  • Observer group launches apps to checkmate rigging

An election observer group, the Election Monitor, has developed mobile and web applications to assist in credible collation of ballot papers at unit, ward and local government levels during the July 14 Ekiti governorship poll.

Speaking at the formal launch of e-Compare Ekiti 2018 Governorship Election Mobile and Web Applications Autocollation System for Political Parties yesterday, the group’s National Coordinator, Biodun Ajijola, said the technology will help in the transparency of the electoral system.

Leaders of political parties present at the event hailed the new technology, which was demonstrated by Ajijola saying it will ensure a credible electoral process.

Ajijola explained the mobile and web applications will strengthen the capacities of political parties during elections and confer greater acceptability on final results released.

He stated the latest technology has a web interface to enable easy display of collated results as well as originally imputed polling unit results.

The election observer stressed that each political party is provided with a user account and password to access the platform, adding that polling unit names are indicated for easy identification by party agents entering results.

Ajijola further stated: “These latest applications clearly show Election Monitor’s consistency in the development of solution specific and need-based technology solutions to address key challenges in Nigeria’s electoral process.

“For the sake of our nation and our unborn generations, it is pertinent every stakeholder especially political parties support INEC to ensure the 2018 Ekiti governorship election is transparent, free, fair, credible and hopefully conclusive on the first ballot.”

    Firm unveils apps for BVN

In its quest to eliminate fictitious address verification during the mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure in banks and other financial institutions, DataPro, Nigeria’s leading compliance Solutions Company has introduced the capturing of the Global Positioning System (GPS) featuring the latitude and longitude of an address.
Speaking to newsmen in Lagos recently, the Executive Director, Operations of the company, Mr. Oladele Adeoye explained that ‘’Since the company pioneered the outsourcing of address verification by banks in 2010, one major challenge has been how to have a fool-proof method of documenting the process.’’
In his words, ‘’with the recent introduction of our mobile application, the company is now able to completely eliminate fictitious address verification by capturing the GPS, photograph and all other physical characteristics of any address in Nigeria on-line and real time.’’
He further said: ‘’The mobile application would eliminate all paper work, guaranty proof-of-work and achieve robust turnaround time.”
By virtue of Section 3 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act (MPLA) 2011 ( As Amended) all financial institutions are mandated to conduct the KYC procedure which involves the identification and verification of the customers demographics of name and address before establishing any business relationship with the customer. This is to ascertain that the customer is who he says he is, and also confirm if he is the Ultimate Beneficial Owner (UBO).
However, according to Mr. Oladele, this process is fraught with a lot of bottle-necks in Nigeria because the country does not have a comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date database of names and addresses of all its citizens.
DataPro with its presence in all the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory is reputed to be one of the biggest compliance solutions companies in the world.

At the launch of the apps and websites at Ojodu LCDA secretariat, Adekoya said he embarked on the exercise to equip the pupils with skills capabile of imbibing in them the quest to be employers of labour.

According to him, the training became imperative given the need to catch the youths early enough, to develop them  to be become self reliant in future  .

He said some of the challenges facing youths could be traced to what he called ‘lack of pragmatic change’ to transform young minds into budding entrepreneurs.

Adekoya, who lost his sight shortly after graduating from Lagos State Polytechnic, noted that he would carry his gospel of entrepreneurship to 57 schools across the state 57 councils before 2018.

“I trained these young minds as part of my contributions to better the society. Nobody or organisation supported me throughout the programme. I deployed my personal resources to achieve this,” he noted.

He urged the beneficiaries to utilise the knowledge acquired to better themselves and the society at large.

One of the beneficiaries of the programme , a 15-year-old SSS 3 of the school, Master Akintola Ebenezer, said  he was  happy for undergoing the training, saying it had impacted much on his life and perceptions towards entepreneurship .

He, alongside his 59 other contemporaries, designed the website in such a way that the platform is accessibile while visitors to the site  can get information on Ojodu  LCDA without much hitches.

“The training and experience is worthwhile for me and I will make good use of the knowledge to improve and develop myself”, he said.

  • Carmudi’s mobile apps take Nigeria by storm

Carmudi’s mobile apps take Nigeria by storm

Firm’s MD talks about the impact of Carmudi’s mobile app during the Social Media Week in Lagos, TONIA ‘DIYAN writes.

Mobile Apps are booming in Nigeria. Studies see an annual increase of over 30 per cent in the use of apps in Nigeria, both for local and global apps. Carmudi.com.ng, Nigeria´s number one car site, recently launched its local mobile app. During the Social Media Week (SMW), Christian Keller, the Managing Director of Carmudi Nigeria exlaind  why the Carmudi app was crucial to the company’s success and how it has changed the way Carmudi is able to connect with its customers – buyers and sellers of cars.

In the second half of 2014, Carmudi Nigeria launched a mobile app. What first started as a side project quickly became its biggest growth driver. “We see extremely strong growth rates on our mobile app usage”, says Keller, during the Social Media Week panel discussion, recently.

To understand why mobile apps play a special role in African countries, Keller pointed out that  “Africa is a Mobile First continent. People immediately adopted phones without making the detour through desktop Personal Computers (PCs) or laptops. That is why mobile is even more important to Africa. Studies have shown that by 2017, 334 million Africans will be connected to the internet via smartphones – the majority of them without having seen the internet on a desktop before.”

Explaining the rational for businesses to create an app, he said,  “Customers on mobile apps are more loyal than website users. They return more often to the service and it is easier to keep in touch with them over notifications – much of which cannot be achieved with a mobile website alone. In the case of Carmudi, he explained  that  the firm’s mission is to make car buying and selling as easy as shopping for daily groceries. “People need to gain access to the entire available market anywhere and anytime to arrive at an informed decision. The Carmudi app allows customers search for the right car on the go or upload a car in less than  two minutes.”

The Carmudi app allows people to find their next car at the convenience of their mobile devices. Just like the website, it features 30,000 verified cars which are available for sale in Nigeria, but makes it more convenient to use. Users can directly call a seller from their phone or upload their cars with the phone´s camera. Interested sellers can send their notifications directly to their app and searches can be saved.

The SMW is one of the events which has branched out from the mobile phone market in Africa, and has become one of Africa’s leading mobile industry events. With various industries present on the mobile market, Carmudi Nigeria, which is Nigeria’s leading online car site, was present at the SMW event to share its story in the African mobile market.

Carmudi, which was founded in 2013 is currently available in 20 countries around the world. The vehicle marketplace offers buyers, sellers and car dealers the ideal platform to find cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles online.
