  • ACF seeks punishment for Arewa youths coalition

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has urged the Federal Government to punish members of the Arewa Youth Coalition for making a hate speech.

Speaking in its Eid-el-fitr message, signed by National Publicity Secretary Malam Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, the ACF said any plan to disunite the country or cause chaos should be resisted and dealt with accordingly.

The ACF urged the Muslim faithful to adhere to prayers and acts of love, tolerance, unity and others good deeds carried out during the Ramadan fasting.

The group said: “ACF commends the Federal Government for its proactive approach that douse the tension created by the Biafra agitators and the subsequent quit notice issued by the Northern Youth groups. The consultations held with the various group leaders and other stakeholders from the North and South East for the purpose of promoting unity and peaceful coexistence was appropriate and timely.

“ACF has observed with concern that the hate messages and actions from the agitators have continued unabated. ACF therefore, urges the Federal Government to be firm and assert its authority, and ensure that the law takes its full course on those who consider themselves above the law.

“The Ramadan period was an opportunity for Muslims all over world to fast, pray, and devote themselves to the reading and teachings of the Holy Quran, practices and sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It was also an occasion for Muslims to reaffirm their belief in the oneness of Almighty Allah (SWT) and the ideals of Islam.

“Muslims also prayed fervently for peace, unity and understanding among the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians in general. They also helped the less privileged and the poor in view of the prevailing economic hardships and other inequalities among the citizenry.

“ACF therefore wishes the Muslim Ummah a peaceful and Happy Eid-el-Fitr celebration. It equally urges Nigerians to devote themselves to prayers for unity, peaceful coexistence and especially to the sick and our dear President Muhammadu Buhari. ACF wishes President Buhari quick recovery and early return home to continue with the daunting task of governance.

“In the spirit of the season, ACF calls on Nigerians to embrace peaceful dialogue as the most civilised means to address grievances, rather than engage in hate speeches, threats and intimidation, that have unfortunately been trying to polarize us along tribal, regional and religious divides.”

  • Quit order: Southern leaders seek sanctions against Arewa youths

Some southern leaders yesterday urged the Federal Government to address the quit order issued by some Arewa youth groups to the Igbo to vacate the North.

They spoke after a meeting at Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s house in Lagos. It was attended by leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by its President Nnia Nwodo, Gen Alani Akinrinade, Chief Albert Horsefall and former Chief of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ikiweý (rtd).

The leaders said the ultimatum was been handled with levity, adding that it was a threat to Southern Nigeria.

The communique of the meeting read by Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said: “We the people of Southern Nigeria, comprising Southeast, Southwest and Southsouth of Nigeria, decided to come together to forge a common and formidable front and sustenance of sound principles of national development ,equity, fairness, social justice and political emancipation.

“The meeting held against the backdrop of the ultimatum given by the Arewa youths to the people of Southeast and by extension to all southerners to vacate the North by October 1, 2017 and the refusal of the Nigerian state to activate the law against any of them, giving us the impression that these youths are not acting on their own, but with the backing of their establishment.

“We consider the need to avert the impending danger arising from the ultimatum given by the Arewa youths.

“We agreed that there is a growing demand by our people and other Nigerians to form a stronger federation in which principles and practice of true federalism are upheld. We observe that the cry for self-determination will continue unabated and become much more stringent unless the Federal Government sincerely address the issues of restructuring of Nigeria.

“We, therefore, resolve that we reject the attempt to, reduce the current crisis in Nigeria, flowing from the unresolved nationality question to an Igbo and North affair. The meeting, therefore, insists that any further discussion on this crisis should be between the entire South and the North of Nigeria. The Southeast is advised to consider any further meeting where the Southwest and Southsouth are not involved as southern Nigeria because the issues involved affects all of us.

“We also demand that Arewa youths and their sponsors must withdraw the quit notice given to the people of the Southeast as failure to do so, will be taken as an ultimatum given to the entire Southern Nigeria to quit their region and any attack against anybody from the South, will be considered an attack against the Southern Nigeria.

“We advise the Federal Government to take seriously and live up to the primary responsibility of any government, which is to protect the lives and property of every citizen of Nigeria wherever they may reside.”

The leaders said the consistent attack by Fulani herdsmen on communities in the Southwest was heating the polity, noting that government must stem the tide.

“Now, we also resolved on the need for the restructuring of Nigeria and to uphold the principles of true federalism as agreed by the founding fathers of Nigeria and practiced effectively in the years before the first military coup in Nigeria.

“Now we also resolved on the need for the restructuring of Nigeria and to uphold the principles of true federalism as agreed by the founding fathers of Nigeria and practised effectively in the years before the military took over power in Nigeria.

“We affirm and resolve in the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference aimed at complete transformation and restructuring of our country and to build and confederate Nigeria unity through peaceful and harmonious unity, progress and genuine development.”

  • Agitations for Biafra, other secession plots unlawful, says Osinbajo

Agitations for Biafra, other secession plots unlawful, says Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday reiterated that agitations for creation of Biafra and Arewa youths’ ultimatum for Igbos to leave the North are unlawful and against the Nigerian Constitution.

He stated this  during his opening speech at a consultation meeting with traditional rulers from the South East led by Eze Udo 1 of Mgboko Ngwa Amaise in Abia State and Chairman of South East traditional rulers, Eze Eberechi Dick, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, the manner, method and objectives of the agitations are wrong.

The agitations, he said, deserve to be dealt with in accordance with the country’s constitutional provisions.

Osinbajo said that where there were grievances to be addressed, the only way to make anything right is by doing it right, instead of threatening to break the law or the country.

“As you are aware there has been agitation from some of our youths in the south east urging secession, the creation of Biafra. In apparent response young people in the north states, under the aegis  of Arewa youths have purportedly issued an ultimatum where they have said set a date for the eviction of persons from south east region who live in the northern states.

“Those agitations, the manner of those agitations, the method and objective are wrong, unlawful and the violation of the laws of Nigeria and the constitution of Nigeria. I want to repeat that both the agitations for secession and the ultimatum to leave the northern states are wrong and a violation of our constitution.

“Our constitution says in Section Two that Nigeria is one indivisible and indissoluble sovereign state to be known by the name the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“That is the law of our country. Let us not be in any doubt about the fact that the federal government is committed to ensuring that our country remains united.

“And that anyone who violates the law in the manner such as we are seeing all over the place will be met with the full force of the law.

“And the reason why it is so is because Nigeria’s unity enough blood has been spilled and many hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost. Many have paid for the unity of this country with their lives and it will be wrong of us as men and women of goodwill in this generation to toy with those sacrifices that have been made.

“This is why men of goodwill in our generation must not tolerate any tendency that drags us in the direction of yet another civil conflict.

“But we must be sensitive to the reasons why there are agitations by the various young men across the various zones of this country. Many have to do with perceived marginalization, some have argued safety in the different zones have been compromised. But I want to say the only way to make things right is to do things right. And it will be wrong of us to approach even our grievances by threatening to disobey the laws or by threatening the integrity of our nation,” he said

He assured that the Federal Government is committed to listening to all the reasons, the various suggestions and the various agitations in order to ensure that justice is done to all persons.

The meeting was a continuation of Osinbajo’s consultations with leaders of thoughts and traditional rulers from the North and South Eastern regions of the country, following the escalation of ethnic tensions occasioned by the agitation for Biafra and the vacation order issued by Northern youths for Igbo to quit the North.

Present at the meeting were Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Da-Allah

Others include Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Staff Abayomi Olonoshakin, Inspector General of Police,  Ibrahim Idris, National Security Adviser, Babangana Mongonu, Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, and other top government officials.

  • Igbo, Arewa face-off: Niger Delta militants demand return of oil blocs held by Northerners

Igbo, Arewa face-off: Niger Delta militants demand return of oil blocs held by Northerners

A coalition of Niger Delta militants is demanding from the Federal Government the return of all oil blocs controlled by Northerners to the people of the oil producing region.

The demand is in retaliation for the order issued by Northern youth organizations to the Igbo in the north to quit the region by October 1.

The Niger Delta Watchdogs, Niger Delta Volunteers, Niger Delta Peoples Fighters, Niger Delta Warriors, Bakassi Freedom Fighters, Niger Delta Movement for Justice, Niger Delta Fighters Network and Niger Delta Freedom Mandate, said in a joint statement yesterday that they also intend to declare an independent Niger Delta on October 1 with a view to freeing their people from what they called northern enslavement.

The communiqué was signed by ‘General’ John Duku (Niger Delta Watchdogs and Convener: Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators), ‘General’ Ekpo Ekpo (Niger Delta Volunteers), ‘General’ Osarolor Nedam (Niger Delta Warriors), and ‘Major-Gen.’ Henry Okon Etete (Niger Delta Peoples Fighters).

Others are ‘Major-Gen.’ Asukwo Henshaw (Bakassi Freedom Fighters), ‘Major-Gen.’ Ibinabo Horsfall (Niger Delta Movement for Justice), ‘Major-Gen.’ Duke Emmanson (Niger Delta Fighters Network), and ‘Major-Gen.’ Inibeghe Adams (Niger Delta Freedom Mandate).

Besides, they warned all the companies operating such oil blocs to quit within three months.

The group said: “A coalition of the Niger Delta militants met today in Port Harcourt to review the recent call by the Arewa Youths groups that the Ndigbo should vacate all the Northern states within three months.

“We see the declaration by Arewa Youths as a declaration which the northern elders, leaders, political elite, security heads from the North and governors were fully aware of .

“We demand 100 per cent control of our resources. We demand that the Federal Government should hand over all oil blocs owned by northerners to Niger Delta indigenes. All the companies operating in such oil blocs/wells should vacate within three months.

“The Federal Government should immediately relocate NNPC and all the offices that have to do with oil/gas sector back to Niger Delta states and immediately replace the Group Managing Director with an indigene of Niger Delta.

“All northern indigenes working in NNPC and any other board that has anything to do with oil/gas should be sacked with immediate effect.

“We demand an independent and sovereign Republic of Niger Delta. We are tired of living with the North under Nigeria. We are tired of the President’s sentiments against  the Niger Delta people.

“The President can have time to receive the Chibok girls but could not have time to meet with the representatives of the Niger Delta agitators. Our money has been used to fund Boko Haram, a problem created by the Northerners in order to use it as conduit pipe to siphon the resources of Niger Delta.

“On October 1, 2017 we shall declare our independence come rain, come shine. We shall take our destiny in our hands and free ourselves from the slavery of the North as they are tired of one Nigeria.”

  • Arewa youths berate northern governors for not protecting Buhari

The  Northern Youth Leaders Forum have berated the 19 northern governors for not doing enough to protect President Muhammadu Buhari in his moment of trial.
The youths in a statement by their national  president  Alhaji Adamu Mahmuda, said they observed that the president has been left on his own since the controversy on the issues surrounding his health and well being began.

The youths said instead of informing their citizens about the true situation surrounding the  president, the governors have engaged themselves in schemes and underhand deals meant to favour them to emerge as vice president in the event that Buhari does not complete his tenure.

The youths describe this development as selfish, callous and insensitive saying this has exposed the  governor as people who do not mean well for the region but themselves alone.

The group said apart from Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano who organised a prayer session for the president some months back, the rest were busy either inviting party leaders to their states so as to intensity lobby  for their vice presidential bids or busy holding clandestine meetings to serve their interest.

The Arewa youths said it is  condemnable ‎ that while series of meetings are being held in Kaduna and other states on the issue , none  of the northern governors either individually or collectively has deemed it fit to publicly douse the tension over the matter.

It said though it is within the governors given rights to aspire for whatever positions, they should remember  that most of them would not have won their elections if not for the strategy of identifying with the overwhelming influence of Buhari.

The group said for some of  the governors to try to pretend the occasion does not call for their open  support and ‎ agitation is an act of deception that has not gone down well with the populace.

“The northern governors who won their elections for merely identifying with Buhari have all of a sudden gone asleep not wanting to be drawn into any issue surrounding the health of the president.

“After benefiting from his campaign and support through the provision of bail outs and other handouts for them to run their states, we find it extremely uncharitable for the governors to have gone so cold when the occasion demands they should rise up and reassure citizens in their states that there is no cause for alarm and that the president is only taking a rest.

“Nobody is fooled by their ‘see no evil, hear no evil posture’ which is deliberate so as not to make them appear too supportive of the president for fear that that might make them lose out in case the president decides not to continue. But this  is wicked, selfish and insensitive,” the group stated. ‎

  • How Rivers Niger, Benue can develop North – Experts

How Rivers Niger, Benue can develop North – Experts

A Consortium of concerned professionals of Arewa (North) extraction from diverse professional background have said that Rivers Niger and Benue can be utilised for tremendous social and economic development of the region.

They argued that, the two rivers lie untapped tremendous social and economic development potentials for the region in particular and Nigeria as a whole.

They however urged northern governors to tap arrays of socio-economic resources from the two rivers in the region to create wealth for the people.

According to them, “It is high time the 19 northern governors take advantage of enormous resources in these rivers to develop the north, there is no stopping from tapping these resources since the two rivers are in the northern region, and the entire country will benefit from this. The idea to amalgamate north and south in 1914 by the colonial masters was hatched in Lokoja, where river Benue and Niger meet, known as confluence.

“These projects include, irrigation and hydroponic farming, modern and self-sustaining new towns and neighborhood, Acquaculture supported by extensive Fish Canning, Water Transportation, Tourism and International Water Sports, Development of Inland Ports, Manufacturing Park for Renewable Energy Systems and Livestock Grazing supported by extensive meat processing facilities”.

This was contained in a package titled “Towards a Competitive Economic Development Agenda for Northern Nigeria”, unfolded in Kaduna by the Co-ordinator of the Professionals, and former Minister of State for health,  Arch. Gabriel Yakubu Aduku, on a second day of  a 2-Day Conference organized by Sir. Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.

Operating as YG-Consult, the professionals said they are convinced that developing suitable projects along the rivers could lead to the transformation and modernization of the cities, towns and villages along the river banks.

The professionals are of the strong belief that these projects would generate considerable wealth and create numerous jobs for the teaming population of northern region in particular and Nigeria in general.

Explaining the vision and responsibilities of the YG-Consult, Arch. Aduku said it will facilitate the planning, development management of projects in partnership with state and local governments as well as local and international investors.

The envisaged responsibilities, he explained, include promoting and marketing projects to Local and International Investors, Development Finance Institutions, promote equity participation and investment of states and local governments in the project to reduce their reliance on federal allocation.

Arch. Aduku  also spoke on the possible  roles and responsibilities government could play to make the project a reality, saying that the Federal Government and its agencies will amend and harmonise related laws to support the development of the project, while states and local governments allocate land required for each project as their equity.

He said under planning strategies, the YG-Consult would among others adopt a Metropolitan Development and Management Plans to guide the development along the two rivers to be named Niger River Metro Plan and Benue River Metro Plan respectively.

Arc. Aduku re-emphasized that the Metro Plans would promote social and economic interdependence of the new development, with their surround towns and cities constituting a single economy and labour market.

The Coordinator told the conference that the formation of YG-Consult was further motivated by the policy pronouncement of the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari, including its determination to diversify Nigerian economy away from the dominance of crude oil.

  • Arewa youths name VC ‘youth defender’

Arewa youths name VC ‘youth defender’

The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has named the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Nigeria, Prof Benjamin Ozumba, the Garkuwan Matasan, which means defender of youths. The group also presented a certificate of appreciation to the leadership of the school for “being fair and just to students” from the northern part of Nigeria.

On why the VC was recognised, AYA Speaker Mohammad Salihu said Prof Ozumba’s leadership style had promoted tolerance among students from diverse backgrounds, noting that the VC had inspired the youth with his administrative competence.

He said: “We selected Prof Ozumba as the most appropriate personality who symbolises the resilience and spirit of triumph of the Nigerian character.”

Salihu described Ozumba as “a man ahead of his generation” and a leader who placed the country on the world education  map. He added that the VC remained a model of decency for the youth to emulate.

He used the occasion to call on leaders to pay attention to the plights of the youth, saying the nation would only be able to combat insecurity and crimes if the youth became the focus of the government.

“It is in our opinion that leaders of our country should take a cue from the legacies of the late Ahmadu Bello and Nnamdi Azikiwe as blueprint for change in the polity. The effort would bring about moral rebirth and restoration of national values that will unite all components and segments of this country,” he said.

While presenting the certificate of appreciation to the university management, Salihu noted that AYA had observed that the school never discriminated against students from the Northern part of the country studying at the UNN.

In his response, Prof Ozumba appreciated the group for taking actions to encourage selfless leadership. He described the group as a partner in progress, reiterating his administration’s readiness to ensure that youths are properly empowered through sound education.

Ozumba, who recently received the 2016 Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award and the Best Southeast Vice-Chancellor Award, advised students to uphold good values and shun acts that could endanger their future.

  • Arewa community divided over planned relocation of Mile 12 market

The Arewa community in Lagos is divided over the planned relocation of Mile 12 market.

Some members of the community have declared their support for the move, the leadership of Arewa traders in the market has condemned it. The traders alleged that their kinsmen who are supporting the move are “backstabbers”.

When  Governor Akinwunmi Ambode spoke about the market’s planned relocation after the Agiliti riot, president of the Arewa community declared the group’s support for the proposal.

The group also condemned former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso for trying to mediate with the Lagos State government to reconsider its plan.

But the leadership of the Amalgamated Foodstuff, Ram and Cattle Dealers Association expressed surprise over the statement, describing it as very unfortunate.

The Financial Secretary of the Mile 12 traders association, who is also the youth leader, APC, Lagos Arewa community, Alhaji Shehu Usman, said the community’s efforts to be peaceful with others is being destroyed by what he called a deliberate spread of falsehood.

Usman, who described the action of the leadership of the Arewa community as suspicious, said: “We know the sponsor of that story. But it is very unfortunate that the person is an Arewa like us. The question that should agitate the mind of anybody is which kind of person would work against the interest of his people? It is a sad commentary on how far some people will go to destroy a good thing for their selfish interest.

“Why would anybody want to condemn prominent Arewa leaders like Kwakwanso, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, senior National Assembly leaders and several others who tried to intervene, for being good and responsible leaders? When you call yourself a leader, you must be seen to be working for the interest of your people. It is rather unfortunate somebody would come out to condemn a leader over such matter.”

Usman, while tracing what he said was the genesis of the story, said the leaders who are mostly traders in major markets in Lagos, worked for the state’s development.

He said: “During the last campaign, we came together to work with our party, the APC. It is on record that the leadership of all the markets where you find Arewa community in Lagos joined forces without collecting any money from anybody.

“Our findings have now revealed that those behind the spread of divisive messages are those who planned to make money from the party, but whose plans were thwarted by our action. You can ask anybody, we have always worked with the people and government in Lagos State without any problem. But the action of these people can bring about bad blood between us.”

  • Herdsmen attacks: Jukun accuse Presidency, Arewa of silence

The Jukun people in Taraba State have bemoaned what they called the “graveyard silence and inaction” of the presidency, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) over their plight in the Fulani herdsmen-farmers’ crises.

The people, through the Jukun Development Association of Nigeria (JDAN), highlighted the atrocities being allegedly committed daily by Fulani herdsmen in Southern and Central Taraba State and much of the states in North central Nigeria, saying: “As we speak, hundreds of thousands of cows are occupying destroyed homes and farmlands across the region making sure that indigenous population never return to their homeland again.”

At a press conference in Lagos which was addressed by the association President, Bako Benjamin, the Jukun people said despite all these, “We and the entire people of Jukun have waited patiently for strong words and actions from the presidency.

“But the silence is becoming disturbing and dangerous, more disturbing is the graveyard silence of our  own Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Governors Forum who have chosen to look the other way as fellow Northerners are been butchered and displaced from their ancestral homes and been replaced by new Fulani Herdsmen population.”

Benjamin therefore stated that: “On behalf of the Jukun People all over the world and the traumatized Christian minority tribes in the North Central Nigeria, we call on the state and federal government of Nigeria to make a public pronouncement concerning these killings and displacements immediately to demonstrate concern and reassurance, otherwise the people of these regions will have no choice than to take drastic measures to defend themselves and protect their ancestral homes.

“We once again call on the Taraba State and federal government to immediately send security agents to forcefully send packing all Fulani herdsmen illegally occupying farming communities and arrest the perpetrators of these genocides including village heads and their collaborators.”

The association noted that another “disturbing aspect of this discriminatory bloodbath” is that the herdsmen always attribute “their wanton massacre to cattle rustling as the motives for the wanton killings, but facts point to Jigawa, Kebbi and Zamfara states as the headquarters of cattle rustling in Nigeria.

“But curiously, Nigerians have never heard of any killing, burning of human beings, destruction of homes and farmlands and permanent armed occupation by Fulani herdsmen in farming communities in those areas,” JDAN stated, adding,

“We want to make it abundantly clear to everyone today that this medieval-style territorial expansion and genocides in this 21st century is capable of triggering another round of Nigeria’s second civil war if not checked immediately by the authorities.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the violence by directing the security agencies to take all necessary action to stop the carnage.

Apart from condemning the killings, the president has also said that stopping the attacks is a priority, and that security agencies should bring the attackers to justice.

  • Arewa/Ohanaeze parley

An event of immense significance for the overall progress of this country took place last week in Enugu, Enugu State. It was a landmark parley between two of the nation’s key socio-cultural groups- the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Ohaneze Ndigbo.

Though that outing lacked the usual media blitz that should ordinarily accompany it, its absence did not in any way, whittle down its larger heuristics especially at this point  when ethnic, primordial and religious cleavages seem to be on high ascendancy. Given the foreboding scenario, it remains largely curious why such an important event attracted very little or no media attention.

It is either the organizers opted to keep the media off that symbolic outing or the media did not quite appreciate the larger implications of socio-political groups interfacing on how to move the country forward especially in view of our current experiences.

Be that as it may, the meeting came out successful as its outcome, made available through a communiqué signed by the national chairman of ACF, Alhaji Ibrahim Coommasie and national president of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey respectively, vividly indicates. The two groups while reaffirming their belief in the corporate existence of Nigeria with justice, fairness and equity to all, pledged their total support for the war against terrorism and corruption even as they urged all citizens to cooperate with the federal government in these areas. They also resolved to meet regularly to discuss the state of the nation and forward their decisions to the federal government to aid good and equitable governance.

The meeting is symbolic in more ways than one. Perhaps, it is the first time in recent times the ACF and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo will be putting heads together to share each others’ views and feelings on the multifarious problems buffeting the country. For another, most of the objectives they set out to achieve are at the root of the cycle of instability which this nation has had to contend with since independence. Coming from the ethnic nationalities themselves, the initiative gives a rare of hope that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. This should be something to cheer.

Yet for another, the visionary outing came at a time centrifugal forces have been on top gear such that led two former heads of state to lament that even those who have before now, been ascribed the role of patriots were beginning to question the continued basis for the unity and indivisibility of the country.

That was about two years back when the resort to parochial and primordial attachments became the order of the day. That was at the time when a study group in the United States of America (US) predicated that Nigeria would break up come the 2015 elections. Events prior to that election did not help matters as threats and counter threat from groups on the dire consequences that awaited the country should any of the contending forces fail to win that election held sway. By divine providence however, that doomsday prediction failed to materialize due to the acceptance of defeat by the government in power- a feat that attracted acclaim from world leaders.

But not much has changed in terms of the dispositions and loyalty of the various nationalities to the Nigerian state. Not only is the war against the Boko Haram insurgency that is bent on levying an Islamic state on the country still on, separatist tendencies still hold sway as evident from the rise in tempo of agitations for the sovereign state of Biafra and the renewed blowing up of oil installations in the Niger Delta region. There is also, a pervading air of mutual suspicion, hate and distrust among the nationalities.

All these are palpable signs of the impatience and dissatisfaction of the federating units with the capacity of the system to do justice to the subsisting units. Matters are not remedied by the ambivalence of the Buhari regime on the implementation of the report of the National Constitutional Conference convened during the last administration- a conference seen by many as holding the ace for much of the nation’s problems.

In the absence of any concrete commitment to the implementation of that report and increased impatience of the inclusive units with extant structure of the federation leading to separatist agitations or threats, the bottom up initiative of the ACF and Ohanaeze to solving the fission within the polity, offers another veritable window.

They hit the kernel of the sources of this schism when they spoke of their commitment to the corporate existence of Nigeria where justice, fairness and equity will reign supreme. The purport of this resolution is that the country can only count on the loyalty of its citizens and make real progress when it is seen to be just, fair and guarantees equity to all citizens. These are the irreducible decimals the component units demand from those who preside over our national affairs.

It is also an admission that much of the destabilizing tendencies we have witnessed in recent times derive in the main, from the glaring inability of the central government to guarantee these minimum conditions for co-habitation. It is heart-warming that the groups resolved to meet regularly to brainstorm on the state of the nation and pass their recommendation to the government to aid good and equitable governance.

In this wise, they intend to expand the meeting to involve the Afenifere, the Itsekiri, Urhobo, South-South Peoples’ Assembly and all ethnic nationalities to find common ground on all issues stoking division amongst them. It is their calculation that consensus reached at such meetings when implemented by the government, would go at length to eliminate sources of friction and mistrust among our diverse peoples.

If conducted with a high sense of patriotism and responsibility, the enlarged meeting of ethnic nationalities may be the elixir out of the fissiparous tendencies that have made national integration very elusive on these shores. Not surprisingly, in the absence of that sense of common belonging and identity, the primordial units have had to compete with the government for the loyalty of the citizens. Today, despite all posturing and pretensions, the influence of these parochial loyalty centres on the citizens is still very pervasive.

They subsist due to lack of confidence in the ability and capacity of the central authority to guarantee justice, fairness and equity to the component units. A situation where certain sections feel the country belongs to them or where certain positions are reserved for some people is a negation of a just, fair and equitable order.

Such a system cannot make for stability and progress. And in it can be located most of the nation’s multifarious problems- the pervading corruption, centrifugal tendencies and the inability to imbue a sense of nationalism in all. That also accounts for the loose moral bearing associated with affairs that impinge on the civic public.

Incidentally, the elite have a penchant for parroting and grandstanding on these pristine principles. They are not lacking in identifying what needed to be done for us to make quick progress. But when it comes to the necessary sacrifice or compromises that will bring these ideals to fruition, parochial considerations and the tendency take undue advantage over others, overshadow all senses of rationality. That has been the problem.

If the ethnic nationalities eschew this self-serving predilection; if they are genuinely committed to these irreducible decimals for order and good governance, and the government listens to them, then we are on the right track out of our woes. We now have a new window to tap the feelings of the people at the bottom to effect those necessary changes that are direly needed to build a nation where citizens will first see themselves as Nigerians rather than members of their ethnic groups. That challenge must be taken up by the government now.
