Army chief cautions media on Boko Haram reportage

The  Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, has  appealed to the media to be cautious in reporting security matters  capable of jeopardizing ongoing military operations in the North East.

Buratai said media practitioners must see themselves as partners in the peace, progress and security of the country, adding that  the Nigerian Army in particular and the military in general have no monopoly of the total security in the defence of our country.

The Army chief spoke in Abuja on Thursday, after being conferred with the award of “Man of the Year Award”  by The Politico Magazine”, an  Abuja based monthly magazine.

Buratai appealed to the media to work closely with the military for achievement of the needed success in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in the North East, the militancy in the Niger Delta and other security threats across the country, saying the task was not only for security outfits alone.

Although he admitted that there were challenges in the Army’s operations in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram, the Army chief however, said any action the military has taken so far was to the best interest of the country.

“We must work together to ensure a total security and defense of our country. I want to state here that the Nigerian Army is a great partner in progress just like the media. I want to also state here that the media is a partner in national security. We don’t have the monopoly of the total security in the defense of our country. We must work together to ensure a total security and defense of our country.

“Though there are challenges along the line but the ultimate objective of whatever action that is taken along the line is with the aim of safeguarding our sovereignty, our dignity as a nation and indeed the general wellbeing and safety of our country men and women, “he said.

Buratai assured that the Army would continue to ensure it keeps to its rules of engagement in its operations, saying where it is perceived to have gone outside its schedule, the action would have been to safeguard the country.

“We are interested in safeguarding human rights; we are also partners in this regard with the media. We will continue to safeguard human rights in the course of our duties. We have it written down in our code of conduct and indeed our rules of engagements.

“The first principle of the Nigerian Army’s Rules of Engagement is the protection and safeguarding of human lives. This has remained sacrosanct and we will continue to ensure that human rights are observed, the rules are observed, the international humanitarian laws are observed as well as ensuring that the application of the laws of armed conflicts in all our operations are strictly observed.

“So we we call on the media generally to look at the delicate and complex role of the Nigerian Army and indeed the Nigerian military in this context and that whatever we do, we do it for the sake of our country, we do it equally for the sake of humanity.

“I wish to also state here that we are partners in peace and development of our country. Peace is key, peace is fundamental and to development just as it is to security. And that is the objective of the military, it is also enshrined in our constitution as well as the directive of the political leadership of this country to see that we perform our duties in accordance with the laid-down constitutional provisions, “he added.

He thanked the Management of the Magazine, led by its publisher, Alhaji Mustapha Shehu, for finding him worthy for the award but asked that he alone should not be singled out for the Army’s achievement in the North East, as according to him, President Muhammadu Buhari, principal, and the entire military personnel contributed immensely for the defeat of the terrorists.

Buratai: “I dedicate this award to the leadership of the Nigerian Army. It is not only the Chief of Army Staff that is responsible to all these successes that have been achieved, it is the combination of hard work, dedication and selflessness on the part of all the principal officers, the directors in Army Headquarters, the staff officers and indeed all commanders in the field as well as in other military institutions. It’s a collective responsibility, it’s a collective efforts towards galvanizing and mobilizing all the troops to achieve the objectives of securing our country and indeed protecting Nigerians wherever they are.”

He added: “We know that the challenge in the forefront has been that of the North East but there are other subsidiaries challenges in the Niger Delta, in the North West, in the North Central and a host of others  in the South South, the South East and South West.

” It took a lot of efforts, coordination, planning, movement of personnel and logistics to ensure that the progress and the successes we have achieved come to materialize hence the appreciation by Nigerians, including the Chief Executive, staff and board members of The Politico Magazine, to say we thank you for your service to our country.

“In this regard, we have no any option than to accept it and to also acknowledge and thank you profusely for this award. The successes of our operations cannot be in isolation, Mr President and Commander in Chief has been at the forefront.

“We have received very strong political direction, we have received the necessary support, the logistics support, the financial support to ensure that the fight against the Boko Haram and indeed all other insurgency or banditry as well as militancy are properly conducted with the right equipment, with the right mindset and indeed with the right logistics. Equally, the moral of the troops through sound administration and the provision of our requisite training are key and this we have been substantially supported by Mr President and Commander in Chief. This, we have equally appreciated,” he said.

Past recipients of the Politico Man of the year award include:  Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai,  the Emir of Kano,  Alhaji Sanusi Lamido, Minister for transport and Aviation, Rotimi Amaechi, Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima and  President Muhammadu Buhari.

  • Nigerian Army deploy troops to Gambia

Troops from the Nigerian Army on Thursday arrived Dakar in Senegal as part of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) standby Force with the aim to enforce the December 1, 2016 election in The Gambia. The Nigerian troops will join others from Ghana and Senegal.

Earlier in the week, the Nigerian Navy had moved the new Navy war Ship NNS UNITY to Senegal while the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) also deployed to the tiny West African Country.

In a statement by the Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, the deployment is in line with the decisions of ECOWAS leaders. He said it will also prevent the breakdown of law and order in the country.

Abubakar said:  “The ECOWAS have unanimously decided in their meeting to use the ECOWAS Standby Force for deployment in the Gambia with the Nigerian Military participation. The aim is to implement the decision of ECOWAS leaders in upholding the result of the Presidential election held in The Gambia on the 1 of December 2016.

“It could be recalled that the ECOWAS leaders led by our noble President His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari made series of spirited efforts to resolve the impasse amicably but all diplomatic efforts by the ECOWAS and other world leaders were rebuffed by outgoing President of the Gambia Haj Yahya Jammeh.

“Accordingly, in line with this the Nigerian military will deploy its assets as part of ECOWAS standby force to protect the people of the Gambia and maintain sub regional peace and security.  Additionally, it will also protect and sustain the democratic norms in the sub-region.  This will also forestall the breakdown of law and order in the Gambia and the sub-region in general.”

Army urged to go after politicians linked with Boko Haram

A group under the aegis of Northern Interfaith and Religious Organisation for Peace (NIROP, has urged the army to go after the identified political Boko Haram members.
The group questioned the motive behind Borno state government’s reaction to the arrest and interrogation of the Chairman of Mafa Local Government Council, Alhaji Shettima Lawan, who was caught harbouring Boko Haram fighters.
Its National Coordinator, Bishop Musa Fomson, who addressed reporters in Abuja at the weekend, said it appears that while soldiers are diligently working to round up escaping terrorists, politicians from the state are covertly subverting the military’s efforts thereby making the work to be worthless.
He urged Nigerians to rise up and condemn any attempt that would encourage the terrorists from regrouping.
“We appeal that Nigerians make vigilance their watchword, be their neighbour’s keepers and support the military to expose those that are political Boko Haram as we see this as being strategic to winning the battle and ensuring that the peace in the wake of the terror group’s defeat is not short lived.
“In our view, no one deserves to go through the harrowing experiences that Nigerians, particularly the people of the northeast, had gone through in the hands of the terrorists and it is definitely not an experience that should be repeated by allowing the killers to regroup.
“This is what makes it sad that some people under certain organisations or political configuration are practically wishing and working for the terrorists to regroup.
“We urge Nigerians to collectively condemn these individuals and groups regardless of whether they pretend to be politicians, activists, journalists, NGOs, media or any other covers being used to promote the interest of the defeated terrorists.
“The Nigerian Army on its part has only one option, which is to go after the identified political Boko Haram members,” he said.

The Nigerian Army on Sunday said soldiers killed 13 suspected Boko Haram members during clearance operations in Bomboshe and Sinbaya in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno.

Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Director of Army Public Relations, said in a statement in Maiduguri that the operations were carried out on Thursday and Friday.

  • Manhunt for 8 students, staff abducted at Turkish school in Ogun

Manhunt for 8 students, staff abducted at Turkish school in Ogun

    • We’ll get them freed, security chiefs vow

A massive security hunt got underway yesterday at Isheri, Ogun State, for the eight people abducted by suspected kidnappers on Friday from the Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) in the town.
Taken away were three students, three female supervisors, one female cook and a female Turkish teacher.
Two of the abducted students were said to be preparing for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board exam.
The school formerly known as Turkish International School is owned by a Turkish organization, First Surat Group.
Senior officers from the army, navy, police and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) in the State yesterday moved to the town at the boundary with Lagos to coordinate the search and rescue mission.
The search and rescue team began its task by combing the waterways around Arepo, an Ogun-Lagos border town.
Lagos towns of Ikorodu and Iba have in recent times been used by suspected militants for kidnapping and oil bunkering.
It was learnt that Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, ordered that the rescue mission be led by the elite IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The IG team is being led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Abba Kyari.
A source said: “We are combing the creeks around the school and are working on some intelligence reports, which cannot be disclosed so as not to jeopardise the operation. We hope that we will make a breakthrough soon.”
The Ogun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told The Nation that the security chiefs were already tracking the abductors.
He pledged that the victims would be rescued alive.
Mr. Mehmet Basturk, the Group Managing Director of First Surat Group, was also expected at the school yesterday from his Abuja base.
Spokesman for NTIC Colleges, Mr.Cemal Yirgit, threw light on how the kidnap took place, saying everything was being done to free the abducted people.
Yirgit in a statement entitled, “Kidnap of students and a Turkish teacher” said: “We wish to notify the general public of the unfortunate incident that occurred on January 13, 2017, at the premises of The Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NTIC), Ogun State.
“At about 9.30 pm local time, a group of people armed with dangerous weapons gained entrance into the girls’ section through different means and held hostage three female supervisors, a female cook, a female teacher (Turkish) and three students.
“The school security noticed some movement on the CCTV camera at the girls’ section and promptly deployed security personnel and alerted the relevant security agencies in the area as customary.
“Upon hearing the security alarm activated and sighting our personnel, the armed invaders opened fire on the security staff and managed to escape through a very dangerous route, with the hostages.
“The security agencies are currently on their trail as the whole area has been cordoned off.
“We wish to assure parents and guardians that the students and teacher will return to safety as soon as everything possible has been deployed to ensure that our teachers and students return unhurt by God’s grace.”
It was gathered that the kidnappers gained entry into the compound by climbing the fence.
They then dug a portion of the fence close to a swamp. They proceeded to the female hostels, where they seized the victims all of whom they threatened with gun before forcefully taking them away.
The abductors were yet to contact the school management or parents of the abducted students at press time.
Parents stormed the school yesterday to pick their wards ignoring pleas by the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Yetunde Onanuga, who visited the school.
Addressing the agonising parents, Onanuga, spoke of government’s commitment to the safe return of the students, saying state government had put security measure in place in that direction.
The deputy governor appealed to parents and guardians of the pupils to remain calm and not engage in panic withdrawal of their children from the school.
“We are here to express our concern and sympathy. It is unfortunate that, this is happening barely few days on school resumption. When we heard about it, we quickly sprang into action, hence the urgent visit.
“Our government has put necessary security measure in place for the rescue of the abductees. Ogun State is already in action. Let me reassure you that we are going to rescue the victims soon.
“No doubt, it does happen once a while but it’s unfortunate, the state is aware and we are doing the work, we will do all that is possible for the safe return of the children. The FG is aware and they have also assured us that very soon, they would be rescued.
“It’s not the time to start taking children out of the schools, the security operatives are all on ground to ensure safety of life and property of the school. We will do all that is possible to make sure the school is safe and the school authority is also doing what is possible to ensure that the state is safe.”
Mr. Ahmad Ajani, whose daughter – Hanatullah Aderinto Ajani (22), was one of the abducted pupils, said he got the information on Friday night.
Ajani who described the incident as sad and unfortunate said his child was in the school to prepare for the forthcoming JAMB exams.
“Somebody called in the midnight that something happened here and my daughter was involved, I had to come down this morning (yesterday) and the Police Commissioner addressed us assuring that they would work on it and that everything would be alright very soon.
“I am very sad but prayerful that they are rescued on time. As I am standing, I am traumatized; you can imagine a girl of 22 preparing for University and somebody took her away, it is a big issue.”
Another parent, Mrs. Funmi Tijani, said: “We (parents) are taking our children away. We’ve agreed amongst ourselves to take our children away for a week.
“My daughter saw them (kidnappers), witnessed the whole scenario and she’s traumatised. Psychologically, they (students) are not balanced; you don’t expect me to leave her behind.”
Expressing concern over the development, a parent who requested anonymity urged security agencies to examine all possibilities of both domestic and international involvement in the incident.
“It is a fact that a group within the country preys on innocent school children to prosecute a warped war while some forces outside Nigeria who failed in the bid to cause the closure of Turkish schools in Nigeria have not relented,” he said.
The kidnap comes about three months after gunmen invaded Lagos Model College in Epe and kidnapped four students, a vice president and a teacher from the school.

Anti-terrorism coalition lauds Army over arrest of insurgents

An anti-terrorism group, the North East Coalition Against Terrorism (NECAT) has praised the Nigerian Army over recent arrest of some individuals harbouring Boko Haram members who are on the run.

National Co-coordinator of NECAT, Yusuf Msheliza, at a news conference in Abuja yesterday, said going after those it described as politically exposed persons (PEP) that have been proven to have links with terrorists especially those that were harbouring Boko Haram fugitives is the right thing to do in order to prevent the insurgents from regrouping.

He said though the fleeing terrorists have carried out surprise attacks, but Nigerians are aware that the army has won the war.

Msheliza said: “We are pleased to report that we are not in any way disappointed with the turn of events since that defeat first made headlines. The expected fallout from that defeat was that the remnants of the terror group would try staging surprise attacks even as they are on the run all in the effort to present a picture of not being defeated.

“We are not surprised at the development in the news about such attacks and we must say there are even fewer attacks than we anticipated, all thanks to the Nigerian Army for intelligence gathering that has been used to foil many of such plots.

“We hail  the  Nigerian Army for arresting these politically exposed persons who aid the activities of terrorists in the country.  Our earnest expectations is that they will soon be charged to court under anti-terror laws if found culpable.

He said though the army has so far been able to nab local government level politicians but from information available in the public space previously, the searchlight would have to beamed on politicians at the state level, who had openly disclosed their association with Boko Haram in the past.

He however appealed to the security agencies that in going after these political Boko Haram members, no distinction should be made on account of past or present political affiliations, ethnic background or religious subscription.
