  • ARIAN partners FRSC on awareness

The Association of Registered Insurance Agents (ARIAN) is  partnering the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to create  awreness on motor insurance policy.

ARIAN President, Gbadebo Olamerun, during a visit to the Zonal Commander Officer, Zone RS2, FRSC, Nseobong Akpabio, said the deal with the FRSC was to enhance its sensitisation on motor insurance.

He noted that ARIAN was sensitising Nigerians on the importance of third party motor insurance.

He explained the least motor insurance is the third party, which requires N5000 as premium.

He noted that motorists could get claims of about N1 million when an accident occurs.

He stressed that despite that motor insurance is mandatory, only few motorists have genuine insurance certificates.

This, according to him, has hindered the insurance growth.

The Zonal Commander said road users would be more careful while driving when they have genuine motor insurance.

He said in some countries, road users were more careful while driving because their insurance company do not increase their premium due to bad driving.

“FRSC believes that insurance will improve safety on Nigerian roads and that is why we are willing to partner with insurance operators to sensitise the road users.

“With insurance, more awareness will be created for better road use in the country.

“At present, we have a list of registered insurance companies on our website and we urge Nigerians to visit it so that they are guided on genuine insurance companies,” he added.

    20,000 agents unlicensed, says Olamerun

NO fewer than 20,000 unlicensed agents transact business in the country, the new President, Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria (ARIAN), Mr. Gbadebo Olamerun, has said.

He has therefore  called on insurers to ensure that their agents are licensed by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).

Olamerun, who disclosed this at his investiture in Lagos, said his target along with other new executives is to register 20,000 agents at the end of 2015. The association currently has 3, 000 registered agents.

His position is hinged on the belief that increasing the number of registered agents with NAICOM will increase premium collection which will lead to increase in insurance gross domestic product (GDP) contribution in the country.

He said: “My vision is to make insurance agency business easy by collaborating with other stakeholders in and outside the industry, especially with state governments, NAICOM, NIA, CIIN, NCRIB etc to foster the deepening of insurance penetration in Nigeria. We will also collaborate with my constituency, the agents, in introducing interactive session with all insurance agents tagged: Members Evening Initiative (MEI), which will be a quarterly strategic session where agents will be hosted by one of the leading insurance companies.

“This drive will afford all the major players in the industry opportunity to meet with the agents, increasing their capacities, give them a positive mind set and sense of belonging.

“As we speak, we have 3,000 registered agents with NAICOM and we project that by 2015, we would have registered  20,000 agents into the books of ARIAN and NAICOM.”

On the Market Developmental Restructuring Initiative (MDRI), he noted that the association will drive the project with a national holistic view of mobilising all insurance agents for its execution.

Speaking further, he said his leadership will continuously equip its members on the skills needed to sell insurance business to the grassroot

He said: “We will also ensure agents are certified by CIIN because we have been able to push for a reduction of the amount for the proficiency test certification which is the most expensive requirement for agent’s registration with NAICOM.

‘We also want to add value to agency network by recruiting more matured executives such as retired personnel and retrenched bank staff to market specific products such as annuity.

“The era of commission only aided and abetted sharp practices among some agents which have affected the image of the insurance industry. However, ARIAN has set up a portal in its website to check the activities of members, relate with HR of each organisation, and collaborate with the insurance companies to reduce sharp practices to the barest minimum.”

Chief Olusola   Dada of Anchoria Investment and Securities Ltd called on insurance companies to expand their networks to the rural areas, adding that most people in the rural areas are still very ignorant of the importance of insurance.

He said that insurance is still very strange to the people in the rural areas, adding that with the issue of financial inclusion, insurance operators must go beyond what they are doing to boost insurance penetration in the country.

  • ‘Agents vital to insurance growth’

The newly elected President of the Association of Registered Insurance Agents (ARIAN), Mr. Olamerun Gbadebo, has described the contribution of insurance agents as a panacea to deepening insurance penetration.

Olamerun, who made this known while speaking with journalists in Lagos, said poor remuneration, premium suspension and poor perception of agents in the country have been the bane to the agency business, hindering their contribution in achieving the desired results.

He said the association was, however, poised to deepen insurance penetration and increase insurance contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by ensuring proper remuneration of the agents and drive member’s active contribution.

He said the role of agents in selling insurance to the grassroots cannot be over emphasised, adding that they were the major stakeholders in delivering insurance products to every nook and cranny of the country.

He explained that his mandate as ARIAN chief is to make insurance agency business easy by collaborating and partnering with other stakeholders, especially the regulatory body, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), and other bodies, like the Nigeria Insurers Association, Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria and Nigerian Council of Registered insurance Brokers (NCRIB).

He added that poor perception of the agents and premium suspension by a few agents is a challenge the association is working to eradicate through professionalism among its members.

He said: “In this regard, ARIAN intends to eradicate fraud among members by making sure alert system for premium paid is activated by underwriters such that any client who does business with an insurance company and does not get payment alert can report the agent to the regulator for sanctions.

“ARIAN will also make a benchmark to ascertain what is profitable for agents across board.”

Expert urges agents on professionalism, others

AGENTS have been advised to improve on their productivity, professionalism and competence to boost insurance penetration.

The General Manager, Leadway Assurance, Mr Shadrack Sivhugwana, who spoke as the guest speaker at the conference of the Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria (ARIAN) at the weekend in Lagos, said there was need for them to overcome these challenges to gain better proceeds.

According to him, Nigeria has the lowest insurance penetration as less than one per cent of large business penetration flow into the industry.

Shadrack, who also attributed the problems of the agents to poor image branding, noted that most agents were unable to make meaningful income as they tend to focus on services or products with higher commission rather than selling products to meet consumer needs.

He urged insurance companies to lead their agents on the right path and change their perception.

He said: ‘’I think companies need to change their perception on their agents. The way some agents are treated in some companies is as if they are not part of the company.’’

Former General Secretary of the group, Olamerun Gbadebo, who emerged as the new president of the association following an election held during the conference, said the association will make the business easy to operate by partnering with stakeholders to protect agents as well as make the environment conducive for agents to operate.

He said: “My mandate is to make insurance business very easy. We are going to collaborate with all the stakeholders, especially with NAICOM and Nigeria Insurers Association and the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria to see how we can eradicate fake agents and enhance our agency structure.

“We have over 20, 000 agents roaming around Lagos, Nigeria looking for business. At present, we have no fewer than 3,000 agents registered with us and we want to see how we can gain address this.

He added that the association would, particularly focus on reducing fraud, working towards achieving a high standard of professionality and go global by seeking more knowledge from international operators, noting that agents are the bedrock of insurance companies.

At the event, Chief Bode Ogunlana was awarded lifetime achievement certificate for his service to the industry.
