Army denies attack on IDPs camp, soldiers

The Army has dismissed  ‘misleading’ reports of a suicide bomb attack at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

It described as ‘fictitious’, the purported killing of six soldiers by Boko Haram insurgents in an ambush on Damboa Road.

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, spoke in an interview with  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

According to him, two bombers infiltrated Pulka on Monday; one was neutralised by troops but the other detonated his Improvised Explosive Device (IED), killing two persons and injuring two.

A military vehicle stepped on an IED on Damboa Road on Sunday, and two soldiers died, he added.

His words: “The incident in Pulka occurred inside the town and not at the IDPs camp. The troops neutralised one of the attackers even before causing harm to anyone, while the other bomber detonated the explosive, killing two persons and injuring two others.

“There was no ambush by insurgents on our troops. The soldiers were involved in an IED explosion accident when their vehicle stepped on the device planted on the road.

“Two soldiers were involved in the incident; there was no ambush, no ammunition carted away or six soldiers killed, as being erroneously reported. It is a misrepresentation of facts.”

Nwachukwu added that the military authorities sympathised with the victims, even as he reiterated its commitment to the protection of life and property.

He called on the people to be vigilant and provide information on suspicious activities in their communities.

Oyo enters agreement with Army to build Garison

…. as South-west Govs laud Nigerian Army efforts in peace building
The Oyo State Government has entered into an agreement with the Nigeria Army to build a permanent garrison for peace and security to sustain the subsisting tempo of security in the state.

This is coming on the heels of commendations from across the country over the efforts of the Nigerian Army in quelling insurrections and other multiple armed local conflicts around the country.

The efforts has attracted widespread eulogies from many state Governors whose enclaves, which were previously hijacked by armed criminals, have been rescued by the Nigerian Army.

Governor Ajimobi made the disclosure, on Monday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, during the opening ceremony of the last quarter of the 2017 Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Conference with the theme; “Re-appraising the Nigerian Army’s Operational Efficiency in Containing Contemporary National Security Challenges.”

Efforts of the Nigerian Army in quelling insurrections and other multiple armed local conflicts around the country have attracted widespread eulogies from many state governors whose enclaves, which were previously hijacked by armed criminals, have been rescued by the Nigerian Army.

The event was graced by President Muhammedu Buhari, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin as well as serving and retired military top brass among them, former COASs Lt. General Kenneth Minimah and Gen. O.A Ihejirika. Also, Major Gen. Ike Nwachukwu was in attendance among others.

The State Governors were pleased with their partnership of the Nigerian Army, which freed the people from the strangulating grip of numerous armed criminals and hooligans terrorizing communities. They were emphatic that these criminals upturned the serenity of their once peaceful states and hubs of intellectualism into war zones by mindlessly violent attacks on the citizenry.

Edo state Governor Gaius Obaseki, represented by a Senior aide also sent endearing words of appreciation to Nigerian troops at the warfront for their successes in the war against insurgency, adding that the people of Edo state and Nigerians lack words enough to appreciate them for entrenching durable peace in Nigeria.

They noted that the strategic partnership with the Army has enhanced security and peace, which are crucial necessities for growth and development, as they uniformly appreciated the successes of Nigerian troops in the frontline of the war against insurgency. They pontificated that the Army discharged their constitutional duties professionally and responsibly; while encouraging them to sustain the winning streaks in the counter-insurgency operations.

Governor Ajimobi recounted painfully how a former President of Nigeria once described Ibadan as a political garrison command, which bred all manner of armed criminals who daily terrorized the state, noting, it almost tainted the good image of the state, as the intellectual epicenter of Nigeria, as host of Nigeria’s first premier university in history.

Ajimobi revealed that what saved the state from the inferno of the armed criminals was the initiative of his administration to partner with the Nigerian Army, which he said, has rewarded bountifully, as the old infamous tag of “garrison of armed criminals and rogues” has regained its status as a haven of peace and security.

He repeatedly bragged that his administration’s collaboration with the Nigerian Army has rewarded handsomely, by flushing out all sorts of criminal elements from Oyo State.

He reminded guests at the event that Ibadan is a former capital of the defunct Western region and still peopled by all Nigerians, by virtue of its treasure of peace and hospitality, which men of the underworld sought to destroy, save for the intervention of the Nigerian Army.

The Governor therefore welcomed Nigerians to Oyo State, as their home to freely visit at any time they deem fit as security, peace and tranquility have been restored to this ancient largest city in Africa.

The Governor said, he desires to sustain this partnership with the Army with the understanding to build a garrison of peace and security where developments in all sector would thrive unhindered and, in abundance to add value to the lives of citizens of the state.

The State Governor feted the COAS Lt. Gen. Buratai as the symbol of a perfect gentleman-soldier in words, character and action, crowning it with a request to the Army leadership to consider his induction into the Nigerian Army as an “Honorary General,” in recognition of his recent fruitful alliance with the military to deliver security, peace and dividends of democracy to the good people of Oyo State.

Army urges Ondo militants to surrender remaining weapons

The 32 Artillery Brigade of Owena Barracks in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has urged the militants in the state’s creeks to submit the remaining arms in their possession.

Through its Commander, Brig.-Gen. James Ataguba, the Army urged the agitators to use the opportunity given to them by the state and Federal governments to drop their weapons.

Ataguba spoke during his visit to one of the arms collection centres at the Naval Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area.

The commander and the Director of State Service (DSS), Mr A. Ajege, jointly inspected some of the weapons voluntarily surrendered by militants from Ajapa, Ogooluwayo, Igbokoda, Ugbo and Arogbo Ijaw communities.

The militants from various camps dropped sophisticated weapons, like machine guns, AK-47 riffles, locally-made mortals, pump action guns, single and double-barrelled guns, Dane guns and thousands of ammunitions for riffles, cartridges and bombs.

Ataguba also advised militants, who have not surrendered their weapons to embrace peace.

The commander warned that any person or group of persons caught with weapons or found to have committed an act of militancy would be dealt with by security agencies after the expiration of the Amnesty programme.

He enjoined traditional rulers, religion leaders, youth leaders and political leaders to educate their youths on the need to embrace the Amnesty programme to engender a peaceful environment across the state.

Ataguba also urged the public to share genuine information on any person or group of persons who may still be keeping weapons or involved in militancy.

The military officer warned that any information must be true, as false tip-off and witch-hunting would not be entertained.

  • Army set for multiple operations against insurgency

Army set for multiple operations against insurgency

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), First Division, Nigerian Army, Major-Gen. Mohammed Mohammed, has reiterated the military’s readiness to embark on an all-throng approach to tackle insurgency in the North.

Mohammed, who spoke yesterday, when he visited Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, said his visit to Kano, among others, is to seek the government’s cooperation in accomplishing his mission of taming criminals. He noted that the military cannot do it alone.

The GOC said the multiple operations will begin today, adding that the division is currently covering nine states, especially the whole of Northwest and North Central, including Kogi State.

His words: “We have an expanse of space that we have to govern within the period we are, and in view of the challenges, we either mitigate them, reduce them to the barest minimum or eliminate them completely. But we can’t do it without your support, and that is why we have come to register our presence with you and solicit your support. We also thank the governor for the support he has been giving to the military.

“Operations will begin tomorrow or on Thursday in Falgore Forest, Zamfara State; Brinin Gwari forest on the Abuja-Kaduna road, because crime on those roads is really becoming worrisome and the Army can’t watch the miscreants have their way when they can be handled.”

Governor Ganduje maintained that through a close relationship with relevant security agencies, the state has, for some time, enjoyed peace and stability. He, however, lamented that there are some pocket of criminality here and there.

“We are vulnerable to insurgency, but we have been able to contain it. A number of times, some terrorist were arrested here with the help of the military and other security agencies, and then transferred to Abuja for trial.

“We have collected the design and the lay-out of the training ground you want to build at Falgore forest. The government is studying the designs and deliberating on the kind of help we can offer financially for the project. In the long run, our intention for Falgore forest is to resettle nomadic herdsmen, who are travelling from one end of the country to another, which constitutes security challenges.”

Indigenous language: Army deserve commendation – Obasa

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa has said that Nigerian Army should be commended for directing its personnel to learn the three major Nigerian languages: Yoruba, Igbo and Hsusa.  Obasa spoke in reaction to the order given recently to all army personnel in the country to learn the three major languages.

The speaker has been an advocate of the teaching of indigenous languages in schools and the Assembly under him recently passed a law making the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory in Lagos schools. Obasa said the new directive shows that the Nigerian Army is passionate about ensuring internal peace and unity in the country.

“Our argument had often been that security officers should operate in areas where they understand the language, cultures and traditions of the people. It would not make much of a meaning to post Hausa men to Yoruba land when they have a very scanty knowledge of the place. This was why we constantly advocated for state policing.

“We also recently resolved to have Yoruba language taught in all schools in Lagos. It is not a personal issue, there is the need to ensure that the language retains its importance in the country. Across the world, people are proud of their languages. They even teach with it in schools and solve major societal issues with it. We know English is our major language here, but we must keep indigenous ones from extinction.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman, while confirming the order, had said that it was part of the newly introduced language policy. “With introduction of the three major languages in the military, we are sure of a positive result in the fight against terrorism and other issues threatening our peace as a nation,” the speaker said.

•Judge absent at proscribed IPOB chief’s trial

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) has filed an application before a Federal High Court in Abuja demanding payment of N10 million to him for the psychological trauma he has gone through following alleged extra-judicial self-help actions of the Army Chief of Staff.

Abaribe, who appeared as one of the three sureties for the bail granted to the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, filed the suit ahead of yesterday’s hearing in the trial of the IPOB leader.

At the last adjourned date, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, had ordered that Abaribe and the other sureties to appear in court to show cause why a bench warrant of arrest should not be granted against them.

However, at the resume of sitting yesterday, Abaribe was in court.

But Justice Nyako did not sit due to the judges’ conference she was attending in Abuja. She adjourned the trial till December 5.

But in the application filed by Abaribe against the army, he is praying for an order of the court compelling the Chief of Army Staff to show cause why the Attorney General of the Federation should not be compelled to initiate contempt charges against him for his extra-judicial self-help conducts that allegedly frustrated the proceedings and course of  administration of justice in the bail and bail bond granted and executed in the trail of Kanu.

The senator said the Chief of Army Staff’s actions ridiculed the court and made its power to appear nugatory as well as placing the applicant in a fixed up position. Abaribe said it was only the army that had the last contact with Kanu that can either produce him or explain the circumstances surrounding his whereabouts.

Abaribe said to his surprise, the army subsequently declared IPOB a terrorist organisation and its members wanted.

He added that all attempts and efforts thereafter made by him to contact Kanu by whatever means failed completely as there was no response and nobody, except the Army, could give any account of him.

  • Mugabe appears in public for first time since coup

Mugabe appears in public for first time since coup

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe arrived at a university graduation ceremony in the capital on Friday, his first public appearance since a military seizure of power that political sources say is aimed at ending his 37 years in office.

Wearing a blue and yellow academic gown and mortar board hat, the 93-year-old sat in large wooden chair at the front the hall.

He was greeted by ululations from the crowd as he declared the ceremony open.

Earlier, leaders of Mugabe’s party are making plans to force him from office if the 93-year-old leader resists pressure from the army to quit.

The self-styled grand old man of African politics, the only leader Zimbabwe has known since independence in 1980, insists he is still in charge. But the source, a senior member of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party, made clear the party wanted him gone.

“If he becomes stubborn, we will arrange for him to be fired on Sunday,” the source said. “When that is done, it’s impeachment on Tuesday.”

Zimbabwe’s official newspaper, the Herald, ran photographs late on Thursday that showed a grinning Mugabe shaking hands with military chief General Constantino Chiwenga, who seized power this week.

That suggested Mugabe was managing to hold out against Chiwenga’s coup, with some political sources saying he was trying to delay his departure until elections scheduled for next year.

The ZANU-PF source said that was not the case. Anxious to avoid a protracted stalemate, party leaders were drawing up plans to dismiss Mugabe at the weekend if he refused to quit, the source said.

“There is no going back,” the source told Reuters. “It’s like a match delayed by heavy rain, with the home side leading 90-0 in the 89th minute.”

    Mugabe’s options look limited.

The army is camped on his doorstep.

His wife, Grace, is under house arrest, and her key political allies are in military custody.

The police, once a bastion of support, have showed no signs of resistance.

Furthermore, he has little popular backing in the capital, a hotbed of support for the opposition, which has tapped into the anger and frustration at his handling of the economy, which collapsed after the seizure of white-owned farms in 2000.

Unemployment is now running at nearly 90 per cent.

Chronic shortages of hard currency are driving up the price of imports as much as 50 per cent a month.

On social media, Zimbabweans circulated a spoof message to Chiwenga demonstrating the depth of anger at Mugabe.

“If Mugabe refuses to resign, let the army take him to First Street and leave him there. People of Zim will negotiate with him,” the message read.

In a statement broadcast on national television, the military said it was “engaging” with Mugabe and would announce an outcome as soon as possible.

The United States, a longtime Mugabe critic, is seeking “a new era”, the State Department’s top official for Africa said, an implicit call for Mugabe to quit.

In an interview with Reuters, acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Donald Yamamoto appeared to dismiss the idea of keeping Mugabe in an interim or ceremonial role.

“It’s a transition to a new era for Zimbabwe, that’s really what we’re hoping for,” Yamamoto said.

The army appears to want Mugabe to go quietly and allow a smooth and bloodless transition to Emmerson Mnangagwa, the vice president, whose sacking on Nov. 6 triggered the military takeover.
