Slot urges Liverpool to  fix ‘very bad cocktail’

Liverpool can end a tough season on a high if they eliminate a “very bad cocktail” of mistakes in defence and missed chances, manager Arne Slot said.

The Reds can secure their spot in the Champions League last 16 with victory at home to Qarabag tonight  after a series of impressive wins against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Marseille.

But the English champions have not won in five Premier League games to slip to sixth in the table and risk missing out on next season’s Champions League.

Despite winning just the club’s second league title since 1990 last season, Slot’s own position has come under scrutiny, particularly with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso available after his departure from Real Madrid.

A 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday was Liverpool’s first loss in all competitions for 14 games but that run contained a number of disappointing draws.

Slot told his pre-match press conference that Liverpool often created far more chances than their opponents without equivalent reward.

“That’s a very bad cocktail we are having,” he said. “If we can improve in both boxes, we can do very special things this season.

“If we can only improve in one box, then it’s going to be probably an acceptable season, but not more than that. And if we can’t improve in both boxes, it’s going to be a lot of noise throughout the whole season.”

Slot, in his second season at Anfield, has been badly hampered by injuries.

Forward Alexander Isak will miss most of the rest of the season after breaking his leg while Liverpool will have to field a makeshift centre-back against Azerbaijani team Qarabag.

Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are out injured, while Ibrahima Konate is absent on compassionate leave following the death of his father.

Midfielder Wataru Endo is expected to deputise alongside Virgil van Dijk, who at 34 is Slot’s only available centre-back.

“There are no centre-backs available apart from Virgil,” said Slot. “He is one of the players I credit a lot for him being fit all the time at his age, constantly be ready to play another 90 (minutes).

“That is something we should not take for granted.”

Liverpool have apparently pulled the plug on the potential transfer of veteran defender Andy Robertson to Tottenham.

“It’s good to have him here,” said Slot. “It’s hard to say anything definite in this world we are in, but I expect him to stay, yes.”

Slot rules out January signings for Liverpool

Arne Slot has admitted he doesn’t expect Liverpool to make any signings in the January transfer window but said the club will always look for opportunities in the market.

Liverpool twice broke the British transfer record last summer, spending close to £450 million ($609m) on new signings.

However, long-term injuries to striker Alexander Isak and defenders Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni have left the Premier League champions short on options in both attack and defence heading into the second half of the season.

Despite their injury troubles, Slot doesn’t anticipate any incomings before the window closes on Feb. 2 unless the right player becomes available.

“That is what I expect,” Slot said. “But I always say when there is an opportunity in the market where we think we can strengthen the squad this club will always try to do so. But at this moment I expect it to stay mainly the same.”

  • Slot challenges Liverpool against  Osimhen’s Galatasaray

Slot challenges Liverpool against  Osimhen’s Galatasaray

Liverpool boss Arne Slot challenged his players to give their all when they take on Turkish champions Galatasaray in Istanbul on match day 2 of the Champions League tonight.

Liverpool edged Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a fiery Champions League opening day win in the 36-team league phase, but lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend.

The Premier League champions have overhauled the squad that cruised to the title last season and won their first five games with Slot’s new-look set-up.

The Dutch coach warned Galatasaray presented a major challenge, despite their opening day 5-1 drubbing at Eintracht Frankfurt.

“If you want to compete for trophies, let alone if you wear a Liverpool shirt, (you must) give everything you have, and combine that with the best football you can play,” Slot said.

“They are a very, very good team and have a very good manager,” Slot said at a Monday night press conference in Istanbul.

“The 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt was either the quality of Frankfurt, or a little bit of bad luck for Galatasaray,” he said.

“They know what it takes to win the league and know what it takes to win a game of football, so we have to be prepared for that,” said Slot.

Slot has the weapons to win the club’s seventh Champions League crown this season and one of those is assistant Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who coached Galatasaray’s rivals Besiktas in 2024.

“Gio is one of my assistant coaches so he is part of the set-up if we discuss or talk about the team we face, if that is Palace or Everton or Atletico Madrid or, in this situation, Galatasaray.”

“He has knowledge about Turkish football, he knows these players.”

Slot said that at this level set pieces were crucial.

“We knew Galatasaray were also strong on set-pieces, but I can tell you we won our last Champions League game because of a set-piece,” he said of Virgil Van Dijk’s late winner over Atletico.

Despite cruising to the Premier League title last season, the Reds invested nearly £450 million ($614 million) in transforming their squad during the summer transfer window.

Forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike were part of the recruitment but in their opener against Atletico it was old hand Mohamed Salah who delivered by scoring one and making another with a deflected free-kick.

Slot admits motivation challenge after title triumph

Fresh from clinching their 20th  English top-flight title, Liverpool’s challenge is to remain motivated for the remaining two games of the season, manager Arne Slot said ahead of Monday’s clash at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Liverpool sealed the Premier League title last month and have a huge 15-point lead over second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table.

Slot’s players have enjoyed some extra time off since wrapping up the league and several were pictured enjoying a break in Dubai this week.

Slot said the team’s mentality was positive but motivating the players was a challenge with nothing riding on their final two games.

“It’s difficult for a team who has already won the league to train so many days in a row, we have hardly had any time off in the season because of so many competitions – I want to make that clear,” Slot told reporters on Friday.

“The boys deserved a few days off, it’s been a long season for us, to train three days is enough to be physically ready for the game. To be mentally ready is something different.

“At the end of the season you have to find the right balance to be mentally fresh… I think the honest answer is yes (it is harder to motivate them).”

Liverpool clinched the title with a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month and have since lost 3-1 at Chelsea and drawn 2-2 at home with Arsenal, after blowing a two-goal lead.

  • Slot, Liverpool, Everton sanctioned over derby chaos

Slot, Liverpool, Everton sanctioned over derby chaos

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was handed a two-match suspension following the chaotic Merseyside derby with Everton earlier this month, while both clubs have been fined, the Football Association has said.

Slot was shown a red card after the final whistle and admitted the charge of acting in an improper manner and using insulting or abusive words or behaviour towards the referee and an assistant referee.

The manager also received a 70,000 pounds ($88,522.00) fine, while his assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff, also sent off after the final whistle, has also received a two-match suspension and a 7,000 pound fine.

Everton were fined 65,000 pounds and Liverpool 50,000 pounds after both clubs admitted to charges of failing to ensure their players did not behave in an improper or provocative way after the final whistle.

Liverpool substitute Curtis Jones and Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure were also shown red cards after the game, and the final whistle sparked a scuffle between both sets of players.

Everton’s James Tarkowski equalised late in stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations and Jones took umbrage at Doucoure celebrating in front of the visiting fans after a 2-2 draw in the final derby at Goodison Park on February 12.

Dad faults Liverpool’s Slot over ‘exciting’ football

Liverpool manager Arne Slot joked  that his father sometimes complains that his football is not “exciting” enough.

The Premier League leaders, six points clear of second-placed Arsenal, play relegation-threatened Ipswich today but the Dutchman is expecting a difficult game.

“They’ve been a bit unlucky sometimes in the last moments of games,” said Slot, who faced Ipswich in his first game in charge at Anfield in August, winning 2-0. “The second half of the season is always more difficult than the first half because some teams strengthen themselves during the winter break.

“Many teams work with their manager for half a season and that normally leads to a team becoming better.”

Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich have had the occasional encouraging result but last week they were hammered 6-0 by Manchester City.

Slot was asked at his pre-match press conference whether Liverpool fans would expect a similar result at Anfield.

“That is difficult for fans, and my father is a fan as well, and when I call him after the game he can also say it wasn’t as exciting as other games of Liverpool when he watched the game against Lille (a 2-1 Champions League win in midweek),” he said.

“And then I have to try to explain to him that these games you can easily lose if you’re starting to force all kinds of difficult balls. But he’s not always agreeing with me.

“But as a manager I was quite happy with our performance against Lille, because they were a team that are so well-organised and so much control.”

  • Liverpool brace for tough test against high-flying Forest, says Slot

Liverpool brace for tough test against high-flying Forest, says Slot

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot lavished praise on Nottingham Forest and said that his side will have their work cut out trying to get a positive result when the two teams face-off at the City Ground.

While Liverpool are unbeaten on the road in the Premier League this campaign, Slot was aware Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest are dangerous opponents. Forest are the only team to beat Liverpool in the league this season, with the shock 1-0 win coming at Anfield in September.

Liverpool top the Premier League standings with 46 points from 19 matches, six ahead of third-placed Forest.

“I have always said you can judge the table best halfway through the season. They are up there with the rest so they are definitely a team in competition with us and the others,” Slot told reporters ahead of today’s Premier League clash.

“If you look at the way they play and their results then it is deserved. It is going to be a very difficult challenge for us to get a result.”

Slot said while at the time the loss stung, the result against Forest no longer feels like a shock.

“I expect the atmosphere (at the City Ground) to be fired up from the start so it makes it even more important to not let them get going anymore,” the Dutchman added.

“They are a team that hardly concede goals. They don’t take many risks in their build-up play so when they lose the ball they have many players behind the ball and they defend with 11 players.”

Having battled against relegation before finishing 17th last season, Forest are on a seven-match winning run across all competitions.

“They have a hard-working team without the ball and they can also hold the ball. (Forward) Chris Wood is a very good example of that,” Slot said.

“They have scored and been a threat by counter-attacks a lot, but they also have quality when they want to play with the ball. Nuno has done a great job at implementing a style of play that suits the players.”

Liverpool will be without Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez due to suspension, while defender Joe Gomez continues to remain out with an hamstring injury.

“He (Gomez) will definitely not be training with the team yet,” Slot added.

Slot wary of Accrington’s Champions League final’ at Anfield

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Accrington Stanley’s trip to Anfield in the FA Cup third round  today will be the League Two side’s “Champions League final”.

The clubs are 86 league positions apart in the 92-team pyramid with Slot’s men leading the Premier League, while Stanley sit just outside the relegation zone in the fourth tier.

“I think every team that plays against us it is a special occasion, but especially for a lower league team. They will be all up for it, they have looked forward to this game for many weeks,” said Slot at his pre-match press conference. “If you go to a Champions League final everyone is completely hyped up and ready and, tomorrow, for them that will feel like it is the Champions League final, so we have to be aware of that.” Despite that warning, the Dutchman is likely to take the opportunity to rotate his side during a hectic spell of fixtures in four competitions.

  • UCL: Slot shelves Salah’s contract deadlock ahead of Madrid test

UCL: Slot shelves Salah’s contract deadlock ahead of Madrid test

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said speculation over Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield is fuelling the Egyptian’s fine form ahead of a “special” week for the Reds.

Salah, who has scored 223 goals since joining Liverpool in 2017, is out of contract at the end of the season and expressed his disappointment at not yet receiving an offer of a new deal after netting twice in Sunday’s 3-2 win at Southampton.

The 32-year-old said he was “more out than in” as things stand despite scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists this season to spearhead a stunning start to Slot’s reign.

Liverpool are in first place in the Champions League ahead of the visit of holders Real Madrid today and sit eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

“I don’t think it distracts Mo at all. Maybe it brings even the best out of him, if you look at his performances until now,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“I talked to Mo about what I expect from him, like I do with all the other players, and he’s in a good place at the moment.

“The only thing I can say is if I look at my line-ups, Mo is more in than out.”

Salah is one of three Liverpool stars out of contract at the end of the season, alongside captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been linked with a move to Real.

“Honestly, for us as players, it’s nothing that we can really get involved in. All I can say is, you look at Mo today, you look at Mo yesterday, he’s the ultimate professional,” said Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

“It goes for all three of them. Mo, Virgil and Trent, who are all in similar positions. Every one of them is so focused on the next game and training and preparing properly. They’ve been leaders this year, that’s the way they’ve done it.”

A fifth victory in five matches would edge Liverpool closer to securing direct entry to the Champions League last 16 via a top-eight finish.

But they have to overturn a horrible recent record against the Spanish giants, who are unbeaten in the last eight meetings between the clubs, including two Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022.

Struggling Premier League champions Manchester City then visit Anfield on Sunday to give Liverpool the chance to land a telling blow in the title race.

“I think Real Madrid and Manchester City dominated Europe and the league for a few years now, combined with Liverpool, because Liverpool was always up there as well, competing with these two clubs,” added Slot.

“If you are Liverpool you always play big games, but these two are special because these three clubs have dominated the league in Europe for so many years recently. So that’s a special week to play.”

Madrid are more in need of the points after losing two of their opening four games.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men, though, often save their best for when they need it most on the European stage and Slot conceded the 15-time winners have a special aura in this competition.

“If it’s difficult for them, they can still win the game, which is probably one of the reasons, apart from them having so much quality, that they won this tournament a lot,” he said.

  • Slot not surprised by Liverpool’s flying start to season

Slot not surprised by Liverpool’s flying start to season

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is not surprised by his team’s fine start to the season, saying he was well aware of the strength of the side he was inheriting when he arrived at Anfield as Juergen Klopp’s successor.

Slot’s team, who have won 14 of 16 games across all competitions since he took charge, look to remain top of the Premier League table when they host Aston Villa today. Liverpool have a two-point lead over holders Manchester City.

They also top the Champions League table as the only team with four wins in four games.

“I don’t think surprise is the right word to use because I knew the quality of our team,” Slot told reporters. “But quality is one thing and consistency is another. I am not surprised because I saw the energy my players put in on a daily basis.

“Sometimes a bit of luck comes with that as well. Most of our results were deserved but some have been a close call,” he added. “(Also) when I started working with them I saw how much effort they put in to get these results.”

Slot does not expect forward Diogo Jota, who has not played since Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Oct. 20 due to injury, to return until after the international break, but would not divulge any details about his injury, saying: “There is privacy about this.
