  • ‘Why Adegoke should succeed Aregbesola’

In this piece, Ayobami Akofe, examines the succession batle in Osun State and why an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant, Kunle Adegoke, should succeed Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The number of aspirants for the candidature of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the September 22 governorship election keeps swelling by the day. But what stands Barrister Rasheed Adekunle Adegoke, K-Rad, out among the pack is that from onset, he, like the incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola, had a working document, “Roadmap to Osun’s prosperity”. Like Aregbesola’s Green Book, which documents the Six Point Integral Action Plan, a roadmap to what Ogbeni has achieved in this almost eight years, K-Rad’s Roadmap To Osun’s Prosperity is also a concise document with which he intends to bring real development to Osun if elected. The document has a 4-Point Agenda which includes Rebuilding the Economy, Ensuring qualitative education, Providing quality health system and Delivering on infrastructural development.

Rasheed seems like someone who is absolutely prepared for leadership, a serious person who came out even before the whistle was blown, as if telling Osun people: “I’m ready; I’m here to serve you”. The Founder and promoter of the renown socio-political movement, Tiwa n Tiwa L’Osun Development Association, is the only aspirant on the platform of the ruling APC whose origin is Osogbo, the state capital. He seems to be challenging the rather primordial and unconstitutional promotion of zonal agenda, which many with less confidence are planning to use to ride on to power, in 2018 Osun.

Meeting with this writer, K-Rad left no one with any doubt about his passion to move Osun from where Ogbeni would have left the State come November 27, 2018 to the next level. He hammered more on a self-reliant Osun, like Lagos, where revenues from the federal allocation will no more be relevant, even if available. What with the ambitious internally generated revenue of N20 billion per month! Quite ambitious, by any standard or yardstick. But is K-Rad not building castles in the air? he was asked. “No” he said, with a very strong air of conviction.

He said: “The unique point that we are selling fundamentally is to rebuild the economy of this state upon the foundation of the current administration. We are not antagonizing what is on ground, but what I am saying is that the economy of Osun, just like that of many other states in Nigeria, needs to be addressed from certain perspectives. The fundamental is that we need to know that nothing really is coming from the federal allocation, because oil will fail and the moment that happens, most states will get nothing from the allocations anymore”.

Specifically, according to him, Osun has the potentiality to generate enough to take care of salaries and allowances of its staff, pay pensioners and even engage in developmental activities. He is of the opinion that agriculture is and should be developed because of the availability of arable lands in all the length and breadth of the state: “We looked at the resources of Osun and asked ourselves what are those resources and potentials which we can tap into to achieve this rather ambitious IGR, because without tapping into real and potential resources, there is no way we can get even one billion naira in one month, not to talk of fifteen billion Naira. I observe that we have more than 315,000 hectares of farmland in the state. They are just bushes everywhere if you travel the length and breadth of the state. And these are arable lands and sadly too that we don’t have mechanized farming to accomplish meaningful yield that could result into good revenue and needs. Osun is suffering for that in loss of potential revenue.

“For the type of arable land we have here in Osun, we will start agricultural revolution within the first few months of our government. Every federal constituency will have very big farm settlement. It is very possible because lands belong to the Governor in trust for the people of the state. That’s the position of the Land Use Act, Section one. We will not force the families that claim ownership of the land to relinquish them, rather, we will partner with them for mutual benefits. We will use part of the land for monocropping on crops like maize that doesn’t take much time to yield for harvest. A particular poultry farm in this state imports trailer loads of maize to feed its birds. You can imagine how much we will make if we become their supplier. Same goes for all other poultry farmers in the whole of Osun.

Same goes for cassava. We have more than enough starch to send to China and other countries to yield foreign exchange for Nigeria. Same goes for other products. We even have tobacco belts in Oke Ila for good harvests which can also bring good cash to the state. We have done soil samples funded by us to determine which crops can grow better and where. We will engage in massive food crops and ensure there are no wastages, and converted to cash by exploring the Lagos market. Lagos alone spends roughly two billion Naira on food daily and we are sure to take the lead in exploring the market. The population of Lagos is 22 million. I am ok to target only 15 million of that population. Assuming that on the average, one person spends just N200 on food daily, which is grossly impossible, that amounts to N3B per day. You can imagine how much that will be in one month.

“On tourism, Ayekunnugba is a tourist destination. The area is a mountain strip casted by nature which does not have an equal all over the world. The mountain exists underground, and you can only see the top as if it is a mere surface. It will take 260 stair steps to ascend or descend the mountain. When you get there you will discover that it is very impressive with water gushing out as a normal water-fall. It is said that two Anaconda snakes live in the cave and do not harm anyone. The amazing thing about the water is that when there’s noise, the rushing of the water increases and also decreases as the noise decreases. These are wonders which should attract tourists. We will like to explore the scientific basis for this occurrence.

“Osun has about 63 tourist destinations as we speak, which include ancient sites like palaces, grooves etc, and by today, most of these sites ought to have been turned to huge tourists destinations. We can put developments such as electricity and water around the groove and build hotels which tourists will lodge in. The fall will power the electricity. Cable car services will be provided since there will be constant electricity. This will attract more and more tourists. To get patronage for these tourist centers will not be problem. In Osun alone, we have 28 higher institutions, not to talk of neighboring states and far states institutions. OAU alone has 19,000 students.

  • Ex-minister Adamu Ciroma dies at 84

Former  Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Adamu Ciroma is dead.

The Minister of Finace (1999-2003) during the first term of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidency, according to family sources, died in a Turkish hospital in Abuja yesterday after a protracted illness. He was 84.

The late Ciroma, also a minister under President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic, was a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In 1979, Ciroma was one of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) presidential aspirants.

He came third in the primary, behind Shehu Shagari and Maitama Sule.

Ciroma was briefly the secretary of the NPN before serving at various times as Minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance.

Ciroma was born on November 20, 1934 in Potiskum, Yobe State. He graduated from the University of Ibadan and served in different capacities in the Public Service.  He was appointed to the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1970 where he served as a Director before his appointment as the Governor in 1975.

His remains were buried in Abuja yesterday.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Governors, All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Aiwaju Bola Tinubu, among others reacted to Ciroma’s passing.

In a statement by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President extended sincere condolences to the Ciroma family, the government and people of Yobe State on the passing of the elder statesman.

The President described Ciroma as a political leader and Federal cabinet minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance, at various points in his remarkable life, will be long remembered for his remarkable service and dedication to the country’s unity, progress and stability.

President Buhari also affirmed that he will be honoured for his contributions in promoting democracy in Nigeria and his legacies should be a constant reminder to politicians who wish to work for the good of their communities and our great country.

Senate President Bukola Saraki described the late politician’s death as monumental loss to the country.

In a statement, Saraki said: “Although death is painful, but it gladdens my heart that late Ciroma lived a worthy and successful life,” Saraki said.

“As a public servant, the late Ciroma’s integrity was unparalleled, as a politician, he was unblemished and as a journalist, he was among the finest breed.”

“Indeed there is no word or adjective that will be enough to describe late Ciroma, considering his invaluable contributions to the development of the country.

“We have lost a detribalised Nigerian, bridge builder and a strong pillar for nation’s unity. He will surely be remembered for his forthrightness and integrity. We shall miss him greatly”.

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara expressed sadness over the demise of an “icon of transparency and an epitome of integrity who lived an incorruptible life.

“Indeed we lost a great man, a patriot, leader par excellence and  a shining star.  Malam Adamu Ciroma was one of the few surviving close associates of the late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello and he remained a consistent advocate for the struggle to see Nigeria achieve the dreams of her founding fathers”.

“He was an intellectual genius and highly cosmopolitan public servant who exhibited high sense of patriotism, passion and enthusiasm for the progress and development of the country while serving as first indigenous Editor and Managing Director of New Nigerian Newspaper, CBN Governor and Minister of various portfolios in different administrations in Nigeria.”

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele described Ciroma as a very good man who was still of immense service to the apex bank. He said Ciroma was a firm believer in the sanctity and independence of the CBN.

“While we mourn the loss of a very good man, an astute central banker and a patriot, we also celebrate his remarkable life and contribution to the banking industry in Nigeria,” the CBN said.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said the country has lost one of its finenest elder statesman, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life.

“The late Mallam Ciroma was a quintessential civil servant and politician who served Nigeria in various capacities in the first and second republics as well as the military regimes and the fourth republic.

“The late elder statesman was a man of great intellect vision and politician who was a strong pillar that continues to support the unity and stability of Nigeria.

“The late elder statesman would be remembered for his political doggedness, commitment to national unity and selfless service to his father land. Nigeria has lost one of its finenest elder statesman, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life. He needs no thumb stone to remind us of his legacies. Yet the best remembrance is for those he has left behind to live up what he stood for.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki said: “I am saddened by the loss of elder statesman, Adamu Ciroma, whose passing was announced today at an Abuja hospital.

“Ciroma was a respected leader, who rose to serve Nigeria meritoriously when the occasion demanded. This can be gleaned from the number of public service offices he held and the panache with which he dispensed his roles.

“I hereby extend my condolences to the government and people of Yobe State, his hometown, Potiskum, and his immediate family. I pray that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said.

Obaseki noted that “Ciroma’s role as one of the architects of modern Nigeria cannot be controverted,” calling on youths to emulate his commitment to the Nigerian project.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola described Cirom as principled, recalling his famlus statement in the heat of the June 12, 1993 election annulment crisis, that Ciroma said the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the election “fatr and square.”

In a statement by his Media Adviser Sola Fasure, Aregbesola said: “The death of Mallam Adams Ciroma came to me with a rude shock.

“This was a highly respectable and influential politician and a reputable voice from the North.  He had been around since after the independence, taking part in major decisions that had shaped the country both in trying moment and in peace.

“He had witnessed Nigeria’s political development from the First Republic to the present democracy and participated in all, which made him one of the most highly experienced and informed politicians living in the country until his exit on Thursday. History will be kind to him”, adding:

“There is no denying the fact that the nation will in some days and years to come miss the experience and interventionist roles of this man of immense wisdom and political knowledge.”

Former Anambnra State Governor Peter Obi, described Ciroma as an elder statesman “that served the country creditably as the Governor of the Central bank and the Minister of Finance. While urging  the younger ones to emulate his spirit of service, he prayed for the repose of his soul.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said his world view was largely influenced by early contacts and mentorship that he received from the late Ciroma.

He said: “A lot of what I have turned out to be in life today was as a result of the early contacts and mentorship that I had with Adamu Ciroma, who graciously offered me vacation job in my formative years”, Atiku said.

Atiku said Ciroma’s honesty and patriotism were among his greatest virtues, adding that the deceased had left behind untainted public service record for which he would always be remembered.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed grief over the passing of the former Finance Minister and a chieftain of the party.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said the country has lost one of its finest; an incontrovertible patriot who spent his life making inestimable sacrifices for the unity and development of our dear country.

The PDP said, “Mallam Ciroma lived as a committed citizen; an astute administrator and highly disciplined politician, who  discharged all responsibilities vested in him with unequaled forthrightness and loyalty to the nation.

“On the political sphere, this great Nigerian will be remembered for his roles in ensuring the stability and growth of our nation, and particularly, the roles he played in the formation and growth of the PDP. He played a leading role in Group of 34 eminent Nigerians, otherwise called the G34, that formed the PDP.

“He was an embodiment of the ideals and visions of our great party in our pursuit of a prosperous nation where unity, equality and justice prevail.

  • Aregbesola lays foundation of N2.7b Osun shopping mall

•Project to be completed before November

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has laid the cornerstone a N2.7 billion shopping complex (Osun Mall) to complement the modernisation of Osogbo, the state capital.

At the ceremony yesterday, the governor said the shopping mall, which occupies a 5,000 square metres of land, is a private venture of Independent Shopping Mall Limited.

He said the mall will provide ultramodern retail, entertainment, relaxation and dining facilities with 2,000 square metres of shopping space, including retail shops, food court and three cinemas.

Aregbesola said the facility will also have automated parking space for 500 vehicles, among others.

On the infrastructural intervention of his administration, particularly in Osogbo, the state capital, Aregbesola said no other government could compete with his administration’s achievements.

The governor said his administration had given the state, particularly Osogbo, a befitting facelift of socio-economic development, which could not be matched by any government since the creation of the state.

He said: “There will be all-round power system for the complex.? When completed, it will complement the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, which is just nearby, to provide recreation for the people of Osun.

“Our people will not need to travel to Ibadan or Lagos to enjoy such facilities anymore.

“So, this Osun Shopping Mall will be the father of all the projects we have completed in Osogbo. I am immensely grateful to God for the cornerstone-laying ceremony we are gathered here to perform today.

“It is our fervent hope that this complex will be ready in November. It will be one of our iconic legacies, even as our administration winds down gloriously in the state.”

The project developer, Gboyega Adeeyo, assured the governor that the project would be completed before the expiration of the tenure of the present administration.

He said the project will enhance socio-economic activities and attract investors to the state.

Adeeyo hailed the Aregbesola administration for its massive infrastructural intervention, saying Osun had implemented infrastructural projects that would be hard to surpass by any other government.

He added that his company would ensure full participation of Osun residents throughout the construction of the project, as mandated by the governor.

According to him, the Osun Mall has been long in coming and Aregbesola encouraged the company not to give up since the idea was conceptualised.

  • Aregbesola preaches religious tolerance

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged Nigerians to live together in harmony and promote peace and unity, irrespective of their faith.

The governor spoke in Osogbo, the state capital, when executive members of the Association of Christian Journalists of Nigeria (ACJ) visited him.

He said religion is personal and nobody should try to fight for God.

Aregbesola admonished Christians and Muslims to pursue common good, rather than the killings being witnessed in some parts of the country in the name of God.

The Chairman of ACJ’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Prince Adeola Adeboye, hailed the governor for the transformation of the state.

He said the association was impressed by the governor’s performance in infrastructure, agriculture, education, youth empowerment and security.

  • Aregbesola: civil service must re-engineer itself

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged the nation’s civil servants to be diligent, efficient, productive and steadfast in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

The governor noted that for Nigeria to reclaim its rightful position in the comity of nations, there is need for overhauling the nation’s civil service.

He said as government’s engine room, the civil service must re-engineer itself, reinvigorate its performance and take the lead in repositioning Nigeria by ensuring a humane, civilised, people-oriented society.

Aregbesola spoke at Atlantis Civic Centre in Osogbo, the state capital, at the official presentation and launching of a book, titled: The Civil Service As A Cornerstone of Development in the State of Osun: The First 25 Years, written by the state’s Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries.

The governor harped on productivity in all strata of life, particularly in the civil service, as the path to national growth and development.

He regretted that Nigeria was stagnant due to its unproductive people.

Aregbesola said: “Our productivity as a people is the lowest in everything in the world, and we are not concerned about this critical challenge that has placed us far behind in the scheme of things in the world.

“It is disheartening that we have forgotten the fundamental basis of our existence, which is to render services that will bring about the required results through productivity.

“Since the civil service is the engine room that determines the success of government, no civil servant must be found wanting at championing productivity and efficiency to justify whatever he or she earns as income.

“So, it is time for us to champion things that will enhance our level of production in all sectors of the economy and declare to the world that we are not destined to be poor and wretched.

“Henceforth, no civil servant must be at peace if he or she sees refuse on the roadside; no civil servant must also be at peace when things are not in order in his or her domain.”

The guest lecturer, Prof Ladipo Adamolekun, called for a vibrant, virile, effective, efficient and productive civic service.

Adamelekun, who described the civil service as a critical integral organ of government, said the growing of a country can only be realised with the building of a first-class civil service.

He said: “We have to build, rebuild, transform and make our civil service progress as a world-class institution. This could only be realised through our collective consciousness to show the need for it.

“The civil service must be strong to continue to build on the fundamental objectives of government for all-round growth and development. This can be easily actualised through training and retraining, introduction of technology that will enhance capacity building and raise the level of manpower in the system as being done in Osun through the introduction of E-learning computer tablet of knowledge, popularly called Opon Imo.”

  • Aregbesola hails mortgage bank

Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has hailed the managerial prowess of the board and management  of Omoluabi Mortgage Bank Plc as it recorded astronomical growth across all lines in the 2017 financial year.

The governor described the performance of the bank in the year under review as heroic, noting that the bank has made tremendous progress resulting in the payment of dividends to shareholders for the first time.

The governor gave this commendation when the Chairman of the bank, Alhaji Adebayo Jimoh, led the board and management team on a courtesy visit to the Government House in Osogbo recently.

Omoluabi Mortgage Bank posted an impressive balance sheet for Q1 2018 bouncing from a loss position in 2015 to record N187 million in profit before tax for 2017, thereby declaring dividend for the first time in its history for the year end 2017. The bank also has its total revenue grew by 170% from N305 million in 2016 to N518 million in 2017.

Similarly, the bank’s portfolio grew by 110% to N1.3 billion when compared to year 2015, even as the non-performing loans went down to 11% in Q1 2018 from 69% in 2015. This is very low compared to industry average of over 30%.

  • Aregbesola: electorate will decide my successor

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has debunked reports in some quarters that he is planning to impose his successor in the build-up to the September 22 governorship election.

He told a group of social media influencers yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, that in a situation where a large number of people decides who rules them, it is impossible for him to place a candidate above the others.

The governor noted that political power lies in the sovereignty of the people, adding that the people should wait for the primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to know who will lead the state after him.

Aregbesola added: “There is no such thing as imposition in the coming elections. On my successor, democracy is about the people. It is not about the individual; it is all about what the people want. I rest my case.

“I have a succession plan and I will work hard at it within the limits for what God allows. I am passionate about a worthy successor. Imposition is like influencing all that someone does in life.

“When I supported with my total strength Senator Mudashiru Husain in the last Osun West senatorial election, our party lost the election as the people wanted otherwise. So, forget about imposition. We are conducting the primary and whoever wins will be backed by all.”

The governor also debunked speculations that he would return to Lagos for a senatorial contest, saying he would remain in Osun State to increase his political clout.

Aregbesola said: “I’m negotiating for a piece of land to build my house in Osogbo. I’m going to be the ‘guru’ here. As to pursuing a senatorial ambition in Lagos, don’t think about it.

“My wife has been complaining that I have been spending too much time with governance. What I know now is that when I leave office, I want to return to my wife.”

  • ‘Aregbesola has given businesses atmosphere to thrive’

An Osun State industrialist and Chief Executive Officer of Yinka Oba Foams Nigeria Limited, Dr Eunice Olayinka Obaleye, has hailed the Rauf Aregbesola administration in the state for providing businesses the conducive atmosphere to thrive.

The octogenarian businesswoman praised the governor for the tremendous achievements he recorded in the last seven and a half years.

She described the feat as unprecedented in the history of the state.

Dr Obaleye spoke at her home in Ijesa while hosting Aregbesola and his entourage during their visit on her 80th birthday.

The industrialist gave Aregbesola a pass mark in all sectors, saying his administration had lifted Osun State from the shackles of retrogression.

She noted that Osun State had set the pace for her counterparts in human, capital and infrastructural developments.

Applauding Aregbesola for building an enabling business environment for investors to thrive in the state, Dr Obaleye acknowledged that his administration put in place business-friendly policies.

The industrialist said the current administration opened windows of opportunities for all to survive with the implementation of its pro-masses policies, actions and programmes.

She said: “As for me, our governor has trailed the blaze and set the pace for others to follow, considering the positive impact the government has made in the lives of the citizenry.

“The state has provided the citizens, particularly businessmen and women, the conducive atmosphere to succeed, a feat that no one else achieved since the creation of the state.

“We have never had it so good like this before. Many have governed the state since its creation; as a matter of fact, none of them did the average of what God has used Governor Aregbesola to do.

“There is no doubting the fact that Governor Aregbesola has taken our collective dreams as citizens to fruition. He has refined and redefined our history for better as we can see in all his good works across sectors.”

Aregbesola hailed Dr Obaleye for contributing to the state’s economy through her huge investment.

He said: “We are here to celebrate with the family of Mrs Obaleye for her enormous contribution to socio-economic and commercial activities in the state, which has brought about massive employment opportunities for the teeming Osun indigenes.

“The celebrator has demonstrated a high sense of commitment to the economic renaissance in the state, hence the need for personal visit with which we have honoured her today.

“There is no doubting the fact that a woman of substance, epitomised by Dr. Obaleye, is rare because not everyone who is rich knows that he or she needs to invest in his or her state, as being done by the celebrator.”

  • Ambode, Akeredolu, Aregbesola, Ganduje, others preach peace, tolerance at Sallah

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State yesterday charged Muslims across the state to keep up acts of charity with a view to fostering mutual understanding and unity in the country.

Ambode spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tunji Bello, at an Eid-el-Fitr celebration held at Evan Square, Ebute Metta, Lagos.

    Akeredolu hails Muslim faithful

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State rejoiced with Muslims across the country on the successful celebration of this year’s Ramadan.

Akeredolu said yesterday that the successful celebration of this year’s Sallah is a proof that Islam is a religion of peace.

He urged the Muslim faithful to continue to sustain the lessons learnt during the Ramadan by contributing to the selfless service of humanity and offering assistance to the less-privileged.

Akeredolu expressed optimism that Nigerians, irrespective of their religious, ethnic or political belief, will continue to promote unity, love, oneness and peaceful co-existence, which Islam as a way of life is promoting.

The governor, however, urged Muslims across the country to imbibe all the lessons learnt from the one-month Ramadan.

Aregbesola tasks Nigerians on disciplined, focused life

The Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, urged Nigerians to re-dedicate themselves by living disciplined, focused and pious life that will translate to prosperity for the country and her people.

He called on Nigerians to work in unity, love, peace and harmony and form a formidable force that will help to stimulate the commonwealth of the nation for the benefit of all.

Aregbesola made the statement while addressing the Muslim faithful during the 2018 Eid-el-Fitri prayers at Osogbo ýCentral Eid Praying Ground.

He named productivity as the panacea to nation’s challenges, saying Nigerians must begin to champion hard work in the quest to reposition Nigeria on the path of greatness.

Governor said the time has come for Nigerians to keep hope alive and engage in things that will enhance productivity.

Aregbesola admonished Nigerians to jettison any act capable of promoting and aggravating resentment, anger and bitters in the course of their national daily lives.

The Governor implored those at the helm of affairs to justify the essence of their positions by being sensitive to the needs of the electorate in the implementation of their policies and programmes.

He called on Nigerian leaders to see leadership as service to humanity and not to amass undue gratification, adding that the interest of the people must be at heart of every leader for the nation to be great again.

While speaking on the significance of Ramadan and Eid-el-fitri, Governor Aregbesola admonished Muslim Ummah to maintain the virtues they have inculcated during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

He charged Muslims on love, peace, patience and perseverance, saying it has become incumbent on every Muslim to love others as he or she loves himself or herself.

     Bayelsa charges Nigerians on perseverance

In a statement signed by the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the state government congratulated the Muslim faithful in the state and across the country on the successful completion of the Ramadan.

The statement enjoined Muslims to live in peace with one another irrespective of their differences. He said as they celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, they should uphold the vital lessons of love, peace and perseverance which the holy month teaches. He also called for more prayers for Nigeria.

It urged Muslims to pray for the nation’s leaders to remain focused in the discharge of their duties for the overall interest of Nigerians.

The Commissioner stressed the need for religious tolerance which he noted would engender peaceful co-existence, unity and a prosperous Nigeria even as the 2019 general elections draw near.

     Amosun preaches religious tolerance

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State yesterday advised residents of the state to continue to live peacefully with one another to sustain the pace of progress and development recorded in the last six years.

Amosun said the state is one, regardless of differences in people’s faith, saying everybody should live in love, harmony and unity with one another.

The Governor made the appeal in his Sallah message shortly after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayer with Muslims in Abeokuta.

He charged Muslims to practice the good virtues they have acquired during the Ramadan and not go back to the vices they jettisoned.

He said: “It is all about Ogun State. Whether Muslims or Christians, we are one and the same. There is no difference.

“As we celebrate the Sallah to today, we shall celebrate more in good health.

“All the things we did not do during the Ramadan, we should not go back to them. We should not go back to life of vices because Allah is against it.

“We should tolerate one another, share in love with one another and continue to live the good attitude we have imbibed during this period.”

  • ‘Aregbesola didn’t spend N4.6b on trailer parks’

The Osun State government has debunked claims that Governor Rauf Aregbesola spent N4.6 billion on four trailer parks across the state.

A statement yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Adelani Baderinwa, said: “It has come to the attention of the State Government of Osun, the false and unfounded accusation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the noble person of Governor Rauf Aregbesola on the planned construction of four trailer parks in some parts of the state.

“The PDP, in its usual arbitrary manner, falsely claimed that Governor Aregbesola awarded a N4.6 billion contract for trailer parks, which was not executed.

“To set the record straight, the state government wishes to state that no kobo of the state was spent on the proposed trailer parks; the government had no financial commitment to the execution of the contract, and it had been terminated for a very long time.

“The contract was awarded on concession to Safeway Track Solution Limited in 2011, following the proposal it presented to the state government.

“The concession agreement was signed on November 30, 2012. The concession agreement was that the company was going to be fully responsible for the project financing; therefore, the government had no financial commitment to the project. And all necessary facilities were to be provided by the company in each of the parks that were to be built in Osogbo-Ikirun road, Osogbo-Iwo Road, Osogbo-Ilesa Road and Osogbo-Akoda Road.”

“According to the concession agreement, the concessionaire (Safeway Track Solution Limited) would build, operate and transfer the facilities to the state government after 25 years. Before the transfer, the state government was to have 30 per cent of the total profit earned while the concessionaire was to have 70 per cent.

“The only commitment of the state government to the planned park was the provision of land, which was provided to the Safeway Track Solution Limited by the Ministry of Works. The total cost of the contract was N4.6 billion, including the value of the provided land, which was N320 million.

“It is on record that the contractor worked for some time before challenges set in, which prevented further work on the project sites.

“Based on the inability or the failure of the concessionaire, the government terminated the contract. That is the fact of the contract.

“The PDP has been known for mischief, frivolous allegation and deceit. The party has failed in its deliberate attempt to misconstrue the concession agreement of the planned trailer parks. The PDP knows the fact but went ahead to tell cheap lies. It amounts to irresponsibility and outright absence of conscience for the PDP to misinform the public. This is not how to do opposition; it is simply a dubious character.

“The Rauf Aregbesola administration has been transparent and prudent in award of contracts and governance issues. The governor has been able to manage the meagre resources of the state for unprecedented and surprising development of the state. It is worthy of note that Osun did not witness any meaningful development when the PDP government, which got huge amounts of money, was managing the affairs of the state. We urge the PDP to stop this campaign of calumny and fruitless effort to smear Aregbesola’s good image.

“No matter how devilish they become, the people of Osun have chosen to continue supporting the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Aregbesola’s administration. The PDP should for once live a truthful life.”
