  • Aregbesola: attack on Ado Bayero a wicked act

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged the federal and state governments to partner on youth employment.

He said this would curb insurgency in the country.

Aregbesola was reacting to the attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero by gunmen.

Describing the attack as “unconscionable and sacrilegious”, he decried the “total paralysis of the social and economic activities” caused by the activities of insurgents.

The governor said the unending spate of violence has created a palpable atmosphere of fear in the nation.

In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola said: “We condemn this unconscionable attack on an octogenarian, who is also a traditional ruler, in very strong terms. It is un-African and against all known religious doctrines. It should call for the concern of all patriots.

“As we condole with the emir, the people of Kano and Nigerians on the death of the emir’s guards; driver; the Interim Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Alhaji Salisu Kura and other victims of the sad and unfortunate attacks, it is important for all patriots to reflect on the atmosphere of insecurity that pervades the nation.

“While very conscious of the Federal Government’s containment programme, we must admit that containment alone of whatever nature and degree cannot solve these challenges.

“A situation where the generality of Nigerians and eminent people live in fear; where economic and social activities have been paralysed calls for the concern of all. It will amount to false confidence to assume that these crises are limited to a section of Nigeria.

“The duration of this insurgency and the intensity of its operations coupled with some manifestations all over Nigeria of some other forms of threats to national security, such as kidnapping, require a review of tactics and strategy in dealing with this abnormal condition.

“It is in this light that we urge all governments in Nigeria that an emergency should be declared on youth employment; that the Federal Government should minimally promote a policy of matching each state one to one on youth employment with a maximum of 10,000 in what we call he counterpart youth employment initiative.

“What this means is that while a state employs 10,000 youths, the Federal Government should support that state with another 10,000, creating 20,000 jobs for youths in each state.

“While these youths will be deployed in community, social and public works, this initiative should last for a minimum of five years. This, coupled with military actions, will stop youth insurgency in the country.”

Aregbesola prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed in the attack.

  • Aregbesola seeks preservation of Yoruba artefacts

Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday called on South West governors to preserve the Yoruba cultural and traditional artefacts.

He spoke during a sympathetic visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on the fire outbreak that ravaged his palace last week.

Aregbesola said Alaafin should call all Yoruba leaders to a meeting with a view to mapping out strategies on how to construct a fireproof structure around the ancient artefacts.

The governor, who described the incident as sad and shocking, said efforts should be made to ensure that none of them should be exposed to destruction by any circumstance.

He described the ancient Alaafin palace as the emblem of the Yoruba race and Alaafin the custodian of Yoruba culture, tradition and artefacts.

The governor added that if the Yorubas should showcase half of their artefacts to the world, the race would be celebrated as one of the forerunners of the world civilisations.

He said: “It is a very sad incident. The stable of Alaafin should not get burnt, let alone the palace where every object has connection to Yoruba history.

“Well-meaning Yoruba people must come together to do whatever is necessary to forestall similar occurrence. It is high time for Yorubas to protect the symbols of our cultural heritage.”

  • Aregbesola, Amosun, Ondo PDP eulogise Adegbonmire

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has described the death of Chief Wunmi Adegbonmire, a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State, as “a big loss to progressive politics”.

In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola said the late Adegbonmire was one of the most committed followers of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said the late Afenifere leader, who died at 77, was consistent and courageous in the struggle for a better society.

The governor said: “Chief Adegbonmire was our symbol of progressive politics in Ondo State. He was an astute administrator, writer, consistent politician and unblemished statesman. He made a mark in the history of democracy.

“In the wake of the loss of Southwest to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and when the Alliance for Democracy (AD) was enmeshed in leadership crisis, Adegbonmire teamed up with others, including former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, who was the only survivor of the PDP’s invasion in the Southwest, to float the Action Congress (AC), which later changed to the ACN.

“Adegbonmire would be missed by all progressives, especially in the light of the recent development in the nation, which calls for the rallying of all progressive-minded persons to confront the reactionary forces that have held Nigeria by the jugular.”

Aregbesola urged the family of the deceased to be consoled by his selfless service to humanity.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said the late Adegbonmire was a “progressive politician of distinction and social crusader, who fought for the restoration of civil rule in Nigeria”.

In a statement by his media aide, Mrs. Funmi Wakama, Amosun said: “Chief Adegbonmire was a fearless writer and principled politician. He was devoted to the cause of the masses. The reserve of the progressives in the country has again been depleted with his shocking death.”

The governor prayed for the repose of Adegbonmire’s soul.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State yesterday visited the family of the late politician in Akure, the state capital.

Mr. Saka Lawal, who led the delegation, said: “We are here to commiserate with the family of Chief Adegbonmire. He was a respected elder statesman, who stood for truth, honesty and development.

“He loved the masses and was concerned about the level of poverty and underdevelopment in the society. He never minced words when it came to telling the people in power the truth.

“He wished the state’s resources was better managed for the good of all. His contributions at the state and national levels contributed to the deepening of democracy in Nigeria. We will all miss him.”

PDP State Chairman Mr. Ebenezer Alabi said Adegbonmire’s death was “a big loss” to the state.

Alabi said the late Adegbonmire is a good example to upcoming politicians.

Others on the PDP’s delegation included the State Organising Secretary, Mr. Afolabi Akinbowale and former Commissioner for Transport Michael Omodara.

  • Aregbesola kicks off work on 218km roads

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday inaugurated work on the building of 218.12 km roads across the 30 local government areas.

Ten kilometre roads are to be built in each council.

At the ceremony in Ile-Ogbo, headquarters of Ayedire Local Government, the governor said part of the money for the project came from funds accruable to the state from the Excess Crude Oil Fund (ECOFUND).

He said the N16.21 billion project is a local government financed project, but coordinated and implemented in conjunction with the state government.

Aregbesola said of the N16.21 billion, N6 billion was put down and permission was taken from the House of Assembly to borrow the balance, which he said would be repaid within 60 months (five years).

He said all contractors would be adequately mobilised this week and urged them to deliver the projects promptly.

The roads are expected to be completed between March and September.

The governor said: “These road projects were initiated by the local councils. The state government only partnered with them in the areas of coordinating, implementation and execution.

“What our administration is telling the people with these projects is that not all politicians are wasteful, as regards resource management. The cardinal objective of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) is to improve the people’s welfare.”

Aregbesola thanked the Osun House of Assembly for its understanding and cooperation.

Ayedire Council Secretary Mr. Gbenga Ogunkami said the quality of the roads would be a departure from what used to be the tradition, adding that they would have a minimum of 20 years life span.

Also at the ceremony were Secretary to the Government Alhaji Moshood Adeoti; House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Akintunde Adegboye; members of the House and secretaries of the 30 local governments.

  • Kudos for Aregbesola on free train service

Beneficiaries of Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s free train service have hailed the gesture.

On Monday, the free train service offered by the state government for Christmas and New Year conveyed the second batch of passengers from Lagos to Osogbo.

The first batch on Sunday conveyed thousands of indigenes of Osun and other neighbouring states, such as Oyo, Ogun and Kwara, living in Lagos to Osogbo.

There was a sharp increase in the number of passengers who boarded the train on Monday.

Some of the passengers described Aregbesola as a masses-oriented governor whose gesture has positively affected the lives of many people.

Prophet Oyewole Sunday, an indigene of Ile-Ogbo, described the free rail service as incomparable, adding that no government has ever done so.

Flanked by his wife and three kids in the train, Owoeye said: “Apart from the fact that it is safer, what we would have spent on fare would have been enormous and with this gesture, such money would be used to take care of some other things.

“If no other thing, that is even enough, especially during this festive period. Aregbesola deserves nothing other than prayers, commendations and support from the people.”

Another passenger, Mr. Ogunlade Olusegun, said Aregbesola should be emulated by other governors.

He said: “This is a value-added initiative that would ensure the development of our country and ensure better living standard for the people.”

Mrs. Bamiduro Rachael, who boarded the train on her way to Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government, said: “God will continue to protect him, his family, his government and the entire state of Osun. He and his family would never be starved, because, a lot of people would have been stranded during this period, but for his kindness. God will reward him abundantly.”

The train would depart Osogbo on Wednesday to return passengers to Lagos.

Next Sunday and Monday, the train will convey passengers to Osogbo for the New Year and on January 2, 2013, it will return passengers to Lagos.

  • Aregbesola urges reflections on essence of Christmas

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has appealed to Christians to reflect on the essence of Christmas.

He urged them to remember the humility associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.

Governor Aregbesola restated his earlier position that the country’s security, political and economic challenges can only be surmounted in an atmosphere of peaceful co-existence.

The governor, in a statement issued by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, said Christians must love all, including non-Christians, for a better society.

Governor Aregbesola admonished Christians and other Nigerians to live in peace and harmony, saying his commitment to the ideals that promote peace, prosperity, and the total well-being of the populace through good governance remains unwavering.

He enjoined religious leaders to pray for Nigerian leaders and called on the government at all levels to deliver their campaign promises and put smiles on the faces of the people.

“We must imbibe the spirit of humility and love for one another, which are exemplified in the birth and teachings of Jesus Christ. I also want to use the occasion of the birth of Christ to urged leaders at all levels of governance to know that leadership is a trust. The position you hold is justifiable only if it contributes to the welfare of the people,” the governor said.

Aregbesola called for a renewal of faith in democracy among Nigerians, saying there is no alternative to freedom.

He said there is a challenge for Nigeria to advance the cause of justice, democracy, rule of law, freedom and respect for human dignity through efforts to demolish structures of oppression and injustice.

Said he: “We need to be admonished to remember that God’s design is a world that is free of hatred, recrimination and injustice. If we are God’s people, we owe Him and ourselves a duty to honour His injunctions, chief among which is the sanctity of life, respect for others and tolerance.

“The acute overlay of acrimony, tension and now sectarian violence calls for us to invoke the will and mercy of God on our country.”

  • MicCom’s funeral unites Aregbesola, Oyinlola

    MicCom’s funeral unites Aregbesola, Oyinlola

Barely two years and 25 days after reclaiming his mandate, Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and his immediate predecessor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, met for the first time.

They met yesterday at MicCom House at Ada, Boripe Local Government Area in Osun State, during the final funeral service of a bridge-builder and philanthropist, Mrs Comfort Olufunke Ponnle, an engineer and co-founder of MicCom Cables ad Wires.

It was a gathering that saw many of the dignitaries and guests anxiously wanting to know how the duo would face each other.

Aregbesola and Oyinlola displayed high level of maturity to the admiration of all. They exchanged pleasantries, hugged and pat themselves on the back. They spoke for a few minutes before returning to their seats. The gathering gave them a rousing ovation.

Co-incidentally, the governor arrived at the point the husband of the deceased, Prince Tunde Ponnle, mounted the podium to pay tribute to his departed jewel. He could not but pause for a while to watch the scenario.

The MicCom boss expressed delight watching the two statemen embracing each other not minding the turbulent years of political struggle for the leadership of the state.

Prince Ponnle described their peaceful meeting as a good omen, hoping it will be the end of political bickering in the state.

He told the governor his and the deceased’s plan to build an eight-storey building to beautify the state.

“When the physician told my wife that she had barely a week to live; one of the things we discussed is about the building and she told me to build it before joining her. We have secured a land, we are only waiting for the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to commence,” he said.

Afterwards, he exchanged pleasantries with the governor and was joined by Oyinlola and the state former Military Administrator, Colonel Theophilus Bamigboye, for a photograph.

Aregbesola, while greeting the guests, described Oyinlola as his brother. He prayed for the former governor to continue to prosper.

The governor seized the opportunity of the gathering to debunk insinuations that his government did not like the Ponnles.

He said his relationship with the Ponnles began in 1989 during one of his political struggles in Lagos. He said the deceased assisted him even to become the governor of the state unknowingly.

“But because my programme is not in tandem with the MicCom establishments, people thought I hate them. No, I don’t play golf like my predecessor does. We love you and very soon, we will do something to show that we truly have you in mind. Let it be on record that I and MicCom are not fighting but golf is not a gift to me from God,” he said.

On the proposed building, Aregbesola jokingly asked where the building would be situated. “Is it Ada, Osogbo or Okuku,” this drew laughter from the gathering, including Oyinlola.

    “Osogbo Sir,” Prince Ponnle replied.

“Don’t wait for the C of O, I have approved it today,” Aregbesola assured him. The guests, including the clerics, yelled in joy.

He later prayed for the deceased family and the gathering.

The remains of Madam Ponnle were lowered in the grave within the compound at exactly 2:33pm.

  • ACN hails Aregbesola on bond’s success

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Osun State has congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola on the success of the state’s bond in the capital market.

The bond was over subscribed by 100 per cent.

Describing the feat as “remarkable”, the party, in a statement by its Publicity Director, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said the success is unprecedented in the history of the capital market in Nigeria.

It said the success has proved the financial management skill of the governor and his team.

ACN said: “This should silence the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has been lying about the state’s economy in the last two years.

“Economic experts, who are in the best position to determine whether or not a state is in good economic health, have by their response to this bond issue announced to the whole world that Osun State is perhaps the safest place for investors to put their money.

“This was eloquently demonstrated by the over subscription by 100 per cent of the N22 billion first tranche of the N30 billion bond raised at the Security and Exchange Commission. Investors practically scrambled for it.

“We hail the governor for not losing focus. It is now clear that his resounding success in just two years is not intangible after all.”
