Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos) were among dignitaries at the eighth day prayer for Madam Sikiratu Omowumi Akande, wife of the former interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande.

Others at the fidau were: Osun State Geputy Governor Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori; Osun State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Moshood Adeoti; Chief of Staff to Osun Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola; Osun State Head of Service (HoS), Olayinka Sunday Owoeye; former Ogun State Deputy Governor Segun Adesegun and former Osun State Deputy Governor Adeleke Adewoyin.

A delegation of the state House of Assembly and executive council members of the Aregbesola administration was at the prayers.

Aregbesola said every mortal must be conscious of the end-time, adding that it was necessary for people to always be reminded of the Day of Judgement in all they do.

The governor, who described the death of Mrs. Akande as a great loss to the state and Nigeria, said her demise would not only create a vacuum in Akande’s dynasty but the state and the Southwest.

He said though Madam Akande’s death was personally painful but he was consoled by the deceased’s service God and humanity.

Aregbesola said: “We are very grateful to God Almighty for the peaceful passage of Mrs Akande ýbecause as mortals we know that an end must come to our existence here on this planet.

“Though we are pained by this colossal loss and great transition of Mama, but it is our beliefs that her soul will be reposed in the finest Paradise by God.

We pray God to make her soul find a good location of rest in her new station.”

Consoling the immediate and extended Akande’s family on the demise of their loved one, Aregbesola prayed God to give Chief Akande and the children of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss.

    Osun’s development amazing – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, on Thursday said he was amazed at the pace of development in Osun State despite its meagre resources.

Ambode said he would support his Osun State counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola’s developmental efforts in the state.

The duo also renewed calls for South-West regional integration.

A statement signed by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Osun State, Semiu Okanlawon, said the two governors made the call when Ambode visited his Osun counterpart at the Government House in Osogbo.

The Lagos State governor said was time for the region to fully exploit its potential by standing with Aregbesola’s legacy in Osun.

He said the Lagos State government is fully committed to the South West regional integration for its economic potential to be fully harnessed and sustained.

He said: “We have an historic duty to join Aregbesola in championing what he has been clamouring for, which is the integration of the South West.

“I fully commit myself to the integration of the South West because I believe it is the only way the region can fully explore its potentials for the benefit of all.

“I can assure you that the South West has all it takes to stand alone and survive without having to depend on any external means of funding.”

Ambode highlighted Aregbesola’s developmental strides in Osun, saying the governor has laid unprecedented marks of development in the state.

  • Olu Abiola’s death has robbed us of another patriot, says Aregbesola

Olu Abiola’s death has robbed us of another patriot, says Aregbesola

OSUN State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has joined other Osun and well-meaning Nigerians in commiserating with the family of the late Chief Olu Abiola, who died on Sunday.

He said the late Abiola was a true patriot.

In a statement by the Director of Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor described Abiola’s death as a great loss to the business circle, Osun State and Nigeria.

The governor said the late industrialist and Chairman of Unique FM radio station, fondly called Baba Olomi, was an invaluable asset to the business world.

Aregbesola said Abiola’s death had robbed the state and the Industrial sector of another great personality.

He said: “The death of Chief Olu Abiola is a sad one to us in Osun. Here is a man of immense qualities, which he had employed to promote everything ideal in his lifetime.

“Chief Olu Abiola, undoubtedly, distinguished himself in the Business sector to the extent that his name became a household across the country.

“He made his mark in the timber industry and became one of the great timber merchants in the country. Chief Abiola was also a notable socialite.

“Throughout his life, he distinguished himself as a man of immense wealth, a gentleman and an Omoluabi per excellence, which is what the Osun epitomises.

“There is, therefore, no gainsaying the fact that Abiola’s exit will create a huge gap in the business and industrial space in Nigeria. We are, however, consoled by the fact that he led a fulfilled life.

“I, on behalf of the government and people of Osun, offer our heartfelt condolences to the immediate and extended families of deceased as well as his friends and well-wishers.

“We pray that the Almighty God reposes his gentle soul in paradise.”

•Governor: Osun has lost committed officer

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the death of the Permanent Secretary at the Bureau of General Services in the Governor’s Office, Mrs Olufunke Oluwakemi Kolawole, is a big loss to the state’s civil service.

A statement by the Director of the Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, said the governor spoke during his condolence visit to the family of the slain permanent secretary.

Mrs Kolawole was reportedly killed last Thursday by suspected abductors on her way to Abuja.

Aregbesola noted that the death of Mrs Kolawole was not only shocking but left a huge vacuum in the state’s civil service.

The governor, who described the late permanent secretary as a great woman of virtues, added that she was loyal and dedicated.

He said the late Mrs Kolawole used her position to impact humanity.

According to him, death is a misery no one wants.

Aregbesola said: “It is a phenomenon that everyone hates. But because God has destined man to die, we all reconcile with death.

“It behoves on every mortal to always be conscious of the end-day and know that it is God that gives and takes at any time.

“Mrs Kolawole’s death is not only a rude shock to us as government but also a great misfortune at a time her quality services are needed most.

“Her sudden death is shocking, unfortunate and calamitous to the state and the civil service in particular. She was known to be a committed, dedicated and loyal civil servant who was never found wanting in her professional role to the people.

“She was a great woman. She was a committed being; a woman of courage and a loyal civil servant. She was diligent and upright to duty. This could be seen in her character of leaving office late, sometimes 12 a.m, sometimes 1 a.m. In fact, she worked round the clocks oftentimes.

“I knew the late Mrs Kolawole as a very hardworking woman who had never been derelict from duty.”

Commiserating with the family of the deceased, Aregbesola said: “I share your grieves, I share your pains and sorrows at the critical times.

“I also share the feelings of despondency in those that saw the deceased as a source of their livelihood. But one couldn’t but take solace in the enormity of the consequences of her sudden death.

“The news of her death was broken at a time the state was still nursing the transition of the wife of the former governor, Mrs Omowumi Akande…”

Health Minister, Prof Isaac Adewole, who joined the governor with other permanent secretaries and members of the State Executive Council (Exco), prayed for the family of the deceased.

  • Adeleke’s brothers using his death to manipulate Ede residents, says Aregbesola

Adeleke’s brothers using his death to manipulate Ede residents, says Aregbesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday expressed regret  that the family of the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke has been using his death to manipulate the minds of Ede residents.

The governor noted that since the death of the former Osun State governor in April, many lies and fabrications had emanated from his family and some of his loyalists.

He said the younger brother to the late politician, Dr. Deji Adeleke reportedly  claimed he lent the Aregbesola administration the money to pay workers’ salaries.

Aregbesola also said it was unthinkable that the Adeleke family claimed that he begged the late Senator to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor spoke in Ede when he led the campaign train of Senator Mudashir Husain to the town ahead of Saturday’s senatorial by-election.

Ede is the home town of the late Adeleke.

The governor and the Timi of Ede, Oba Muniru Adesola Lawal, called for peace before, during and after the election.

They said the poll should not cause a crisis among the people.

Aregbesola recalled that the APC did its best for the late former governor when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maltreated him.

The governor said it was the late Adeleke who voluntarily joined the APC because of the treatment he got in the PDP.

On the purported claim that the Adeleke family helped his re-election, the governor said he never collected a kobo them.

He said: “Deji Adeleke does not have the financial capacity to bail Osun out of its financial challenges, even before now; let alone lending us money to pay workers’ salaries. If anything at all, it is their family that sought and got favours from the Osun State government under my watch. It is to the glory of God that they got the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of their university from our government. Why didn’t those who are their new friends give them C of O of that university?”

  • Obasanjo made PDP in Southwest but tore its card, says Aregbesola

Obasanjo made PDP in Southwest but tore its card, says Aregbesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its relevance in the Southwest, following the tearing of its membership card by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The governor noted that the ex-President brought the party to the region and made it relevant.

He warned the opposition against importing into Osun State hoodlums and mercenaries who may cause mayhem during Saturday’s Osun West senatorial by-election.

Aregbesola spoke at the campaign for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Mudashir Hussain, at Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area.

The governor, who earlier visited the Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi, said the emergence of APC at the Federal level had ended PDP’s reign in the country.

He said PDP’s era had gone in Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest, as many of the party’s founding fathers had dumped it.

Aregbesola said: “Why would any sensible politician at this time want to associate with a party that is not only drowning but dead in the Southwest?

“It will be an exercise in futility for anybody to now want to wake up a dead horse through the July 8 Osun West senatorial by-election when founding fathers of the party have not only deserted the party but wouldn’t want to associate with it.

“We are all living witnesses to how the former President (Obasanjo) openly at his ward declared that the PDP had gone beyond redemption, hence his declaration of the obituary of the party with symbolic trashing of his membership card.”

The governor warned troublemakers, especially the opposition nursing the idea of unleashing militants on the people during the July 8 by-election, to jettison the plan.

He said: “Why will anybody think that the people of Osun, who stood firm even in the face of provocation during the last general election under the supervision of the PDP-led government then, would now waver from such determination?

“It is on record that despite the intimidation by the then security apparatus, who invaded the state with weird-looking officers with strange-looking dogs, could not deter our people from associating with our good governance? Why will they be deterred by militants?

“We use this medium to warn any militant, who the opposition has contracted, to think twice before coming to Osun. The government is ever ready to use every lawful means at its disposal to smoke them out of the state.”

Huge crowd as Aregbesola leads APC’s mega rally

OSUN State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday led a mega rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in next Saturday’s Osun West senatorial by-election, Mudashiru Hussain.

A huge crowd attended the rally at Ejigbo, the ancient town in Osun West Senatorial District.

The governor told the crowd that APC withdrew the Senate ticket from Hussain in 2015 to rescue the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke from political humiliation.

In honour of the late Adeleke, he asked the crowd to observe one minute of silence.

Aregbesola prayed for the repose of the soul of the politician.

The governor said APC leadership took the decision to restore Adeleke’s dignity and integrity, having allegedly suffered humiliation from his erstwhile political friends.

Before mounting the rostrum in front of the oba’s palace, Aregbesola had visited the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode Oyesosin.

The governor frowned at what he called unfounded speculations on why the party chose Hussain.

He said neither him nor any other member of the party did Adeleke’s family any harm.

Aregbesola said the party asked Hussain, who was nursing his second term ambition in 2015, to withdraw, having understood the level of humiliation meted out to the late Adeleke by leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “It is pertinent to clear the air that Hussain was asked by the leadership of the APC in 2015 to withdraw his Senate ticket for the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke who we felt sober about the humiliation meted out to him by his former party.

“We took this decision unanimously – by the leaders of our party – because at that time APC was the only party that could rescue Adeleke from humiliation.

“The action was taken to restore the already lost dignity, integrity and political relevance of the late Adeleke, who had been humiliated in the PDP.

“As we all know, Adeleke defected to APC and the only thing the party considered as honourable to compensate him and wipe off the degrees of humiliation given him was to give him the Senate ticket.

“To me, we wonder how harm has been done to anyone on this because what the party did was the best, despite the fact that Hussain felt cheated. We talked to him, begged him and he remained loyal to the party, even to this present moment.”

  • Aregbesola cautions US over Trump’s decision on climate change

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged the United States of America to consider its stand concerning climate change, as whatever decision America takes will affect many countries.

This was even as the United States of America Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington described the social protection programmes of Osun Government as dividend of democracy and good governance.

The American envoy also lauded the State Government for running an impactful and people-oriented government in spite of the current economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Aregbesola, while hosting Syminton, who visited him at the Governor’s office in Osogbo, said the United States of America had over the years evolved to be a major factor in what happens to the other parts of the world.

He added that when an entity becomes powerful as America in the world, such a nation needs to consider other nations before taking major decisions.

The governor noted that the position of America in the world is so strategic to the extent that major decisions of the United States have direct bearing on other nations of the world.

According to Aregbesola, America is so important and significant that issues like climate change can not be taken for granted.

He said: “America has evolved to be a major factor in world growth and development to the extent that whatever decision the country takes on any burning issue shakes the world.

“When an entity is as powerful as America, such entity needs to be very careful about every major decision it takes because of other countries.

“An entity whose decision can affect other nations of the world must be very careful.

“America’s human and international relations must not be taken for granted, if you love America it is to your own benefit and if you hate America it is to your own disadvantage,” the Governor stated.

The Osun governor also said his administration came into government with a clear objective of how to tackle its responsibilities to the people.

He said the coming into power of the administration was to revive the peace, progress and prosperity of the state and the nation at large.

Aregbesola maintained that his administration focused on the six-point integral action plan which has over the years made his government to focus on social security areas through schemes such as the O-YES, O-MEALS,O-AMBULANCE the welfare scheme for the aged among others.

“We came into government with a clear objective, it is to stimulate the growth and development of the Osun people and to leave them better than the way we met them.

“From the onset, our goal for the people of the state was clear to us. As part of our efforts to take our people out of poverty, we re-energised the school feeding programme which we met on ground.

“The O’MEAL programme of our state has turned subsistence farming into a commercial venture in Osun. It has boosted the sales of agricultural products in the state tremendously” Aregbesola stated.

Speaking earlier, Symington, who praised the efforts of the state government in road infrastructure likened it to human development.

The envoy also applauded various social intervention programmes of Aregbesola through job and wealth creation, saying that is why people are always interested in coming to the state to learn.

Describing democracy as the best form of government in the world, Syminton noted that the policies adopted by the Osun state government in stimulating her economy and advancing the well-being of her citizens remains the major characteristics of democracy in the world.

UNICEF hails Aregbesola’s social protection policies

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) at the weekend said Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola is a symbol of service to human development.

The international organisation hinged its commendation on the governor’s commitment to human and infrastructure development since he assumed office in 2010.

The Chief of Field Services of UNICEF Nigeria, Dr. Annefrida Kisessa, spoke at a get-together organised by the state in honour of representatives from 15 states and leadership of UNICEF on a visit to Osun to learn more about the state’s social protection programmes and its successes.

Dr. Kisessa expressed delight over what she called “good governance in action” in Osun State.

The UNICEF chief said the state had revolutionalised governance in Nigeria.

She hailed Aregbesola’s commitment and passion to humanity, saying the governor’s social protection programmes are among the best in the country.

The UNICEF team leader said the social intervention initiatives under Aregbesola had been assessed to be impactful, beneficial and rewarding.

She said: “I have visited between 15 and 20 states in Nigeria. Since I have been visiting, I have not seen a leader like Aregbesola with rare passion for people’s welfare.

“I have seen your passion to banish poverty, banish hunger, restore healthy living, promote functional and quality education for your people, among others. I have seen your passion to develop your people and your state. I am really proud of your achievements because I have seen your indelible legacies in all sectors.

“With what I have seen, it is clear that Osun has shown that education is the key to development. Your programmes are no doubt centred on the people as your social protection projects are designed to better the lives of your people, especially the less privileged, vulnerable and downtrodden.

  • How Aregbesola will be remembered

A song writer penned this song ” we shall be remembered, we shall be remembered by what we have done”. One of the founding fathers of newswatch magazine Ray Epku recently asked in his article in Guardian if Aregbsola will be remembered by his state. We know that history is written by a Victor. Every public office holder starts writing his story from the moment they are elected.

Aregbesola will certainly be remembered for several unforgettable good deeds. The Philosopher states ” the best way to live is to live in the present and not attempt to shape the future ” Assuming Ekpu lives in Osun, he might have realised that the question is unnecessary, but few days later, a PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, also stated that the state has nothing to show as an achievement for the past six years. Just as it is often said that when lies is allowed to prevail for long it might be taken for truth. There were three groups of men in the state who nursed defeat they suffered as a result of Aregbesola’s victory at the polls. The first group were those who held to power due to Electoral manipulation for three and a half years when they were sacked by the Court of Appeal. Some have since joined the APC.

The second group were the men that were counting on the time that the gubernatorial election will come to their zones, but the court verdict blew off their chance. This second group are much more desperate. One of them vowed in 2014 that he must win the election at all costs, failure which he was ready to die. He tried but failed but has since refused to die. The third group were the political hangers-on. They benefits from the power that be. The change of power has since rendered them beggars and haters of Aregbsola administration. Initially, they falsely alleged that the incumbent governor suffered from cancer, but when that kite failed to fly, they took to criticise him that he was doing nothing in the state.

Later when Aregbesola turned the whole state to construction sites they were dumbfounded and started saying that the state indebtedness is beyond redemption. So far, there is no local government councils areas that have not seen the impact of Aregbesola’so administration. The six-point integral Action plans: Banish Poverty, Banish Hunger, Banish Unemployment, Restore Healthy living, Promote Functional Education, and Enhance Communal Peace and Progress continue as the guiding principles till date.

Will Aregbesola be remembered? Yes, he will be remembered as the man who whose mandate was stolen by the then incumbent but fought legal battle for three and half years to regain it to the extent that the then Federal government was much more concerned that the Electoral Law was amended to ensure that future Electoral litigation do not exceed six months. Aregbesola will be remembered as the first governor in Nigeria that employed 20,000 youths under the Osun Youths Employment Scheme (OYES) within 100 days in office. If his critics forget and go ahead that the man has done nothing for the past six years in office, the youths in their various wards and local governments areas will stand to counter their negative comments that they were the beneficiaries of Aregbesola empowerment.

Their parents and relations will speak to the electorate that they have become employers of labour through the OYES SCHEME. About 40 of the former beneficiaries of the scheme will mobilise their households that they became landlords through the OYES Scheme, and that if the scheme has not been on the ground they might still be wandering about seeking for jobs that are not available. If political opponents failed to see what the man Aregbesola has done in the state for the past six years, the students that were formerly learning in shred and poultry sheds will celebrate the icon of modern innovator of Opon Imo learning device that contains over 64 text books, past questions and answers in WAEC EXAMINATION NECO and JAMB. A device that was acknowledged by UNESCO and even WAEC. .

An educational device that made Osun and the helmsman to receive several awards across the globe. The over 20 newly constructed High Schools, 22 Elementary Schools are enough cynosure for those with eyes irrespective of tribes, colour or religion. It is no more news that President Muhammadu Buhari was dumbfounded as to how the governor was able to fund such facilities despite the economic downturn. Apart from the modern facilities that were provided in these new schools, the schools were given befitting school buses to transport students to and from schools. We may forget that the man provides free school uniforms for over 75000 students across the state, but will the parents and pupils forget? But in case they do, in the future when it shall be asked who introduced the same uniforms for all the pupils in primary and secondary schools whose name will they mention? Free meals are daily being served across the state to the extent that the state experienced geometrical increase in the school enrolment in the primary schools above any other states in Nigeria. The free meals scheme has also provided markets for both farmers and poultry farmers beyond the state.

The eggs consumption by the pupils went beyond the supply of the local farmers to the extent that farmers in Kwara State now sells for the state cooks. As if that was all the state need to serve as a model to the Federal government who has since adopted the free schools meal. The United Kingdom was highly impressed by the school meal programme that the governor was invited to address the UK parliament over it. On the introduction of free schools meal in UK, each parent was projected to save about £50,000 annually. A prophet they said has no respect except in his own home, while our people fail to see that a healthy and well fed children will learn better and perform excellently well, a foreign country saw the importance. The Americans do say “aren’t seen nothing yet”. In case those who claimed the man cannot be remembered for anything, maybe they are always flying to and from the state otherwise they are likely to have passed through the trumpet bridge that is under construction at Gbongan.

They are likely to have been to Orileowu or to Osogbo, Ilesa, Ikirun Ile Ife, but in case they have not let them ask from anybody from any of the 30 local government areas and the newly established Developmental areas if they have experienced any road construction the answer will likely be positive. The health sector and those that have been saved due to the nearest of hospitals and maternity will remember that a man was in charge of the state for six years past. The accident victims that were saved through the prompt response of the O Ambulances will remember that Aregbesola saved them from death. The REHAB, the agency that pick and rehabilitate the mentally challenged people across the state will forever be grateful for the man that rescued and rehabilitated them and gave them a new life to live. •Obaditan is an aide to the Osun governor
