  • Man attempts suicide in police cell

    A secondary school dropout, Owolabi Ogunwande, who allegedly attempted to hang himself at a toll gate and in a police cell in Lagos, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

    Ogunwande, 27, was arraigned on two-count charge of attempted suicide before Mr Aro Lambo.

    Prosecuting Inspector Cyriacus Osuji said Ogunwande committed the offence on June 28 at about 1:30 pm, at Toll Gate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, in Eti- Isa local government area.

    He also committed the same offence at about 11:30 am on Monday, in a cell at Maroko Police Station, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    On both occasions Ogunwande tried to hang himself on the neck with a rope, the court heard.

    According to Osuji, the offences contravened Section 235 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Ogunwande pleaded guilty to the charge. Magistrate Lambo adjourned till July 3, to hear the facts of the case and for sentencing.

    A police source told The Nation that Ogunwande, from Osun State, dropped out at Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 and worked as a wood loader for seven years before coming to Lagos on March 5, to seek greener pastures.

    He allegedly attempted suicide after finding it difficult to survive in Lagos, but he was rescued by a Man O’ war, official, identified only as Omotayo.

    The source quoted Ogunwande as saying: “When I couldn’t get a job in Lagos, I decided to go back home to Osun State, but I had no money on me, and there was also no food, for me to eat, so that was how I decided to take my life”.

    “I want to kill myself as there is nothing to show for being alive, life has no more meaning to me again.”

    Man in court for stabbing neighbour

    Olusegun Coker,36,-who allegedly assaulted his neigbour ,Moshood Ogun, by stabbing him with a broken bottle, was on Friday charged in a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Coker, who resides at Block 15, Rabiatu Thompson St., Surulere, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.‎

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 8 at Block 15, Rabiatu Thompson St., Surulere, Lagos.

    Osayande said the accused stabbed Ogun several times on both hands and caused him harm based on a misunderstanding they had.

    “It took some neighbours to stop him and the matter was reported to the police,’’ she said.

    She said the offences contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 stipulates a three-year jail for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    He said the surety should be a civil servant from grade level 12 and above who should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    Lambo adjourned the case until Oct. 17 for mention.

    Man in court over N1.6m visa fraud

    The police on Thursday arraigned a 29-year-old man, Emeka Abraham in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly collecting N1.622 million from two men on false pretext to procure visa for them.

    Abraham, whose address was not provided, was facing four-count charge bordering on obtaining money on
    false pretext and stealing.

    ‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that Abraham committed the offences between January and April 2017 at National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

    According to her, the defendant obtained N1.122 million from Ogbonna Ikechukwu on the pretext of procuring visa for football trial abroad.

    She said that the defendant also collected N500,000 from Patrick Chimaobi on the pretext of procuring a Dubai Visa for football trial abroad, a total of N1.622 million.

    ‎The offences contravened sections 287 and 314(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).‎

    However, the defendant pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.‎

    Lambo said the surety must be a property owner and should provide evidence of tax payments and address verified as he adjourned hearing in the case until Oct. 17.

    Man faces rape charge, gets N1m bail

    A 35-year-old man, Godwin Stanley, who unlawfully abducted a 15-year-old girl and raped her, was on Thursday granted bail by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, granted the accused bail of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

    Lambo said that one of the sureties must be a property owner within the jurisdiction of the court, while other surety should be a community leader or a cleric.‎

    The magistrate said that the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Mohammed, who lives in Ajia Street in Ijeshatedo area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape.‎

    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 22 in his apartment at about 8.30.a.m.

    ‎‎Osayande said that the accused unlawfully abducted the 15-year-old girl out of the custody and protection of her parents with intent to have sexual intercourse with her.‎

    She alleged that the accused, who reside in the same compound with parents of the girl, called the girl out pretending as if he wanted to send her on errand.

    “After he discovered that parents of the girl had gone to work, he pushed the girl into his room and raped her.

    “The girl narrated the story to her parents, when they returned from work,” Osayande alleged.

    ‎The offences contravened Sections 269 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The case was adjourned until Oct. 10 pending the outcome of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
