Some victims have described the night of the robbery as a nightmare.

In a statement yesterday, RRS said Olanrewaju, 30, was arrested after a gun duel with its operatives on patrol, who were alerted by a victim.

RRS quoted the victims as saying that the suspect led the eight-man gang to their house.

“That was the man who pointed gun at every one of us, threatening to shoot us if we fail to cooperate with them. They had to destroy my door with a sledge-hammer before they could enter,” he said.

Another victim, who lives on Onibeju Street, confirmed that the suspect led his colleagues to their building, saying: “It was a bad midnight for all of us. In fact, he hit one of our neighbours with a pump action gum. The man has been hospitalised”.

The victims flocked the RRS’ Headquarters in Ikeja to identify the suspect as the gang leader who threatened to waste their lives.

“When I did the calculation, the fleeing robbers had escaped with N549,500 collected from all of us with other valuables”, a victim said.

Items recovered from the suspect were one cut-to-size pump action a Jack Knife, two laptops, 14 handsets, wrist watch and N2, 600.

The operatives, who were led to the robbery scene by Inspector Anthony Inege said a victim, who escaped through the window, alerted them that armed men were operating in their building.

The Nation learnt that on sighting the police, the robbers and the RRS returned fire.

Olanrewaju, who hails from Ita-Amoju in Kwara State, was said to have confessed to RRS investigators that he was lured into the robbery by his gang members, who promised to buy him a commercial bus after the operation.

RRS quoted him as saying: “When I arrived in Lagos, I started driving a commercial bus plying Agege to Oshodi before I joined the robbery gang. But all of a sudden, the bus developed faults, and the owner had to sell the vehicle. Since then, things have been very difficult for me.

“I met other gang members at a beer parlour in Akerele Wahabi area in Agege. I told them I was a bus driver and they promised to buy a new bus for me. When they refused to buy the vehicle for me, they promised again that they would introduce me to one business that can make me become rich. I never knew it was armed robbery they wanted to introduce me to.”

On is arrest, he said: “At midnight when we went for robbery, I along with other seven gang members met at Markaz Road. We operated from one building to the other. Although, I didn’t follow them inside but I was placed on standby outside. My job was to keep all the looted items including money.

“We went for that operation with bullet loaded in four pump action guns. We had planned our movement for that night. We had intention to rob all the houses on the two streets but luck ran out on us as we were able to visit only five buildings before the arrival of RRS operatives. We collected a lot of money, mobile phones and jewellery to mention a few’’.

Two of his colleagues, he said opened fire in the police on sighting them approaching with their vehicle.

He said: “When we sighted the police approaching, we had no choice than to shoot them. We opened fire on them and they sponded immediately.  But when we noticed that we were about to run out of bullets, we decided to take to our heels. Unfortunately for me, while other managed to escape the police arrested me because I was unable to join the waiting vehicle.

“If I had known, I would not have followed them that night. It was my first time of going out with them. I didn’t know they were into robbery but when I discovered the kind of business they wanted to introduce me to, it was too late for me to reject, they also threatened to kill me if I exposed them.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said the suspect is helping with investigation.

  • Student, two others sentenced to death for armed robbery

AN Ikeja High Court yesterday sentenced three persons, including a student, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Ganiyu Hassan, the student/commercial motorcyclist, an aluminium worker, Wasiu Arepo, and a driver, Oluwaseun Idowu were convicted on a four-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and murder contrary to Section 402 (2) (a) of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Section 319 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011.

According to the prosecutor, Mrs Aderonke Akande, the convicts committed the offence on February 5, 2011 at Aleke village, Imota at 2am.

The convicts were said to have stormed the house of their victims, Mrs Adijatu Bakare and her husband, Abubakar.

They asked Abubakar to produce the money he withdrew from the bank a day earlier.

During the operation, Arepo shot Abubakar in the chest after which they ransacked the house and carted away N15,000 cash and other valuables.

Abubakar was left in a pool of his own blood. He was reported to have died on his way to the hospital.

The convicts were caught about two hours after the incident by the vigilante group in a nearby community where they went to hide.

The wife of the victim reported the matter at Imota Police Station and later identified one of the convicts whom she saw during the operation.

During the trial, the convicts pleaded not guilty and denied involvement in the robbery.

They claimed that they were at home on the night of the incident.

Delivering judgment, Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The three accused, agreeing that they slept in the same room on the day of the incident, showed they know each other and were arrested at the same place at 4am on the day of the incident. They did not prove that they were somewhere else when the incident happened. The prosecution had proved beyond doubt the offence of conspiracy and murder against the accused. They are therefore sentenced to death by hanging,” the judge said.

  • Bricklayer to die by hanging for armed robbery

Bricklayer to die by hanging for armed robbery

AN Ikeja High Court yesterday sentenced a bricklayer, Femi Adebowale, to death by hanging for conspiracy and armed robbery.

“In accordance with the provision of the law, you are hereby sentenced to death by hanging by the neck until death. May the Lord have mercy on you,” Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye said while delivering judgement in the four-count charge preferred against Adebowale.

Adebowale had been accused of robbing Alhaja Amudalat Olowo-Eyo of gold jewellery valued at over N500,000, N350,000 cash and other valuables at gun point on December 28, 2012 between 1am and 2am at 10, Aiyetolu Street in Abule-Egba, Lagos.

In her testimony, Olowo-Eyo said Adebowale and her gang threatened to waste her family members’ lives if they refused to cooperate with the robbers.

She said she identified Adebowale as one of the bricklayers brought by her landlord for the renovation of their house.

Her husband, she said, pinned one of the robbers down, giving her the courage to also hold on to the robber next to her.

To free himself, Olowo-Eyo said the robber shot her twice in the chest, adding that 20 minutes later those who fled returned and rained bullets on her apartment.

She said one of her daughters was hit in the stomach, another in the back while her son was shot in the thigh.

Justice Ipaye dismissed the convict’s alibi that he was away in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for his pre-marriage introduction on the fateful day.

She described as not credible, the evidence of his supposed father-in-law, who said he met Adebowale for the first time on the day of the ceremony.

The judge held that the evidence of the complainant and her daughter, among other testimonies, were not controverted by the defence.

Justice Ipaye said the prosecution proved the charge of conspiracy as the act was carried out by more than one person, stating that it also proved the case of armed robbery against Adebowale.

‘Dismissed’ soldier held for alleged armed robbery, extortion

But Emmanuel Audu, 27, clad in army camouflage, denied the allegations.

He was alleged to have conspired with some suspected cultists to beat up Chinedu, their gang member, for allegedly failing to remit ‘returns’.

“We went to Chinedu’s house and we ate together that day and talked. The next time we met, Chinedu showed me a pistol that we should use for operation and I told him I was coming. I went and got an handkerchief to hold the weapon but when I returned, I didn’t see Chinedu nor the pistol. Maybe he thought I wanted to raise alarm.

“I screamed his name to know where he was. He later came out but without the pistol and when I asked where the gun was, he said he doesn’t know anything about it that it belongs to me and my friend, Bandy.

“So, I reported him to the director of his company that he has a locally made pistol in his custody. The director then took us to the police station but Chinedu could not produce the pistol.

“I am not the owner of the money (N8,000). I met them deliberating over it and I did not join in beating Chinedu.  They (suspected cultists) took Chinedu to Monkey Village and it was there that they beat him. “They said he was supposed to pay inconveniency. I collected the N8,000 to help him. Bandy was my school mate at Army Children School, Ojo. I just went to solicit on Chinedu’s behalf. They beat him because he promised to bring money to snatch a car and he did not bring the money.”

I was sent to Maiduguri, from there, we were taken to Jaji for Special Forces training. After training, some were sent back to Maiduguri, some to Yobe and others were sent back to their units.

“I am among those sent back to their units but up till now, I have not seen my signal in the unit. I did not run away from camp.I don’t have anybody from my corps sent back to the unit. I am in intelligence. Others were from infantry and other units. I don’t know why they did not send a signal to my unit.My mother is still alive, I eat from her. I help her with her business. She sells bitter leaf and I assist her in it.Everything just happened as a nightmare because I never imagined this to happen to me.”
