Super Eagles drop nine places in FIFA ranking

    By Moses Emorinken

In spite of the Super Eagles sterling performance in the World Cup qualifiers and its convincing defeat of Argentina – one of the world’s finest teams, Nigeria has dropped nine (9) places in the latest football ranking by the International Federation of Association Football ( FIFA ).

FIFA made this latest ranking known on Thursday, putting Nigeria at 50th position in the world and 8th in Africa.

It can be recalled that Nigeria occupied the 41st position in the last ranking. This did not augur well for the die-hard fans of the Super Eagles as they expected the recent exploits of the team to have levitated the Eagles to more desirable position in the upward direction.

A few unexpected teams like Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo etc., ranked higher than Nigeria.

However, we are very hopeful that the forthcoming ranking by FIFA scheduled for 21st December, 2017 should hold more serendipitous prospects for our national team.

See below the list of the top ten (10) teams in Africa and the world:

Video goals highlight: How Nigeria demolished Argentina

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday defeated their Argentine counterparts by a whopping 4 goals to 2 in an international friendly match at Krasnodar in Russia.

The first half of the game did not start in favour of the Eagles as they quickly conceded 2 goals until an impressive free kick by Kelechi Iheanacho at the 45′ changed the narratives.

However, at the start of the second half, the Nigerian side was able to get its rhythm right and the confidence to soar high was restored by the second goal by Arsenal Forward, Alex Nwobi and at the end of 90′, the result was a massive 4-2 victory for the Eagles.

A lot of Nigerians were unable to follow the match for different reasons from it unavailability on digital television to work schedules.

    Thus, find the Highlight below:

  • Eagles can spring a surprise in Moscow

Eagles can spring a surprise in Moscow

Few minutes after the match between Nigeria and Argentina took the centre stage in Krasnodar, Russia, reactions poured in, especially when it looked like the Eagles were not getting their rhythm. And with two goals down it was as if the sing-song over Argentina’s perceived supremacy will continue.

Questions were being asked as to why the team appear to perform below par, but then with the impressive free kick by Kelechi Iheanacho reducing the tally, the confidence soared and the result was a massive 4-2 victory.

But one thing that should be taken away from this match is that the contest for Eagles shirt has become more competitive. With the exception of a few players who have proved that they can always come and fit in, it is no longer a question of just walking in to pick a shirt.

Again the Gernot Rohr approach has also sounded a note of warning which is that everyone should be able to take the opportunity when offered. A Brain Idowu that that is getting his first call saw an opportunity and took it.

While some players may still need to prove themselves others have already sealed their place in the Russia.

This all important and much talked about friendly has fired warning shot one for and another against.  It is an indication that this Eagles can spring a surprise in Moscow and on the other hand, is an indication that Argentina who struggled before booking a place for the world cup may not go far in Moscow.

That is however not to say that anything is cast on stone any team can do the kind of turn around we witnessed Tuesday night. No doubt there will be fireworks in Moscow and you cannot rule out the possibility of nontraditional winners of the world cup clinching it with panache.  Some may say it is too early to predict but I dare say that there is nothing wrong predicting early in the day. When the time for change comes it has come.

Udeze, Allen, hail Super Eagles’ remarkable 4-2 victory over Albiceleste

More football stakeholders on Wednesday hailed the remarkable performance of the Super Eagles, after their hard-earned victory over the Albiceleste of Argentina in the international friendly match at Krasnodar, Russia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles battled from a 2-0 deficit to trounce the two-time world champions 4-2 in the keenly-contested match.

The Grade A friendly match, was one of the series of matches lined up by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to prepare the Super Eagles for the upcoming Russia 2018 World Cup.

Ifeanyi Udeze, a former Super Eagles defender told NAN in Lagos that the team exhibited and played with confidence against their South American opponents.

Udeze commended the players for the victory, and urged them to remain steadfast as the country prepares for the 2018 World Cup.
“The players did well and also played well against Argentina in the encounter and should be commended.

“Coming back from two goals down to win the match showed that the players have the confidence and zeal needed to go far in the upcoming 2018 FIFA Mundial,” he said.

In the same vein, Festus Allen, a former coach of 3SC FC of Ibadan said that the win was a morale booster for the team.

Allen urged the NFF to organise more friendly matches for the Super Eagles in the build up to the FIFA World Cup.

“The win is a confidence and morale booster for the players and there is the need for us to play with more countries that have also qualified for the tournament.“By so doing, our team will be fit and ready to represent the country in Russia,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles were the first African country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after topping their group that had Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia.

Other African countries that also qualified for the FIFA flagship tournament are: Egypt, Senegal, Morocco and Tunisia; the Egyptians last played at the World Cup in the Italia ’90 edition of the tournament.

Argentina beat Russia in World Cup venue’s inaugural match

A late goal by Sergio Aguero lifted Argentina to a 1-0 win over World Cup hosts Russia in the inaugural match at Moscow’s newly-renovated Luzhniki stadium on Saturday.

Aguero’s header found the back of the net in the 86th minute, the striker beating veteran goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev after his initial shot was blocked by the Russian defence.

Led by team captain Lionel Messi, Argentina were dynamic from the start of the friendly but were unable to capitalise on their chances in the first half.

Argentina’s attack expertly combined to generate several scoring chances, with Messi finding Angel Di Maria in the box in the 36th minute.

But the Paris St Germain midfielder could not control the ball.

“Some of the things that we planned worked in this clash against this tough opponent,” Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli told reporters.

“We played in a courageous, bold manner. We created resistance to the pressure our opponent put us under. We need to build on this.”

Konstantin Rausch kept Russia alive in the opening minutes of the second half by heading the ball off the line after Messi had chipped Akinfeev.

Although they regrouped in the second half, Russia struggled to keep possession, heavily relying on Akinfeev to deny the Argentine attack.

Russia tested Argentina for the first time in the 61st minute with a short-range shot by Denis Glushakov tapped away by goalkeeper Sergio Romero before defender German Pezzella cleared the ball.

“We knew that it would be a tough match and that we wouldn’t have possession in some moments,” Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov said.

“I think our defence played correctly from a tactical point of view but we were unable to start quality attacks, especially in the first half, when we had the ball.”

Argentina’s friendly against Russia was the first test match held at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium, the venue for the opening game and final of next year’s World Cup.

Originally opened in 1956, Luzhniki was one of the venues for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

It hosted the 2013 world athletics championships before being closed for renovations to prepare it for the World Cup.

Argentina play Nigeria in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, which will not host any World Cup matches next year, on Nov. 14.

Russia face Spain in a friendly in St Petersburg on the same day.

  • Waiting for Argentina

Injuries have been very unkind to key Nigerian and Argentine players ahead of the November 14 clash in Russia. It has taken the spark out of the game, with key players such as Lionel Messi and John Mikel Obi, waiting for the Mundial for a likely showdown. Messi’s absence isn’t because of injuries. Messi is out of the game in partial fulfilment of his contractual obligations to his European club, Barcelona FC of Spain. Barca’s coach wants Messi to rest for the daunting European tasks. Will you blame the coach? He who pays the piper calls the tunes. A sigh of relief for Mikel, but it won’t be an easy game, considering the presence of Di Maria, Aguero et al in the Argentine side. Di Maria’s goal cost Nigeria the gold medal in the final of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Both countries want the game, going by the stories that the Argentines rejected offers from Ukraine and Azeberjian that are better placed on FIFA ranking than Nigeria. Nigeria got the Argentines’ nod because  of our players’ exploits with their European clubs. Besides, the Argentines have had remarkable experience playing against Nigeria, especially this golden generation of players in Argentina.  The Argentines still point at Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over them at the Atlanta’96 Olympic Games as one of their saddest moments. Will you blame them? We had such great players as Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, Taribo West, Uche Okechukwu et al.

On November 14, the Argentines won’t be seeing Samson Siasia on the bench. Siasia has lost thrice to the Argentines. He got his pound of flesh against them in Nigeria with a 4-1 whiplash at the National Stadium in Abuja.

The November 14 encounter best suits Nigeria because we have been crippled by injuries to key players, such as Ogenyi Onazi, Simon Moses, Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and recuperating goalkeeper Carl Ikeme. This setting has made it mandatory for Coach Gernot Rohr to field new players who have been warming the bench when the big boys held forte.

Eagles’ biggest test for Rohr will be goalkeeping where I expect the manager to field the two goalkeepers at the appropriate time in the game for them to prove their mettle. Perhaps field one goalkeeper per half. Most pundits believe that one of the weakest points in the Eagles is in goalkeeping. They want Vincent Enyeama back. A good choice if he is fit, irrespective of fears of leadership tussle between Eneyama and Mikel.

Rohr will try Mikel, Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi in the midfield. Etebo and Iwobi will be replacing Simon Moses and Onazi, who are injured. The Argentines have a galaxy of intelligent midfielders, such as Di Maria. The Argentines have very fast strikers, who have been scoring goals for their European clubs. One is excited that Troost Ekong and Leon Balogun are fit. It will be nice to see how they battle it out with the sleek Argentine side.

Rohr should know that the Argentines are not formidable at the rear, which explains why their coach is ruing the absence of Manchester City defender Otemandi. Unfortunately, Nigeria will be missing Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo and Moses Simon in the attacking section. Perhaps, Iwobi and Iheanacho can trouble the Argies.

Feelers from Russia suggest that the weather is at near freezing point, but that shouldn’t trouble our players who play in Europe and are used to such unsavoury weather conditions.  This is the first reward for the players with this game in Russia. I hope that NFF chiefs will seize this trip to scout for training grounds, camping centres and hotels where they hope to keep the team next year.

Based on FIFA ranking, Nigeria shouldn’t beat Argentina. But it is a different game with shocking results, where ‘’minnows’’ upset the big boys. A win for Nigeria will boost the players’ confidence. It will throw up new options for Rohr to plot his World Cup strategies. Victory for the Eagles will increase the competition level for first team shirts.

Nigeria appears to be a team of 11 players. Only Grade A matches, such as the one against as the Argentines, can push our boys to give their best as the world waits for the fixtures on the Russia 2018 World Cup to be drawn on December 2.

I hope NFF chieftains can organise more top grade games for the Eagles before the Mundial to help the coaches blend the players properly. NFF’s men must ensure that the Eagles play a send-off game in Nigeria before the World Cup to give Nigerians the chance of seeing their ambassadors to the Mundial against a big football nation – Brazil, Germany and Spain. Interestingly, Rohr has pleaded with NFF chiefs to get a send off game for the Eagles in Nigeria. that is how it is done. Other climes renowned for soccer always get their teams to play the last preparatory game at home. Such games precede a buffet later at night with the head of government of such coun tries. The reception will further strengthen the players’ resolve to do well at the Mundial.

Indeed, when countries head for the World Cup, they do so with great ceremony. It is always a spectacle to behold countries with national airlines land in World Cup venues with the airplanes emblazoned with these countries’ flags and colours. When will Nigeria join the party of countries which celebrate their arrival at big sporting event now that we seem to have found the key to qualifying for the World Cup?

It is always shameful seeing Nigeria’s delegation arrive in competition venues in batches. Our administrators like it because it hides their ineptitude. But the message is sent when our big stars are part of such batches. Our stars’ arrivals are always captured in lousy dressings unlike their contemporaries who arrive in neatly cut designer suits in one delegation.

2018 marks Nigeria’s sixth appearance at the Mundial. Are we arriving in Russia in batches? Will the Eagles be wearing all manner of apparels as if they are going to the beach? What has happened to our national dresses which show who we are? We seem to be destined to arrive in Russia in foreign airlines, but we can still get attention if our players deck our national attires. When will Nigeria have a national carrier? That is discussion for another day.

    Thank you Emenalo

Michael Emenalo has quit Chelsea honourably, with the owner Roman Abramovich and board members acknowledging his laudable contributions towards lifting the club to new heights after 10 years.

Emenalo came with Avran Grant, a former coach of Chelsea. He remained after Grant left, working behind the scene to recruit the right players and give the owner quality advice which have made Chelsea the brand that it is today.

In his 10 years at Chelsea, Emenalo fought battles with new managers, who wanted to annexe his behind the scene jobs to their coaching assignment. He  won all the battles, twice against the Special One Jose Mourinho. The owner stood by Emenalo, who earned his trust and confidence. With Emenalo’s help, Chelsea have won the Premier League title three times, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Europa League and the Champions League while he has been at the club.

Stories from Chelsea’s Cobham training ground last week suggested a rift between Coach Antonio Conte and David Luiz. Emenalo’s exit is said to be a fallout of the rift. Emenalo has left Chelsea with dignity, not trying to destroy what he built simply because Conte wants to do his job. It is quite cheery that Chelsea’s owner has acknowledged this quality in Emenalo with this statement on his exit.

The statement states: ‘’ It is with regret that the owner and board of directors accepted Michael’s resignation this week. He has had a tremendous impact on the club over the past 10 years and this is evident in everything we have achieved. We are sorry to see him go but understand his desire to move on and explore new challenges.’’

Emenalo told the media in London that: ‘’ After 10 years here, 10 wonderful successful years, but very demanding years, it is a very difficult thing to decide to step aside. It is entirely my decision and it has come about for very simple reasons. I need an opportunity to get to see my young kids grow and also to step back and reflect on the work that I have done here and the things that we have been able to accomplish together in this great club.

‘’It is something I have been thinking about for quite some time now and it is something I have discussed with my family and they understand the reasons and timing for wanting to step aside,’’ Emenalo.

    Thank you Emenalo.

Messi not scared of Eagles, keen to avoid Spain

Although Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will not be part of the squad to face Nigeria in the November 14th friendly in Russia, the Argentina Captain is nonetheless concerned about likely opponents when the World Cup draw is made December 1 in Moscow.

Messi whose Argentina is likely to face Nigeria in the world cup proper judging from the modus of past world cup draws, did not express any fears about facing the Super Eagles but rather revealed that he is having goose pimples over possibilities of facing 2010 World cup champions  Spain.

“The worst that could happen to us would be to draw Spain at the group stages,” Messi told TyC Sports Wednesday from Moscow where Argentina play Russia in a friendly on Saturday.

“I would prefer to avoid them, they’d be tough opponents.”

In the interview with the Argentinian television station, Messi named Brazil, Germany and France alongside Spain as favorites to take the World Cup crown in Russia.

“I think that at the moment, they’re the strongest teams who give the best impressions, those who are playing best, with the best individuals.”

Messi also spoke about Argentina’s near nail biting qualification for the World Cup finals, which the Barcelona star sealed with a hat-trick in a rare 3-1 away victory over Ecuador.

“I always believed we’d get there, but I thought we would have tied up qualification before the Ecuador game,” said Messi, reiterating that he would like to end his career in his Argentinian birthplace of Rosario.

“I would love to play for Newell’s Old Boys, in the stadium where I’ve seen so many matches,” he said.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in the coming years, how I’m going to feel. I live from day to day; I’m not focused on the future.”

friendly: Argentina burn calories for Eagles in Moscow

Argentina’s stars wrapped up warm as they trained in Moscow on Tuesday in preparation for friendly games with Russia and Nigeria.

Barcelona icon Lionel Messi and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero each wore a snood plus a pair of thermal adidas leggings as they fought the cold in the Russian capital, where the temperature was due to fall as low as -1C.

Every player also wore gloves as they were put through their paces by manager Jorge Sampaoli.

Messi was pictured with his snood pulled up over his mouth and nose, while he rubbed his hands together in a bid to warm up.

Despite the cold, the Barca icon appeared to be in good spirits and was seen grinning while holding a training pole.

Argentina booked their place at the World Cup last month when a Messi hat-trick saw them beat Ecuador 3-1 in a very different climate to sneak third place in South American qualifying.

They are now readying themselves for next summer’s tournament by playing the hosts in Moscow on Saturday, before taking on Nigeria in Krasnodar next Tuesday.

Russia 2018 will be the fourth World Cup to feature Messi, who has scored five goals and assisted three more in 15 previous matches at the finals.

Super Eagles are looking forward to the November 14 showdown against Argentina in Krasnodar, a tie which many say is as important to Nigeria as it is for Argentina.  The Eagles for the first time earned their qualification with a match in hand, and after the November 4th tie against Algeria the shape up against Argentina many say is ideal and the possibility of facing them again in the world cup cannot be ruled out.  Qualified Nations will on December 1st known their opponents in the group stage.

Russia 2018 will have a familiar look to it with 32 teams competing in the same format which FIFA has used since the 1998 edition of the tournament eight groups of four with the two top in each progressing to the knockout stages.

The finals will begin on Thursday June 14, with the hosts taking part in the opening game, while the final is set for Sunday July 15.

Super Eagles handlers should focus on players’ psyche – Omokaro

Ex-international Bright Omokaro has advised Super Eagles handlers to ensure that the players are psychologically prepared for their encounter with Argentina on Nov. 14 in Russia.

He gave the advice in an interview in Lagos on Monday.

Omokaro said that playing a friendly against great teams like the Argentines would boost the morale and improve the confidence of Super Eagles players.

While commending the team’s current form, Omokaro, who won silver for Nigeria at the 1988 Morocco African Cup of Nations competition, said the team needed lots of motivational advice for the World Cup matches in Russia in 2018.

“This is not just a friendly match; it will test our players’ tenacity. The match will give our players all the confidence they need before the World Cup kicks off.

‘’It will boost the morale of the players, if they perform well because of the status of the country involved. Psychologically it will prepare them towards what to expect in Russia.

“And it is also important for the handlers of the team to constantly charge these players mentally so that they will be prepared and understand that they are no second fiddle to the Argentines.

“This match will improve our profile if we ensure that we give our team all the needed support to hold their ground in Russia,’’ Omokaro said.

As part of the preparation for the 2018 World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had organised a friendly with Argentina in Russia.

Omokaro, a former 3SC of Ibadan defender, said that the choice of Russia as location for the friendly was appropriate.

“At least they get to stay a few days in Russia which will help them acclimatise at the World Cup proper; the NFF has really out-done itself, kudos to them.’’
