  • ’Corps members can’t write application’

The Kano State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Sanusi Abdulrasheed, yesterday said over 89 per cent of corps members can’t write or speak good English.

Abdulrasheed, who regretted that the corps members preferred communicating in Pidgin English, reminded graduates that the era of white collar jobs was over in Nigeria.

The state coordinator spoke yesterday in Kano at the passing-out parade of corps members.

He said the NYSC discovered this after a nationwide research.

“I have been asked to remind you, and I don’t want you to feel insulted, but it is a statement of fact that the management throughout the federation made an observation that the bulk of corps members were not communicating effectively in English language.

“Following the nationwide research by NYSC’s management, it was established that 89 per cent of them cannot write good application.”

According to him, the research indicated that “majority of you start writing application with their name, for example, ‘I, Sanusi Abdulrasheed, hereby…’”

He added: “You should know that the point of communicating to the world is through an application. And when you start on a bad note, those who appreciate the use of language would discover that such a person lacks communication skill and such an application would end up in the dustbin.”

The NYSC coordinator urged the corps members to buy primary and secondary textbooks, if necessary, to learn how to communicate in English. You will learn and study numerous ways of writing a good application.”

However, the coordinator advised them not to waste time searching for white collar jobs.

He said insecurity had reduced in the state.

‘’Let us thank Allah for the way He has been using our government, both the state and the Federal Government in confronting security challenges in Kano. I assure any new corps members not to be afraid in serving in the state. Though only God can guarantee adequate protection of life and property, we have done the little we can.

Abdulrasheed said some corps members would repeat their service year for one offence or the other.

  • Rivers PDP crisis: Court to hear joiner application

Justice George Omereji of the High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, will on July 2 hear the application for joiner filed by five members of the House of Assembly in the suit filed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi against 32 members of the House.

Amaechi sued the 32 lawmakers based on a suspicion that he might be impeached.

However, five members- Evans Bipi (Ogu/Bolo), Kelechi Nwogu(Omuma), Martin Amaewhule(Obio/Akpor 1), victor Ihunwo(Port Harcourt 3), and Micheal Chinda (Obio/Akpor 2)- filed an application expressing their interest to join in the suit on a separate capacity.

They asked the court to grant them leave to file their processes and join formally in the suit.

The lawmakers said they have divergent opinion from the rest of the House in the suit and should be heard.

They were granted leave by the court to serve their processes on the parties.

At the court yesterday, Amaechi through his lawyer, Belolisa Nwaofor (SAN), served his reply.

In another case by the five lawmakers against the leadership of the House before Justice L.L. Nyordee, the court adjourned till July 23 to hear the argument on jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter.

The five lawmakers asked the court to restrain the leadership of the House from carrying out its alleged plot to bar them from the Assembly premises.

They also asked the court to prevail on the respondents to pay them their withheld salaries and allowances and to stop them from refusing to pay them as at when due.

  • Court dismisses Ogboru’s application

A Federal High Court, Lagos, yesterday dismissed an application by a former Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) governorship candidate in Delta State, Great Ogboru, for stay of proceedings in a contempt charge brought against him by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Ogboru had challenged the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the application and all other processes before it.

His lawyer, Prof McCarthy Mbadugha, had said they filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, Lagos, challenging the High Court’s legal right to handle the case.

But Justice Okon Abang dismissed the application and awarded cost against Ogboru.

Mbadugha said they have a similar application before the appellate court, but the judge said that was not before him.

The lawyer urged the court to dismiss AMCON’s application for being incompetent.

AMCON had alleged Ogboru violated the court’s order.

Also cited in the contempt proceedings are Turner Ogboru, Victor Agbenrien, Muibi Sunmonu, Mike Ladesuyi, Roland Ogboru and Raphael Uwhumakpor, all directors in Ogboru’s company, Fiogret Limited.

The contempt allegation arose from an application in which AMCON claimed it had secured a court order, empowering it to appoint a receiver/manager, Kunle Ogunba (SAN) over some of Ogboru’s property.

The property was allegedly used to secure a loan from the defunct Equitorial Trust Bank.

AMCON alleged Ogboru, his officers and some thugs allegedly invaded the premises and removed several truckloads of fish, contrary to an earlier advice by the judge.

Justice Abang adjournedthe matter till June 24.

  • Al-Mustapha: State’s application stalls hearing of appeal

Al-Mustapha: State’s application stalls hearing of appeal

Lagos State Government’s application for an extension of time yesterday stalled the hearing in the appeal by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, as well as Alhaji Lateef Shofolahan, an aide to the late business mogul, Bashorun Moshood Abiola.

Both men are appealing a death sentence passed on them by Justice Mojisola Dada of a Lagos High Court for the murder of the late Abiola’s wife, Alhaja Kudirat.

Counsel to the state government, Femi Adamson, told the Court of Appeal, presided over by Justice Chuma Nweze, that the application was to enable the state government file its respondent’s brief of argument.

He, however, apologised for the late filing, adding that it was caused by some hitches beyond his control.

Although counsel to Al-Mustapha, Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN) and Shofolahan’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, did not object the application, they expressed displeasure over the development.

The court held that the attitude of the Lagos State Government to the hearing of the appeal was not encouraging.

Justice Nweze said: “Gentlemen, as you can see, it is not the fault of the court not to hear the appeal. The counsel should desist from the attitude of filing applications late in any case.”

Granting the application, Justice Nweze ordered the state counsel to serve Ojo the respondent’s brief of argument, having served Daudu.

He adjourned hearing of the appeal till May 30.

  • Ladoja’s appeal: Defective application stalls hearing

The Appeal Court sitting in Lagos, at the weekend, refused to hear an appeal instituted by former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja.

Ladoja is challenging the competence of the corruption charges levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court refused to hear the appeal on the grounds that the application filed by Ladoja’s counsel, Dr. Dapo Olanipekun, was defective.

This is the second time in two weeks that the court refused to hear the appeal.

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, who presided over the case, said the appellant’s reply brief was wrongly titled “Respondent Brief”, instead of “Cross Respondent Brief”.

He said: “You must have a valid process before us. The essence of nomenclature is fundamental and must be complied with.”

Olanipekun sought a short adjournment to enable him amend the application. The case was adjourned till June 20.

Ladoja, in 2010, filed an appeal praying the court to quash the charges against him.

He was arraigned with one of his former aides, Chief Waheed Akanbi, on a 10-count charge of “laundering” N4.7 billion.

Ladoja argued that the EFCC did not have enough evidence to indict him.

  • ‘Weak infrastructure, ICT application, others retard growth’

‘Weak infrastructure, ICT application, others retard growth’

Operators in the insurance industry have identified weak infrastructure and low application of information communication technology (ICT) as some of the challenges that are impeding the growth in the industry.

They argue that unless these challenges are tackled, efforts to deepen insurance penetration and increase its contributions to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) will never make the desired impact.

The Group Managing Director, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, Mr Akin Ogunbiyi, also another problem is the dearth of affordable insurance products for clients.

“If we really want to increase insurance penetration in this country, we have to look at the products and services that the common man can benefit from, to meet his needs, creating value for them and making it affordable,” he said.

Assistant General Manager, Corporate Communication and Brand, Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, Segun Bankole, said the untapped potentials in the Life segment of the insurance industry is very large and a lot of Nigerians are beginning to see the positive benefits of taking up the policy.

He said Sovereign Trust is achieving a record 25 per cent increase in their market penetration every year. He said the SWIS – F POLICY, which his company offers Nigerians, has a lot of benefits. If during the period of insurance, the insured sustains bodily injury solely and independently of any other cause by accidental, violent, external and visible means resulting in death or disablement, the Company pays compensation or in the case of death, to his legal representatives.

  • Tips for flawless makeup application this xmas!

Tips for flawless makeup application this xmas!

    •Apply primer

After you moisturise, spread on a light primer with silica, which has a filling effect. A foundation that is creamy and moisturising will not settle into fine lines and wrinkles, but use it sparingly, the more you add, the more pronounced lines will look.

    •Pick foundation wisely

Choose a liquid foundation with silicone. Avoid luminous or matte ones (they make the skin appear either too moist or too flat to be natural), and instead look for the words “lightweight,” “sheer,” or “invisible.” Some lightweight foundations won’t mask every flaw, for extra coverage, you need more pigment, not a heavier texture. Try M.A.C. Match master Foundation.

    •Find your shade

To find a foundation that matches your complexion, test the colour on your neck. Your skin tone is more uniform there than it is on your face, so you will wind up with a shade that is just right for you. You will also avoid that dreaded demarcation along the jaw line.

    •Apply sparingly

Dab on six dime-size dots of foundation: two on your forehead, one each on the tip and along the sides of your nose, and the last on your chin. Using two fingers spread the colour over your forehead, down your nose, across your cheeks, over your chin, and along the sides of your face. Always blend down or sideways, never up to prevent foundation from catching in peach fuzz.

    •Use your fingers

Blend the liquid toward the perimeter of your face. It will get sheerer as you move closer to your hairline and jaw, preventing any harsh lines.

    •Diffuse with a sponge

Tap a clean, damp makeup sponge around the nose, over wrinkles, and anywhere your base is noticeable to remove excess that could crease or emphasise lines. The Beautyblender’s (sponge) pointed end gets around your nose; its oval base is perfect elsewhere.

    •Hide imperfections

    * With a fine-tipped brush, dab a solid concealer over blemishes or dark spots that are still visible.

*Get rid of redness with a yellow-based foundation and smooth it over any discolouration with your fingers, and then blur the edges with a damp makeup sponge.

*Hide under-eye circles with a creamy formula, tapping it on with your ring finger.

*Powder your nose, cheeks and fore head. Dip a large, fluffy brush in loose translucent powder. Tap off excess and dust powder where you tend to get shiny.
