians like me that love sanity, probity to continue stand. I stand in the purpose of God for now. I stand with PMB/PYO mandate.

Let me say that this administration falls short of my expectation seriously but having understood the complexity of our system, I draw my conclusion that the worst of this administration is the best of others in the past.

  • Apologise for National Assembly invasion, says Okonkwo

The Convener of youth advocacy group ‘Together for Everybody: Working for Everyone’ Mr. Uche Annie-Okonkwo, has demanded an apology from the Department of State Service (DSS), over “the unacceptable invasion” of the National Assembly.

Annie-Okonkwo, who is aspiring to represent Idemili North/ South Federal Constituency of Anambra State on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), described the security operatives’ action as embarrassing.

He said: “There are behaviours that are not just unacceptable, but also pointedly so grievous and completely abhorrent. No worse act can be this abhorrent than the rehearsed anarchy rendered in dark hoods by the DSS upon this often harassed symbol of our democracy. It was an absurd theatre with no sense.”

He commended the Presidency for the prompt acting by sacking the then head of the DSS. “Yes, it was good news that the architect of this script was sacked. I advise and dare to demand that on behalf of Nigerians, an apology from the DSS is not just expedient but a healthy step to take.”

He urged Nigerian youths to work hard and continue the mobilisation to play active role in the 2019 general election.

  • Shehu Sani, Adams: those who annulled June 12 must apologise

A HUMAN rights activist and lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani and National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland Gani Adams have urged those who annulled and betrayed June 12, 1993 presidential election to apologise.

Sani, who spoke yesterday in Ogba, Lagos, at the 25th anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential poll, said it was unfortunate that “these saboteurs did not allow the late Chief MKO Abiola to realise his dream of enabling Nigerians to say farewell to poverty.

“I hail President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, but he should ensure that the senseless killings ongoing in the country are stopped.

“The greatest honour President Buhari can do to the late Chief Abiola is to sustain his ideals by promoting unity and ensuring that Nigerians enjoy the good things of life.

“Traitors of June 12 must not be honoured. Those who worked for the late Gen. Sani Abacha and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida to truncate the June 12, 1993 presidential poll must not be honoured.”

The senator lambasted the people who abandoned Chief Abiola during the struggle and hailed heroes of democracy like the late Gani Fawehinmi, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Prof.  Wole Soyinka, the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and others “for ensuring that Nigerians now enjoy democracy”.

Adams thanked Buhari for “taking this bold initiative of honouring the late Abiola and the late Fawehinmi.”

He said Nigerians would not forget him for putting the country’s democratic history in the right perspective.

Adams added: “All over the world, issues of security, good health, education, enduring social structure and good economy always take the centre stage.

“I implore the Buhari administration to take care of these and other good things of life, which will ameliorate Nigerians’ sufferings.

“The way we clamoured and struggled to make June 12 Democracy Day, we need to make sacrifice, struggle and make a case for restructuring.

“We need to stand firm and raise our voices in support of restructuring. If Nigeria is restructured, the federating units or states will develop at their own pace.

“Our democracy has been so monetised that to some Nigerians, it defies logic. The result is that electoral malpractice has become the order of the day.”

Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council Dr. Qasim Akinreti hailed President Buhari for doing justice at the right time by recognising Chief Abiola and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day.

Personalities who fought for June 12 were given awards at the event.

  • Ortom to Tsav: apologise

    Ortom to Tsav: apologise

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has demanded a retraction and public apology from Abubakar Tsav, as a condition for the withdrawal of the suit  against him by the Attorney-General and Justice Commissioner, Michael Gusa.

Ortom, who addressed reporters after meeting with a delegation from the Public Complaints Commission yesterday, said the criteria was imperative for the amicable resolution of the matter, following the intervention of the delegation.

He said Tsav’s position on his administration, and the petitions against him and other government officials, were based on false information.

Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission Mr. Emmanuel Ogbile said the delegation interacted with Ortom as part of efforts to resolve the differences between Tsav and the Ortom-led government.

He said the meeting was successful and hoped the issues would be resolved amicably.

  • Apologise to Nigerians rather than cast aspersions, Timi Frank tells Anenih

Apologise to Nigerians rather than cast aspersions, Timi Frank tells Anenih

The suspended Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank said yesterday that the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Tony Anenih should apologise to Nigerians for the damage he and other did the Nigerians  rather than casting aspersions on  Nigerians.

Frank said in a statement in Abuja that Chief Anenih should tell Nigerians one good thing he will be remembered for as a politician, adding that he also helped to destroy his own party, the PDP.

Chief Anenih, who served as the Minister of Works and Housing between 1999 and 2002, had said in his book, titled ‘My Life and Nigerian Politics,’ which was presented in Abuja, at weekend, that Atiku became too ambitious during the build-up to the 2003 presidential election in which Obasanjo was seeking a second term.

He said Chief Anenih lied on his 2003 account, adding that more than 22 PDP governors were strongly behind Atiku to contest the Presidency but choose to stepped down for his boss because of his loyalty.

He said it was out of place for Chief Anenih to described the former Vice-president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a ambitious politician “when he himself was more desperate than Atiku who had opportunity to become President in the past but remained loyal to his boss. “

He said: “it is high time Chief Anenih should also tell the world the kind of legacy he is leaving behind in all his years in politics. Baba Anenih’s desperation to remain in the corridor of power made him to force former Goodluck Jonathan to run again in 2015 when he knew he (Jonathan) couldn’t win.

“Chief Tony Anenih has lost the moral right to talk about  former Vice President Atiku Abubarkar or any other Nigerian for that matter seeing that he is one of the reasons Nigeria and especially the Niger Delta region  is where we are today.

“What has Anenih done for the Niger Delta where he comes from? Instead of using his position to help the Niger delta and Nigeria at large to find lasting solutions to its numerous challenges, he choosed to support third term agenda.

“Under his watch as Minister of Works, 300 Billion Naira disappeared into thin air. As NPA chairman, what positive contribution did he make for the benefit of Nigeria? Even in the South-South where Anenih comes from, Atiku a Northerner has touched people’s lives positively in terms of job employment more than Anenih will ever do in his life time. Anenih is not called Mr fixer for no reason, he helped put Nigeria and Nigerians in the fix we find ourselves today.

  • Aggrieved supporters apologise for sealing off party’s secretariat

Aggrieved supporters apologise for sealing off party’s secretariat

Aggrieved members of the Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of Movement Against Imposition (MAI), yesterday apologised to the party’s national leadership for sealing off of the chapter’s secretariat last Tuesday.

The secretariat was sealed off during a protest against the state Chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, in Akure, the state capital.

Besides, the party supporters said they would reposition the party for victory, stressing that the development would not hinder its success in November 26.

Speaking to reporters in Akure on the outcome of their meeting in Abuja, a member of the State Executive Committee (SEC), Mr. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said he voluntarily stepped down as the purported acting chairman of the party. He added that the state Deputy Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, should run the APC affairs in consonance with Article 17, subsection 5, page 70 of the party’s constitution.

He said the state executives submitted the sack letter to the APC National Secretariat, stressing that the alleged act of impunity in Ondo APC has gone.

According to him, 24 aspirants backed the removal of Kekemeke because of alleged anti-party behaviour.

Ogunleye said: “Truth must be told; majority APC stakeholders are not comfortable with Kekemeke’s style of leadership. We have been tolerating him for long. His continuity in office will spell doom on the fortunes of the party.”

A statement in Akure by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya,   said Kekemeke’s removal was in accordance with the spirit and letter of the party’s constitution (Article 21).

But Kekemeke insisted he remains the APC chairman, stressing that his removal was illegal.

According to him, the aggrieved members, who signed his sacked letters, were angry because he had not allowed them to loot the party’s treasury.

  • Apologise Now, IGP Idris

    • By throwing unfounded allegations at his predecessor, IGP Ibrahim Idris has made a reckless start to his tour of duty

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, made a most inauspicious start to his tenure by hauling petty and reckless charges at Solomon Arase, his immediate predecessor.

In a sensational announcement, Mr. Idris claimed Mr. Arase exited the police with 24 vehicles, thus leaving his new office with decrepit vehicles unfit for the high office of IGP. He also alleged that retired deputy inspectors-general (DIGs) often retired with seven to eight vehicles, particularly the ones in their charge at the time of retirement. While decrying such practices, he added that a maximum of four vehicles would have been fair, thus appealing to the officers concerned to return the excess.

This charge, if true, would have been a scandal, particularly under the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency, that has made a decisive war against corruption the cornerstone of its public policy.

But as it turned out, IGP Idris rushed to blab the accusations without confirming his facts, either by poring over his predecessor’s handover note, or by phoning Mr. Arase for clarifications. That was grave and unfortunate, for those allegations cast serious slurs on Mr. Arase’s character; and Mr. Arase, from records, was not among those noted for notoriety in the force.

By this singular action, Mr. Idris tended to present himself as petty, graceless, reckless and vindictive. Those are no traits for the IGP in contemporary Nigeria, when violent crimes and kidnapping are too frequent for comfort; and where the chief cop, to tackle this serious malaise, must maintain a cool head and clear mind, so as not to be tragically misguided, nay distracted, from his onerous duty of securing fellow Nigerians.

A newspaper report had claimed that Mr. Idris’s apparent bellicosity against Mr. Arase was an unanswered query the former IGP gave his successor for an alleged non-clearance for a trip Mr. Idris allegedly made, when he was AIG. As it turned out, that query was reportedly still to be answered when Mr. Idris was announced as new IGP.

The report also claimed that Mr. Idris’s less-than-conventional take-over speech, in which he reportedly did not raise any of Mr. Arase’s achievements as IGP, but instead launched into a threat to probe the finances of some police welfare agencies, was part of Mr. Idris’s grouse with his predecessor.

All these would be unfortunate, if true. To start with, the police could do with more institutional cohesion than an IGP openly bickering with his immediate predecessor, on something as inane as alleged carting away of vehicles. Besides, Mr. Idris should not give the unfortunate impression that his new position is too big for him.

Even if he had any issues with Mr. Arase, that he had somewhat become his successor should give him enough grace to let go; and extend to the former IGP the traditional respect he deserves; and relate with him with the decorum that requires. On this score, it wouldn’t be out of place for the IGP to publicly apologise to his predecessor, since the whole thing has been found to be a hoax.

But something indecorous still crawled out of this unfortunate affair – that DIGs and IGPs often exited with seven or eight cars; yet the police is always pressed for vehicles, operational and otherwise.  If this allegation is true, then everything should be done to stop it forthwith.

Nigeria is in a bind economically. If you don’t have much, the most logical thing is, at least, to preserve the little you have. Even in plenitude, waste – and this is wanton waste, if indeed this allegation is true – is no virtue. That you have excess does not mean you should waste resources. That is why such practices should stop forthwith.

  • NBA asks EFCC to apologise for SAN’s arrest

NBA asks EFCC to apologise for SAN’s arrest

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apologise for arresting a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on a court premises.

At a briefing yesterday, NBA Lagos branch chairman Martins Ogunleye said it is a desecration of the hallowed precincts of a court for a security agency to arrest anyone there.

NBA said from the Victorian ages, the court and the church are considered hallowed, adding that it is an aberration to arrest anyone in such places.

The association condemned the overzealousness exhibited by security agencies, saying they should be called to order.

The EFCC, last Friday arrested Chief Rickey Tarfa (SAN) at the Lagos State High Court, for allegedly obstructing the rearrest of his clients, who were on trial for another case.

NBA said even if Tarfa committed an offence, he should have been treated with more dignity. Besides, the suspects came to court on their own having been on bail, said NBA.

The NBA chairman said the association’s President, Augustine Alegeh (SAN), who came to secure Tarfa’s release, was kept waiting for over seven hours on Saturday and was not allowed to see Tarfa.

The association said Tarfa was not allowed to have a change of clothes until he was released on administrative bail to Alegeh on Sunday.

“While we, as a body of lawyers, support the anti-corruption crusade, we want to urge that crusade itself must be fought within the ambit of the law. To do otherwise will be to invite a situation of anarchy, and will occasion injustice.

“While we do not want to go into the merits of why Mr Tarfa was arrested, we want to note strongly that first, it is an aberration for anybody to be arrested within the premises of a court. And the matter is made even more serious when the person arrested is a lawyer practicing his trader within the premises of the court.

“There are certain places where you do not arrest a man, right from the Victorian times. You don’t arrest a man within the precincts of a court or church. These places are hallowed places, never to be desecrated,” Ogunleye said.

NBA also condemned the treatment meted to Tarfa, saying: “No matter the type of offence a man commits, his treatment even whilst in detention must be humane and not the kind that will debase or derogate from his rights as enshrined under the Constitution, which protects every citizen from inhuman and degrading treatment, including torture.”

Tarfa was arrested by EFCC operatives while allegedly attempting to prevent the re-arrest of his client, Ghanhoue Sourous Nazaire and Zenou Modeste, both of them  Beninoise Nationals, charged with alleged forgery of their company resolution and Form CA7.

EFCC said they allegedly conspired amongst themselves  on May 28, 2007 to forge Rana Prestige’s ordinary resolution which they claimed was signed by Mrs Rachadatou Abdou, who co-owns the company.

The commission said they allegedly forged a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Form 7 dated November 22, 2005, claiming it was also signed by Mrs Abdou.

They were also accused of uttering of forged document by presenting the Form 7 to CAC as genuine.

The charge includes conspiracy to commit a felony, forgery and uttering of false document, which violate section 516, 467 and 468 of the Criminal Code, Cap C17, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren, was not available for comments as his mobile phones were switched off.

  • ‘Oshiomhole should apologise to Igbinedion’

    ‘Oshiomhole should apologise to Igbinedion’

Hon. Victor Enoghama, an associate of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, is a former commissioner in Edo State. In this interview with Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR, he says Governor Adams Oshiomhole should apologise to Igbinedion for making unfounded allegations.

How would you react to the invectives on former Governor Lucky Igbinedion by Governor Adams Oshiomhole ?

I am an in-law to the former governor. The event that took place before the anniversary when we heard the Comrade Governor insulting the Esama of Benin Kingdom and also insulting the former governor was not pleasant to me. I was disturbed that it was coming from a governor that I have worked with for four years. The moral value we had has been lost. If there are political issues that have to be discussed, there are ways to discuss them after all, the people we borrow this democracy from, they have their own political disagreement, but they don’t resort it to a personal attack. From what I saw when the governor used over an hour to lambast the Igbinedions, both father and son, is not a welcome development. If I were with the governor, I probably would have told him that is not the way a governor should behave. If you have any political difference with anybody, you first have a close door meeting. Things you discuss at a close door meeting are personal issues. For him to come out and start insulting someone like Chief Igbinedion, it is not really about my relationship with the Igbinedions or my relationship with the governor. As far as I am concern, it is politically incorrect and morally wrong.

What should the governor do next?

Lucky did not hand over to Oshiomhole, he actually handed over to Oserheimen Osunbor. For 18 months, Osunbor was governor in this state. His did not say he wanted to investigate Lucky who was his predecessor. For Oshiomhole to say after seven years that he wants to investigate Lucky, you will know that there is something fishy and all those things dovetail into the seven years anniversary. It was a build up. For me as someone who has worked in public office, I will say the governor has erred in this regard. If I were to be with the governor in his administration, I would have told him that he erred in telling the Igbinedions that he has stolen money from the state government which is unfounded. He has erred and if he wants peace in the state because as a government his primary purpose is the welfare of the citizens of the state and peace which is more paramount. He can retrace his steps when he as a governor apologies. There is nothing wrong if the governor admits his mistake. As a governor, there are certain people he must manage, regardless of political affiliation. Those people who have attained, in terms of business, those people the Federal Government has recognised. Do you know what it is for somebody to be awarded with a CFR. The Federal Governmenr has found that person worthy of that position. A person who has that kind of title, you don’t just demean that person in the public.

What do you say about comments that Esama enriched himself during the administration of his son?

For Oshiomhole to say that Chief Igbinedion enriched himself during Lucky’s government is laughable. I grew up as a small boy when we hear of the word Exemption. I remember those days when we used to pass artillery on our way to the stadium. We see high rising buildings and they said they belonged to Igbinedion. I used to see him on a white horse. The title Esama means one of the richest man in Benin Kingdom. Singlehandedly, Igbinedion has sponsored his son back in 1991 when he lost  during the NRC and SDP. Lucky coming into power in 1999 was funded by his father. He was the first black man to own 747 jet. Having participated in Lucky’s government in 2007, I can say that Lucky has done his best. He created the foundation for Oshiomhole. In 1999, the day Lucky came to power was the day civil servants called off their strike. Lucky did not lament what he met on ground but he put his effort together and see how he could create a government. Lucky restructure our health system and the educational system. In the civil service, Lucky employed people and get water from Ikpoba Dam. With the little money, Lucky had, he was able to put structures in place. An incoming government was supposed to build on it. If Lucky wanted to eradicate the legacy of Dr. Ogbemudia, he would not have renovated the stadium. He put seats on the stadium. He made the swimming pool to an international standard. He built infrastructure in AAU. Government is continuity. If Edo State want to move forward, we must avoid the idea of killing legacies of predecessors. The legacy I left at the Ministry of Transport was destroyed.

Is it true that Chief Igbinedion solely collected the monthly IGR of N280m for personal use?

That is completely false. Lucky formed the Board of Internal Revenue. Go and ask those who were members of the board how they were collecting the revenue. When Lucky came in, the IGR was about N20m. Lucky built it to about N280m. Does it mean his father was collecting N200m? As we speak, Oshiomhole has paid four percent to Oseni Elamah. If Igbinedion by proxy or influence was a consultant to the Board of Internal Revenue of which he was not, there was no way government would have paid N200m. What are they doing with the 4% they are paying the consultants? These are political gimmicks.

A former Commissioner once said Lucky had passion for work, but was bogged down by his father and Chief Anenih.

That is not true. If Charles Idahosa is saying that, I believe that is a misplace information. When you talk about performances, there is a limit you can perform as a government and that depends on the revenue that accrue to you. There is no father that will not wish his son well. There was no way the father, Esama could distract his son. Those of us close to Chief, we know that Chief met well for this state and this country. He has contributed his own to the development of this country. There was no way he could have distract his son. Lucky was never distracted. He gave his best to the development of this state. He is a quiet man and has never want to join issue with anybody. Idahosa is one of the beneficiary of Lucky. Was he not a Commissioner in his government. When he is now saying the government he was part of and he didn’t resign when things were going wrong and go on to say that somebody was responsible for the failure. Wherever we are now was made possible by Lucky. I have said it in a State Council meeting. The cry of the people during Igbinedion era was not road. How many people have cars then. Because their human development has been attain, that is when you start talking about cars.  The man was building government. He meant well for the state which was why he set up those industries to enable the youths get employed. The fruit factory at Ehor was never sold. It was only Ikpeshi Chemical plant that was sold. Cassavita was working and Fertilizer plant was there. Oshiomhole should have seen that the companies were working and build on it. People would have been working in the factory. No investor want to come to Edo during Lucky because investors were not sure about our democracy. The government took the initiative and after privatize. I am saying these things because of my participation in three administrations.

You were in government when the Land Use Charge was passed into law..

The Land Use Charge first came in 2012 when I was the Commissioner for Transoort. We discussed it at the Council meeting,  I told the Governor that the state was not ripe enough for the Land Use Charge. Then it was called Property Tax. I said we should get the government infrastructure to a level before throwing out the option. For him to say we can get N18bn a month means anti-people. We know in abroad, property tax are paid through mortgage system. As a citizen, you don’t need to have the full amount before building a house. Before talking about Land Use Charge, the infrastructure, water supply, electricity, good roads, good public schools, welfare are they available? The timing was wrong when they brought it on board and I said we must take development  to a certain level before introducing the law. We can’t see that

Lagos State is doing something and we set out to do it. Property Tax is not politically correct as of this moment. Majority of Edo people are against this. You can shove it. You don’t make a law for certain people in the society. You make a law that encompassed the entire society. When they start saying it is met for those in the GRA. Where is the GRA? The GRA ends in Boundary road. I don’t live in GRA, I live in Ugbor village. Are you saying, I will pay when you have already defined GRA. Are you saying GRA at Auchi is included? If you want to take the map of old GRA, it ends in Boundary road. We should have public debate and do marketing before it is launched. The way the law was past showed there was something under it.

But, the government said it was meant to tax the rich and provide facilities for the poor.

How many rich men are in the GRA? Whenever they talk about the rich, they talk about Igbinedion. Some of the houses in the GRA are inheritance. There are so many government properties there. It is the rich men that established the businesses where people work in the state. Look at Igbinedion payroll, he pays over a N100m for salary staff. There is the C of O payment. Igbinedion is up to date on that. Are we going to tax them and give the money to the poor. How will the poor benefit from some of the programmes the government has outlined. That should be the questions to ask. There are various ways the rich can compensate and work for the poor. One way is bringing investment. Chief Igbinedion has brought a lot of investments where people work. The government should encourage the rich to invest. The rich are encouraged by the government to invest.

What about the alleged land grabbing by Chief Igbinedion under his son’s administration?

Without Igbinedion, most people would not have known Okada community. Igbinedion hails from Okada village. A part of those land the governor is referring to is his own inheritance. If you look at the date when some of the land were given to him, you can tell that military governors gave him part. If they say his son gave him the entire land which this government want people to believe is not true. The son didn’t gave his father those lands. Even if the son decide to give land to his father, is it because the son is a governor, the father should be denied something. If the father applied, the issue should be whether it passed through the normal process. I can do what I want to do on any land given to me by the government provided it is farming. If they say Chief Igbinedion has those land and he is letting them to cocoa farmers, how do we justify if Chief Igbinedion said he owns the cocoa farm. Have you seen any protest from Okada people that their land has been collected? Let them show us documents. Chief Igbinedion has documents with which the land was acquired. Some of those properties in the GRA were given to him by government before the son came to power. Igbinedion bought that number one Guest House from a former governor. They are playing politics with everything.

Do you attribute what is happening to next year’s election?

It is 2016 that is playing out now. They came out too early. The Oshiomhole government we started in 2008 was focus. We were focus and playing less politics. That is the reasons we were able to achieve some of the infrastructure we had. Today those infrastructures have collapsed because politics is now the order of the day. This last year is going to be for politics and as a result the people will not enjoy dividends of democracy. There are a lot of issues to compare previous government with this government unlike before when they will say this government didn’t do anything. The cost of doing the bye-pass from Oluku to Sapele road is N10bn. How much does this government spent on five kilometer of roads? When we want to talk about corruption, we have to look into his activities. I am not happy with the language of Oshiomhole calling Jonathan an armed robber. People like to talk about Martin Luther King. I will not want my children to talk like Oshiomhole. There are people to be managed in the society. If you successfully manage those people, it will be well with you. Some people were laughing when insults were poured on a man who for over 60 years has been on top of his game. The governor has right to challenge anybody to a debate but not to cast aspersion on those who said I don’t trust your policy. Some of us were labeled as rebel commissioners because we spoke our mind.

Are you worried about the planned probe of Lucky Igbinedion?

I am not worried about the planned probe. Those who have not sinned should cast the first stone. I just told you it takes N15bn to do a four kilometer road in this state. This issue of going to Abuja to forward files to the Federal Govenment. If there are issues, the man has a right to explain.

Your party has accused Oshiomhole of being corrupt and you have worked closely with Oshiomhole. Can you say the allegation by your party is true?

Corruption is of different forms. When you over blown project cost, that is corruption. When you get kickback on projects awarded, that is corruption. When you deny certain people of their rights, that is corruption. When I was there as a commissioner, there were certain things that happened that didn’t make me happy. That is the truth. It was clear to me that this idea of the messiah was not there. For you to say your predecessor was corrupt and you are not corrupt, that is for Edo people to decide. From the little we can see, we can tell the government is not free of corruption. When there is nepotism, tribalism playing in government, you know that is is not free of corruption. Some of us were moved from certain offices, because he wanted to put his tribesman there. Some people have been sacked from office because of one issue or the other while others are still in office for the same offenses. Is that not corruption. Oshiomhole’s government has lost focus. Politics now take 70 per cent and the real governance take 30 per cent and there is no control. Three years of this second tenure have destroyed the infrastructures we built in four years. Tell me any street light working today. When some of us challenged the traffic light, we were told this is the best. What about the school furniture that were supplied. People did not know what happened why there are no furniture in some schools where we invested N3bn. Compare the way Edo supplied furniture to schools to the way Fayose supplied furniture to schools. Our furniture makers in the state are not benefitting. Somebody did the furniture in Abuja and 50 per cent of the furniture were missing.

You are close to the former Governor. Has he in anyway regretted actions of Charles Idahosa?

Lucky Igbinedion talk less even when you sit with him for hours. He listen a lot. He has said he will not interfere with Oshiomhole government and he will allow him concentrate on governance. Who made Charles Idahosa chairman during military era, it was Lucky. Lucky also made him a commissioner. People believe they can pass any aspersion on him and it will stick because he does not say anything. This time, the man has said enough is enough. It is unfair for Charles, a childhood friend of Lucky to start castigating him from behind. Lucky has contributed to the likes of Charles. You cannot play politics with your friend who has contributed in terms of human capital development to your life.
