    Aregbesola inaugurates N94m elementary school

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday inaugurated a N94 million school, the St. Augustine’s Government Elementary School at Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area.

The school has modern facilities, such as a   quadrangular block of 12 rooms, 10 of which are classrooms, a computer centre and a library.

The new school also has a Headmaster’s Office, a store, a power house, a conference room, a borehole, a power transformer, a recreation and sporting centre.

Addressing the crowd during the inauguration, Aregbesola said the school was designed to attract the best brains from their catchment areas, especially intakes from public middle schools.

The governor added that Osun elementary schools are neighbourhood schools where children out of infancy will have schools at their walking distance within the view of familiar neighbours.

He said: “Today marks another epoch in New Dawn of Education Infrastructure in the State of Osun. The last time we gathered for this purpose was on Tuesday, October 24, when we commissioned Ilesa Government High School at Ilesa.

“In the order of our new elementary schools, the most recent was the commissioning of the AUD Government Elementary School at Sabo in Osogbo, on November 29, 2016.

“On March 21, this year, our trains moved around simultaneously to celebrate the official opening and commencement of learning activities at four newly-built government high schools, namely: Ataoja Government High School, Osogbo; Osogbo Government High School, Osogbo; Wole Soyinka Government High School, Ejigbo and Adventist Government High School, Ede.

  • Why I want to succeed Aregbesola, by don

Why I want to succeed Aregbesola, by don

Prof. Adeolu Durotoye, the Provost of College of the Social and Management Science, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State. He spoke on his ambition and agenda for the State of Living Spring. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA met him.

    Who is Professor Adeolu Durotoye?

Adeolu Durotoye is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations and is presently the Provost of College of Social and Management Sciences, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). He is also the Chairman of Quality Assurance for ABUAD. I studied Political Science at the University of Lagos where I graduated with a 2nd Class Upper in 1990. I got my Master’s degree from the same university in 1992. I was a German scholar, having studied at the University of Leipzig between 1997 and 2001 where I got my PhD, graduating with Magna Cum Laude. I worked as a journalist with the Guardian newspaper and African Concord magazine. I equally taught politics at different times at the University of Ibadan, University of Toronto and Afe Babalola University. I am a recipient of the prestigious University of Lagos Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005 and Meritorious Service Award of Men’s Missionary Union of Osun Baptist Conference in 2017. I am also a recipient of Utility Teacher Award of Afe Babalola University in 2017. I had the privilege of serving as Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the 2017 edition of Afe Babalola Agricultural Expo as well as Chairman, ABUAD Convocation Committee in quick succession.

Where are you from? I mean your hometown, local government areas and senatorial district in Osun State?

I am from Osogbo in Osogbo Local Government Area, but I was born in Ede, in Aanu Olu Hospital some 48 years ago. I am from Osogbo, precisely from Ile Amugba, Ibokun Road, Osogbo in Osun Central Senatorial District.

Why are you running for the office of governor of Osun State?

I didn’t initially want to run for governor of Osun State. I run a Foundation with my wife called Adeolu and Jane Durotoye Foundation through which we give scholarships to indigent students, providing vocational training for people. We have been providing small business grants to people who are into small businesses, providing eye glasses. We have been doing all these and I thought that we are serving humanity already. But then, when people kept saying look, see the condition of our state, we believe you can help us based on your exposure, based on your experience, industry, hard work and contacts. They say to me that we believe you can bring all that one to bear; I have assessed the situation and I believe there was need to heed their call. Besides that, I have taken time to seek the face of God and God asked me to go ahead so that I will be able to run the state and take it to a better level. We shall bring industry back to Osun, motivate our teachers and the entire workforce to excel, engage our youth productively, rid our roads of potholes, create jobs in every local government area and our farmers will witness a new dawn.

What experience qualifies you for the job?

I have had the privilege of being part of the think-tank of many presidential candidates. I was part of Choice ’92 when Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi was running; I was part of the think-tank of Hope ’93, MKO Abiola Presidential Campaign. If we keep doing the same thing the same way, we will keep getting the same result.

People now know that if you cast your vote for the highest bidder, you have put yourself into the life of penury and poor performance for another four years. I believe that, if we fold our arms because of the cost, someone says what it takes evil to thrive is for good men to keep quiet, I believe those who are well-meaning should come out to know that we must contribute to the resuscitation of our nation.

When we see that things are not going the way we expect, we must all contribute our quota.

What are those things you plan to do to transform Osun?

When I was a student in University of Lagos in the 80s, anytime we came home during holidays, we had holiday jobs at Nigeria Machine Tools Limited (Osogbo), Osogbo Steel Rolling Mills, Obelawo Plastic Industries, Niyi Ibikunle Carpets, Cocoa Industries in Ede, but where are those industries today? And you can’t create jobs without putting industries in place and we are putting industries back into every local government area of Osun. We want to establish industries that can employ at least 5,000 people and we have 30 local government areas in Osun plus one area office, that will give us nothing less than 155,000 jobs in the first couple of months of our administration. We are bringing industries back. We are going to look for alternative source of energy s that these industries can generate energy on their own to run their own business. We are going to give them the technical know-how on how to generate their own energy because how do you run industries where there is no electricity. I was somewhere in Canada, I visited an industry that was generating electricity from cattle dung.

Why can’t we do that? We have wind-aided energy. I was in Germany a few weeks ago and they were begging people to put on their light because they were generating energy through wind they cannot consume. So, they had to tell their people that, even if you used energy, you will not pay for using it during that period, but in Nigeria, we used the same method of generating energy and here, electricity is a problem. Lack of electricity and infrastructure are some of the reasons why the ease of doing business is not favourable to us. We must create an enabling environment; investment will come in when we provide an enabling environment and as governor, I will create an enabling environment in terms of infrastructure, in terms of electricity, in terms of security. So, investors will come, each local government area will have a industry that is built around the area in which it has comparative advantage so that each local government area will be able to generate jobs for its people. Equally, let us look at agriculture; I am a farmer. When you plant perishable things and if you can’t sell in one week, it is gone because there are no storage facilities. In each local government area, we will create processing facilities in which people will preserve their products, facilities that can turn tomato to tomato paste, pepper to paste, turn orange to orange juice, turn banana to banana juice, turn mango to mango juice so that farmers will not lose their produce having worked so hard.

Equally, we will provide train services to assist our farmers to market whatever they cannot sell locally to sell in places like Lagos and other parts of the country where they can sell some of their products. In the area of education, unfortunately, Osun’s performance in WAEC, 29 out of 36 is unacceptable. I am an educationist and in that area, we must be able to ensure that we turn around the sector.

    What about teachers?

What about the students? If teachers are not motivated, schools will not be schools; we will motivate our teachers, we will train them and ensure that they are paid on time and exposed to international standards if doing things. We will have unified exams, our students will prepare for WAEC from SS2; we will know where they are lacking so that we prepare them to perform well in WAEC and other public examinations. Salaries will be paid on time, workers will be motivated, they will be promoted when they are due for promotion.

Those whose employment have not been regularised, we will regularise it. What about pensioners? I was trained by pensioners; my father retired in 1984 and I was not even in the university when he retired.

My elder siblings were in higher institutions, but if pensioners were not paid as and when due at that time, how would I be able to go to school? Pensions will be paid on time and workers’ welfare are given priority. Our workers deserve more than what they are getting at present. Equally, we will encourage small businesses’ in the western world, small businesses make those environments thick. We will encourage small businesses to thrive.

How do you hope to generate revenue to depend less on allocations from the Federation Account to run the state and still meet the needs of the people?

Before you can talk of generating revenue, you need to open the economy to build industries and create jobs. Like I told you, we are going to create industries in our local government areas. I can tell you that presently, I work with Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). ABUAD is the largest payer of tax in Ekiti State; so if you create jobs, definitely you will generate IGR but it is unfair to tell people to pay tax when they are not being paid or when there is no job. So, we will create jobs, bring industries to the state and generate money through that means. We have genuine strategies for generating funds, we will not let the cat out of the bag now.

We will raise funds in a way that is citizens friendly and won’t be a burden on people and we will be able to generate money to able to run government.

Do you believe that your party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has the capacity and wherewithal to dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC) from government in the Osun 2018 governorship election?

I believe so absolutely that it is possible to sack the APC from the Okefia Government House. You saw what happened n the Osun West senatorial election; out of ten local government areas, APC barely won one and that tells you that people are yearning for a better change in the state. I can tell you that the next election is for PDP to take; once we out our house in order, I can assure you that the PDP will form the next government in Osun State and by the grace of God, I, Adeolu Durotoye, will be the next Governor of Osun State.

What are the other areas you hope to make the difference when you assume the reins of governance?

We will make difference in terms of how we treat our civil servants, they deserve their wage on time, they deserve more than what they are getting now, they deserve to be better exposed to global standards of doing things. In the western clime, teachers are well-paid. We will give that job the dignity it deserves when we train the trainers by exposing our teachers to global standards of teaching, we also ensure that we bring commerce back to the state. We will make Osun, the ICT headquarters of Nigeria; we will make Osun what Silicon Valley is to the United States. Silicon Valley in San Jose, California, you see a how knowledge is used to drive the economy through Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and the likes. Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder of Facebook, didn’t just come to Nigeria for fun. He knows that we have the potentials here and we will bring ICT to Osun and ensure that Osun becomes the headquarters of ICT in Nigeria. Our mission is to crate an enabling environment for everyone to excel; our visio is to make Osun what the state of California is to America.

What is you final message to the people of Osun State as the 2018 governorship election beckons?

The people of Osun State deserve more than what they are getting now; they must ensure that they vote wisely. Number one, they must get their voters’ cards because the exercise is still on. They must get their cards and must not sell their votes. If you sell your votes, you will impoverish yourselves for the next four years. Don’t sell your vote; vote for the candidate who has the exposure, who has the experience, the technical know-how, who has the education, who has the capacity, the youthfulness, the energy to get the job done and that candidate is Prof. Adeolu Durotoye.

  • Osun monarch lauds Aregbesola for all-round development

Osun monarch lauds Aregbesola for all-round development

The Olojudo of Ido-Osun in Osun State, Oba Aderemi Adeen Adedapo, has said Governor Rauf Aregbesola is a true democrat whose tenure has brought unprecedented development to the state.

The monarch said Osun State never witnessed the kind of development being experienced under the Aregbesola administration since its creation over two decades ago.

Oba Adedapo, who led his chiefs, subjects and top political office holders from the ancient town, spoke in Osogbo, the state capital, during a visit to Aregbesola at the Government House.

The monarch hailed Aregbesola for building a sustainable and reassuring future for the state.

He noted that the governor had successfully redefined democracy in line with its fundamental principles.

He said: “This is reflected in the priority given to all sectors, particularly infrastructure development, education and security.

“It is only an enemy of progress that will fail to acknowledge what Aregbesola has done in the last seven years. Since the creation of Osun, we have never had a governor like him because he has done excellently well.

“He has proven to us that nothing is as good as democracy because his administration has brought good governance to Osun State.

“Though governments go and come, but none of those who had, in one way or the other, administered the affairs of this state did what Aregbesola did and achieved in his seven years.

“It is under Aregbesola we see good roads, good schools, quality free education system, particularly the construction of bridges and access roads across the state.”

Praising the state government for establishing the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO) Abiola International Airport at Ido-Osun, Oba Adedapo described the gesture as fitting.

The monarch prayed for the socio-economic prosperity and stability of the state.

He prayed God to continue to uphold Osun and its people and bestow on them abundant blessings and divine favours.

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Alhaji Gbadebo Ajao, also hailed Aregbesola for “bringing wonders” to the state through human and infrastructural developments.

He said: “We are here to appreciate you. We are here to express our support. What you did for us in Ido-Osun is uncommon. No government has ever done what you did for us. You have given us recognition in all your policies and programmes because our town and its people are indeed beneficiaries of many of your programmes.

“We can’t close our eyes to reality, particularly the infrastructure development. We have seen good roads, not only in our town but across the state. We have seen ‘Aje’ market, which has no replica in Nigeria.

“We have seen your commitment to ensure that MKO Abiola International Airport comes to reality. We have seen the level of the work and the assurance on the completion of the airport which, hopefully, will commence operation in the next eight months.

“You have given us a Local Council Development Authority (LCDA). You have opened up our town to the world, particularly the state capital. We commend your sense of patriotism, nationalism and high sense of commitment to good governance.

“You have brought to us unprecedented development. You have turned around the fortunes for good. We commend your government for being passionate about our well-being. All you did has never been witnessed since the creation of this state.”

A member the House of Assembly, representing Egbedore, Abiodun Awolola, applauded Aregbesola for developing the state, despite the state’s meagre resources.

He urged the people to support the administration, adding that its achievements so far are just a “tip of the iceberg”.

Aregbesola renewed his administration’s commitment to continually engender all round growth and development.

The governor called for continued support from the residents, reaffirming that “no stone would be left unturned at taking Osun to its desired destination”.

  • Aregbesola unhappy about unpaid workers’ full salaries

Aregbesola unhappy about unpaid workers’ full salaries

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has expressed unhappiness over his administration’s inability to pay full salary to civil servants and political appointees.

Addressing a team of Federal Government on the Digital Switch Over on an advocacy visit to the state, Aregbesola, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, stressed that not all the civil servants were affected by the partial salary payment.

The governor said the nation’s economic downturn, which was induced by brazen corruption, wanton theft of crude oil and mismanagement of resources by the former Federal Government under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), put the state in its current economic doldrums.

He said no reasonable person or government would be happy for being incapable of performing his or its responsibility.

Aregbesola said: “We are not happy paying modulated salary to civil servants and political appointees. We are compelled by the financial reality; we are constrained.

“Contrary to the lies you are being fed with, it is not all our workers that receive half salaries. Workers on levels One to Seven, being the most vulnerable and the largest chunk of the workforce, get full salaries. Workers on levels Eight to 11 showed understanding with the government to accept 75 per cent of their salaries.

“It is only workers on Grade Level 12 and upwards that receive 50 per cent of their salaries. The workers have shown maturity, support and understanding. We acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifice and support of the workers.”

Aregbesola said the financial burden on his administration was to enable it provide massive infrastructure to transform the state and develop it economically.

The governor said Osogbo, the state capital, needed infrastructural development to have a look of a modern state capital.

He said: “Before our government, Osogbo roads were very narrow. Since there was no development, there was no heavy traffic and the roads accommodated the users. However, there was an influx of people to the state since our administration came on board. There was a heavy traffic on Osogbo roads and they could not accommodate the heavy traffic anymore.

“We started construction of new roads and rehabilitation of some existing ones to ease traffic. As a visionary government, we know that by the time our economic plan begins to grow, Osogbo roads would become busier. So, we come up with the construction of Osogbo East bypass road. The road has four big bridges.

“Anybody who does not have business in Osogbo will take the road to various destinations. This will reduce the traffic on Osogbo township roads. We built the road for economic purposes. People who are narrow in thinking do not know that.

“We know that things are hard and the state is passing through financial difficulty. But we are undeterred by the challenges. Our credo is to see that our people explore their freedom for economic prosperity.

“Our joy is that we will leave a legacy that will transform into economic prosperity for the people and the state. Like the credo of our mentor, the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, we want freedom for all, life more abundant.”

  • APC hails Ajimobi, Aregbesola for reopening LAUTECH

APC hails Ajimobi, Aregbesola for reopening LAUTECH

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has praised Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and his Osun State counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola, for the resolution of the 10-month industrial crisis at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) at Ogbomoso.

Striking workers of LAUTECH, on Tuesday, have agreed to return to work.

The two owner-states reportedly allocated a huge amount of money to pay a substantial fraction of arrears and other allowances, following completion of auditing by a private firm engaged to ensure accountability and transparency in the affairs of the university.

In a statement by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Olawale Sadare, Oyo APC regretted the situation that led to the closure of LAUTECH in December 2016.

It urged stakeholders to always guide against a recurrence “as all hands must be on deck to guarantee the future of youths through sound and qualitative education”.

The statement added: “There is no doubting the fact the governors of the owner states of LAUTECH mean well for the institution as they are both believers in education as the greatest legacy for leaders of tomorrow.

“The current situation in LAUTECH institutions – the university in Ogbomoso and the teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso and Osogbo leaves much to be desired but the good news is that we have capable hands and passionate minds in Ajimobi and Aregbesola as they are determined to reposition and transform LAUTECH/LTHs into viable institutions of global standard.

“We, therefore, urged the management, workers, students and all stakeholders to cooperate with the governments of Oyo and Osun to actualise the dream of LAUTECH, which would be to sustain its official rating as one of the best in the world. While we count on the governments to prioritise adequate funding of the institutions, we make a passionate appeal to the managements to guarantee accountability, transparency and service at all times for the good of the system.”

  • Inject new blood into civil service, Aregbesola tells new HoS

Inject new blood into civil service, Aregbesola tells new HoS

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged the new Head of Serviceý (HoS), Dr. Festus Olowogboyega Oyebade, to inject new blood into the state’s civil service to enhance productivity.

The governor spoke yesterday at the swearing-in of Dr. Oyebade at the multi-purpose hall of the Local Government Service Commission at the state secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital.

The ceremony came on the heels of the retirement of the immediate past HoS, Elder Sunday Owoeye, who voluntarily retired on Monday.

Aregbesola urged Oyebade to, within three months, harmonise the civil service in a way that government employees could have the capacity to work anywhere and in any office in the state.

The governor said the era of partitioning departments in the civil service was gone and should be replaced with organic network and fluid movement ýfrom one office to the other, from one department to the other and from one ministry to the other.

According to him, the harmonisation order will encourage any employee to work in any of the state’s establishments, regardless of the criteria he or she entered the service with.

Aregbesola noted that the fluidity of movement would also expand the office space in such a way that any worker – either in the local government or state – can easily be moved round  to any ministry, department or agency without any hindrance to his ability to work.

The governor said the decision was taken to strengthen bureaucracy, enhance productivity, promote efficiency, diligence and effectiveness in all strata of the state’s civil service.

He said: “Oyebade’s biggest task in repositioning the service will be changing perception on the role and responsibilities of the workers in government.

“This is because our experience, given the challenges we faced recently, suggests that this understanding is lacking, particularly in the larger society.

“Workers, by this I mean all categories of employees, including active workers, passive workers and the political appointees, primarily, are the instruments for delivering on governance and not the objects of governance.

“The government exists to serve the people of the state, although this will include the workers also, since they are residents and tax payers. Workers are the instruments of service. The government, therefore, must not be reduced to the exclusive preserve of workers.

The governor said that members of the current commission were inaugurated on June 6, 2012, adding that their tenure had expired.

Residents of Osun State have hailed Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his exemplary leadership since he assumed office in November 2010.

Also, community leaders at Ile-Ogbo in Ayedire Local Government Area said the opposition lacks the leadership acumen to govern the state as the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration has done.

The residents of Ile-Ogbo sad they supported the Aregbesola administration for its commitment to the campaign promises the governor made in 2007 and during his re-election in 2014.

The residents spoke at the ancient town while hosting the governor and his entourage.

Aregbesola had observed the Jum’at prayers at the town’s central mosque before paying homage to the Olu of Ile-Ogbo at his palace.

The residents trooped out en masse to welcome the governor, who led the chieftains of the APC and other top political functionaries to the town for Jum’at service.

Osun 2018: Aregbesola factor ’ll decide who wins

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has been urged to close ranks and work harder to ensure the victory of the party in  next year’s governorship election.

In a statement in Osogbo, the state capital, the President of the Liberty Forum, Mr Edward Olusola Ajayi, said the outcome of the election will  be determined by the influence of Governor  Rauf Aregbesola, his team and their numerous supporters. He said the Aregbesola factor will play the most significant role in the exercise.

He said the APC is ahead of the other political parties in the state, in terms of capacity to win the poll.

Ajayi added: “From what we have seen, the APC is better positioned to win the 2018 election in Osun. It is also clear that the incumbent governor has been a rallying point for the revolutionary changes that have taken place in Osun in the face of scarce resources.

“The governor’s high level of fiscal discipline, his moral attributes and his sincerity of purpose puts him ahead as the iconic character whose charm will largely influence the outcome of the governorship election.”

Ajayi said following his tour of Osun State, he has realised that many people hold Aregbesola in high esteem.

He said the “openness and transparency of the governor” have strengthened the confidence of the workers and masses in him.

Ajayi stressed: “Osun has witnessed tremendous experiences that are uncommon. The state has been badly affected by poor allocation, but the governor has brought a lot of wisdom in managing the lean resources.

Osun 2018: Aregbesola, APC must work harder for victory

The All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Osun State has been urged to close ranks and work harder to ensure the victory of the party in the next gubernatorial election in the state. In a statement issued in Osogbo at the weekend, a socio-political group, Liberty Forum, said the outcome of the next election in the state will largely be determined by the influence of the Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

President of the forum, Edward Olusola Ajayi, who signed the release, said the Aregbesola factor will play the most significant role in determining who wins the 2018 gubernatorial election in the state. The group said the APC is however ahead of the other political parties in the state in terms of capacity to win the next gubernatorial election.

“From what we have seen, APC is better positioned to win the 2018 election in Osun. It is also clear that the incumbent governor has been a rallying point for the revolutionary changes that have taken place in Osun in the face of scarce resources. The Governor’s high level of fiscal discipline, his moral attributes and his sincerity of purpose puts him ahead as the iconic character whose charm will largely influence the outcome of the gubernatorial election,” the statement read in part.

According to the group, though some categories of workers have not been paid their salary, but the “openness and transparency of the governor” strengthens the confidence of the workers and masses in him. “Osun has witnessed tremendous experiences that are uncommon. The state has been badly affected by poor allocation, but the governor has brought a lot of wisdom in managing the lean resources.

He has denied himself personal benefits, he earns no salary, his aides have been receiving only 50 percent of their salaries while the workers on level 07 downwards are paid as at when due. Nigeria in recession was signified by the personal lifestyle of the governor and his aides. They are making sacrifices that people can see,” the group stated.
