Event managers seek probe of eviction, looting of Abuja firm

Association of Professional Party Organisers and Event Managers of Nigeria (APPOEMN) has condemned the eviction and looting at Emerald Park, Garki Area 3, Abuja, which affected one of its  members, Alveena Events.

In a statement, APPOEMN said  on August 17, Alveena Events received a notice from Department of Development Control, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Abuja, demanding vacation of its premises within 48 hours.

It said the notice, served without prior warning or legal recourse, led to displacement of a decade-long business operation, while looters invaded the premises, resulting in  loss of assets.

The association urged  FCTA and other authorities to investigate the looting that occurred during and after.

It called on  agencies involved in enforcement to exercise restraint, uphold due process, and prioritise protection of lives, business premises, and assets, adding those responsible must be identified, held accountable, and brought to justice. “APPOEMN stands with Alveena Events and all SMEs facing similar challenges.

‘‘We are committed to pursuing legal avenues to defend rights of our members and ensure justice is served.

We call on stakeholders to work together to create a more supportive, secure, and fair environment for businesses to thrive in Nigeria.

“We condemn the manner in which this eviction was carried out, without due process, and with disregard for rights, safety, and livelihoods of the affected business owners.

SMEs are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, and actions as these not only undermine their security but also erode trust in the institutions meant to protect them.

“One of the fundamental constitutional duties of the government is the protection of life and property. However, the actions at Emerald Park represent a violation of this duty, as we witnessed the destruction of livelihoods and properties instead.

‘‘This disregard for safety and security of citizens and businesses is unacceptable and sends a troubling message to the business community.

‘‘While we recognise that legal infractions must be addressed, we must emphasise that such actions must be carried out in strict adherence to the rule of law, with focus on safeguarding life and property.

The manner in which this eviction and demolition were conducted sets a precedent and has caused hardship to citizens trying to contribute to economic growth,” the statement said.
