Osinbajo to North traditional rulers: Speak against divisive voices

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday urged traditional rulers from the North to rise up to the occasion and speak up against divisive voices in the region.

Some Arewa youths had recently given ultimatum to Igbos to leave the North on or before October 1st, 2017.

They claimed that they were reacting to the sit-at-home order issued by IPOB on 30th of May.

But the Acting President said that the traditional rulers have a great role to play in the matter.

He said: “As Royal Fathers and Traditional Leaders, your place and your role in our society and nation is significant. You are the custodians of our cultures and traditions, and living embodiments of our rich heritage.

“You are, by virtue of your vast knowledge, wisdom and experience, both a vital link with our past, and an important guarantee for the success of our future. This is why your role in national affairs is critical.

“The reason for these series of meetings is well known to all of us: it became necessary in the wake of a spate of divisive statements, in recent months and weeks, pitching the Southeast against the North. We are all aware of the so-called ‘ultimatum’ issued by a group of Northern youths, asking that all Igbos living in the North vacate the region.

“Before then, there was the clamour, and it’s still ongoing, by some south-eastern youths, operating as IPOB and affiliated groups, demanding secession from Nigeria at all costs and by any means.

“In all our previous engagements with Northern and South-Eastern leaders, we all came to the consensus that Nigeria is stronger and better together, and that these hate-filled and divisive rhetoric and agitations are unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal. And I would like to reiterate that today,” he said.

Stressing that Nigeria has already seen enough violence and bloodshed during its history, he said that the price of Nigeria’s unity has already been paid with the blood and lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost.

Recalling President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to one Nigeria from his experience in the Military, Osinbajo said that Buhari fought side by side with Nigerians of every tribe and faith.

Osinbajo added “He said we protected each other, put our lives on the line for each other, we were brothers even in the face of death. This is the type of nation we must maintain.

“As Royal Fathers and Leaders, I think you will agree with me that we all have a role to play in countering the voices of divisiveness, and the elements who seek to take us down a bloody path.

“Let us continue to counsel the misguided elements among our youth, who think that ethnic confrontation is a game and that words can be thrown around carelessly without repercussion.” he said

He assured the traditional rulers that the government is not deaf to the legitimate concerns and frustrations in parts of the country.

“Every part of Nigeria has its own grievances. But these have to be expressed graciously and managed with mutuality rather than with scorn and disdain.

“I would like to assure you all that we are here to listen and to answer, and, very importantly, to reassure everyone that we are committed to the unity of Nigeria, and that upon the foundation of that unity we can together build a prosperous and great country.

“We must never take our diversity for granted; the fullness of our strength actually lies in that diversity. And we must wield that diversity, not as divisive tool, but instead as a binding agent.

“As we round up these consultations tomorrow with a meeting with governors, it is clear to me that we are all resolved to by words, conduct and action, promote the unity of our dear nation.” he said

He however said that the government will ensure that the entire apparatus of government is deployed to ensure that no one threatens Nigeria’s territorial integrity and that no one threatens the lives or livelihoods of any Nigerian living anywhere in the country.

The objective of the government, he said, is to provide the environment for a prosperous nation, where all, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can pursue their legitimate aspirations peacefully and securely.

Thanking the traditional rulers for their unyielding cooperation and support, he said: “May the Almighty God continue to give you the wisdom and the strength to preside over your Kingdoms and the good health to reign long and reign well.”

Among those who attended the meeting included the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; Emir of Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and HRH Alhaji Dr Yahaya Abubakar Etsu Nupe Niger State.

Others are Alh Ibrahim Sule Gambari,Emir of Ilorin,Kwara State, HRH Alhaji Mustapha Agwai II, Emir of Lafia,Nasarawa State, HRH Alhaji Kyari Umar El-Kanemi, Shehu of Bama representing Shehu of Borno, HRH Jacob Buba Jang,Gbong Gwon Jos.

Group calls for prosecution of Arewa youths

The Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF) has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Arewa youths, who issued ultimatum to the Igbo living in the North to leave before October 1.

In a statement, its Secretary, Senator Anthony Adefuye, said the decision of the northern youths was capable of causing havoc.

He said YUF was however, happy that the Arewa Consultative Forum denounced the position of the northern youths. He said what the country needed at this point was peace and unity.

Adefuye noted that the conduct of the northern youth amounted to crime, adding that it was the violation of the rights of Igbo to freely live in any part of the country.

He said the matter should not be treated with kid gloves, noting that it was a breach of the constitution of the country.

Adefuye said: “The Yoruba Uinty Forum condemns this call in its entirety. It is provocative and insulting and should not be treated with kid gloves. All those behind this show of shame should be brought to book. If not quickly checked, it could plunge the country into ethnic tension.

“Every Nigerian is free to pursue his or her legitimate business devoid of any hindrance or molestation by anybody in any part of the country. We are however, happy that the ACF and other youth organisations from the north and the northern governors’ forum have condemned this irresponsible act in its entirety.”

YUF said it the security agencies should handle the reckless conduct of the northern youths.

Adefuye added: “This forum awaits the action of the security agencies to this reckless action which is a threat to national security and peaceful coexistence. This call is suspicious and in line with recent trend of arms buildup and coup rumours. We believe in the restructuring of the country as agreed to by the 2014 National Conference.”

Gaidam assures Igbos living in Yobe of peace

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has assured Igbos living in the state not to panic over comments made back some group of Arewa youths asking them to quit the region within three months.

The governor in a press release issued by his Director Press Affairs, Abudullahi Bego said Igbos shouldn’t feel intimidated by the threat, adding that the statement is unfortunate, unlawful and unwarranted.

The statement reads: “His Excellency Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has followed recent media reports indicating that some Northern youths have issued threats to Igbo people living in the North to leave this part of the country before October 1st in response to agitation for the creation of the State of Biafra by the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) organisation.

“His Excellency Governor Gaidam considers the threat against the Igbo as unfortunate, unlawful, and unwarranted.

“Like other Nigerians, the Igbos have a right that is fully guaranteed by our constitution to live in any part of the country of their choice.

“As a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural society, part of our nation’s strength lies in the diversity of its people. It is what has moved every successful nation forward.

“In Yobe State, the Igbos, like the people of other ethnicities, have lived and engaged peacefully with their neighbours.

“The Yobe State Government therefore assures them that it will not allow anyone to intimidate or threaten them and will use the full resources of law enforcement to see to that,” the statement assured.

The statement also re-emphasised Gov. Gaidam’s commitment to a peaceful Nigeria where everyone will be proud of.

“His Excellency Governor Gaidam strongly believes in a Nigeria in which all its people live peacefully with one another, a country where political disagreements are settled not through threats and violent conduct but through dialogue and give-and-take.

“His Excellency the governor reminds youths in the North and in every part of the country that as tomorrow’s leaders, they have a responsibility and a stake to contribute to the peace and stability of the nation.

“The governor also believes that political and community leaders in every part of the country have a responsibility, as well, to guide the youths to responsible conduct and to speak against violence or tendency to violence,” the statement said.

It is through peace and unity, and not division and disunity, that our dream of a better, more prosperous Nigeria will come true.

  • No need to panic over quit notice, FG reassures Nigerians

No need to panic over quit notice, FG reassures Nigerians

The Federal Government again assured Nigerians not to panic over the quit notice issued to some Nigerians living outside their state of origin.

Some Arewa youths had recently given Igbos residing in the North ultimatum to leave the region on or before October 1st.

The youths claimed that they were reacting to the sit at home order on the 30th May by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said that all Nigerians are free to live anywhere in the country.

According to him, the Federal Government is on top of the situation.

He said that the series of consultation meetings the Acting President is holding is to calm down the situation and to reassure all Nigerians of their safety anywhere in the country.

He said: “We want to make comments on what is agitating the minds of Nigerians, that is the call for people from certain parts of the country to relocate to their region, generally very disquieting voices.

“We just want to assure Nigerians that the federal government is on top of the matter and that yesterday the Acting President addressed leaders from the northern part of the country. At 4 p.m today (Wednesday) he is going to address leaders from the South Eastern part of the country. On Friday he is going to address south eastern traditional rulers and leaders of thoughts. On the 22nd of June there is going to be a meeting of all the groups that is, traditional rulers, religious leaders and leaders of thoughts from both the South East and North part of Nigeria.

“The idea is not just to assure Nigerians that we are doing something about it but also to give comfort to all Nigerians that this matter is completely under control.

“To assure Nigerians that any Nigerian anywhere is save, the security authorities are completely on top of the matter and that they will deal decisively with any group of people whose conduct that is believed is going to create instability in the country.

“So there is no need for anybody to panic, there is no need for anybody to move from any part of the country. The security agencies are on top of the matter and there is no reason for anybody to panic,” he added.

On why the two newly confirmed Ministerial nominees by the Senate are yet to be sworn-in, he said “I’m not sure whether we’ve had the communication from National Assembly. But what I will do is that I will probably ask from the Acting President or the liaison officer then I will come and give you feedback.”

Hate speeches: Okorocha cautions Arewa youths, pro-Biafra groups

    …Says call for secession nonsensical

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Tuesday cautioned Arewa youths and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for spreading hate and inciting speeches that is capable of causing disaffection among the various ethnic groups in the country.

The Imo state Governor, also warned those hoping to benefit from the current agitations by the different separatist groups across the country to jettison such ambitions and work for the unity of the country instead, adding that the secessionist calls “is an ill wind that will blow no one any good”.

Governor Okorocha who was reacting to the quit notice served on the Igbo living in North by the Arewa youths and consequent reactions by pro-Biafra groups, while briefing journalists at the Government House, stated that the so called sit-at-home order by IPOB, which may have triggered the controversial quit notice, was not observed by the Igbo as generally believed.

According to him, “we never supported the sit-at-home as believed. What happened was that the sit-at-home order came a day after the May 29 public holiday and knowing our people who also love to extend their holiday over any slightest opportunity decided to stay at home for one extra day. Then most of the traders closed their shops for fear of hoodlums who may want to take advantage of the situation to loot their goods”.

He continued that, “these secessionist agitations are sponsored for personal aggrandizement. At a point, it was believed that the Yoruba got the presidency because of the agitations of the Oduduwa youths, while it was also believed that former President Goodluck Jonathan, became President as a result of the agitations of the Niger Delta militants. So people think that the Igbo presidency can be achieved through IPOB and MASSOB agitations.

“These agitations are nonsensical and I condemn it in its entirety. We should not be talking about another state within a sovereign state, all we need to do instead of talking about Biafra and MASSOB is to push for the economic emancipation of the Southeast. I know what they will expect me to do as a Governor, is to encourage the Biafra agitation and ask our people to prepare for war. But I will never do such thing. I will never support any call to divide Nigeria.

“What we should not forget is that the Igbo paid the greatest sacrifice for the unity of this country. The Igbo has the highest investments across the country. The Igbo developed Lagos and other parts of the country and that makes them the highest investors in the Nigeria project”.

The visibly agitated Governor, however blamed Nigerian leaders for the growing spread of hatred among youths across the country, “we have failed as leaders to instill love in our children. It is about time we took responsibility as leaders to end this threat to our unity. We should not transfer this hatred to the next generation”.

He also appealed to Ndigbo to have a rethink about the agitation to secede.

  • Arewa youths’ eviction notice draws flaks

The  quit notice served by some pro-North youth groups on Southeast indigenes living in the North is drawing more flaks. Nigerians are calling on law enforcers to rein in those behind the provocative ultimatum, report MIKE ODIEGWU, ERNEST NWOKOLO, UGOCHUKWU UGOJI-EKE, TONY AKOWE, ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE and OLUGBENGA ADANIKIN.

REACTIONS yesterday trailed the three-month quit notice served on South easterners resident in the North by a coalition of northern youth groups on Tuesday.

Many of those who reacted to the ultimatum knocked the organisations for making the provocative and unpatriotic call that could breach harmonious and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

They urged relevant authorities, including law enforcement agents to act fast.

In Kaduna, Governor Nasir El-Rufai ordered the arrest of leaders of the youth organisations for declaring the Igbo unwanted in the North.

Two wrongs can’t make a right

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) called for caution against unguarded statements capable of breaching the peace and unity of the country.

Reacting in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, the ACF said: “The attention of the ACF has been drawn to the press statement issued by a Coalition of Northern Youth groups calling on Igbos currently residing in the Northern part of Nigeria to relocate to the East within three (3) months, while Northerners in the East should do likewise.

“This position of the groups was as a result of the persistent agitations of some members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra, which have continued to threaten the unity, peace and corporate existence of Nigeria.

“ACF wishes to draw the attention of all concerned, to note, that our democratic system of government which is anchored on law guarantees free movement of all Nigerians to any part of the country and to also pursue their legitimate livelihood devoid of any hindrance or molestation by any group or individuals.

“Furthermore, the system allows settlement of all grievances through our elected representatives in both the National and States Assemblies and the law courts. Any act to the contrary, is therefore, a breach of law and order that are not helpful.

“ACF appreciates the frustrations of the Northern Youth Groups with the activities of MASSOB and IPOB members, but would not encourage any act that is not in conformity with the law by any group or individuals which will do no one any good.

“ACF therefore, appeals for caution over unguarded utterances or statements that are capable of jeopardizing the unity, peace and corporate existence of Nigeria.”

    Youths ignorant of war consequeces

North’s elder statesman and Second Republic lawmaker Senator Walid Jibrin describes the northern youths behind the quit notice as kids who have never seen war.

Jibrin said the declaration of the youths for Igbos to leave the North before October 1 amounted to an invitation to another civil war, which according to him was uncalled for despite the MASSOB/IPOB agitations.

The senator who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman reminded the youths that seek to sack from the North helped in developing the region’s economy.

He, however, called on northern traditional rulers and elders to as a matter of urgency come out to condemn the groups’ statement by calling them to order and call for peace.

Jibrin said: “Nigeria is a sovereign state and every citizen has the right to live in any part of the country. The Igbo’s are very broad-minded people who have helped to develop the economy of the North. There is no village, ward or town where you will not find an Igbo race living peacefully with the people. Igbo’s and the Southeast people have always remain the allies of the North since independence.

  • Arewa youths seek security at seaports

Arewa youths at Seme border, Badagry, Lagos have urged the Federal Government to secure the nations seaports with a view to curb criminal activities at the points of the country’s sources of revenue.

The youth, under the umbrella of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), made the call in a statement signed by their chapter Chairman, Comrade Adamu Sambo, in which they lament the negligence of the government on the seaports.

The group cited example of the recent discovery of 661 pump action riffles in a consignment which the landing Bill claimed contained steel door.

They reminded the security agencies that their responsibilities include confirmation and physical examination of any items before the signing of any kind of goods out of the port.

The forum hailed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Controller-General (CG) for his continuous cleansing of the customs.

They urged him to leave no stone unturned in his fight against corruption.

The AYCF regretted that, seaports that are supposed to be a source of great revenue generation avenues has become a source of threat to the nation’s peace in terms of security.

“Since the closure of land borders, another question begging for an answer is that has the government been able to ascertained maximum revenue generation at the sea ports since when the land borders have been closed?! The federal government should therefore go back to her record to see how much had been lost since the closure of the land borders,” the forum said.

  • Arewa youths to Avengers: stop bombings, pipeline vandalism

The Northern Forum of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) yesterday urged the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to stop bombing and vandalising oil and gas pipelines and other economic installations in the region.

The forum’s Chairman Abubakar Balewa spoke on the need for peace to reign in the region to enable development take place.

Balewa was reading a drafted copy of NYCN’s communiqué, which the forum released at the end of last weekend’s meeting of the youth council from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Kaduna.

The communiqué said: “…The forum supports President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war and urges the government to remain resolute, despite distractions.

“The forum commends the Federal Government for its economic diversification drives as it relates to Agriculture, solid minerals development, exploration of oil in the North, implementation of the Hyppadec Bill and the dredging of River Niger and Benue.”

The forum praised the National Assembly for the passage of the Bill for the Establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps.

It noted that this would reduce youth unemployment in the land.

The forum said it resolved to support the forthcoming unity congress of the NYCN on August 25 to 27, calling all stakeholders, particularly the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, to ensure the success of the congress.

  • Arewa youths write ACF, North’s elders

The Arewa Youth Development Foundation (AYDF) has written to the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to take a position by reacting to ‘the humiliation of northerners in the East by the Igbo and their governments’.

The group said it would, in a few days, meet all youth groups in Kano to review the actions of its leaders as against its previous communication on the agitation by the Igbo.

This was contained in a joint statement by Aliyu Usman of AYDF, Aminu Adams of the Arewa Citizens Action for Change (ACAC), Bridget Cantiop Yahya  of the Northern Emancipation Network (NEN), Comrade Yusuf Muhammed of Arewa Students Forum (ASF) and Terkular J. Bishama of Arewa Youth Vanguard (AYV).

The statement added that the meeting would sustain protests to halt plans to sever the present federal arrangement by asking Igbo not to relocate from the North or northerners from the East.

It said the action was necessitated by MASSOB’s secession threats, which is backed by renewed humiliation of northerners in the Southeast and statements declaring Northerners, residents or passing by the East, as persona non grata.

“On July 16 2014, a coalition of over 50 northern youth groups, under the aegis of Arewa Youth Development Foundation, matched to the palace of the Emir of Kano and submitted a position paper in reaction to the humiliation of northerners in the east by the Igbo Biafras and their governments.

“The groups issued a two-week ultimatum for all northerners residing in any part of the east to return home and for Igbos residing in any part of the north to act likewise.

“In response to that protest, the then National Security Council met and issued a directive for the suspension of the purported action against northerners in the east and appealed to us to suspend our action” the statement said.
