    ARG advocates true fiscal federalism

A pan-Yoruba group, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), yesterday said although it is not a political party, it has “sympathy for the progressives” because they subscribed to its push for “true fiscal federalism” in Nigeria.

ARG said it remains an avid advocate of “regional agenda” for the country as espoused by the pantheon of Yoruba politics, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, saying that would free Nigerians from the “burden of the faulty federal system being practised today”.

Addressing reporters in Abeokuta after inaugurating the steering committee of the Ogun State chapter of the ARG, the group’s National Secretary, Mr. Ayo Afolabi, said it was a good thing that Southwest governors had bought into the regional integration agenda, as evidenced in their support for the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN), which was conceptualised by the ARG.

Afolabi said Nigerians should insist on “free, fair and credible elections” in 2015 and urged politicians to play politics “within the confines of the established democratic set up” in the interest of the country.

He said: “Politics should be operated within the democratic set up. We demand free, fair and credible elections in the future. We are not a political party or into partisan politics, but we have sympathy for the progressives. We want true fiscal federalism to free the people from the burden of the unitary system.”

Afolabi said the group’s aim is to advance Yoruba interest.

On President Goodluck Jonathan’s “second term ambition”, he said Jonathan has a right to contest the poll and it is “up to Nigerians to accept or reject him”

  • ARG lauds cordial relationship between Aregbesola, labour

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) in Osun State has lauded the cordial relationship between the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration and labour unions.

After its monthly meeting in Osogbo, the state capital, at the weekend, ARG said the labour unions’ support for the government showed that the governor was performing.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Olabisi, ARG said with the cordial relationship between labour and the government, the state will continue to witness unprecedented development.

The group pledged its support for the Aregbesola administration, adding that it has positively touched all sectors within its short time in office.

It said: “While some governors were booed during the May Day celebration, Aregbesola’s popularity soared because of his people-oriented programmes, which transcend the boundaries of partisan politics.

“We hail the government for attaining this rare feat in labour relations and urge labour leaders to be wary of disgruntled and selfish politicians, whose stock in trade is to destroy any working arrangement.”

  • ARG backs pipeline contract probe

THE Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has backed the probe of contracts awarded and those being awarded to protect the nation’s pipelines.

In a statement in Lagos by its Media/Publicity Secretary Kunle Famoriyo, ARG noted that the probe “is a step in the right direction”.

The statement reads: “We, of the ARG, endorse and support the National Assembly’s probe of contracts awarded, and those that are being awarded, for the protection of oil pipelines across the country. This is a step in the right direction, as we hope that this effort will end the illegal siphoning and stealing of people’s money under the guise of pipeline protection. The pipeline protection contracts are another bottomless pit, with no accountability. It is another scam, just like the petroleum subsidy regime.

“Our understanding is that the contracts are awarded to the cronies of the powers that be, especially individuals that carry out espionage and covert businesses for the ruling party. These people are mobilised with these contracts to wreak havoc on oppositions to the Federal Government.

“The ARG discovered that certain individuals are being sponsored to destabilise Yorubaland with the money earned from these contracts, through the establishment of political parties and organisations/agencies, with the aim to truncate the ongoing developments in the Southwest.

“We are of the firm belief that agents of darkness will never prevail over those of light. The ARG thus appeals to all sons and daughters of Yorubaland to brace themselves and be alive to their responsibilities to our race, by avoiding those who will be masquerading in messianic garb but who, in reality, are reactionary elements sponsored to destabilise our collective agenda of progress and development.

“The butterfly can only pretend to be a bird, its exploits cannot measure up to those of the bird… Omo Yoruba o, ekiye s’ara! Chew a kola and swallow it with water: it’s the saying of the elders.

    “The struggle continues.”

  • ARG backs Fayemi for second term

ARG backs Fayemi for second term

A pan-Yoruba group, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), Ekiti State chapter, and a political group in Ekiti North Senatorial District, the John Kayode Fayemi Group 2 (JKF 2), have backed calls for the re-election of Governor Kayode Fayemi.

They said the Fayemi administration has developed the state and should be given another opportunity to do more.

They said Fayemi’s endorsement for a second term by the “majority” showed that the governor was chosen for the position by God.

Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, ARG Chairman Elder Bunmi Awotiku said: “The people have called for Fayemi’s return. They waited a long time for him and his achievements in his short time in office must be sustained by returning him as governor.”

JKF 2, which has 23 members and is led by Mr. Kayode Olaosebikan, said: “God is in favour of Fayemi’s return as governor in 2014. His administration’s eight-point agenda has positively touched all parts of the state in less than two-and-a-half years.

“This administration has transcended barriers in the implementation of programmes and projects. Its development and empowerment drive has been non-partisan.

“Its endorsement by the people is an attestation of his success and it is well earned.”

Reacting to calls in some quarters for the rotation of the governorship seat among the senatorial districts, JKF 2 said there is no zoning in the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

It said Fayemi is the first governor produced by Ekiti North District and should be given a second term.

ARG chair marks 63rd birthday with 600 pupils

The Chairman of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), Mr. Olawale Oshun, yesterday returned to the Ibadan Boys High School (IBHS), his alma mater, to celebrate his 63rd birthday with pupils of the school.

Former students of the school, as well as the politician’s associates and family and friends assembled at the school’s hall in Oke Bola to felicitate with him.

The old boys entertained the guests with their escapades in the school many years ago.

Oshun is a member of the Governing Council of the Yoruba Academy. He left the school in 1967.

His friends and associates were led by Otunba Tayo Oyegbade.

The hall was filled with over 600 pupils dressed in full Yoruba attire. Pupils were invited from eight primary schools to promote the Yoruba culture .

The event started with a documentary, where an American lady was seen speaking Yourba fluently in the market.

It was followed by the recitation of poems in Yoruba language. The poems were titled: The profession of my choice and Why I chose to do it. Akinsola Quadri from Ebenezer African Primary School won an award for the best poem.

There was a cultural dance competition among the eight primary schools, which lasted over two hours.

Decked in Kampala with a grey and wine coloured cap, Oshun urged parents to safeguard the cultural values of the Yoruba, warning that it may be face extinction, if parents refused to teach their children their language and culture.

He thanked God for the opportunity to witness another year and thanked his guests for coming.

Oshun said: “I am surprised with the turn out of people here, since it is not a birthday party. I appreciate you all for coming.”

  • ARG not part of Afenifere reunion, says Oshun

ARG not part of Afenifere reunion, says Oshun

Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) yesterday said it was not part of the purported reunion of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, as the latter claimed, following its recent meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The ARG Leader Wale Oshun said members of the ARG have no antecedent of fraternity with the conservative politicians in Afenifere.

He noted that such politicians have been antagonistic to progressive ideas in the Southwest.

Oshun told reporters in Lagos that ARG cannot have dealings with an Afenifere, which he said harbours the likes of Senator Iyiola Omisore.

He added: “If Omisore sits in Afenifere, the bodies of Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo, Adekunle Ajasin, Bola Ige and Abraham Adesanya will turn in their graves.”

The ARG leader denied any tension between the group and the Chief Reuben Fasoranti-led Afenifere.

He explained that its delegations had visited Fasoranti, Sir Olaniwun Ajayi and Chief Ayo Adebanjo at various times to brief them on ARG activities.

Oshun said: “ARG is a group with explicit and untainted moral values and stance. We affirm, therefore, that anybody that purported to be an ARG member and sits in a meeting with Iyiola Omisore as well as some of the other personalities mentioned at that meeting, is on his or her own. Such individual cannot and will not be a member or an associate of ARG.”

There have been speculations that the Fasoranti faction of Afenifere, allegedly supported by Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is being positioned to play a critical role in the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan for 2015. But the old Awoists in the association said it would be hard for them to hobnob with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oshun alerted Southwest residents to the clandestine moves by the PDP to encourage the formation of new political parties to cause confusion in the region.

He said: “We are aware of the plans by the PDP-led Federal Government to take the advantage of our historical sensibilities by promoting certain individuals to form political associations and political parties in our region as well as funding them through spurious and dubious contracts to use them as agents of destabilisation. This is for a sinister 2015 agenda.

“We are putting this in the public space so that our people would be informed about the threats that are being massed against them. However, this is Yorubaland. We are veterans in this kind of struggles and we dare say that we are not battle-weary. We will, as usual, fend this off.”

The ARG leader expressed concerns over persistent Boko Haram threats to the peace and unity of the country.

He urged the Federal Government to halt the frequent bloodshed by the Islamic sect.

Oshun expressed misgivings on the agitation for amnesty for the sect, as being canvassed in some quarters.

The ARG leader doubted if an amnesty would end the sect’s activities, adding that it might even create an opportunity for anarchists to have a field day.

He added: “Considering the structural deficiency of this country, it is not likely that we would see an end to the use of amnesty. Therefore, in line with our constant agitation for the imperative of restructuring this multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-faceted country, it is our view that there is no better time than now to convene a national conference that would finally resolve the nationality question that consistently and continuously pushes this country to the precipice.”

  • ARG objects to minister’s tour

    ARG objects to minister’s tour

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has objected to the ‘Good Governance Tour’ by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, saying that it is a waste of time and resources.

The group lamented that the minister of a federal government that has performed poorly is leading a jamboree visit to the states.

ARG said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Kunle Famoriyo, that there is no basis for the tour.

He added: “This Tour is nothing but a waste of tax-payers’ resources. It is yet another demonstration of the profligacy already associated with this government. It smacks of the usual aggrandisement. From all intents and purposes, it is obvious that the minister and his co-travellers are enjoying themselves at the expense of Nigerians.

“It is our belief that the minister should mobilise his colleagues in the cabinet and other government functionaries to provide data, facts and figures on the qualitative impact of the programmes of the Jonathan Administration on Nigerians. That would be more verifiable than this charade called ‘Good Governance Tour’.

“The question is: where is this administration’s overall performance score-card in the critical sectors? From the available data, the lot of Nigerians remains within the low range in terms of Human Development Index (HDI) and other qualitative indices of performance.

“Specifically, in the Southwest states, we are at a loss as to which federal projects the minister will like to showcase. Is it the deteriorating state of infrastructure in the region, including the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Shagamu-Ore Expressway, Ilesa-Akure-Owo Road, and other abandoned federal projects littering the region. The other day, a big show was made of the construction of the Okerete International Market in Shaki, Oyo State, for which nothing has been heard about it, almost two years after.

“How would Mr. Maku have defended the skewed and unfavourable allocation of projects in the region, an ongoing practice that has become the trademark of the Jonathan Administration?

ARG advised the minister to stop deceiving Nigerians because his boss has nothing to show as achievements to Nigerians.

Famoriyo added: “The sectors; education, health, energy, rail, roads and other sectors, remain parlous, and more than 70 per cent wallow in poverty. He should stop wasting the tax-payers’ money on an unnecessary junketing across the land, which at the end of the day is a meaningless jamboree.”
