Arewa Think Tank hails Ribadu over comments on new terrorist group

A notable Northern group, Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has commended the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu over his pronouncement that the security agencies will soon flush out Lukarawa, the terrorist group that recently emerged in the North-West region.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had penultimate week confirmed the terror group’s presence in Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Arewa Think Tank was excited over Ribadu’s stance that ‘nobody dares Tinubu and wins’, particularly over security challenges across the country.

In a statement at the weekend by the Convener of ATT, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu said members of the group watched with keen interest when Ribadu spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the 2024 comptroller-general of customs conference.

“From that day we realised that the new terror group came from the Niger Republic after the coup that led to the breakdown of military cooperation between Nigeria and the neighbouring country.

“We are excited that the NSA said the Boko Haram terrorists have been decimated and are on the run, moving to neighbouring countries. We noted that Ribadu attributed the feat to what he called Tinubu gains, and added that hundreds of bandits are being killed daily by security operatives.

“We listened to Ribadu saying, ‘We are beginning to see the gains—what we call Tinubu gains. Hundreds of bandits are killed every day. Tinubu gains. We move everywhere in our country today free of fear.

“Arewa Think Tank is urging all security agencies to ensure that this so-called Lakurawa or whatever they call themselves are making a mistake because as Ribadu rightly pointed out nobody ever dares Tinubu and wins. They have come at the wrong time; nobody has ever defeated Tinubu.

“ATT is indeed overwhelming about the reassuring comments by the NSA that security agencies will kick the so-called Lakurawa out of our country. This is Nigeria of 2024, and we can say that very soon critics will be quiet one after the other. Things will change in our country for the better.

“It is gratifying to note that our security agencies are on top of the game as Boko Haram, which has been ravaging our country, is now on the run. Its members are now moving to other neighbouring countries because Nigeria is no longer conducive to their operations.

“We also noted that the conference aligned with the government’s vision of fostering strategic partnerships and collaborative approaches to governance and economic management,” the statement read.

It also commended Ribadu over comments on the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu which according to him has ended smuggling across the country as only a few Nigerians were benefiting from the policy.

“We agreed with the NSA that Nigeria was only subsidising neighbouring countries as a result of smuggling that was going on in the border communities. We are satisfied with his explanation that the subsidy that all of us are talking about that has brought NNPC to its knees was only serving neighbouring countries and not even Nigerians, that Nigeria was subsidising Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Ghana and the smart Nigerians who called themselves oil marketers”.

“We also want to use this opportunity to commend the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, for revealing that the service has hit its 2024 revenue generation target of N5.07 trillion.

“According to him, as of November 12, 2024, the service has been able to collect N5.07 trillion, going ahead to add with over a month remaining for the year to end, the Service is estimated to surpass its revenue target by 10 percent.

“We at Arewa Think Tank are happy for this exceptional performance by the Customs boss, and we urge him to maintain the tempo of revenue collection and trade facilitation in our dear country,” ATT said.

Arewa Think Tank lauds Sani on CNG bus launch, wage increase

The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has praised Kaduna State governor, Senator Uba Sani, for launching a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to provide free transportation for state civil servants, calling it a commendable initiative.

ATT also welcomed the governor’s approval of a new minimum wage of N72,000 for state workers, which took effect this month.

In a statement by the ATT Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, he noted that “Governor Uba Sani’s approval of a new minimum wage and introduction of free transport for civil servants is highly commendable, reflecting his commitment to workers’ welfare and the betterment of the vulnerable in Kaduna State.”

Yakubu applauded the launch of the free transport scheme, which includes 100 CNG buses to ease commuting for civil servants, adding that this initiative would help alleviate workers’ burdens and boost productivity.

He encouraged cooperation between the organised labor and the state government to ensure effective management of the scheme.

The ATT, however, urged Governor Sani to continue advancing policies that uplift the underserved, and called on the people of Kaduna State to support these efforts to make the state a model of social welfare.

Arewa group tackles Clark over letter against 27 Rivers lawmakers

Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence has tackled the elder statesman and bigwig of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Edwin Clark, for condemning the defensive actions of the party’s national secretariat in favour of the 27 PDP lawmakers of Rivers State.

The group in a statement by its national chairman and the Abuja chapter chairman, Hon. Haruna Bature and Hon. Ogah Okpanachi, said Chef Clark as an elder, ought to play an advisory and mediatory role in the political crisis in Rivers, rather than taking sides with the sitting Governor.

It, however, called on Chief Clark to retract his letter, apologise to the parties mentioned in the letter and assume the proper fatherly and mediatory role expected of him as an Elder Statesman.

The statement said: “Attention of the Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence has been drawn to the letter written by Chief Edwin K. Clark condemning the defensive actions of the Acting National Chairman and National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alh. Illya Damagun and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu in favour of the 27 PDP Lawmakers of Rivers State.

“We are greatly shocked and disappointed by the toxic hatred and bitterness expressed in the letter against the defensive actions of Alh. Illya Damagun and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu and the FCT Minister, Chief Barr. E.N. Wike in favour of the 27 PDP lawmakers of Rivers state.

“We wonder why the elder statesman, Chief Edwin K. Clark who is supposed to be a mediator between the two factions suddenly lost touch with his status, and role and threw caution to the wind by taking sides with Governor Sim. Fubara to sacrifice the 27 PDP lawmakers forgetting that all the parties in this crisis are bonafide and prominent indigenes of Rivers State whose interests must never be sacrificed for another.

“The legal technicalities of the alleged defection of the 27 PDP Lawmakers of Rivers State have been severally challenged and judgments passed in favour of the 27 PDP Rivers state lawmakers at the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal, and therefore expected the elder statesman to have chosen the path of peaceful mediation and reconciliation to give proper closure to the issues in contention.

“We categorically wish to state that the actions of Alh. Illya Damagun and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu properly informed the Court that the position of the party is to give all the parties in Rivers State Crisis fairgrounds to litigate their matters in court without fear or favour and should never be condemned for such actions.

“Finally, we wish to remind Chief Edwin K. Clark that all the parties in the Rivers State crisis especially the FCT Minister, Chief Barr. E.N. Wike has fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which cannot and must never be compromised or sacrificed for any petty personal or regional sentiments.

“We are therefore calling on Chief Edwin K. Clark to immediately retract the letter, apologise to the parties mentioned in the letter, and assume the proper fatherly and mediatory role expected of him as an Elder Statesman,” the statement read.

Protest: Arewa youths beg Tinubu not to relocate NCC-DIP from Kano

Northern Youth Assembly -the Majalisar Matasan Arewa, has kicked against calls for the relocation of the Digital Industrial Park (DIP) of the the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) from Kano to Kebbi, following the attack and vandalism of the facility by hoodlums during the nationwide protest.

A statement by the Arewa Youth Assembly
by Dr. Aliyu Mohammed, President, and Dr. Hafiz Garba, Secretary respectively, dismissed the purported move as a “calculated deception meant to mislead the good people of Kebbi state.”

The equipment looted at the DIP of the NCC office, located along State Road, Kano, which is to be commissioned on Wednesday August 7, are worth billions of naira.

The statement by the Pan Arewa Regional Assembly stressed that “While we acknowledge the call for increased investment in Kebbi State as valid and a welcome development, it is however crucial to consider several factors before thinking on some significant projects undertaking”.

The group posited that “Relocating the park to any other State would not only increase additional costs but also cause delays, hindering the region’s progress in digital innovation. It is more realistic to make renovation on the existing foundation in Kano, than starting the project all over again somewhere “.

It explained: “It is important to note, necessary infrastructure for the striving of investments such as Digital Innovation Park is critical, and therefore situating the facility in Kano was not a coincidence but an action which was carefully well thought and executed.”

The Arewa Youth Assembly noted that Kano State holds historical and strategic importance as a commercial hub of Northern Nigeria. “With established transportation networks, including a fully functional international airport and major road links, Kano State is therefore well-positioned to host the Digital Innovation Park.”

The Group further maintained that “The location of Kano State, ensures accessibility and connectivity amongst all other States of the North West, which are critical to a successful operationalisation of such an initiative.”

The Arewa Youth Assembly therefore appealed to “President Bola Tinubu to direct the commencement of renovation work, at the NCC Digital Centre in Kano. Kano State deserves to have this project, considering its population size, electoral value and strategic location. “

The statement by the largest Assembly of Youth group in the north read in parts : “The attention of Northern Youth Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa)has been drawn to the recent request by some hired group of individuals, urging the president to relocate Kano’s Digital Innovation Park to Kebbi State, a development which has degenerated to conversation on regional development and equity amongst Northern Nigerian States “

“Although, it is essential to ensure that all States in Nigeria, including those from the Northern Nigeria receive equitable development opportunities, Kano’s existing infrastructure, human resources, and strategic location make it an ideal hub for a project such as the Digital Innovation Park.

“This facility is strategically situated, and can effectively serve the entire northern region, fostering and supporting innovation and economic growth, not only for Kano State but as well for the entire Northern States.

“Kebbi State, is equally in the position to benefit from some laudable projects which are so deserving and peculiar to the State, such as investment in rice farming, which the previous Government provided so much to the State more than other States in the North. “

“It is against this backdrop, that we are of the opinion that, thinking about relocating the NCC Digital Centre from Kano to Kebbi State, would be a wrong decision to take.“

Arewa youths commend FERMA’s efforts in road repair

Arewa youths merger group on Friday, May 31, expressed its gratitude to the managing director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Chukwuemeka Agbasi for the agency’s proactive measures taken to address the deteriorating condition of federal roads across the country, especially in the northern region.

In a statement released to the press in Kano on Friday, the group’s leader, Mujahid Zaitawa, lauded the planned interventions by FERMA to fill potholes and repair failed portions of roads, emphasising the positive impact these efforts will have on the safety and efficiency of transportation for millions of Nigerians.

Zaitawa stated: “The maintenance and rehabilitation of our road networks are critical, especially now that we are entering the rainy season. We acknowledge that this transformation is possible because of the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu on the road network in the country.

Others include Rehabilitation of Funtua-Dayi-Yashe-Kano State Border Road in Katsina State, Zaria-Gusau-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi Road in Katsina State, Construction of Kankara-Gurbi Road in Katsina State, Rehabilitation of Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Kontagora-Makera Road, in Sokoto/Kebbi/Niger States, Replacement of substandard bridges along Gusau-Sokoto Road in Zamfara State, among others.

The group stated: “These projects are part of a broader strategy by FERMA to ensure the nation’s roadways are in good condition, thereby enhancing connectivity and supporting economic activities.

“We are particularly pleased with the focus on the northern region, where many roads are in dire need of repair. This initiative from Engr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi will not only improve transportation but will also contribute to the overall development of our region.”

  • ACF seeks urgent action to prevent social chaos in Nigeria

ACF seeks urgent action to prevent social chaos in Nigeria

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Tuesday, May 21, rose from its meeting in Kaduna, saying that, there is looming social chaos in Nigeria.

The committee highlighted the challenges citizens are facing, including rampant inflation, unemployment, declining standards of living, and escalating incidents of insurgency, terrorism, and banditry.

The well-attended NEC meeting, chaired by Mike Mamman Osman (SAN), underscored the increasingly tough and challenging times for the average Nigerian.

In the communique issued at the end of the NEC meeting and read to journalists by its national publicity secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, ACF argued that the removal of subsidies from petroleum products, floating of the Naira, and astronomical hike in the cost of poorly supplied electricity were responsible for the hardship facing Nigerians.

The Forum though commended the federal and state governments for their efforts towards tackling the identified problems, it stated categorically that, the public policy response to the problems remains weak and ineffective.

While it also noted that, there are widening regional disparities in social demographic factors, such as access to education, health public, infrastructure, economic inclusion, political participation, and living conditions, ACF called for urgent action and definitive attention, by the government at all levels, to confront a rapid decline in living conditions of Nigerians.

The communique read that; “The National Executive Committee of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) rose from a well-attended meeting Tuesday, 21st May, 2024; preceded by a meeting of the organisations National Working Committee (NWC) which earlier held on Monday, 20th May, 2024.

“The Meeting undertook a comprehensive review of ACFs activities, programmes, projects, finances, state chapters of ACF and miscellaneous related issues as well as take a general look at the state of the nation and polity.

“Arising from the meeting, NEC noted with satisfaction the unfolding image of a rejuvenated ACF, under a new leadership, that is steadily re-inserting and re-asserting itself as a credible, active, responsive and visible pan-Northern political but non-partisan, pan-ethnic non-religious organisation, dedicated to articulating and defending the interests of the peoples of the Northern states of Nigeria, through consultation, research, and advocacy.

“On the national front, and specifically applicable to the Northern states, NEC notes that the times continue to be tough and challenging for the average citizen who is daily confronted with runaway inflation, unemployment, and rapid deterioration in standards of living, all in the face of incidents of insurgency, terrorism, and banditry, etc. These problems have remained dire, acute (or even chronic in some places) in the North in particular.

“The immediate causes of the problems have been policies put in place by the government over the past months, including but not confined to removal of subsidies from the prices of petroleum products, floating of the Naira, and astronomical hike in the cost of poorly supplied electricity, increasing tariffs and taxes against the seemingly insensitive profligacy in spendings by public officials, to list a few.

“NEC acknowledges the efforts of the Federal, state and, to a little extent, local governments have been making efforts to tackle the problems identified above. However, overall, it is undeniable, perhaps due to the quantum and widening dimension of the problems, that public policy response to the problems remains weak and ineffective at best.

“NEC noted with grave concern, regrets and decries the continuing, deterioration or escalation in the spate of insecurity-related incidents in all three (3) geo-political zones under which the northern states are grouped. These problems reflect on the region’s cascading political, social, and economic challenges.

“NEC reiterates ACFs earlier expressed the position that the emergent protracted dimension of these problems, if untamed, are harbingers of citizens’ discontent, and social chaos.

“Equally worrisome to NEC is the widening regional disparities in social demographic factors, such as access to education, health public, infrastructure, economic inclusion, political participation, living conditions, etc.

“Governments must move to curb such disparities so as to ensure that Nigeria does not become two-states-in-one. Factors that unify, rather than divide citizens along any lines, should attract the attention of all concerned, government and citizens alike.

“As it has severally reiterated in recent public outings, ACF calls for urgent action and definitive attention, by the government at all levels, to confront the rapid decline in living conditions of citizens.

“The imposition of new taxes and levies is becoming increasingly too burdensome for ordinary Nigerians. The need for a rollout of public policy programmes and projects aimed at addressing low purchasing power challenges is indicated.

“ACF calls on citizens to rally around government and offer prayers for God Almighty’s intervention in our various tribulations such as will translate into a new, prosperous Nigeria where justice, equity, love, righteousness and hope emerge to replace the current despair and hopelessness.

“To inspire the spirit of needed sacrifices by citizens, NEC calls on public functionaries to shun profligacy and recklessness in spending public funds.

“As always, NEC unequivocally supports Nigerian security agents in their determined efforts to rid the country of criminality, insecurity and instability and pray that they very soon enough prevail over insurgents, terrorists and bandits. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” ACF said.

  • ACF lauds FG’s denial of establishing foreign military bases in Nigeria

ACF lauds FG’s denial of establishing foreign military bases in Nigeria

The mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has welcomed the statement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosing that the federal government has no plans to allow foreign military bases in Nigeria.

The forum, in a statement issued by its national publicity secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad Baba, and made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday said: “The FGN must be appreciated for taking such a bold and reassuring stance.

“For ACF, the development represents a victory for all imminently patriotic Nigerians who signalled readiness to campaign against the “rumoured” plans to host US and French military bases in Nigeria following their rejection in Republics of Burkina Faso and Niger.”

ACF remarked its disappointment with an earlier statement, “credited to a supposedly non-governmental organisation concerned with promoting human rights, the Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA), supporting the possible establishment of American (US) and French military bases in Nigeria.

“ACF finds such support patently shocking, shortsighted, and against everything Nigeria stands for at the moment. We are an independent, sovereign African country in uncompromising solidarity with all sister Africans, especially ECOWAS states in the struggles against all vestiges of the intolerable stranglehold of colonialism and neo-colonialism that have for far too long held down Africa in conditions of underdevelopment.

Read Also: No room for foreign military base, Fed Govt affirms

“Enough is known of experiences of countries like Burkina Faso and Niger that have hosted foreign military bases for years. Such bases have to date served only the interests of the advanced countries.

“Wherever they are located, the foreign military outposts operate outside of the control and in utter disregard for the national laws of their hosts, respecting only their own convenient rules. That sister African countries will, on the basis of their experience with the foreign military units, reject their presence is enough reason to dissuade Nigeria from even contemplating hosting them.

“There is just no sense that such bases as rejected by sister ECOWAS would be welcomed by any next-door neighbour.

“HURIWA ought to realize that the presence of the bases has undeniably failed to result in any demonstrable decline in the activities of terrorist and insurgent groups that have been wrecking political, economic, and social conditions in the sister countries.

“For Nigeria, it is inescapable that whatever is unhelpful and/or detrimental to the interests of African countries cannot be good for us, due to shared destinies in unbroken historical, socio-cultural, economic and political ties which predated and antedates the artificial Balkanisation of our societies under European colonial control.

“Africans will forever decry the imposition of ridiculous “international” boundaries, which often cut across the very heart of communities, as systematised at the infamous 1884/1885 Berlin Conference at which no African country participated.

“It is thus instructive that the desire to establish the military bases emanates, not from African countries, but from the foreign powers themselves, and it is as if the Berlin Conference is being updated and re-enacted now, in the 21st Century.

“HURIWA is being quixotic and perhaps delusional in thinking that military and civilian personnel in the bases will respect Nigeria’s sovereignty or help us fight terrorism and insurgency. It is to ask where (and why now) have the foreign forces been all the while with our body counts in thousands, and recorded disrupted livelihoods, internally displaced populations, etc.

“It is also disappointing that HURIWA would seek to trivialise the patriotic call against foreign military bases as emanating from some “Northern” leaders, as if HURIWA’S condemnation is itself, by equal measure, a “southern” Nigerian agenda!

“Clearly, the terrorism and banditry problem in Nigeria has gone beyond the prism of “killer herdsmen” and Boko Haram, as HURIWA would have it, and looking at the problem from such a simplistic and reductionist perspective is unhelpful in the fight against terrorism.

“Our security forces know this only too well. No one should be lulled into complacency or think that anybody but ourselves can solve the problem. Nigeria should not be tempted by Trojan Horse promises from foreign interests that had until now at best remained benignly neglectful or uninterested in our insecurity woes.”

  • NEF actors placing personal gains above Nigeria’s unity, survival- Arewa Forum

NEF actors placing personal gains above Nigeria’s unity, survival- Arewa Forum

Group, Arewa Progressive Forum (APFO) has disowned Northern Elders Forum (NEF) over a comment on President Bola Tinubu’s presidential approach to security in the region, saying the actors behind NEF’s outburst were more interested in personal gains than unity and survival of Nigeria.

The group while stating that the elders’ position was not a collective decision of sons and daughters of the North, noted that Tinubu has so far shown interest in addressing the security challenges in the country and North in particular by appointing credible sons of the region into sensitive security positions in addition to ongoing daily military and police operations in the North.

The Nation recalled that the Northern Elders Forum had claimed to have regretted its decision to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections, with a threat that the north had learned its lesson over heightened security challenges under the Tinubu-led administration.

Addressing the newsmen on the development, the national secretary of the forum, Magaji Abbas Danbatta regretted that the recent outbursts of the Elders forum did not represent the Northern agenda for peace and national unity of the country which is not negotiable.

He noted that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of State Defence, Bello Matawalle, have been up and doing in their efforts to ensure peace returns to the north when they have the opportunity to serve under Tinubu’s led presidency.

“To us, President Tinubu’s approach to the issues of security in the North so far, especially Northwest is one of the best compared to his immediate predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari’s approach.

“Northern elders should be seen as mediators or opinion shapers on national unity, cohesion, and progress without regional bias. This is key because Nigeria’s unity can’t be negotiated on the page of newspapers”, he added.

The group further supported the Minister of State Defence, over his mature response to the NEF outbursts against President Tinubu, saying, the people behind the claim were more interested in personal gains than the unity and survival of Nigeria.

The group however advised the concerned elders to leverage one of their members, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed who is the Special Adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima on political matters to facilitate a meeting with the presidency on better to go about their interests rather than through the media.
